Short-term resistance training improves cardiac autonomic modulation and blood pressure in hypertensive older women: a randomized controlled trial. J Strength Cond Res 34(1): 37-45, 2020-This randomized controlled trial investigated the efficacy of short-term resistance training (RT) on cardiac autonomic modulation and peripheral hemodynamic parameters in hypertensive older women. Twenty-five hypertensive older women who were insufficiently active (64.7 ± 4.7 years) participated in this study. Subjects were randomly allocated to a 10-week RT program (2 d·wk in the first 5 weeks; 3 d·wk in the last 5 weeks) or a nonexercise control group. Linear reverse periodization was used for the RT program. Cardiac autonomic modulation, mean blood pressure (MBP), peripheral vascular resistance (PVR), and resting heart rate (RHR) were measured before and after 10 weeks. The RT group reduced cardiac sympathetic modulation (0V%; B = -6.6; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -12.9 to -0.2; p = 0.045; Cohen's d = 0.88) and showed a trend for increased parasympathetic modulation (2V%; B = 12.5; 95% CI: 0-25; p = 0.050; Cohen's d = 0.87) compared with the control group. The RT group reduced MBP (B = -8.5 mm Hg; 95% CI: -13.6 to -3.4; p = 0.001; Cohen's d = 1.27), PVR (B = -14.1 units; 95% CI: -19.9 to -8.4; p < 0.001; Cohen's d = 1.86), and RHR (B = -8.8 b·min; 95% CI: -14.3 to -3.3; p = 0.002; Cohen's d = 1.20) compared with the control group. In the RT group, the changes in 2V% patterns and low-frequency components showed a correlation with changes in MBP (r = -0.60; p = 0.032) and RHR (r = 0.75; p = 0.0003). In conclusion, 10 weeks of RT improved cardiac autonomic modulation and reduced MBP and PVR in hypertensive older women. These results reinforce the importance of RT for this population.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the anthropometric, physiological and nutritional profiles of elite beach handball athletes. Additionally, the cardiometabolic demands of matches were characterized. METHODS: Six players (24.7±2 years old, 168±0.08 cm, 63.8±7.1 kg) from Brazilian selection, which ranks first in the world, were characterized in terms of aerobic capacities, speeds, anaerobic capacities, muscle power and dietetic profiles. In an official match, heart rate and lactate production were measured. RESULTS: The athletes exhibited a VO2 max of 44.5±4.7 mL/kg/min, a 20-m speed of 3.214±0.43 seconds, a maximal anaerobic power of 337.3±126.3 watts and a long jump muscle power of 210.1±16.6 cm). The athletes had a mean body fat percentage of 24.9±3.0% and balanced macronutrient intakes. During the match, the lactate concentrations were 13.8 mM and 14.1 mM in the middle and at the end of the first set, respectively, and 11.7 mM and 12.0 mM in the middle and end of the second set, respectively. All players, with the exception of the goalkeeper, maintained a median heart rate of at least 123 bpm and no more than 196 bpm. CONCLUSIONS: The athletes exhibited only moderate aerobic capacities and better anaerobic and force capacities and high lactate production during the match.

A 3739 nucleotide fragment of Infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) from Brazil was amplified and sequenced. This fragment contains the entire coding sequences of viral proteins, the full 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) and a partial sequence of 5' untranslated region (5'UTR). The genome organization of IHHNV revealed the three typical major coding domains: a left ORF1 of 2001 bp that codes NS1, a left ORF2 (NS2) of 1091 bp that codes NS2 and a right ORF3 of 990 bp that codes VP. Nucleotide and amino acid sequences of the three viral proteins were compared with putative amino acid sequences of viruses reported from different regions. Comparisons among genomes from different geographic locations reveal 31 nucleotide regions that are 100% similar, distributed throughout the genome. An analysis of secondary structure of UTR regions, revealed regions with high probability to form hairpins, that may be involved in mechanisms of viral replication. Additionally, a maximum likelihood analysis indicates that Brazilian IHHNV belongs to lineage III, in the infectious IHHNV group, and is clustered with IHHNV isolates from Hawaii, China, Taiwan, Vietnam and South Korea. A new nested PCR targeting conserved nucleotide regions is proposed to detect IHHNV.
