Laser technology has made a significant impact on the nursing profession. Technology challenges traditional practices, and presents an array of new clinical therapies and associated hazards for both patients and medical personnel. Educational opportunities must be objectively evaluated if consumers are to obtain credible, valid, and effective training that will prepare them to comply with current standards and recommended practices.

Over the past 10 years, nurses have been challenged to integrate laser technology into both hospital and office-based clinical practices. Understanding the fundamental concepts of lasers in medicine enables the nurse to function more effectively in an expanded role that focuses on patient education, technical skill, and collaborative practice.
