RESUMO

Test results of high-voltage one- and four-channel radio-frequency (RF) generators based on the coaxial gyromagnetic ferrite-filled nonlinear transmission lines (NLTL) with external magnetic bias and RF-modulation frequency of a high-voltage pulse envelope of ∼8 GHz are presented. Electrical strength of oil-isolated NLTLs was tested in a compact version of one-channel generator based on the RADAN driver at a repetition rate of 100 pps. In case of a stationary setup, 5-ns pulse with -500 kV amplitude was split into 4 channels with individual NLTLs. Gyromagnetic line output pulses had fast damped RF-modulation with a maximum modulation depth more than 50% and the peak amplitude of -200 kV. Independent control of a delay time in each channel was realized by the coaxial spiral lines with a central biased ferrite core. The coherent summation possibility of RF fields in the free space radiated by a 4-channel system of conical dielectric antennas was demonstrated.

For the first time, we demonstrate experimentally the possibility of Cherenkov superradiant generation with a phase imposed by an ultrashort seed microwave pulse. The phases of seed and initiated Ka-band microwave pulses were correlated with the accuracy of 0.5-0.7 rad for the power ratio down to -35 dB. Characteristics of such a process were determined in the frame of a basic theoretical model that describes both spontaneous and stimulated emission of an electron beam moving in corrugated waveguides. The obtained results open up opportunities of reaching extremely high radiation power density in phased arrays of short-pulse coherently operating microwave generators.

The synchronized operation of four gyromagnetic nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs) was tested with a pulse repetition frequency up to 1 kHz during 1 s bursts. High voltage pulses with a duration of ∼5 ns from the solid state driver S-500 were split into four 48 Ω channels reaching about -200 kV in each channel with ∼10% variation in the amplitude. The maximum peak voltage at the NLTL output was within 220-235 kV with the maximum modulation depth of decaying oscillations up to 90% at the center frequency near 2.1 GHz. The relative delay between channels reached the half-period of the center frequency of oscillations. The associated beam steering by four element array of conical helical antennas was demonstrated in a horizontal plane at 17°. The effective potential of radiation reached 360 kV at the radiation axis. The effect of ferrite temperature on the shock wave velocity in gyromagnetic NLTL is observed.

Test results of high-voltage subnanosecond pulse generator with a hybrid, two-stage energy compression scheme are presented. After the first compression section with a gas discharger, a ferrite-filled gyromagnetic nonlinear transmitting line is used. The offered technical solution makes it possible to increase the voltage pulse amplitude from -185 kV to -325 kV, with a 2-ns pulse rise time minimized down to ∼180 ps. For the small output voltage amplitude of -240 kV, the shortest pulse front of ∼85 ps was obtained. The generator with maximum amplitude was utilized to form an ultra-short flow of runaway electrons in air-filled discharge gap with particles' energy approaching to 700 keV.

We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the possibility of correlating the phase of a Cherenkov superradiance (SR) pulse to the sharp edge of a current pulse, when spontaneous emission of the electron bunch edge serves as the seed for SR processes. By division of the driving voltage pulse across several parallel channels equipped with independent cathodes we can synchronize several SR sources to arrange a two-dimensional array. In the experiments carried out, coherent summation of radiation from four independent 8-mm wavelength band SR generators with peak power 600 MW results in the interference maximum of the directional diagram with an intensity that is equivalent to radiation from a single source with a power of 10 GW.

This paper presents the results of testing a high voltage pulse generator based on parallel gyromagnetic nonlinear transmission lines filled with saturable ferrite. The generator is capable of producing almost identical stable rf-modulated nanosecond high voltage pulses in each of the two, or four, parallel output channels. The output voltage amplitude in each channel can reach -285 or -180 kV, respectively, with a rf modulation depth of up to 60%. Drive pulses were produced as the packets of duration 1-5 s at a pulse repetition frequency of 800 Hz using a driver equipped with all-solid-state switches. Splitting the driver pulse provided electric field strengths in the channels which were below the breakdown field strength of the transmission lines. As a result, the use of nonlinear transmission lines of reduced diameter made it possible to increase the center frequency of the excited rf oscillations to ∼2 GHz.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in Ukraine in 1986 led to widespread radioactive releases into the environment - primarily of radioiodines and cesium - heavily affecting the northern portions of the country, with settlement-averaged thyroid doses estimated to range from 10 mGy to more than 10 Gy. The increased risk of thyroid cancer among exposed children and adolescents is well established but the impact of radioactive contamination on the risk of other types of cancer is much less certain. To provide data on a public health issue of major importance, we have analyzed the incidence of non-thyroid cancers during the post-Chernobyl period in a well-defined cohort of 13,203 individuals who were <18 years of age at the time of the accident. The report is based on standardized incidence ratio (SIR) analysis of 43 non-thyroid cancers identified through linkage with the National Cancer Registry of Ukraine for the period 1998 through 2009. We compared the observed and expected number of cases in three cancer groupings: all solid cancers excluding thyroid, leukemia, and lymphoma. Our analyses found no evidence of a statistically significant elevation in cancer risks in this cohort exposed at radiosensitive ages, although the cancer trends, particularly for leukemia (SIR=1.92, 95% confidence interval: 0.69; 4.13), should continue to be monitored.

We describe the methods of registration and reconstruction of an envelope of explosive electron emission current from the edge of a cylindrical cathode, which provides a picosecond time reference of the emitted electron beam with a subnanosecond voltage front applied to the accelerating gap. Variation of the front steepness allows one to determine the beam onset time in the experiments, where a collector-type current probe can be used. The advanced method of dynamic time domain reflectometry provides exact data on electron beam current rise and track changes in the cathode emission from pulse to pulse with a precision of less than 10 ps.

The construction and characterization of a measuring module for high voltage time-domain reflectometry with picosecond resolution is presented. The device provides registration of low-distortion reflections from the load at conditions of irregular shape and pronounced instability of an incident probing pulse with amplitude of hundreds of kilovolts and a width/front up to ~2 ns. This is achieved with registration of differential reflecting signals by using two voltage probes, whose original signals are shifted in time and have a calibrated delay. Specially designed voltage dividers based on coaxial coupled lines with equalized dielectric constant of insulation meet the requirements of voltage probes identity. Reflectometry allows one to study dynamic changes of the loads for a specific time range of ~10(-10) s and faster. An example of reflectometry-based analysis for variations in breakdown development rate of atmospheric discharge gap supplied with the pulses of ~100-kV amplitude and a front slope of ~4 × 10(14) V/s is presented.

The generation of an avalanche of runaway electrons is demonstrated for the first time in a laboratory experiment. Two flows of runaway electrons are formed sequentially in an extended air discharge gap at the stage of delay of a pulsed breakdown. The first, picosecond, runaway electron flow is emitted in the cathode region where the field is enhanced. Being accelerated in the gap, this beam generates electrons due to impact ionization. These secondary electrons form a delayed avalanche of runaway electrons if the field is strong enough. The properties of the avalanche correspond to the existing notions about the runaway breakdown in air. The measured current of the avalanche exceeds up to an order the current of the initiating electron beam.

Relatively few data are available on the prevalence of hyperthyroidism (TSH concentrations of <0.3 mIU/liter, with normal or elevated concentrations of free T4) in individuals exposed to radioiodines at low levels. The accident at the Chornobyl (Chernobyl) nuclear plant in Ukraine on April 26, 1986 exposed large numbers of residents to radioactive fallout, principally to iodine-131 ((131)I) (mean and median doses  =  0.6 Gy and 0.2 Gy). We investigated the relationship between (131)I and prevalent hyperthyroidism among 11,853 individuals exposed as children or adolescents in Ukraine who underwent an in-depth, standardized thyroid gland screening examination 12-14 years later. Radioactivity measurements taken shortly after the accident were available for all subjects and were used to estimate individual thyroid doses. We identified 76 cases of hyperthyroidism (11 overt, 65 subclinical). Using logistic regression, we tested a variety of continuous risk models and conducted categorical analyses for all subjects combined and for females (53 cases, n  =  5,767) and males (23 cases, n  =  6,086) separately but found no convincing evidence of a dose-response relationship between (131)I and hyperthyroidism. There was some suggestion of elevated risk among females in an analysis based on a dichotomous dose model with a threshold of 0.5 Gy chosen empirically (OR  =  1.86, P  =  0.06), but the statistical significance level was reduced (P  =  0.13) in a formal analysis with an estimated threshold. In summary, after a thorough exploration of the data, we found no statistically significant dose-response relationship between individual (131)I thyroid doses and prevalent hyperthyroidism.

AIM: To describe the epidemiology and pathology of thyroid cancer in Ukraine, and to perform the molecular analysis of genetic alterations more frequently found to be associated to papillary carcinomas (PTC) in a selected group of PTC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relationship between the thyroid cancer incidence and gender, age, and place of residence of subjects aged 0-18 years at the time of the Chernobyl accident (5427 subjects of thyroid cancer, among which 3996 (73.6%) were children aged 0 to 14 years at the time of the accident, and 1431 (26.3%) were adolescents aged 15 to 18 years was studied. Pathologically analyzed thyroid carcinomas were obtained from 640 patients (20-40 years old at the time of surgery and born before the Chernobyl accident), and from 90 patients (11-22 years old at the time of surgery and born after the accident). All patients were operated during 2006-2008. RET/PTC rearrangements and BRAF(V600E) mutation were analyzed in 35 cases of PTC. RESULTS: A comparison between the thyroid cancer incidence rates in the 6 highest contaminated regions of Ukraine and in the other 21 regions shows the most significant difference between the rates for the last three years of follow-up, which confirms that a direct relationship is still present between the rise in thyroid cancer incidence and the post Chernobyl radiation exposure. Much lower incidence of thyroid cancer in subjects, who were born after the accident, additionally confirmed a direct relationship between the Chernobyl accident and thyroid cancer development at least in those who were aged up to 18 years at the time of the nuclear accident. Pathological results showed that with increasing latency the decrease has been noted in the percentage of PTC with solid structure, a decrease in invasive properties of tumors, as well as an increase in the percentage of PTC with papillary-follicular structure, encapsulated forms, and <> carcinomas measuring up to 1 cm. Molecular-biological studies of PTC revealed more common RET/PTC1 and RET/PTC3 rearrangements (34.3% of cases), than BRAFV600E mutation (24%cases). CONCLUSION: After 22 years from the Chernobyl nuclear accident the number and incidence of thyroid cancer cases in Ukraine was steadily increased in the cohort of those who were children and adolescents at the time of the accident. Most common thyroid tumors (PTC) were characterized by significant changes in histological structure with increasing latency. PTC with any RET/PTC rearrangements had more aggressive behavior than BRAF(V600E)-positive tumors or PTC without gene alterations.

BACKGROUND: Like stable iodine, radioiodines concentrate in the thyroid gland, increasing thyroid cancer risk in exposed children. Data on exposure to the embryonic/fetal thyroid are rare, raising questions about use of iodine 131 (I-131) in pregnant women. We present here estimated risks of thyroid disease from exposure in utero to I-131 fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear accident. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional thyroid screening study (palpation, ultrasound, thyroid hormones, and, if indicated, fine needle aspiration) from 2003 to 2006. Participants were 2582 mother-child pairs from Ukraine in which the mother had been pregnant at the time of the accident on April 26, 1986, or 2 months after the time during which I-131 fallout was still present (1494 from contaminated areas, 1088 in the comparison group). Individual cumulative in utero thyroid dose estimates were derived from estimated I-131 activity in the mother's thyroid (mean 72 mGy; range 0-3230 mGy). RESULTS: There were seven cases of thyroid carcinoma and one case of Hurthle cell neoplasm identified as a result of the screening. Whereas the estimated excess odds ratio per gray for thyroid carcinoma was elevated (excess odds ratio per gray 11.66), it was not statistically significant (P = 0.12). No radiation risks were identified for other thyroid diseases. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that in utero exposure to radioiodines may have increased the risk of thyroid carcinoma approximately 20 yr after the Chernobyl accident, supporting a conservative approach to medical uses of I-131 during pregnancy.

RESUMO

Theoretical investigation of a short electron beam (extended bunch) interaction with a backward wave propagating in a slow wave structure demonstrates the possibility of producing ultrashort superradiance pulses with a peak power which exceeds the power of the driving beam (conversion factor K>1). It is shown that a nonuniform slow wave structure with optimized profile is beneficial in order to increase the conversion factor. The results of theoretical analysis are confirmed by the experiments. At X band using the SINUS-150 accelerator (4 ns, 330 kV, 2.6 kA) 0.6-0.8 ns superradiance pulses with a peak power of 1.2 GW and a conversion factor of 1.5 were obtained. Similar experiments at Ka-band based on the RADAN-303 accelerator (1 ns, 290 kV, 2.5 kA) demonstrated production of the superradiance (SR) pulse with duration 200 ps and peak power about 1 GW (conversion factor of 1.4).

CONTEXT: Due to the Chornobyl accident, millions were exposed to radioactive isotopes of iodine and some received appreciable iodine 131 (131I) doses. A subsequent increase in thyroid cancer has been largely attributed to this exposure, but evidence concerning autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) remains inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to quantify risk of AIT after 131I exposure. DESIGN/SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Baseline data were collected from the first screening cycle (1998-2000) of a large cohort of radiation-exposed individuals (n = 12,240), residents of contaminated, iodine-deficient territories of Ukraine. Study individuals were under the age of 18 yr on April 26, 1986, and had thyroid radioactivity measurements made shortly after the accident. OUTCOMES: AIT was defined a priori based on various combinations of elevated antibodies to thyroid peroxidase (ATPO), TSH, and clinical findings; elevated ATPO were considered to be an indicator of thyroid autoimmunity. RESULTS: No significant association was found between 131I thyroid dose estimates and AIT, but prevalence of elevated ATPO demonstrated a modest, significant association with 131I that was well described by several concave models. This relationship was apparent in individuals with moderately elevated ATPO and euthyroid, thyroid disease-free individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Twelve to 14 yr after the Chornobyl accident, no radiation-related increase in prevalence of AIT was found in a large cohort study, the first in which 131I thyroid doses were estimated using individual radioactivity measurements. However, a dose-response relationship with ATPO prevalence raises the possibility that clinically important changes may occur over time. Thus, further follow-up and analysis of prospective data in this cohort are necessary.

Urinary iodine concentrations were measured in 11,926 subjects who are participants in the Ukrainian-American Cohort Study of Thyroid Cancer and Other Thyroid Diseases Following the Chornobyl Accident. Measurements were made in two time periods corresponding to the first and second thyroid screening cycles (1998-2000, 2001-2003). These time periods fall before and after initiation of a government program to increase iodine sufficiency. Median urinary iodine concentrations did increase in the later time period compared to the earlier [47.5 microg/L, 95% confidence interval (CI) 46.5-48.9 microg/L versus 41.7 microg/L, 95% CI 40.4-42.5 microg/L], but levels remained in the mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency range as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), indicating the need for further efforts at iodination. In both time periods, urinary iodine levels were found to vary by place of residence and were lower in rural compared to urban areas. Iodine status needs to be considered when evaluating risk of thyroid cancer and other thyroid diseases.
