Background: Lung segmentectomy has gained much more attention as an important surgical method for treating early-stage lung cancer. However, incomplete fissures increase the difficulty of lung segmentectomy. The aim of this study was to analyze the safety and efficacy of the fissure-first approach in precision resection of lung segments for patients with incomplete fissures. Methods: The clinical data of patients with incomplete fissures who underwent lung segmentectomy were retrospectively analyzed. Date was divided into fissure-first approach in lung segmentectomy group (group A) and fissure-last approach in lung segmentectomy group (group B). The general linear data, operation times, intraoperative adverse events, postoperative recovery dates and complications were compared. Results: A total of 122 patients with complete clinical data were included. Patients in group B had more COPD (p < 0.05), and the lesions in group A were more closely related to the hilum of the lung (p < 0.05). Compared to Group B, Group A achieved better surgical outcomes, such as operation time, postoperative hospital stays, intraoperative bleeding, number of intrapulmonary lymph nodes sampled, counts of resected subsegments (except the upper lobe of the right lung), and rate of conversion to thoracotomy (all p < 0.05). Conclusion: The fissure-first approach is a safe and effective surgical approach in lung segmentectomy for patients with incomplete fissures. This approach can reduce the counts of resected subsegments and improve techniques in lung segmentectomy for patients with lung incomplete fissures.

Levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an essential glycolipid on the surface of most gram-negative bacteria, are tightly controlled-making LPS synthesis a promising target for developing new antibiotics. Escherichia coli adaptor protein LapB (YciM) plays an important role in regulating LPS synthesis by promoting degradation of LpxC, a deacetylase that catalyzes the first committed step in LPS synthesis. Under conditions where LPS is abundant, LapB recruits LpxC to the AAA+ protease FtsH for degradation. LapB achieves this by simultaneously interacting with FtsH through its transmembrane helix and LpxC through its cytoplasmic domain. Here, we describe a cryo-EM structure of the complex formed between LpxC and the cytoplasmic domain of LapB (LapBcyto). The structure reveals how LapB exploits both its tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) motifs and rubredoxin domain to interact with LpxC. Through both in vitro and in vivo analysis, we show that mutations at the LapBcyto/LpxC interface prevent LpxC degradation. Unexpectedly, binding to LapBcyto also inhibits the enzymatic activity of LpxC through allosteric effects reminiscent of LpxC activation by MurA in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Our findings argue that LapB regulates LPS synthesis in two steps: In the first step, LapB inhibits the activity of LpxC, and in the second step, it commits LpxC to degradation by FtsH.

RESUMO

Two templated borates, [Co(1-EI)2]·[B5O7(OH)3] (1) and [Ga(1-MI)2·B6O9(OH)4]·[H3BO3]·H[1-MI] (2), have been synthesized using a mild method. Notably, they exhibit an excellent ORR performance with an E1/2 value of 0.84 V and are the first to be used as the positive electrode catalyst for a zinc-air battery, which opens a pathway for the application of borate-based oxide catalysts.

Identifying cryptic species poses a substantial challenge to both biologists and naturalists due to morphological similarities. Bemisia tabaci is a cryptic species complex containing more than 44 putative species; several of which are currently among the world's most destructive crop pests. Interpreting and delimiting the evolution of this species complex has proved problematic. To develop a comprehensive framework for species delimitation and identification, we evaluated the performance of distinct data sources both individually and in combination among numerous samples of the B. tabaci species complex acquired worldwide. Distinct datasets include full mitogenomes, single-copy nuclear genes, restriction site-associated DNA sequencing, geographic range, host speciation, and reproductive compatibility datasets. Phylogenetically, our well-supported topologies generated from three dense molecular markers highlighted the evolutionary divergence of species of the B. tabaci complex and suggested that the nuclear markers serve as a more accurate representation of B. tabaci species diversity. Reproductive compatibility datasets facilitated the identification of at least 17 different cryptic species within our samples. Native geographic range information provides a complementary assessment of species recognition, while the host range datasets provide low rate of delimiting resolution. We further summarized different data performances in species classification when compared with reproductive compatibility, indicating that combination of mtCOI divergence, nuclear markers, geographic range provide a complementary assessment of species recognition. Finally, we represent a model for understanding and untangling the cryptic species complexes based on the evidence from this study and previously published articles.

Purpose: To identify the key mental health and improvement factors in hospital administrators working from home during COVID-19 normalization prevention and control. Methods: The survey was conducted from May to June 2023, and the practical experiences of 33 hospital administrators were collected using purposive sampling. The study examined a set of mental health factor systems. The relationship structure between the factors was constructed using the Decision-making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method. Finally, the structure was transformed using the influence weight of each factor via the DEMATEL-based Analytic Network Process. Results: Regarding influence weight, the key mental health factors of hospital administrators are mainly "lack of coordination," "time management issues," and "work-life imbalances." The influential network relation map shows that improvements can be made by addressing "improper guidelines," "laziness due to being at home," and "job insecurity" because they are the main sources of influence. The reliability level of the results for the network structure and weight was 98.79% (i.e., the gap was 1.12% < 5%). Conclusion: The network analysis model based on DEMATEL proposed in this study can evaluate the mental health factors of hospital administrators during the pandemic period from a multidimensional and multidirectional perspective and may help improve mental health problems and provide suggestions for hospital administrators.

The cardiovascular (CV) safety of febuxostat compared to allopurinol for the treatment of hyperuricemia among Asian patients is uncertain. In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the CV safety profiles of febuxostat with allopurinol in Asian patients with hyperuricemia. A total of 13 studies were included. On the basis of the pooled results of cohort studies, febuxostat users were at a significantly higher risk for acute coronary syndrome (ACS; hazard ratio [HR]: 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03-1.09, p < 0.01), atrial fibrillation (HR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.05-1.35, p < 0.01) than allopurinol users, whereas no significant difference between febuxostat and allopurinol existed for urgent coronary revascularization (HR: 1.07, 95% CI: 0.98-1.16, p = 0.13), and stroke (HR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.91-1.01, p = 0.13). Nevertheless, that difference in results of acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF; HR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.35-1.53, p = 0.40) and all-cause death (HR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.49-1.51, p = 0.60) was not significant based on randomized controlled trials. In the Chinese subgroup, febuxostat could increase the risk of ADHF (HR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.01-1.48, p < 0.05), CV death (HR: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.03-1.50, p < 0.05), and all-cause mortality (HR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01-1.14, p < 0.05) compared to allopurinol. In conclusion, the use of febuxostat, compared with allopurinol among Asian patients, was associated with a significantly increased risk of adverse CV events.

RESUMO

Sustainable agriculture relies on implementing effective, eco-friendly crop protection strategies. However, the adoption of these green tactics by growers is limited by their high costs resulting from the insufficient integration of various components of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). In response, we propose a framework within IPM termed Multi-Dimensional Management of Multiple Pests (3MP). Within this framework, a spatial dimension considers the interactive effects of soil-crop-pest-natural enemy networks on pest prevalence, while a time dimension addresses pest interactions over the crop season. The 3MP framework aims to bolster the adoption of green IPM tactics, thereby extending environmental benefits beyond crop protection.

Polarization-sensitive photodetectors have attracted considerable attention owing to their potential application prospects in navigation, optical switching, and communication. However, it remains challenging to develop a facile and effective strategy to simultaneously meet the demands of low power consumption, high performance, and excellent polarization sensitivity. Herein, a series of low-symmetry two-dimensional (2D) ReSe2 Schottky photodetectors with geometry-asymmetric contacts are constructed. These devices exhibit excellent photoelectrical performance and impressive polarization sensitivity in the self-powered mode owing to the difference in the Schottky barrier height induced by the asymmetric contact areas, interfacial states, and thickness difference. Particularly, an outstanding responsivity of 379 mA/W, a decent specific detectivity of 6.8 × 1011 Jones, and a high light on/off ratio (Ilight/Idark) of over 105 under 635 nm light illumination are achieved. Scanning photocurrent mapping (SPCM) measurements further confirm that the ReSe2/drain overlapped region (corresponding to the smaller contact area side) with a higher Schottky barrier height plays a dominant role in the generation of photocurrent. Furthermore, the proposed device displays impressive polarization ratios (PRs) of 3.1 and 3.6 at zero bias under 635 and 808 nm irradiation, respectively. The high-resolution single-pixel imaging capability is also demonstrated. This work reveals the great potential of the ReSe2 Schottky photodetector with geometry-asymmetric contacts for high-performance, self-powered, and polarization-sensitive photodetection.

Sepsis is characterized by organ dysfunction resulting from a dysregulated inflammatory response triggered by infection, involving multifactorial and intricate molecular mechanisms. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), a notable transcription factor, assumes a pivotal role in the onset and progression of sepsis. This review aims to furnish a comprehensive overview of HIF-1α's mechanism of action in sepsis, scrutinizing its involvement in inflammatory regulation, hypoxia adaptation, immune response, and organ dysfunction. The review encompasses an analysis of the structural features, regulatory activation, and downstream signaling pathways of HIF-1α, alongside its mechanism of action in the pathophysiological processes of sepsis. Furthermore, it will delve into the roles of HIF-1α in modulating the inflammatory response, including its association with inflammatory mediators, immune cell activation, and vasodilation. Additionally, attention will be directed toward the regulatory function of HIF-1α in hypoxic environments and its linkage with intracellular signaling, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial damage. Finally, the potential therapeutic value of HIF-1α as a targeted therapy and its significance in the clinical management of sepsis will be discussed, aiming to serve as a significant reference for an in-depth understanding of sepsis pathogenesis and potential therapeutic targets, as well as to establish a theoretical foundation for clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: This multicenter observational study aimed to determine whether dyslipidemia or obesity contributes more significantly to unfavorable clinical outcomes in patients experiencing a first-ever ischemic stroke (IS). METHODS: The study employed a machine learning predictive model to investigate associations among body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides (TG), and total cholesterol (TC) with adverse outcomes in IS patients. Extensive real-world clinical data was utilized, and risk factors significantly linked to adverse outcomes were identified through multivariate analysis, propensity score matching (PSM), and regression discontinuity design (RDD) techniques. Furthermore, these findings were validated via a nationwide multicenter prospective cohort study. RESULTS: In the derived cohort, a total of 45,162 patients diagnosed with IS were assessed, with 522 experiencing adverse outcomes. A multifactorial analysis incorporating PSM and RDD methods identified TG (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.110; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.041-1.183; P <  0.01) and TC (adjusted OR = 1.139; 95%CI: 1.039-1.248; P <  0.01) as risk factors. However, BMI, BFP, and HDL showed no significant effect. In the validation cohort, 1410 controls and 941 patients were enrolled, confirming that lipid levels are more strongly correlated with the prognosis of IS patients compared to obesity (TC, OR = 1.369; 95%CI: 1.069-1.754; P <  0.05; TG, OR = 1.332; 95%CI: 1.097-1.618; P <  0.01). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that dyslipidemia has a more substantial impact on the prognosis of IS patients compared to obesity. This highlights the importance of prioritizing dyslipidemia management in the treatment and prevention of adverse outcomes in IS patients.

Background: Studies of chylothorax after congenital heart disease in infants are rare. Chylothorax has a higher incidence in infancy, but its risk factors are not well understood. Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the risk factors of chylothorax after congenital heart surgery in infants. Methods: This retrospective study included 176 infants who underwent congenital heart disease surgery at the Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute, China, between 2016 and 2020. According to the occurrence of chylothorax, the patients were divided into a control group (n = 88) and a case group (n = 88). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed to analyse the incidence and influencing factors of chylothorax after congenital heart surgery in infants. Results: Between 2016 and 2020, the annual incidence rate fluctuated between 1.55% and 3.17%, and the total incidence of chylothorax was 2.02%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that postoperative albumin (p = 0.041; odds ratio [OR] = 0.095), preoperative mechanical ventilation (p = 0.001; OR = 1.053) and preterm birth (p = 0.002; OR = 5.783) were risk factors for postoperative chylothorax in infants with congenital heart disease. Conclusion: The total incidence of chylothorax was 2.02% and the annual incidence rate fluctuated between 1.55% and 3.17% between 2016 and 2020. Premature infants, longer preoperative mechanical ventilation and lower albumin after congenital heart surgery may be risk factors for chylothorax. In addition, infants with chylothorax are inclined to be infected, need more respiratory support, use a chest drainage tube for longer and remain longer in hospital.

Innovative functional electrical stimulation has demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing daily walking and rehabilitating stroke patients with foot drop. However, its lack of precision in stimulating timing, individual adaptivity, and bilateral symmetry, resulted in diminished clinical efficacy. Therefore, a closed-loop wearable device network of intrinsically controlled functional electrical stimulation (CI-FES) system is proposed, which utilizes the personal surface myoelectricity, derived from the intrinsic neuro signal, as the switch to activate/deactivate the stimulation on the affected side. Simultaneously, it decodes the myoelectricity signal of the patient's healthy side to adjust the stimulation intensity, forming an intrinsically controlled loop with the inertial measurement units. With CI-FES assistance, patients' walking ability significantly improved, evidenced by the shift in ankle joint angle mean and variance from 105.53° and 28.84 to 102.81° and 17.71, and the oxyhemoglobin concentration tested by the functional near-infrared spectroscopy. In long-term CI-FES-assisted clinical testing, the discriminability in machine learning classification between patients and healthy individuals gradually decreased from 100% to 92.5%, suggesting a remarkable recovery tendency, further substantiated by performance on the functional movement scales. The developed CI-FES system is crucial for contralateral-hemiplegic stroke recovery, paving the way for future closed-loop stimulation systems in stroke rehabilitation is anticipated.

Evidence suggests that damage to the ribbon synapses (RS) may be the main cause of auditory dysfunction in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathophysiology of synaptic damage. However, the relationship between oxidative stress and RS damage in NIHL remains unclear. To investigate the hypothesis that noise-induced oxidative stress is a key factor in synaptic damage within the inner ear, we conducted a study using mice subjected to single or repeated noise exposure (NE). We assessed auditory function using auditory brainstem response (ABR) test and examined cochlear morphology by immunofluorescence staining. The results showed that mice that experienced a single NE exhibited a threshold shift and recovered within two weeks. The ABR wave I latencies were prolonged, and the amplitudes decreased, suggesting RS dysfunction. These changes were also demonstrated by the loss of RS as evidenced by immunofluorescence staining. However, we observed threshold shifts that did not return to baseline levels following secondary NE. Additionally, ABR wave I latencies and amplitudes exhibited notable changes. Immunofluorescence staining indicated not only severe damage to RS but also loss of outer hair cells. We also noted decreased T-AOC, ATP, and mitochondrial membrane potential levels, alongside increased hydrogen peroxide concentrations post-NE. Furthermore, the expression levels of 4-HNE and 8-OHdG in the cochlea were notably elevated. Collectively, our findings suggest that the production of reactive oxygen species leads to oxidative damage in the cochlea. This mitochondrial dysfunction consequently contributes to the loss of RS, precipitating an early onset of NIHL.

The rapid assembly of valuable cyclic amine architectures in a single step from simple precursors has been recognized as an ideal platform in term of efficiency and sustainability. Although a vast number of studies regarding cyclic amine synthesis has been reported, new synthetic disconnection approaches are still high in demand. Herein, we report a catalytic radical-polar crossover cycloaddition to cyclic amine synthesis triggered from primary sulfonamide under photoredox condition. This newly developed disconnection, comparable to established synthetic approaches, will allow to construct ß, ß-disubstituted cyclic amine and ß-monosubstituted cyclic amine derivatives efficiently. This study highlights the unique utility of primary sulfonamide as a bifunctional reagent, which acts as a radical precursor and a nucleophile. The open-shell methodology demonstrates broad tolerance to various functional groups, drug derivatives and natural products in an economically and sustainable fashion.

Bletilla striata is a valuable medicine in China, belonging to the Orchidaceae family, and is used for treating various ailments such as hemoptysis, pyocutaneous disease, and anal fissure by preventing blood flow, reducing swelling, and promoting granulation. In June 2022, a disease with symptoms similar to root rot was observed on B. striata in the pineland (the area was 0.4 hectare) of Lancang County (22°48'17" N, 99°46'58"22 E), Yunnan Province, China. The root rot incidence rate reached 16% (Table S1). The root rot incidence was calculated as follows: root rot incidence (%) = (number of root rot seedlings/total number of seedlings investigated) × 100. In May 2023, the similar symptoms were observed in the field, and the disease incidence was 17% (Table S1). Initially, there were no obvious symptoms on the leaves. Subsequently, the leaves wilted and brown spots appeared. Later, the entire leaf browned, withered and eventually died (Fig. S1A, B). The roots were brown and the browning spread from the root edge to the center, causing vascular bundle browning and dead lignified fibers in the cortex (Fig. S1C, D). To isolate the causal pathogen, 20 symptomatic root tissues were collected from 20 plants. Cutting the diseased tissues into small pieces (0.5 × 0.5 cm). After surface sterilization (30s with 75% ethanol and 3 min with 2% sodium hypochlorite, rinsed three times with sterile water), the disinfected root tissues were plated onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 25℃ for 4 to 6 days with 12 h light/dark photoperiod. A total of 10 single-spore isolates with similar morphology and conidial characteristics were obtained. one representative isolate BJG6 was selected for identification and further study. The fungal colony was reddish-brown or orange-white on PDA after 8 days of incubation at 25℃. The mycelium was like carpet or cotton, and the edge of colony was uniform (Fig. S1E). Large conidia were formed on simple conidial peduncles (Fig. S1F, G). The conidia with 1~3 septates and 1 mostly, with cylindrical shapes and narrow tops but sharp bases (Fig. S1H-J). Conidia with 1 septate measured as 5.5 (4.3-6.7) × 20.7 (16.0-25.4) µm (n=30), while those with 2 septates measured as 6.6 (5.8-7.4) × 26.5 (21.7-31.3) µm (n=30), and those with 3 septates was 6.9 (6.2-7.8) × 31.8 (29.3-34.3) µm (n=30). Ellipsoidal microconidia could be formed on conidiophore and measured as 2.4 (1.9-2.9) × 4.9 (5.9-3.9) µm to 2.7 (2.2-3.2) × 5.4 (4.3-6.5) µm (n=30). Spherical or subspherical chlamydospores were produced on low-nutrient agar, with an average size of 5.8(5.0-6.6) µm×5.3 (4.4-6.2) µm (n=30) (Fig. S1K, L). According to the morphology and conidial features, the pathogen was consistent with the description of Ilyonectria coprosmae (Cabral et al. 2012). The total genomic DNA was extracted, and primer pairs ITS4/ITS5 were used to amplify and sequence the rDNA-ITS region (ITS1-5.8 S rRNA-ITS2 gene regions) (White et al. 1990). The sequences were deposited in GenBank (SUB13905750 for ITS). BLAST searches revealed BJG6 showed 98% homology with corresponding sequences of Ilyonectria coprosmae in GenBank (JF735260). A phylogenetic tree (MEGA 7.0) was constructed using maximum-likelihood methods (Fig. S2). To identify pathogenicity, a cultured medium in a size of 6mm containing isolate BJG6 was inoculated onto ten healthy roots of B. striata, PDA plugs alone were used as the uninoculated controls. All samples were placed in a dark inoculation chamber at 25℃. The pathogenicity test was replicated three times. After two weeks, all inoculated roots appeared similar symptoms identical to those observed on field plants (Fig. S1M, N-P), while control plants remained healthy (Fig. S1Q, R). The same pathogenic fungus was reisolated from the symptomatic root rot, and the characteristics of colony and conidia were the same as the original isolates (Fig. S1S, T). These results confirmed I. coprosmae as the causal pathogen of root rot disease on B. striata in China by Koch's postulates tests for the first time. Further exploration should be conducted to understand the occurrence and migration of this disease, so as to develop specific and efficient disease management strategies in the future.

The color of purple carrot taproots mainly depends on the anthocyanins sequestered in the vacuoles. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are key enzymes involved in anthocyanin transport. However, the precise mechanism of anthocyanin transport from the cytosolic surface of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the vacuoles in carrots remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the carrot genome, leading to the identification of a total of 41 DcGST genes. Among these, DcGST1 emerged as a prominent candidate, displaying a strong positive correlation with anthocyanin pigmentation in carrot taproots. It was highly expressed in the purple taproot tissues of purple carrot cultivars, while it was virtually inactive in the non-purple taproot tissues of purple and non-purple carrot cultivars. DcGST1, a homolog of Arabidopsis thaliana TRANSPARENT TESTA 19 (TT19), belongs to the GSTF clade and plays a crucial role in anthocyanin transport. Using the CRISPR/Cas9 system, we successfully knocked out DcGST1 in the solid purple carrot cultivar 'Deep Purple' ('DPP'), resulting in carrots with orange taproots. Additionally, DcMYB7, an anthocyanin activator, binds to the DcGST1 promoter, activating its expression. Compared with the expression DcMYB7 alone, co-expression of DcGST1 and DcMYB7 significantly increased anthocyanin accumulation in carrot calli. However, overexpression of DcGST1 in the two purple carrot cultivars did not change the anthocyanin accumulation pattern or significantly increase the anthocyanin content. These findings improve our understanding of anthocyanin transport mechanisms in plants, providing a molecular foundation for improving and enhancing carrot germplasm.

Schwannomas are benign slow-growing tumors arising from the embryonic neural crest cells of the nerve sheaths of peripheral and cranial nerves, and they are a rare type of soft tissue mass that is usually always solitary. Generally, it grows in the head, neck, and flexor portions of the limbs, where many nerves are located. Schwannomas of the lung are extremely rare. Fewer than ten cases of schwannomas in this organ region have been reported in the existing literature. In this case report, a 40-year-old male non-smoker was hospitalized with occasional chest pain. His chest computed tomographic scan revealed a 3.8 cm space occupying lesion in the upper lobe of the right lung. This lesion has clear boundaries and uneven internal density. And it was concluded as a benign lesion possibility, it is preferred to be considered as a haematoma. This space occupying lesion was eventually confirmed as a schwannoma by needle biopsy tissues. Due to the presence in rare locations, such as the lung, the clinical presentation of this space occupying lesion is non-specific, making diagnosis difficult. The data presented in this case report can help clinicians to obtain information on the identification of this disease, which highlighted lung schwannoma as a differential diagnosis for patients with intermittent pain. It can also alert clinicians and radiologists to observe every detail of the radiology imaging findings.

IMPORTANCE: Many plant viruses are transmitted by insect vectors in a circulative manner. For efficient transmission, the entry of the virus from vector hemolymph into the primary salivary gland (PSG) is a step of paramount importance. Yet, vector components mediating virus entry into PSG remain barely characterized. Here, we demonstrate the role of clathrin-mediated endocytosis and early endosomes in begomovirus entry into whitefly PSG. Our findings unravel the key components involved in begomovirus transport within the whitefly body and transmission by their whitefly vectors and provide novel clues for blocking begomovirus transmission.

Unusual climates can lead to extreme temperatures. Fejervarya kawamurai, one of the most prevalent anurans in the paddy fields of tropical and subtropical regions in Asia, is sensitive to climate change. The present study focuses primarily on a single question: how do the 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes (PCGs) respond to extreme temperature change compared with 25 °C controls? Thirty-eight genes including an extra tRNA-Met gene were identified and sequenced from the mitochondrial genome of F. kawamurai. Evolutionary relationships were assessed within the Dicroglossidae and showed that Dicroglossinae is monophyletic and F. kawamurai is a sister group to the clade of (F. multistriata + F. limnocharis). Transcript levels of mitochondrial genes in liver were also evaluated to assess responses to 24 h exposure to low (2 °C and 4 °C) or high (40 °C) temperatures. Under 2 °C, seven genes showed significant changes in liver transcript levels, among which transcript levels of ATP8, ND1, ND2, ND3, ND4, and Cytb increased, respectively, and ND5 decreased. However, exposure to 4 °C for 24 h was very different in that the expressions of ten mitochondrial protein-coding genes, except ND1, ND3, and Cytb, were significantly downregulated. Among them, the transcript level of ND5 was most significantly downregulated, decreasing by 0.28-fold. Exposure to a hot environment at 40 °C for 24 h resulted in a marked difference in transcript responses with strong upregulation of eight genes, ranging from a 1.52-fold increase in ND4L to a 2.18-fold rise in Cytb transcript levels, although COI and ND5 were reduced to 0.56 and 0.67, respectively, compared with the controls. Overall, these results suggest that at 4 °C, F. kawamurai appears to have entered a hypometabolic state of hibernation, whereas its mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation was affected at both 2 °C and 40 °C. The majority of mitochondrial PCGs exhibited substantial changes at all three temperatures, indicating that frogs such as F. kawamurai that inhabit tropical or subtropical regions are susceptible to ambient temperature changes and can quickly employ compensating adjustments to proteins involved in the mitochondrial electron transport chain.
