RESUMO

In the field of high resolution imaging in astronomy, we experimentally demonstrate the spatial-coherence analysis of a blackbody using an up-conversion interferometer in the photon counting regime. The infrared radiation of the blackbody is converted to a visible one in both arms of the interferometer thanks to the sum-frequency generation processes achieved in Ti-diffused periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides. The coherence analysis is performed through a dedicated imaging stage which mimics a classical telescope array analyzing an astrophysical source. The validity of these measurements is confirmed by the comparison with spatial-coherence analysis through a reference interferometer working at infrared wavelengths.

RESUMO

Single-photon entanglement is a simple form of entanglement that exists between two spatial modes sharing a single photon. Despite its elementary form, it provides a resource as useful as polarization-entangled photons and it can be used for quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping operations. Here, we report the first experiment where single-photon entanglement is purified with a simple linear-optics based protocol. In addition to its conceptual interest, this result might find applications in long distance quantum communication based on quantum repeaters.

RESUMO

Fabrication, characterization and application of periodical ferroelectric domains in ridges and Ti in-diffused ridge waveguides on X- and Y-cut Lithium Niobate (LN) are reported. The ridge waveguides of 3.5 microm height and 9 microm width were fabricated by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching followed by Ti in-diffusion into the ridges only. Appropriate electrodes on their side walls enabled domain inversion restricted to the ridge. The domain structure was investigated by selective chemical etching. Second harmonic generation in a 1.4 cm long ridge waveguide on an X-cut substrate was demonstrated at 1548 nm fundamental wavelength with an efficiency of 17% W(-1).

RESUMO

We report the realization of a new polarization entangled photon-pair source based on a titanium-indiffused waveguide integrated on periodically poled lithium niobate pumped by a CW laser at 655 nm. The paired photons are emitted at the telecom wavelength of 1310 nm within a bandwidth of 0.7 nm. The quantum properties of the pairs are measured using a two-photon coalescence experiment showing a visibility of 85%. The evaluated source brightness, on the order of 10(5) pairs s(-1)GHz(-1)mW(-1), associated with its compactness and reliability, demonstrates the source's high potential for long-distance quantum communication.

RESUMO

LN photonic wires of cross-section dimensions down to 1 x 0.73 microm2 were fabricated by Ar milling of a single-crystalline LiNbO3 (LN) film bonded to a SiO2/LiNbO3 substrate. Mode intensity distributions, propagation losses, and group indices of refraction were measured at 1.55 microm wavelength and compared with simulation results. Moreover, effective mode indices and end face reflectivities were numerically evaluated. The waveguide of 1 microm top width is the smallest LN photonic wire reported to date; it has a mode size of approximately 0.4 microm2 (0.5 microm2) only and propagation losses of 9.9 dB/cm (12.9 dB/cm) for qTM (qTE) polarization.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate the possibility of retrieving the spatial coherence of an infrared source by using an up-conversion interferometer. Sum-frequency generation in Ti-diffused periodically poled lithium-niobate waveguides in both arms of the interferometer is used to convert the infrared into the visible domain. The fringe contrast of the interference pattern in the visible domain permits us to resolve the spatial separation of two uncorrelated pointlike infrared sources, which simulate a binary star. The validity of these measurements is confirmed through a simultaneous comparison with a reference interferometer working in the infrared domain.

RESUMO

High-visibility interference of photon echoes generated in spatially separated solid-state atomic ensembles is demonstrated. The solid-state ensembles were LiNbO(3) waveguides doped with erbium ions absorbing at 1.53 microm. Bright coherent states of light in several temporal modes (up to 3) are stored and retrieved from the optical memories using two-pulse photon echoes. The stored and retrieved optical pulses, when combined at a beam splitter, show almost perfect interference, which demonstrates both phase preserving storage and indistinguishability of photon echoes from separate optical memories. By measuring interference fringes for different storage times, we also show explicitly that the visibility is not limited by atomic decoherence. These results are relevant for novel quantum-repeater architectures with photon-echo based multimode quantum memories.

RESUMO

We investigated the preservation of information encoded into the relative phase and amplitudes of optical pulses during storage and retrieval in an optical memory based on stimulated photon echo. By interfering photon echoes produced in a single-mode Ti:Er:LiNbO(3) waveguide, we found that decoherence in the medium translates only as loss and not as degradation of information. We measured a visibility for interfering echoes close to 100%. These results may have important implications for future long-distance quantum communication protocols.

RESUMO

We demonstrate phase-insensitive, ultrafast, all-optical spatial switching and frequency conversion in quadratically nonlinear waveguide arrays in periodically poled lithium niobate. Routing of milliwatt signals with wavelengths in the communication band (1550 nm) is achieved without pulse distortions by parametric interaction with a control beam with 10-W power and wavelengths near 775 nm.

RESUMO

Discrete solitons with two frequency components mutually locked by a quadratic nonlinearity have been observed for the first time. Optical experiments have been performed in arrays of coupled channel waveguides with tunable cascaded quadratic nonlinearity. The tunability was the prerequisite that soliton species with different topology could be identified in the same array. Moreover, soliton stability has been experimentally probed. Good agreement with theoretical predictions was found.

RESUMO

The properties of one-dimensional quadratic walking solitons were investigated in planar lithium niobate waveguides near the type I phase-matching condition for second-harmonic generation. Wave propagation was studied under different conditions of phase matching, walk-off angle, and incident fundamental power.

RESUMO

Mid-infrared radiation near 2.8 mum was generated by difference-frequency generation in an 80-mm-long periodically poled Ti:LiNbO(3) channel waveguide by pump radiation near 1.55 mum (tunable external-cavity laser) and a signal radiation of 3.391 mum (HeNe laser). We obtained a normalized conversion efficiency of 105% W(-1) , which is to our knowledge the highest value ever reported.

RESUMO

For the first time to the authors' knowledge, an integrated optical distributed Bragg reflector laser with a fixed photorefractive grating in LiNbO(3) is demonstrated. Sample preparation, grating fabrication, and laser characteristics are reported. The device is pumped by a fiber pigtailed laser diode (lambda(p) approximately 1480 nm) through the Bragg grating in a double-pass configuration, yielding an emission in the backward direction at lambda=1531.7 nm . The laser threshold is 40 mW; as much as 5 mW of output power has been obtained at 110 mW of launched pump power in cw operation.

RESUMO

We report on intensity-dependent switching in lithium niobate directional couplers. Large nonlinear phase shifts that are due to cascading detune the coupling between the coupler branches, which makes all-optical switching possible. Depending on the input intensity, the output could be switched between the cross and the bar coupler branches with a switching ratio of 1:5 and a throughput of 80%.

RESUMO

Active mode locking of an Er-diffusion-doped Ti:LiNbO(3) waveguide laser by intracavity phase modulation to as high as the fourth harmonic (5.12 GHz) of the axial-mode frequency spacing is reported. The diode-pumped, pigtailed, and fully packaged laser with a monolithically integrated intracavity phase modulator has a threshold of 9 mW (incident pump power E(p) || c) and emits transform-limited pulses of >/=3.8-ps width and

RESUMO

We report on interferometric measurements of nonlinear phase shifts of the fundamental mode that are due to cascading in a second-harmonic-generation experiment in lithium niobate channel waveguides. With temperature tuning of the wave-vector mismatch the nonlinear phase shifts were adjustable in sign and magnitude. Varying the wave-vector matching condition along the waveguide leads to large phase shifts with low depletion and dispersion of the fundamental.
