RESUMO

The objective of this study was to identify spatial disparities in the distribution of cancer hotspots within Romania. Additionally, the research aimed to track prevailing trends in cancer prevalence and mortality according to a cancer type. The study covered the timeframe between 2008 and 2017, examining all 3,181 territorial administrative units. The analysis of spatial distribution relied on two key parameters. The first parameter, persistence, measured the duration for which cancer prevalence exceeded the 75th percentile threshold. Cancer prevalence refers to the total number of individuals in a population who have been diagnosed with cancer at a specific time point, including both newly diagnosed cases (occurrence) and existing cases. The second parameter, the time continuity of persistence, calculated the consecutive months during which cancer prevalence consistently surpassed the 75th percentile threshold. Notably, persistence of elevated values was also evident in lowland regions, devoid of any discernible direct connection to environmental conditions. In conclusion, this work bears substantial relevance to regional health policies, by aiding in the formulation of prevention strategies, while also fostering a deeper comprehension of the socioeconomic and environmental factors contributing to cancer.

RESUMO

Anthracene is considered to be a popular choice as a building block for organic semiconductors. The present work is dedicated to the synthesis and characterization of a novel semiconductor (10-OPIA) possessing mesogenic properties, which allows better control over charge transport in the bulk of a material. A novel anthracene-based molecule is characterized for its potential applications: frontier molecular energy levels are studied by optical spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry and compared to values obtained via ab initio calculations. Thermophysical and mesogenic properties are investigated by optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Charge transport properties are characterized by means of an OFET device. It is found that this material can be easily aligned and exhibits a field effect hole mobility of 5.22 × 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1 and an ON/OFF ratio of 104 in the device prepared by drop casting. Finally, the photoconductive properties of this novel material are addressed in order to investigate its potential applications for organic phototransistors: it exhibits a large photoconductive gain of >100 and a photo-responsivity of >1 A W-1.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Social and vocational reintegration of persons with brain injury is an important element in their rehabilitation. AIMS: To evaluate the 5-year outcome of persons with brain injury included in 2008 in the Aquitaine Unit for Evaluation, Training and Social and Vocational Counselling programme (UEROS). METHOD: 57 persons with brain injury were recruited from those who completed the 2008 UEROS programme. Five years later, an interview was done to assess family and vocational status, autonomy and life satisfaction. These results were compared with those from persons completing the 1997-1999 programme. RESULTS: The typical person entered the 2008 UEROS programme 6 years after a severe brain injury (42%) and was male, single and 35 years. At the 5-year follow-up, more persons lived with a partner (+23%) and lived in their own home (+21%). 47% were working vs 11% on entering the programme. Approximately half were satisfied or very satisfied with their quality of life. Having a job in 2013 was associated with a high education level, less cognitive sequelae, having a job in 2008 and no health condition. CONCLUSIONS: The UEROS programme is effective with regard to return-to-work and improvement of autonomy in persons with brain injury, irrespective of length of time from injury.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE STATE: A pilot-study with a comparison approach between aging and traumatic brain injury (TBI) is proposed to investigate everyday object memory patterns using a virtual HOMES test. METHODS: Sixteen young controls, 15 older adults and 15 TBI patients underwent the HOMES test and traditional tests. RESULTS: Older adults and TBI patients exhibited similar HOMES performances: poor recall, a greater recognition benefit, high false recognitions, but intact clustering and proactive interference effects. The age-related differences for HOMES measures were mainly mediated by executive functioning, while the HOMES performances in the TBI group were correlated with memory measures. CONCLUSION: The differential cognitive mediating effects for a similar everyday-like memory pattern are discussed by highlighting the need for more cautious interpretations of cognitive mechanisms behind similar behavioral patterns in different populations especially in clinical and rehabilitation settings.

RESUMO

The scope and limitations of the dehalogenation of aromatic halides 1 and 4a-p using metallic calcium in ethanol at room temperature were revealed. The cleavage of the carbon-chlorine bond on the aromatic ring bearing electron-donating group was difficult compared to the one bearing electron-withdrawing group. Moreover, we applied this method to the dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in transformer oil. It was also found that the dechlorination took place easily under mild conditions. The existence of PCBs residue in the reaction at room temperature was less than 0.04% according to the GC-MS analysis. The chlorine was identified as calcium chloride.

RESUMO

Reaction of three aromatic sulfonamides possessing a primary amino group, i.e., sulfanilamide, homosulfanilamide and p-aminoethyl-benzenesulfonamide with heterocyclic and aromatic aldehydes afforded a series of Schiff bases. Metal complexes of some of these Schiff bases with divalent transition ions such as Zn(II), Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) have also been obtained. The new compounds were assayed as inhibitors of three isozymes of carbonic anhydrase (CA). Several of the new compounds showed a modest selectivity for the membrane-bound (bovine) isozyme CA IV (bCA IV) as compared to the cytosolic human isozymes hCA I and II, in contrast to classical inhibitors which generally possess a 17-33 times lower affinity for bCA IV. This greater selectivity toward bCA IV is due mainly to a slightly decreased potency against hCA II relative to classical inhibitors. However, metal complexes of these Schiff bases possessed an increased affinity for hCA II, being less inhibitory against bCA IV. The first type of compounds reported here (i.e., the Schiff bases of aromatic sulfonamides with heterocyclic aldehydes) might thus lead to the development of low molecular weight isozyme specific CA IV inhibitors. The difference in affinity for the three isozymes of the inhibitors reported by us here is tentatively explained on the basis of recent X-ray crystallographic studies of these isozymes and their adducts with substrates/inhibitors.

RESUMO

Corneocytes were prepared from stratum corneum after extraction of the lipids and then were reaggregated with model lipids to form a membrane. The transport of water through the membrane was found to be similar to earlier published values for reaggregated stratum corneum formed with the indigenous lipids. Similar values were also obtained when only partially saponified free fatty acids were present as lipids. These results support an earlier hypothesis, that the lipid barrier to water penetration of the stratum corneum is determined by the structural organization of the lipids, not by the exact chemical structure of individual species.
