J Strength Cond Res 38(5): e211-e218, 2024-The purpose of this study was to compare the acute effects of traditional and alternated resistance exercises on acute neuromuscular responses (maximum repetition performance, fatigue index, and volume load), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and blood pressure (BP) in resistance-trained men. Fifteen recreationally resistance-trained men (age: 26.40 ± 4.15 years; height: 173 ± 5 cm, and total body mass: 78.12 ± 13.06 kg) were recruited and performed all 3 experimental conditions in a randomized order: (a) control (CON), (b) traditional (TRT), and (c) alternated (ART). Both conditions (TRT and ART) consisted of 5 sets of bilateral bench press, articulated bench press, back squat, and Smith back squat exercises at 80% 1RM until concentric muscular failure. The total number of repetitions performed across sets in the bench press followed a similar pattern for TRT and ART, with significant reductions between sets 3, 4, and 5 compared with set 1 (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference for set 4 between conditions with a lower number of repetitions performed in the TRT. The volume load was significantly higher for ART when compared with TRT. TRT showed significant reductions in BP after 10-, 40-, and 60-minute postexercise and when compared with CON after 40- and 60-minute postexercise. However, the effect size illustrated large reductions in systolic BP during recovery in both methods. Thus, it is concluded that both methods reduced postexercise BP.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of myofascial release and muscle energy on acute outcomes in trunk extensors active range-of-motion and strength in recreationally resistance-trained women. Seventeen apparently healthy women performed three experimental protocols using a cross-over, randomized (counterbalanced in Latin Square format), and within-subjects design: a) range-of-motion and strength test after a manual myofascial release protocol (MFR); b) flexibility and strength test after a muscle energy protocol (ME); and c) range-of-motion and strength test without myofascial release or muscle energy (control condition). Active trunk range-of-motion was measured via a sit-and-reach test and trunk extension strength via isometric dorsal dynamometer. A significant increase in range-of-motion was found for MFR (p = 0.002; d = 0.71) and ME (p < 0.001; d = 0.47) when comparing post-intervention with baseline values. Similarly, a significant increase for strength was found for MFR (p = 0.018; d = 0.10) when comparing post-intervention with baseline values. In conclusion, both techniques (MFR and ME) improved trunk range-of-motion with the sit and reach test immediately post-intervention; however, MFR showed greater magnitude increases in range-of-motion (MFR: (medium magnitude) vs ME: small magnitude). Due to the potential health implications, both (MFR and ME) responses should be among the many considerations for rehabilitation and performance exercise prescription when prescribing an exercise regimen.

Background: The application of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) to resistance exercise has attracted some attention, owing to increases in muscle performance. However, there is still no consensus on the optimal occlusion pressure for this procedure. This study compared the acute effects of IPC with high and low pressure of occlusion on upper and lower limb maximal strength and heart rate variability in recreationally trained individuals. Methods: Sixteen recreationally trained men (25.3 ± 1.7 years; 78.4 ± 6.2 kg; 176.9 ± 5.4 cm; 25.1 ± 1.5 m2 kg−1) were thoroughly familiarized with one repetition maximum (1 RM) testing in the following exercises: bench press (BP), front latissimus pull-down (FLPD), and shoulder press (SP) for upper limbs, and leg press 45º (LP45), hack machine (HM), and Smith Squat (SS) for lower limbs. The 1 RM exercises were then randomly performed on three separate days: after a high pressure (220 mmHg, IPChigh) and a low pressure (20 mmHg, IPClow) IPC protocol and after no intervention (control, CON). Heart rate variability was also measured at rest, during and after the entire IPC protocol, and after the exercises. Results: Maximal strength was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in both IPChigh and IPClow compared with CON in all upper- and lower-limb exercises. There was no difference between the two experimental conditions. No significant differences were found in the comparison across the different experimental conditions for LFnu, HFnu, LF/HF ratio, and RMSSDms. Conclusions: IPC performed with both high and low pressures influenced heart rate variability, which may partly explain the maximal strength enhancement.

With aging comes a reduction in neuromuscular and neuromotor function. Different strategies have been used to mitigate these functional losses. Certain manual therapy techniques and interventions have been explored with regard to their ability to improve functional capability and balance in an older adult population. The purpose of this study was to analyze the acute effects of two massage techniques on functional capability and balance performance in recreationally trained older adult women. Twenty-eight older adult women (66.74 ± 4.61 years) completed three interventions: a) stick massage followed by functional capability and balance performance tests (MMS), b) manual massage followed by functional capability and balance performance tests (MM), c) no MMS or MM (control condition (CC)) - only performed the functional capability and balance performance tests. Functional capability was assessed by four tests that are part of the Senior Fitness Test: the 6-min walk (W6), the chair sit-and-reach (CSR), the 8-foot up-and-go (8FUG), and the 30s-chair stand (30s-CS). Balance was assessed using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Significant differences (p < 0.001) were observed between MM and MMS compared to CC among 30s-CS, W6, CSR, and 8FUG. BBS showed a significant difference between MM and CC (p = 0.041). Both MM and MMS demonstrated significant acute improvements in the functional capability of recreationally trained elderly women and may be included in an exercise program.

J Strength Cond Res 35(11): 2993-2998, 2021-The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effect of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) in a resistance exercise (RE) training session on the number of repetitions performed, total volume, and rating of perceived exertion in recreationally trained and normotensive men. Sixteen recreationally trained and normotensive men completed 3 RE sessions in a counterbalanced and randomized order: (a) IPC protocol using 220 mm Hg followed by RE (IPC), (b) IPC cuff control protocol with 20 mm Hg followed by RE (CUFF), and (c) no IPC (control) followed by RE (CON). RE was performed with 3 sets of each exercise (bench press, leg press, lateral pulldown, hack machine squat, shoulder press, and Smith back squat) until concentric muscular failure, at 80% of one repetition maximum, with 90 seconds of rest between sets and 2 minutes of rest between exercises. Ischemic preconditioning and CUFF consisted of 4 cycles of 5 minutes of occlusion/low pressure alternating with 5 minutes of no occlusion (0 mm Hg) using a pneumatic tourniquet applied around the subaxillary region of the upper arm. For each condition, the number of repetitions completed, total volume of work performed, and rating of perceived exertion were determined. No significant difference was found for rating of perceived exertion between any experimental protocol. Ischemic preconditioning significantly (p < 0.05) increased the number of repetitions across exercises. Consequently, total volume performed (sum of total number of repetitions x load for each exercise) was significantly higher in IPC (46,170 kg) compared with CON (34,069 kg) and CUFF (36,590 kg) across all exercises. This work may have important implications for athletic populations because it demonstrates increase in muscle performance outcomes during a single RE session. Therefore, performing IPC before RE could be an important exercise prescription recommendation to increase maximum repetition performance and total volume of work performed and thus potentially increase desired training adaptations (i.e., strength and hypertrophy).

The purpose of the present study was to verify the acute effect of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort, acid-base balance and intermittent isometric handgrip test performance in Jiu-Jitsu athletes. Ten male (22.2 ± 3.9 years; 174 ± 0.07 cm; 74.5 ± 8.9 kg) jiu-jitsu athletes participated in this counterbalanced double-blind crossover study. Two protocols, a) supplementation with 0.3 g.kg-1 of body weight of sodium bicarbonate, and b) supplementation with 0.045 g.kg-1 of body weight of placebo substance, were employed. Gastrointestinal tolerability was assessed by the questionnaire. Blood samples were collected at three time points (baseline, pre-ISO, and post-ISO) to determine the responses of potential hydrogenionic (pH), bicarbonate (HCO3- ), base excess (EB) and lactate concentrations. The maximum voluntary contraction test and the intermittent isometric contraction test were also performed. As a result, none of the athletes reported significant gastrointestinal discomfort (p > 0.05). HCO3- , pH, and EB at the pre-ISO and post-ISO moments were significantly higher for the sodium bicarbonate protocol. Lactate concentrations were significantly higher for both post-ISO protocols (p = 0.000). There was no significant difference in the performance of the maximum voluntary contraction test and the intermittent isometric contraction test (p > 0.05). Thus, we conclude that sodium bicarbonate supplementation does not generate adverse responses resulting in gastrointestinal discomfort, and does not benefit performance yet promotes a state of metabolic alkalosis.

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) has been used to increase performance in sports. The aim of this study was to compare the acute effects of IPC with different warm-up methods on the number of repetitions and total volume in resistance exercise (RE). Sixteen healthy men recreationally trained in RE participated in this study. After the anthropometric evaluation and familiarization, a one-repetition maximum (1RM) test and retest were performed in the bench press (BP) and in the leg press 45° (LP) exercise. After these tests, participants were randomly assigned to one of the five protocols: a) IPC; b) SHAM; c) a specific warm-up (SW); d) aerobic exercise (AE), and e) active stretching (AS) prior to performing 3 sets at 80% 1RM until concentric failure. The number of repetitions was higher following IPC compared to the SW following three sets both for the BP and LP. Similarly, the number of repetitions for IPC was higher in comparison to SHAM following three sets for the LP. The number of repetitions was higher following IPC compared to AE following 1st and 2nd sets for the LP and following the 2nd set for the BP. Finally, the number of repetitions was higher following IPC compared to AS following 1st and 2nd sets for the LP. The total volume was higher following IPC compared to SHAM, SW, AE, and AS for both the BP and LP. The IPC protocol increased the number of maximum repetitions and the total volume when compared to the other tested methods, thus indicating a better utilization during the pre-work warm-up. These results indicate positive associative responses to IPC with performance maintenance, which is of importance for both athletes and coaches.

Increases in joint range-of-motion may be beneficial for improving performance and reducing injury risk. This study investigated the effects of different self-massage volumes and modalities on passive hip range-of-motion. Twenty-five recreationally resistance-trained men performed four experimental protocols using a counterbalanced, randomized, and within-subjects design; foam rolling (FR) or roller massage (RM) for 60 or 120-s. Passive hip flexion and extension range-of-motion were measured in a counterbalanced and randomized order via manual goniometry before self-massage (baseline) and immediately, 10-, 20-, and 30-min following each self-massage intervention. Following FR or RM of quadriceps, there was an increase in hip flexion range-of-motion at Post-0 (FR: Δ = 19.28°; RM: Δ = 14.96°), Post-10 (FR: Δ = 13.03°; RM: Δ = 10.40°), and Post-20 (FR: Δ = 6.00°; RM: Δ = 4.64°) for all protocols, but these did not exceed the minimum detectable change at Post-10 for RM60 and RM120, and Post-20 for FR60, FR120, RM60, and RM120. Similarly, hip extension range-of-motion increased at Post-0 (FR: Δ = 8.56°; RM: Δ = 6.56°), Post-10 (FR: Δ = 4.64°; RM: Δ = 3.92°), and Post-20 (FR: Δ = 2.80°; RM: Δ = 1.92°), but did not exceed the minimum detectable change at Post-10 for FR60, RM60, and RM120, and Post-20 for FR60, FR120, RM60, and RM120. In conclusion, both FR and RM increased hip range-of-motion but larger volumes (120- vs. 60-second) and FR produced the greatest increases. These findings have implications for self-massage prescription and implementation, in both rehabilitation and athletic populations.

J Strength Cond Res 33(4): 987-994, 2019-The purpose of this study was to analyze the acute effects of different foam rolling (FR) volumes on knee extensors fatigue and shoulder passive range-of-motion (PROM). Twelve recreationally active women were recruited for participation in 2 experiments separated by 3 weeks, and the same subjects performed all procedures in each experiment. In experiment 1, subjects performed 3 sets of knee extensions using a predetermined 10 repetition maximum load to momentary concentric failure: control condition (CG) with passive rest and 2 FR conditions for the hamstrings using 2 volumes (60 and 120 seconds; FR60 and FR120, respectively). Experiment 2 consisted of 2 shoulder flexion and extension baseline PROM tests. Following baseline measures, subjects performed a single 60-second bout of FR on the hamstrings. Outcome PROM measures were measured through manual goniometry immediately (post-0), 10 minutes (post-10), 20 minutes (post-20), 30 minutes (post-30), 24 hours (post-24), and 48 hours (post-48) after the intervention to assess the effects on PROM over an extended period. Fatigue index indicated significantly greater fatigue resistance for CG when compared with FR60 (p = 0.035; [INCREMENT]% = 6.49) and FR120 (p = 0.002; [INCREMENT]% = 9.27), and there were no significant differences between FR60 and FR120 (p = 0.513; [INCREMENT]% = 2.78). Shoulder flexion PROM increased in post-0 as compared to baseline 1 (p = 0.002; d = 1.58), baseline 2 (p < 0.001; d = 1.92), and baseline higher measurement (p < 0.001; d = 1.59) and remained increased for post-10 as compared to baseline 2 (p = 0.017; d = 1.55). Shoulder extension PROM increased in post-0 as compared to baseline 1 (p < 0.001; d = 2.61), baseline 2 (p < 0.001; d = 2.83), and baseline higher measurement (p < 0.001; d = 2.59) and remained increased for post-10 as compared to baseline 1 (p < 0.001; d = 1.93), baseline 2 (p < 0.001; d = 2.16), and baseline higher measurement (p < 0.001; d = 1.91) and post-20 as compared to baseline 1 (p = 0.008; d = 1.58), baseline 2 (p = 0.001; d = 1.85), and baseline higher measurement (p = 0.011; d = 1.55). Foam rolling volumes equal to or greater than 60 seconds are detrimental to the ability to continually produce force in the lower extremity and should not be applied to the hamstrings muscle group between sets of knee extensions. PROM results indicate that FR applied to the hamstrings demonstrates an increase in both shoulder flexion and extension PROM. This work may have important clinical (rehabilitation) implications, as it demonstrates global effects of FR on functional outcomes.

J Strength Cond Res 33(10): 2684-2693, 2019-The purpose of this study was to compare the acute effect of different combinations and order of resistance exercise (RE) and stretching exercise (SE) on heart rate variability, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Twenty subjects, recreationally trained, performed 5 sessions in a random order: (a) SE followed by RE no rest (SE + RE), (b) RE followed by SE no rest (RE + SE), (c) SE between RE sets (SBE), (d) SE isolated, and (e) RE isolated. Heart rate variability, SBP, and DBP were collected for 15 minutes before (baseline) and 60 minutes after each experimental session. A significant decrease was found for standardized deviation of differences between adjacent normal r-r intervals (RMSSDms) SE + RE (-50.79%), SE (+9.2%), SBE (-42.8%), and RE (-46.3%). Similarly, a significant increase was found for LFnu in SE + RE (+12.8%) and SBE (+16.6%). In addition, a significant decrease was found for HFnu in SE + RE (-34.8%) and SBE (-39.7%). Finally, a significant decrease was found for SBP in SE (-6.1%). In conclusion, this study indicated that SE followed by RE promotes a reduction in LFnu and RMSSDnu, with trivial to small magnitude decreases in SBP. Therefore, performing SE either before or between RE would be an important exercise prescription recommendation to lower cardiac load and consequently greater safety.

BACKGROUND: Foam rolling (FR) is a ubiquitous intervention utilised for the purpose of acutely increasing the range of motion without subsequent decreases in performance. Thus, it is commonly used during the periworkout period-that is, prior to, during, or after an athlete's workout. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated how different FR durations applied to the quadriceps during the interset rest periods affects the numbers of repetitions in the knee extension exercise. METHODS: Twenty-five females completed four sets of knee extensions with 10 repetitions of maximum load to concentric failure on four occasions. Between each set, a 4-minute rest interval was implemented in which participants either passively rested or performed FR for different durations (60 seconds, 90 seconds, and 120 seconds). The 95% confidence intervals revealed a dose-dependent relationship in which longer durations of FR resulted in fewer completed repetitions. RESULTS: On average, the number of repetitions with PR was 13.8% greater than that in FR120, 8.6% greater than that in FR90, and 9.1% greater than that in FR60. CONCLUSION: For the purposes of performance and likely adaptation, interset FR seems to be detrimental to a person's ability to continually produce force, and should not be applied to the agonist muscle group between sets of knee extensions.

El objetivo de este estudio es identificar y describir las medidas antropométricas, composición corporal y somatotipo de futbolistas brasileños en varias categorías y posiciones de accionamiento en el campo. La muestra de este estudio está conformada por un grupo de 1.115 jugadores de fútbol masculino y divididos en ocho grupos: Sub 07 (n=60); Sub 09 (n=75); Sub 11 (n=140); Sub 13 (n=182); Sub 15 (n=184); Sub 17 (n=166); Sub 20 (n=144) y Profesionales (n=164). Se utilizó una estadística descriptiva (media ± desviación estándar) a través del SSPS y utlilizando v21 "One-way ANOVA" complementando la prueba "Bonferroni" de significância, considerando um valor p<0,05. Las variables antropométricas relacionados con la composición corporal: peso corporal, altura, porcentaje de grasa corporal, SDC (suma de los pliegues cutáneos), mostraron la evolución perfecta entre las categorías analizadas, lo que significa que existe una armonía en el proceso de evolución entre los grupos.


Objetivo: identificar e descrever as medidas antropométricas, de composição corporal e do somatotipo de jogadores brasileiros em diversas categorias e posições no campo. Método: a amostra consistiu em 1.115 jogadores de futebol do sexo masculino e divididos em oito grupos: Under 07(n = 60); Sub-09 (n = 75); Sub 11 (n = 140); Sub 13 (n = 182); Sub 15 (n =184); Sub 17 (n = 166); Sub-20 (n = 144) e Professional (n = 164). Estatística descritiva (média ± desvio padrão) foi utilizada através do SPSS, utilizandov21 “one-way ANOVA”, complementar “Bonferroni” significado, um teste considerando o valor de p <0,05. Resultado: as variáveis antropométricas relacionadas à composição corporal: massa corporal, estatura, percentual de gordura corporal, SDC (somatório das dobras cutâneas) mostraram a evolução perfeita entre as categorias analisadas. Conclusão: há harmonia no processo de evolução entre grupos.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine rest interval length between agonist-antagonist paired set training (PS) on maximal repetition performance, rating of perceived exertion, and neuromuscular fatigue. METHODS: Fourteen trained men (age, 24.2 ± 1.1 years; height, 175 ± 5.5 cm; body mass, 76.6 ± 7.0 kg) performed two experimental protocols in random order with 2 minutes (P2) or 4 minutes (P4) between agonist-antagonist PS, which consisted of a bench press set followed immediately by a seated row set with 8-repetition maximum loads, respectively. A total of three PS were performed for each rest interval protocol. The total repetitions performed and the rating of perceived exertion were recorded for each exercise set within each rest interval protocol. Electromyography signals were recorded for the posterior deltoid, biceps brachii, pectoralis major, and triceps brachii muscles during the SR exercise. The electromyography signals were then used to calculate a fatigue index for each rest interval protocol. RESULTS: No significant differences were identified in the total repetitions completed between rest interval protocols for the bench press (P2 = 22.9 ± 1.3 and P4 = 22.6 ± 0.8) and seated row (P2 = 25.4 ± 1.7 and P4 = 25.1 ± 1.3). However, a significantly higher fatigue index was found for all muscles under the P2 versus the P4 protocol. CONCLUSION: When performing agonist-antagonist PS, prescribing a shorter rest interval between PS may induce higher levels of fatigue, albeit with similar total repetitions versus a longer rest interval.

En este trabajo se estudió la relación entre las dimensiones antropométricas y la insatisfacción corporal en socios de gimnasios. Los participantes fueron 276 personas de Brasil socios de centros de fitness (168 varones y 108 mujeres) de una edad comprendida entre los 17 y 39 años (m = 23.93, sd = 5.17). después de la medición de la masa corporal (Mc), del índice de masa corporal (IMc) y de la porcentaje de grasa corporal (% Gc), los participantes indicaran las siluetas más semejantes a su apariencia corporal (silueta real – sr) y a su apariencia corporal ideal (silueta ideal – sI), lo que permitió el cálculo de la insatisfacción corporal como la discrepancia entre la sI y la sr. IMc y % Gc fueron agrupados por categorías de insatisfacción corporal y analizados por medio de ANoVA univariada y de medidas repetidas. Los resultados revelaron que sólo 1.2% de los hombres y 6.5% de las mujeres se consideraban satisfechos con su cuerpo. Las comparaciones de las sr por sexo indicaran que los hombres y mujeres consideran sus actuales sr significativamente menos corpulentas que las sI (p < .001), aunque el grado de insatisfacción fue semejante en ambos sexos. Además, los resultados demostraron que la relación entre la composición corporal y la insatisfacción corporal sólo se demuestra en personas que se sienten muy insatisfechas con su imagen y apariencia corporal (AU)


The purpose of this study was to identify the anthropometric dimensions related with body image dissatisfaction among fitness center users. Participants were 276 Brazilian members of fitness centers (168 males and 108 females) with ages between 17 and 39 years (mage = 23.93, sd = 5.17). After body mass (BM), body mass index (BMI) and body fat (% BF) were measured, participants indicated their current (cs) and ideal (Is) silhouettes, allowing the calculation of body dissatisfaction as the difference between Is and cs. BMI and % BF were grouped by body dissatisfaction category and analyzed using one-way and repeated measures ANoVA. results revealed that only 1.2 % of men and 6.5 % of women considered themselves satisfied with their body. comparisons of global ratings of their cs and Is revealed that male and female individuals reported that their current bodies were significantly less muscular than their ideal bodies (p < .001), although the degree of dissatisfaction revealed no significant difference between sexes. Moreover, results demonstrated that the relationship between body composition and body dissatisfaction only occurs in individuals that feel very dissatisfied with their body image and appearance (AU)

The purpose of this study was to assess the acute effects of the static and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching methods on local muscular endurance performance at intensities between 40 and 80% of 1 repetition maximum (1RM) for the knee extension (KE) and bench press (BP) exercises. Fifteen male volunteers (23.9 ± 4.3 years; 174.5 ± 8.5 cm; and 77.8 ± 7.6 kg), who were nonathletes but had previous experience in resistance training, volunteered for this study. Participants were assigned to 9 randomly ordered experimental conditions, in which all subjects performed endurance tests at 40, 60, and 80% of 1RM, preceded by static stretching (SS), PNF, and no stretching (NS) in the KE and BP exercises. One-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (NS × SS × PNF) revealed an influence of stretching for all intensities only when the PNF treatment was used. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in the KE exercise, with reductions in the number of repetitions when comparing PNF40 (23.7 ± 2.7) to NS40 (27.5 ± 3.6); PNF60 (12.6 ± 2.8) to SS60 (16.5 ± 4.1) and NS60 (17.3 ± 3.2); and PNF80 (6.3 ± 1.7) to SS80 (9.9 ± 2.5) and NS80 (9.8 ± 2.3) conditions. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were also found for the BP exercise with decreases in the number of repetitions when comparing PNF60 (13.7 ± 2.8) to NS60 (17.0 ± 3.0) and PNF80 (6.2 ± 2.2) to NS80 (8.7 ± 2.3) conditions. These findings suggest that for the intensities studied (40, 60, and 80% 1RM), only the PNF method decreased muscle endurance. Strength and conditioning professionals may want to consider avoiding PNF stretching before activities requiring local muscular endurance performance.

Objetivo: evaluar el efecto de un programa de entrenamiento de fuerza durante 20 semanas sobre la autonomía funcional de mujeres mayores saludables. Material y métodos: participaron 24 mujeres mayores de 65 años divididas en grupo experimental (GE; n = 13) y grupo control (GC; n = 11). El GE fue sometido a 20 semanas de intervención constituida por 2 fases de entrenamiento: extensión de rodillas, supino en posición sentada, tirón en la polea, flexión unilateral de rodillas, flexión parcial de tronco (abdominal), trabajo de bíceps y tríceps en la polea. Se determinó la autonomía funcional mediante una batería de pruebas incluidas en el protocolo GDLAM antes del ejercicio y en la 4.a y 20.a semana. Se compararon los resultados mediante ANOVA multivariada para medidas repetidas, siguiendo la prueba post hoc de Tukey para muestras desiguales, adoptando un nivel de significación estadística p 5,86; p < 0,005, respectivamente) en relación al GC. Conclusión: la realización de entrenamiento de fuerza durante 20 semanas muestra una mejora en la autonomía funcional para realización de las actividades de la vida diaria en mujeres mayores sanas. Cabe indicar ejercicio específico en grupos seleccionados de población mayor con riesgo de pérdida de autonomía


Objective: to evaluate the effect of a 20-week strength training program on functional status in healthy elderly women. Material and methods: twenty-four women aged more than 65 years old participated in this study. The women were divided into an experimental group (EG, n = 13) and a control group (CG, n = 11). The EG underwent a 20-week intervention consisting of two training phases: knee extension, supine in a sitting position, machine lat pull-down, unilateral knee flexion, partial flexion of the trunk (abdominal), and biceps curl and triceps extension against resistance. Functional status was determined through a battery of tests included in the GDLAM protocol before exercise and at weeks 4 and 20. The results were compared through multivariate repeated measures ANOVA, with the post-hoc Tukey test for unequal samples. Statistical significance was set at p 5.86; p < 0.005, respectively) in comparison with the CG. Conclusion: The 20-week strength training program improved functional autonomy in activities of daily living in healthy elderly women. Specific exercises should be indicated in selected groups of the elderly population at risk of loss of autonomy
