RESUMO

The slow reaction rates to chemical and photochemical degradation are well-known properties of plastics. However, large plastic surfaces exposed to environmental conditions release particles and compounds that affect ecosystems and human health. The aim of this work was to identify compounds associated with the degradation of polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics (markers) on silica and sand and evaluate their use to screen microplastics on natural sand. Products were identified by using targeted and untargeted LC-HRMS analysis. All polymers underwent chemical oxidation on silica. PE released dicarboxylic acids (HO2C-(CH2)n-CO2H (n = 4-30), while PS released cis/trans-chalcone, trans-dypnone, 3-phenylpropiophenone, and dibenzoylmethane. PVC released dicarboxylic acids and aromatic compounds. Upon irradiation, PE was stable while PS released the same compounds as under chemical oxidation but at lower yields. Under the above condition, PVC generated HO2C-[CH2-CHCl]n-CH2-CO2H and HO2C-[CH2-CHCl]n-CO2H (n = 2-19) dicarboxylic acids. The same products were detected on sand but at a lower concentration than on silica due to better retention within the pores. Detection of markers of PE and PS on natural sand allowed us to screen microplastics by following a targeted analysis. Markers of PVC were not detected before or after thermal/photo-oxidation due to the low release of compounds and limitations associated with surface exposure/penetration of radiation.

RESUMO

Magnetoelectric multiferroics, either single-phase or composites comprising ferroelectric/ferromagnetic coupled films, are promising candidates for energy efficient memory computing. However, most of the multiferroic magnetoelectric systems studied so far are based on materials that are not compatible with industrial processes. Doped hafnia is emerging as one of the few CMOS-compatible ferroelectric materials. Thus, it is highly relevant to study the integration of ferroelectric hafnia into multiferroic systems. In particular, ferroelectricity in hafnia, and the eventual magnetoelectric coupling when ferromagnetic layers are grown atop of it, are very much dependent on quality of interfaces. Since magnetic metals frequently exhibit noticeable reactivity when grown onto oxides, it is expected that ferroelectricity and magnetoelectricity might be reduced in multiferroic hafnia-based structures. In this article, we present excellent ferroelectric endurance and retention in epitaxial Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films grown on buffered silicon using Co as the top electrode. The crucial influence of a thin Pt capping layer grown on top of Co on the ferroelectric functional characteristics is revealed by contrasting the utilization of Pt-capped Co, non-capped Co and Pt. Magnetic control of the imprint electric field (up to 40% modulation) is achieved in Pt-capped Co/Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 structures, although this does not lead to appreciable tuning of the ferroelectric polarization, as a result of its high stability. Computation of piezoelectric and flexoelectric strain-mediated mechanisms of the observed magnetoelectric coupling reveal that flexoelectric contributions are likely to be at the origin of the large imprint electric field variation.

RESUMO

Ferroelectric memory devices such as ferroelectric memristors, ferroelectric tunnel junctions, and field-effect transistors are considered among the most promising candidates for neuromorphic computing devices. The promise arises from their defect-independent switching mechanism, low energy consumption and high power efficiency, and important properties being aimed for are reliable switching at high speed, excellent endurance, retention, and compatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Binary or doped binary materials have emerged over conventional complex-composition ferroelectrics as an optimum solution, particularly in terms of CMOS compatibility. The current state-of-the-art route to achieving superlative ferroelectric performance of binary oxides is to induce ferroelectricity at the nanoscale, e.g., in ultra-thin films of doped HfO2, ZrO2, Zn1-xMgxO, Al-xScxN, and Bi1-xSmxO3. This short review article focuses on the materials science of emerging new ferroelectric materials, including their different properties such as remanent polarization, coercive field, endurance, etc. The potential of these materials is discussed for neuromorphic applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies that have assessed the Rastelli and Nikaidoh operations for transposition of the great arteries (TGA) with obstructed left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) have not fully evaluated the anatomic drivers that may contribute to surgical selection. We present our procedural selection process for optimizing outcomes of complex TGA in the modern era. METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective study that included pediatric patients who underwent either a Nikaidoh or Rastelli operation for the treatment of TGA-LVOTO, congenitally corrected TGA-LVOTO, or double-outlet right ventricle TGA type-LVOTO from June 2004 to June 2021. RESULTS: There were 34 patients stratified by Nikaidoh (n = 16) or Rastelli (n = 18) operation. The incidence of all postoperative complications and mortality was low, and the incidence of complications between the groups was similar. Patients were more likely to have undergone a Nikaidoh than a Rastelli if they had a pulmonary annulus >5 mm (87.5% vs 11.1%), anteriorly/posteriorly oriented great vessels (88% vs 8%), remote (80% vs 11%) or restrictive (75% vs 6%) ventricular septal defect, and right ventricular hypoplasia (50% vs 0%; all, P < .05). The resulting rates of reoperation were similar between the groups (44.0% vs 37.5%; P = .24) and largely composed of conduit replacements in the Rastelli patients and valvular repairs or replacements in the Nikaidoh group. Rates of catheter-based interventions were also similar. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that for the optimal treatment of conotruncal anomalies with discordant ventriculoarterial connections, procedural selection should be based on pathoanatomic criteria that can ensure patients undergo the operation most suited to their anatomy.

RESUMO

In this work, we demonstrate, for the first time, that coupling together the pyroelectric effect, the photovoltaic effect and the plasmonic effect is a novel method to significantly enhance the performance of self-powered photodetectors in the visible region. Photodetectors based on tri-layered heterojunction of n-Si/p-SnO/n-ZnO through the inclusion of silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) at the SnO/ZnO interface were fabricated. The photo-response of the device, with excitation from a chopped 650 nm wavelength laser, was carefully investigated, and it was shown that the photodetector performance is enhanced the most with the inclusion of spheroidal Ag NPs with ∼70 nm diameter. The Al/Si/SnO/Ag NPs/ZnO/ITO device exhibited an optimum responsivity, detectivity and sensitivity of 210.2 mA W-1, 5.47 × 109 Jones and 15.0 × 104, respectively, together with a rise and fall time of 2.3 and 51.3 µs, respectively, at a laser power density of 317 mW cm-2 and at a chopper frequency of 10 Hz. The present photodetectors are more than twice as responsive as the current best-performing ZnO-based pyro-phototronic photodetectors and they also exhibit other competitive features, such as detectivity, and fall and rise times. Therefore, by exploiting the plasmonic effect of the Ag NPs together with the pyroelectric effect in a ZnO film, and the photovoltaic effect at a Si/SnO junction, all in a single device, photodetectors were developed with state-of-the-art performance for the visible region.

RESUMO

Chemical cues provide potential mates with information about reproductive status and resource-holding potential. In the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), males can distinguish female reproductive status through chemical cues, and accessibility of males to females depends on their position in the hierarchy, determined in part by chemical cues. Here, we hypothesized that tilapia faecal cues are attractive to conspecifics once released into the water. C18 solid-phase extracts of faeces from dominant males and pre-ovulatory females evoked stronger olfactory epithelium electrical responses (EOG) than, respectively, subordinate males and post-spawning females. Mass spectrometry of the reverse-phase C18 high-performance liquid chromatography fractions of these extracts with highest EOG, identified by amino acids and bile acids. Faeces from pre-ovulatory females contain significantly higher concentrations of cholic acid (CA) and taurocholic acid (TCH) than both post-spawning females and males. A pool of amino acids had no effect on aggression or attraction in males. However, males were attracted to the scent of pre-ovulatory female faeces, as well as CA and TCH, when applied separately. This attraction was accompanied by increased digging behaviour compared to the odour of post-spawning females. CA and TCH exert their action through separate receptor mechanisms. These findings are consistent with a role for faeces - and bile acids therein - in chemical communication in this species, acting as an attractant for males to reproductive females.

RESUMO

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) and its analogues are naturally occurring toxins historically responsible for human poisoning fatalities in Eastern Asia. It is typically linked to the consumption of pufferfish and, to a lesser extent, marine gastropods and crabs. In the scope of a comprehensive project to understand the prevalence of emergent toxins in edible marine organisms, we report, for the first time, the detection of TTX analogues in the soft tissues of edible crabs, the European fiddler crab (Afruca tangeri) and green crab (Carcinus maenas), harvested in southern Portugal. No TTX was detected in the analyzed samples. However, three TTX analogues were detected-an unknown TTX epimer, deoxyTTX, and trideoxyTTX. These three analogues were found in the European fiddler crab while only trideoxyTTX was found in the green crab, suggesting that the accumulation of TTX analogues might be influenced by the crabs' different feeding ecology. These results highlight the need to widely monitor TTX and its analogues in edible marine species in order to provide adequate information to the European Food Safety Authority and to protect consumers.

RESUMO

Self-powered photodetectors (PDs) have been recognized as one of the developing trends of next-generation optoelectronic devices. Herein, it is shown that by introducing a thin layer of SnO film between the Si substrate and the ZnO film, the self-powered photodetector Al/Si/SnO/ZnO/ITO exhibits a stable and uniform violet sensing ability with high photoresponsivity and fast response. The SnO layer introduces a built-in electrostatic field to highly enhance the photocurrent by over 1000%. By analyzing energy diagrams of the p-n junction, the underlying physical mechanism of the self-powered violet PDs is carefully illustrated. A high photo-responsivity (R) of 93 mA W-1 accompanied by a detectivity (D*) of 3.1 × 1010 Jones are observed under self-driven conditions, when the device is exposed to 405 nm excitation laser wavelength, with a laser power density of 36 mW cm-2 and at a chopper frequency of 400 Hz. The Si/SnO/ZnO/ITO device shows an enhancement of 3067% in responsivity when compared to the Al/Si/ZnO/ITO. The photodetector holds an ultra-fast response of ≈ 2 µs, which is among the best self-powered photodetectors reported in the literature based on ZnO.

RESUMO

A new approach for the stabilization of the ferroelectric orthorhombic ZrO2 films is demonstrated through nanosecond laser annealing (NLA) of as-deposited Si/SiOx /W(14 nm)/ZrO2 (8 nm)/W(22 nm), grown by ion beam sputtering at low temperatures. The NLA process optimization is guided by COMSOL multiphysics simulations. The films annealed under the optimized conditions reveal the presence of the orthorhombic phase, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction, electron backscatter diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Macroscopic polarization-electric field hysteresis loops show ferroelectric behavior, with saturation polarization of 12.8 µC cm-2 , remnant polarization of 12.7 µC cm-2 and coercive field of 1.2 MV cm-1 . The films exhibit a wake-up effect that is attributed to the migration of point defects, such as oxygen vacancies, and/or a transition from nonferroelectric (monoclinic and tetragonal phase) to the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase. The capacitors demonstrate a stable polarization with an endurance of 6.0 × 105 cycles, demonstrating the potential of the NLA process for the fabrication of ferroelectric memory devices with high polarization, low coercive field, and high cycling stability.

RESUMO

Susceptibility to the severe Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), T36, is higher for Citrus macrophylla (CM) than for C. aurantium (CA). How host-virus interactions are reflected in host physiology is largely unknown. In this study, the profile of metabolites and the antioxidant activity in the phloem sap of healthy and infected CA and CM plants were evaluated. The phloem sap of quick decline (T36) and stem pitting (T318A) infected citrus, and control plants was collected by centrifugation, and the enzymes and metabolites analyzed. The activity of the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), in infected plants increased significantly in CM and decreased in CA, compared to the healthy controls. Using LC-HRMS2 a metabolic profile rich in secondary metabolites was assigned to healthy CA, compared to healthy CM. CTV infection of CA caused a drastic reduction in secondary metabolites, but not in CM. In conclusion, CA and CM have a different response to severe CTV isolates and we propose that the low susceptibility of CA to T36 may be related to the interaction of the virus with the host's metabolism, which reduces significantly the synthesis of flavonoids and antioxidant enzyme activity.

RESUMO

A refractive index sensor based on an on-chip silicon nitride (Si3N4) ridge waveguide long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) is theoretically designed. The waveguide sensor consists of a gold film to enable the plasmonic resonance on top of a Cytop polymer layer. A proper finite element method was used to design and optimize the geometric parameters at the optical wavelength of 633 nm. In addition, the spectral performance was evaluated using the transfer matrix method from 580 to 680 nm. The redshifted interference spectrum results from an increasing analyte refractive index. The sensitivities of 6313 dB/cm/RIU and 251.82 nm/RIU can be obtained with a 400 nm wide and 25 nm thick Au layer. The proposed sensor has the potential for point-of-care applications considering its compactness and simplicity of construction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The treatment target in SLE should be maintained stable by preventing flares. The objectives were to identify predictors of flare in patients attaining lupus low disease activity state (LLDAS), and to assess whether remission with no glucocorticoids is associated with lower risk of flares. METHODS: This was a cohort study of SLE patients followed in a referral centre over 3 years. Baseline was the first visit where each patient attained LLDAS. Flares up to 36 months' follow-up were identified by three instruments: revised Safety of Estrogen in Lupus Erythematosus National Assessment (SELENA) Flare Index (r-SFI), SLEDAI-2000 (SLEDAI-2K) and SLE Disease Activity Score (SLE-DAS). Demographic, clinical and laboratory parameters at baseline were evaluated as predictors of flare, with distinct models for each flare instrument, using survival analysis with univariate followed by multivariate Cox regression. Hazard ratios (HR) were determined with 95% CI. RESULTS: A total of 292 patients fulfilling LLDAS were included. Over follow-up, 28.4%, 24.7% and 13.4% of the patients developed one or more flare, according to r-SFI, SLE-DAS and SLEDAI-2K definitions, respectively. After multivariate analysis, the predictors of SLE-DAS flares were presence of anti-U1-ribonucleoprotein (anti-U1RNP) (HR = 2.16, 95% CI 1.30, 3.59), SLE-DAS score at baseline (HR = 1.27, 95% CI 1.04, 1.54) and immunosuppressants (HR = 2.43, 95% CI 1.43, 4.09). These predictors were equally significant for r-SFI and SLEDAI-2K flares. Remitted patients with no glucocorticoids presented a lower risk of SLE-DAS flares (HR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.37, 0.98). CONCLUSION: In patients with LLDAS, anti-U1RNP, disease activity scored by SLE-DAS and SLE requiring maintenance immunosuppressants predict higher risk of flare. Remission with no glucocorticoids is associated with lower risk of flares.

RESUMO

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent neurotoxin responsible for a human intoxication event in Spain associated with the consumption of trumpet shell Charonia lampas. In Europe, TTX is not regulated or monitored, and there is little knowledge about its presence in seafood. Here, we investigated the tissue distribution of TTX and analogues in three specimens of trumpet shell C. lampas bought in a market in southern Portugal. Toxin concentration was above the EFSA recommended limit in the non-edible tissues of all specimens and within the limit in the edible tissues of two specimens. 4,9-AnhydroTTX and 13 additional TTX analogues were detected in tissues, the most abundant being anhydrotrideoxyTTX and trideoxyTTX. These results suggest that although thorough evisceration may lower the amount of TTX consumed, it may not be sufficient to ensure consumer safety. Regular monitoring of TTX and analogues in trumpet shell and other edible gastropods is therefore recommended to avoid poisoning incidents.

RESUMO

Saxitoxin and its more than 50 analogues are a group of naturally occurring neurotoxins collectively designated as paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs). PSTs are toxic to humans and maximum legal limits in seafood have been implemented by regulatory authorities worldwide. In the European Union, monitoring of PSTs is performed using the AOAC Official Method 2005.06, based on liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection (LC- FLD). However, this method has been suggested to not effectively detect the emerging C-11 hydroxyl (M-toxins) and benzoate (GC-toxins) analogues, with these analogues currently not being surveyed in monitoring programs. In this study, a liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) method was used to search for these emerging PSTs in mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, contaminated following an intense Gymnodinium catenatum bloom in the Tagus estuary (Lisbon, Portugal). Five M-toxins (M1, M2, M6, dcM6, and dcM10), but no GC-toxins, were detected in the mussels' whole-soft body tissue. Moreover, the classical PSTs (C1 to C4, GTX 4 to GTX6, dcGTX1 to dcGTX4, dcSTX, dcNEO, and STX) were also found and comprised the largest fraction of the PSTs' profile. The presence of unregulated PSTs in edible mussel samples suggests potential seafood safety risks and urges further research to determine the frequency of these analogues in seafood and their contribution to toxicity.

RESUMO

Stimuli-responsive supramolecular receptors are important building blocks for the construction of self-assembled functional materials. We report the design and synthesis of a pH- and light-responsive 2-hydroxychalcone-ß-cyclodextrin conjugate (1-Ct) and its characterization by spectroscopic and computational methods. 1-Ct follows the typical reaction network of trans-chalcone-flavylium photoswitches. Upon light irradiation, 1-Ct can be photochemically converted into the cis-chalcone/hemiketal forms (1-Cc/1-B) under neutral pH conditions or to the flavylium cation (1-AH+) at acidic pH values. This stimuli-responsive ß-cyclodextrin host, 1-Ct, was found to form stronger intramolecular self-inclusion complexes (Kintra = 14) than 1-AH+ (Kintra = 3) and weaker than 1-Cc/1-B (overall Kintra = 179), allowing control over their stability and binding properties by combinations of pH and light stimuli.

RESUMO

In this work a plasmonic sensor with a D-Shaped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) is proposed to detect a wide range of analyte refractive index (RI ;na) by doping the pure silica (SiO2) core with distinct concentrations of Germanium Dioxide (GeO2), causing the presentation of high spectral sensitivity. In this case, the fiber is shaped by polishing a coating of SiO2, on the region that will be doped with GeO2, in the polished area, a thin gold (Au) layer, which constitutes the plasmonic material, is introduced, followed by the analyte, in a way which the gold layer is deposited between the SiO2. and the analyte. The numerical results obtained in the study shows that the sensor can determine efficiently a range of 0.13 refractive index units (RIU), with a limit operation where na varies from 1.32 to 1.45. Within this application, the sensor has reached an average wavelength sensitivity (WS) of up to 11,650.63 nm/RIU. With this level of sensitivity, the D-Shaped format and wide range of na detection, the proposed fiber has great potential for sensing applications in several areas.

RESUMO

The analysis of marine lipophilic toxins in shellfish products still represents a challenging task due to the complexity and diversity of the sample matrix. Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is the technique of choice for accurate quantitative measurements in complex samples. By combining unambiguous identification with the high selectivity of tandem MS, it provides the required high sensitivity and specificity. However, LC-MS is prone to matrix effects (ME) that need to be evaluated during the development and validation of methods. Furthermore, the large sample-to-sample variability, even between samples of the same species and geographic origin, needs a procedure to evaluate and control ME continuously. Here, we analyzed the toxins okadaic acid (OA), dinophysistoxins (DTX-1 and DTX-2), pectenotoxin (PTX-2), yessotoxin (YTX) and azaspiracid-1 (AZA-1). Samples were mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), both fresh and processed, and a toxin-free mussel reference material. We developed an accurate mass-extracted ion chromatogram (AM-XIC) based quantitation method using an Orbitrap instrument, evaluated the ME for different types and extracts of mussel samples, characterized the main compounds co-eluting with the targeted molecules and quantified toxins in samples by following a standard addition method (SAM). An AM-XIC based quantitation of lipophilic toxins in mussel samples using high resolution and accuracy full scan profiles (LC-HR-MS) is a good alternative to multi reaction monitoring (MRM) for instruments with HR capabilities. ME depend on the starting sample matrix and the sample preparation. ME are particularly strong for OA and related toxins, showing values below 50% for fresh mussel samples. Results for other toxins (AZA-1, YTX and PTX-2) are between 75% and 110%. ME in unknown matrices can be evaluated by comparing their full scan LC-HR-MS profiles with those of known samples with known ME. ME can be corrected by following SAM with AM-XIC quantitation if necessary.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Aortic root translocation (Nikaidoh), Rastelli, and réparation à l'etage ventriculaire (REV) are repair options for transposition of the great arteries (TGA) with ventricular septal defects and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (VSD-LVOTO) or double outlet right ventricle TGA type (DORV-TGA). METHODS: This retrospective study using The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database evaluates surgical procedure utilization and outcomes of patients undergoing repair of TGA-VSD-LVOTO and DORV-TGA with a Nikaidoh, Rastelli, or REV procedure. RESULTS: A total of 293 patients underwent repair at 82 centers (January 2010 to June 2019). Most patients underwent a Rastelli (n = 165, 56.3%) or a Nikaidoh (n = 119, 40.6%) operation; only 3.1% (n = 9) underwent a REV. High-volume centers performed the majority of the repairs. Fewer Nikaidoh than Rastelli patients had prior cardiac operations (n = 57 [48.7%] vs n = 102 [63.0%]; P = .004). Nikaidohs had longer median cardiopulmonary bypass time (227 [interquartile range (IQR), 167-299] minutes vs 175 [IQR, 133-225] minutes; P < .001) and median aortic cross-clamp times (131 [IQR, 91-175] minutes vs 105 [IQR, 82-141] minutes; P = .0015). Operative mortality was 3.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0%-7.0%; n = 5) for Rastelli, 4.4% (95% CI, 1.4%-9.9%; n = 5) for Nikaidoh, and 11.1% (95% CI, 0.3%-48.3%, n = 1) for REV. The rates of cardiac arrest, unplanned reoperation, mechanical circulatory support, prolonged ventilation, and permanent pacemaker placement were higher in the Nikaidoh population but with 95% CIs overlapping those of the other procedures. CONCLUSIONS: Rastelli and Nikaidoh procedures are the prevalent repair strategies for patients with DORV-TGA and TGA-VSD-LVOTO. Most are performed at high-volume institutions, and early outcomes are similar.

RESUMO

The objective of this work was to analyze the flow behavior of a commonly used filler (pregelatinised starch) and the effect of two of the most used lubricants (talc and colloidal silicon dioxide). The studies were carried out according to the conventional methods (Angle of Repose, Bulk and Tapped densities and from these the Compressibility Index) and shear cell methods (Brookfield Powder Flow Tester apparatus) described in European Pharmacopeia (Ph. Eur.). The results showed some surprising and unexpected values for the flow behavior of this filler under influence of the methods and the used glidants. Regarding pure starch and mixtures containing talc, the flow behavior was similar between them and the Flow Index (ffc) values varied between 1.8 and 4 (very cohesive and cohesive) as consolidation stress (σ1) increased. In this case, the glidant effect was not observed. However, for the mixtures of starch with colloidal silicon dioxide this effect was observed providing Flow Index (ffc) values between 2.6 and 8.9 (cohesive and easy-flowing) as consolidation stress (σ1) increased. Other parameters that are also used to characterize flow properties, more specifically, within silos, chutes and hoppers, such as effective angle of internal friction (φe), effective angle of wall friction (φx), critical arching and critical rathole values, provided similar information. Based in the obtained results from all tests it can be said that the talc did not induce improvement on the starch flow behavior in the used conditions in opposition to the effect produced by colloidal silicon dioxide.HighlightsExample 1. A good flowability of powders is needed in order to be compressed/filled;Example 2. The overcome the poor flow it is usual to use glidants;Example 3. CSD improved the pregelatinised starch (Starch 1500®) flow;Example 4. Talc do not have relevant effect in the pregelatinised starch (Starch 1500®) flow;Example 5. Powder FlowTester method showed more complete and consistent results.

RESUMO

Zirconia- and hafnia-based thin films have attracted tremendous attention in the past decade because of their unexpected ferroelectric behavior at the nanoscale, which enables the downscaling of ferroelectric devices. The present work reports an unprecedented ferroelectric rhombohedral phase of ZrO2 that can be achieved in thin films grown directly on (111)-Nb:SrTiO3 substrates by ion-beam sputtering. Structural and ferroelectric characterizations reveal (111)-oriented ZrO2 films under epitaxial compressive strain exhibiting switchable ferroelectric polarization of about 20.2 µC/cm2 with a coercive field of 1.5 MV/cm. Moreover, the time-dependent polarization reversal characteristics of Nb:SrTiO3/ZrO2/Au film capacitors exhibit typical bell-shaped curve features associated with the ferroelectric domain reversal and agree well with the nucleation limited switching (NLS) model. The polarization-electric field hysteresis loops point to an activation field comparable to the coercive field. Interestingly, the studied films show ferroelectric behavior per se, without the need to apply the wake-up cycle found in the orthorhombic phase of ZrO2. Overall, the rhombohedral ferroelectric ZrO2 films present technological advantages over the previously studied zirconia- and hafnia-based thin films and may be attractive for nanoscale ferroelectric devices.
