RESUMO

Myriad conditions may affect both the neurologic system and the thorax, while other diseases primarily affecting the thorax may manifest with neurologic abnormalities. Correlation of signs, symptoms, and imaging findings in the neurological system with those in the thorax can help diagnose certain conditions and/or guide further diagnostic work-up and treatment. We will review and illustrate the imaging appearance of several systemic/neurological diseases with thoracic manifestations as well as discuss conditions in the thorax that can lead to neurologic symptoms.

RESUMO

Brachioradial pruritus (BRP) is an enigmatic condition often encountered by dermatologists and passed off as a benign itch. It is an "idiopathic" pruritus, presenting as severe itching on the radial aspect of the elbow. The physical examination may be unremarkable except for mild pruritic lesions. Hence, the patient is treated with local applications of sunscreens, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-histamines and steroids, most of which prove to be ineffective. Dermatomal localization of localization of pruritis has suggested cervical myeloradiculopathy as a novel aetiology and this has been elucidated in recent studies. Here we report a young man, who presented with brachioradial pruritus and was diagnosed to have a C6-7 intramedullary cervical cord lesion.

RESUMO

Patients with primary brain tumors often experience seizures, which can be the presenting symptom or occur for the first time at any point along the illness trajectory. In addition to causing morbidity, seizures negatively affect independence and quality of life in other ways, for example, by leading to loss of driving privileges. Long-term therapy with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is the standard of care in brain tumor patients with seizures, but the role of prophylactic AEDs in seizure-naive patients remains controversial. In this article, experts in the field discuss the issues of AED efficacy and toxicity, and explain their differing recommendations for routine use of prophylactic AEDs.
