RESUMO

Under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, new controls are being implemented to reduce emissions of HFC-23 (CHF[Formula: see text]), a by-product during the manufacture of HCFC-22 (CHClF[Formula: see text]). Starting in 2015, China and India, who dominate global HCFC-22 production (75% in 2017), set out ambitious programs to reduce HFC-23 emissions. Here, we estimate that these measures should have seen global emissions drop by 87% between 2014 and 2017. Instead, atmospheric observations show that emissions have increased and in 2018 were higher than at any point in history (15.9 [Formula: see text]). Given the magnitude of the discrepancy between expected and observation-inferred emissions, it is likely that the reported reductions have not fully materialized or there may be substantial unreported production of HCFC-22, resulting in unaccounted-for HFC-23 by-product emissions. The difference between reported and observation-inferred estimates suggests that an additional ~309 Tg [Formula: see text]-equivalent emissions were added to the atmosphere between 2015 and 2017.

The hydroxyl radical (OH) is the dominant oxidizing chemical in the atmosphere. It destroys most air pollutants and many gases involved in ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect. Global measurements of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (CH3CCl3, methyl chloroform) provide an accurate method for determining the global and hemispheric behavior of OH. Measurements show that CH3CCl3 levels rose steadily from 1978 to reach a maximum in 1992 and then decreased rapidly to levels in 2000 that were lower than the levels when measurements began in 1978. Analysis of these observations shows that global OH levels were growing between 1978 and 1988, but the growth rate was decreasing at a rate of 0.23 +/- 0.18% year(-2), so that OH levels began declining after 1988. Overall, the global average OH trend between 1978 and 2000 was -0.64 +/- 0.60% year(-1). These variations imply important and unexpected gaps in current understanding of the capability of the atmosphere to cleanse itself.

A new gas chromatographic method developed to quantitatively determine important atmospheric halocarbons is described. Target compounds include replacement CFCs, chlorinated solvents, and biosynthesized (naturally produced) organohalogens, all trace gases in the atmosphere at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 600 pptv (where pptv = 1 part in 10(-)(12) by volume). A combination of ultralow concentrations and relatively small electron attachment cross sections renders these compounds very difficult to routinely measure in the background air typical of remote atmospheric monitoring stations. Detection is achieved by preconcentration of a 200-mL air sample using an adsorbent-filled microtrap and enhancement of electron capture detector response by oxygen doping one of two detectors connected in series. Oxygen doping specifically targets halocarbons with relatively poor electron attachment rate coefficients. The work described here details construction of a novel analytical system, laboratory trials, and optimization followed by an extended field campaign at a remote atmospheric monitoring station, Mace Head, Ireland. A calibration standard or ambient air sample was acquired every hour using a cyclic, automated procedure without employing cryogenic preconcentration or refocusing. Overall precision of the analytical method for the target compounds is between 0.3 and 1.5%.

Determination of the atmospheric concentrations and lifetime of trichloroethane (CH(3)CCI(3)) is very important in the context of global change. This halocarbon is involved in depletion of ozone, and the hydroxyl radical (OH) concentrations determined from its lifetime provide estimates of the lifetimes of most other hydrogen-containing gases involved in the ozone layer and climate. Global measurements of trichloroethane indicate rising concentrations before and declining concentrations after late 1991. The lifetime of CH(3)CCI(3) in the total atmosphere is 4.8 +/- 0.3 years, which is substantially lower than previously estimated. The deduced hydroxyl radical concentration, which measures the atmosphere's oxidizing capability, shows little change from 1978 to 1994.

RESUMO

Two surface samples collected from the Chryse Planitia region of Mars were heated to temperatures up to 500 degrees C, and the volatiles that they evolved were analyzed with a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. Only water and carbon dioxide were detected. This implies that organic compounds have not accumulated to the extent that individual components could be detected at levels of a few parts in 10(9) by weight in our samples. Proposed mechanisms for the accumulation and destruction of organic compounds are discussed in the light of this limit.

A gas chromatographic column has been developed for use in the remote analysis of the martian surface. The column, which utilizes a liquid-modified organic adsorbent (Tenax) as the stationary phase, provides efficient transmission and resolution of nanogram quantities of organic materials in the presence of millionfold excesses of water and carbon dioxide.

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometric studies of two microorganisms, Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus subtilis var. niger, indicate that the majority of thermal fragments originate from the principal classes of bio-organic matter found in living systems such as protein and carbohydrate. Furthermore, there is a close qualitative similarity between the type of pyrolysis products found in microorganisms and the pyrolysates of other biological materials. Conversely, there is very little correlation between microbial pyrolysates and comparable pyrolysis studies of meteoritic and fossil organic matter. These observations will aid in the interpretation of a soil organic analysis experiment to be performed on the surface of Mars in 1975. The science payload of this landed mission will include a combined pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry instrument as well as several "direct biology experiments" which are designed to search for extraterrestrial life.

The Pueblito de Allende meteorite contains only 0.1-0.5 ppm of solvent-extractable carbon, most or all of which is due to terrestrial contamination. Determinations of the total carbon content gives values from 0.23 to 0.35 per cent. The presumed indigenous insoluble carbon is thus present in a ratio of 2300:1 relative to contaminant carbon. A sample of the meteorite was extracted with a deuterated solvent containing benzene:methanol (4:1 w/w) to remove contaminants and then was subjected to pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to investigate the nature of the remaining carbon. The pyrolysis products (about 20 ppm) consisted chiefly of aromatic and substituted aromatic hydrocarbons. The pyrolysis results were confirmed by oxidative thermal analysis which showed that the bulk of the carbon present was a macromolecular structure and not graphite. This suggests that an insoluble nongraphitic condensed aromatic polymer is indigenous to the meteorite. The origin and precise chemical structure of this material has not been determined, but it bears a superficial resemblance to coal-like structures.

RESUMO

Soils from the dry-valley region of Antarctica can be sterile by the usual microbiological criteria and yet contain significant amounts of organic carbon. Examination of one such soil shows that the organic material is finely divided anthracite coal. These findings have significant implications for the biological exploration of Mars.

RESUMO

The fatty acid composition of filamentous bacterial masses from two very hot Yellowstone Park springs is not unusual despite the extreme environment. Both populations have a series of C(14) to C(20) straight-chain acids with a maximum at C(18), and a series of saturated iso acids with a maximum at C(17) in one case and C(19) in the other. The fatty acid pattern of this anomalous group of organisms is like that of bacteria but not of blue-green algae. Both populations have similar polar lipids and identical carotenoids. It is speculated that these organisms may be adapted to their high-temperature environment by means of stable lipoprotein membrane systems.
