RESUMO

Morel-Lavallée lesion is a post-traumatic degloving cyst, usually filled with blood, lymph or necrotic tissue, which mostly develops in the area around greater trochanter. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is essential to prevent further complications, such as compression of surrounding structures. X-rays have limited use and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice in diagnosing the lesion. We report a case of a 35-year female presenting with left thigh pain after a fall from motorcycle almost 21/2 years ago. Ultrasound and MRI confirmed the presence of Morel-Lavallée lesion involving the left pelvis and upper thigh. Given the chronicity of lesion and extensive tissue involvement, the patient underwent surgical excision of the lesion with favourable long-term outcomes. In this case report and literature review, we discuss the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, radiological findings and management options for Morel-Lavallée lesion. Key Words: Morel-Lavallée lesion, Post-traumatic cyst, Degloving Injury, Tangential cyst.

RESUMO

Pelvic apophyseal avulsion fractures are uncommon injuries that typically occur in adolescents during sporting activities. Iliac crest (IC) apophyseal injuries represent a small percentage avulsion fracture around the pelvis with a reported incidence rate of 5%. We present a rare case of an adolescent boy who sustained a combined anterior superior iliac spine/iliac crest apophyseal avulsion fracture while playing football. With painful limited hip range of movement and inability to weight-bear, plain film and computed tomography scan illustrated a displaced fracture which was managed conservatively with an excellent clinical and radiological outcome. A review of apophyseal fractures around the pelvis, including incidence, mechanism of injury and treatment options regarding surgical versus conservative treatment, are discussed.

RESUMO

Performance and load testing data of a three bladed two stage LENZ type vertical axis wind turbine from the experiments conducted in an open environment condition at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai (location 23.2167°N, 72.6833°E) are presented here. Low-wind velocity ranging from 2 to 11 m/s is available everywhere irrespective of climatic seasons and this data provides the support to the researchers using numerical tool to validate and develop an enhanced Lenz type design. Raw data obtained during the measurements are processed and presented in the form so as to compare with other typical outputs. The data is measured at different wind speeds prevalent in the open field condition ranging from 3 m/s to 9 m/s.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Thioredoxin domain containing protein 5 (TXNDC5) is a member of the thioredoxin (Trx) domain-containing family of proteins that have been implicated in cancer progression. The expression of TXNDC5 in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) tumours compared to patient-matched normal lung tissue was determined and cell line models were used to determine if expression was regulated by hypoxia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Samples of tumour and normal lung tissue were taken during surgery and immediately frozen. The expression of TXNDC5 was determined by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. To analyse the effect of hypoxia on TXNDC5 expression NSCLC cell lines were used. RESULTS: Tumours from 18/29 (62%) individuals exhibited an increase in TXNDC5 expression compared to normal lung tissue (p<0.05). TXNDC5 expression was not elevated by hypoxia. CONCLUSION: TXNDC5 is up-regulated in the majority of resected human NSCLC. Cell line data indicates that the expression of TXNDC5 in tumour cells is not regulated by hypoxia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ecthyma contagiosum (orf) is caused by an epitheliotropic parapox virus. It is a zoonosis usually transmitted to humans from affected sheep or goat through direct contact or contaminated fomites. METHODS: We report a 36-year-old patient with multiple skin lesions on his left hand, first observed 5 days before admission followed by red streaks on the forearm and an erythema on the upper arm 1 day prior to admission. The patient reported that he was working on a sheep farm. RESULTS: Histopathologic examination showed evidence of a viral infection. Subsequent transmission electron microscopy showed typical parapox virus particles, predominantly in the scaled-off layers of degenerated keratinocytes and monocytes. The results were verified and specified by two newly established polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays and subsequent sequencing of the amplicons: one broadly reacting 'general parapox virus PCR', and one assay which allows--following sequencing--discrimination between individual orf virus strains. CONCLUSION: Despite the multiplicity of the lesions, there was a significant improvement after 2 weeks of treatment. Sequencing showed the uniqueness of this virus compared with previously published strains from other countries.
