Long-term changes in caregiver burden should be clarified considering that extended post-stroke disability can increase caregiver stress. We assessed long-term changes in caregiver burden severity and its predictors. This study was a retrospective analysis of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation. Patients with an acute first-ever stroke were enrolled from August 2012 to May 2015. Data were collected at 6 months and 6 years after stroke onset. The caregiver burden was measured with a subjective caregiver burden questionnaire based on the Korean version of the Caregiver Burden Inventory. The caregivers' characteristics and patients' clinical and functional status were also examined at each follow-up. A high caregiver burden, which suggests a risk of burnout, was reported by 37.9% and 51.7% of caregivers at 6 months and 6 years post-stroke, respectively. Both the caregiver burden total score and proportion of caregivers at risk of burnout did not decrease between 6 months and 6 years. The patients' disability (OR = 11.60; 95% CI 1.58-85.08; p = 0.016), caregivers' self-rated stress (OR = 0.03; 95% CI 0.00-0.47; p = 0.013), and caregivers' quality of life (OR = 0.76; 95% CI 0.59-0.99; p = 0.042) were burden predictors at 6 months. At 6 years, only the patients' disability (OR = 5.88; 95% CI 2.19-15.82; p < 0.001) and caregivers' psychosocial stress (OR = 1.26; 95% CI 1.10-1.44; p = 0.001) showed significance. Nearly half of the caregivers were at risk of burnout, which lasted for 6 years after stroke onset. The patients' disability and caregivers' stress were burden predictors in both subacute and chronic phases of stroke. The findings suggest that consistent interventions, such as emotional support or counseling on stress relief strategies for caregivers of stroke survivors, may reduce caregiver burden. Further research is needed to establish specific strategies appropriate for Korean caregivers to alleviate their burden in caring for stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Information on the long-term prognosis in patients with isolated thalamic stroke is sparse. We report the functional outcomes of patients with thalamic stroke up to 24 months from the KOSCO (Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation) study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Isolated thalamic stroke was defined as the presence of lesions solely in the thalamus, excluding cases with lesions in other brain parenchyma areas apart from the thalamus, as identified by brain magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography scans. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment, the Functional Ambulatory Category, the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association National Outcome Measurement System Swallowing Scale, and the short version of the Korean Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test were used to assess physical impairment. The Functional Independence Measure and modified Rankin Scale were used to assess functional outcomes. All measurements were conducted up to 24 months poststroke. A total of 297 patients were included, consisting of 235 with ischemic and 62 with hemorrhagic stroke. Except for the Functional Ambulatory Category and Functional Independence Measure, all physical impairments showed significant improvement up to 3 months poststroke (P<0.001) and reached a plateau. The Functional Ambulatory Category and Functional Independence Measure scores continued to improve up to 12 months poststroke (P<0.05) and reached a plateau. At 7 days poststroke, 47.5% of patients had no disability (modified Rankin Scale score<2), whereas at 24 months poststroke, 76.4% of patients had no significant disability. CONCLUSIONS: Patients showed rapid recovery from physical impairment up to 3 months poststroke, with additional improvements in ambulatory function and independence observed up to 12 months poststroke. Additionally, relatively favorable long-term functional prognosis at 24 months after onset was demonstrated. These results could provide insights into the proper management regarding functional outcomes of patients with isolated thalamic stroke.

Importance: The United States (US) Medicare claims files are valuable sources of national healthcare utilization data with over 45 million beneficiaries each year. Due to their massive sizes and costs involved in obtaining the data, a method of randomly drawing a representative sample for retrospective cohort studies with multi-year follow-up is not well-documented. Objective: To present a method to construct longitudinal patient samples from Medicare claims files that are representative of Medicare populations each year. Design: Retrospective cohort and cross-sectional designs. Participants: US Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes over a 10-year period. Methods: Medicare Master Beneficiary Summary Files were used to identify eligible patients for each year in over a 10-year period. We targeted a sample of ~900,000 patients per year. The first year's sample is stratified by county and race/ethnicity (white vs. minority), and targeted at least 250 patients in each stratum with the remaining sample allocated proportional to county population size with oversampling of minorities. Patients who were alive, did not move between counties, and stayed enrolled in Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) were retained in the sample for subsequent years. Non-retained patients (those who died or were dropped from Medicare) were replaced with a sample of patients in their first year of Medicare FFS eligibility or patients who moved into a sampled county during the previous year. Results: The resulting sample contains an average of 899,266 ± 408 patients each year over the 10-year study period and closely matches population demographics and chronic conditions. For all years in the sample, the weighted average sample age and the population average age differ by <0.01 years; the proportion white is within 0.01%; and the proportion female is within 0.08%. Rates of 21 comorbidities estimated from the samples for all 10 years were within 0.12% of the population rates. Longitudinal cohorts based on samples also closely resembled the cohorts based on populations remaining after 5- and 10-year follow-up. Conclusions and relevance: This sampling strategy can be easily adapted to other projects that require random samples of Medicare beneficiaries or other national claims files for longitudinal follow-up with possible oversampling of sub-populations.

Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) is a highly contagious viral infection that affects various fish species and poses a significant threat to the global aquaculture industry. Thus, accurate and timely diagnosis is paramount for sustainable management of fish health. This study rigorously evaluated the diagnostic efficacy of various polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, focusing on those recommended by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and the assays newly proposed by WOAH's Aquatic Animals Health Standards Commission. Specifically, this study assessed conventional PCR, nested PCR, modified 1-F/1-R, and real-time PCR assays using a 95% limit of detection (LoD95%), as well as diagnostic sensitivity (DSe) and specificity (DSp) tests across different RSIV severity grades (G0-G4). In previous studies, the LoD95% for the 1-F/1-R and 4-F/4-R conventional assays were 225.81 and 328.7 copies/reaction, respectively. The modified 1-F/1-R exhibited a lower LoD95% of 51.32 copies/reaction. Notably, the nested PCR had an LoD95% of 11.23 copies/reaction, and the real-time PCR assay had an LoD95% of 12.02 copies/reaction. The DSe varied across RSIV severity grades, especially in the lower G0-G2 grades. The nested PCR and modified 1-F/1-R assays displayed the highest DSe, making them particularly useful for early-stage screening and detection of asymptomatic carriers. In addition, the PCR assays did not cross-react with any other aquatic pathogens except RSIV. Our findings significantly advanced the diagnostic capabilities of RSIVD by suggesting that nested PCR and modified 1-F/1-R assays are particularly promising for early detection. We propose their inclusion in future WOAH guidelines for a more comprehensive diagnostic framework.

AIM: We compared three different intensities of robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) for achieving favourable outcomes in children with cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD: This study was conducted using a randomized controlled, single-blind design. Thirty children (19 males and 11 females; mean age 6 years 1 month, SD 2 years) with CP classified in Gross Motor Function Classification System levels II and III were assigned to three different RAGT intensity groups: high-intensity (fastest walking speed and lowest body weight support [BWS]), low-intensity (slowest speed and highest BWS), and comfortable intensity (intermediate speed and intermediate BWS). The RAGT intervention was performed three times a week for 6 weeks. Outcome measures included the 88-item Gross Motor Function Measure, stability index, spatiotemporal parameters of gait analysis, paediatric functional independence measure, and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. RESULTS: The 88-item Gross Motor Function Measure was significantly improved after training in the high-intensity (D Δ8.3 ± 15.6; E Δ3.8 ± 4.1) and comfortable intensity (D Δ2.9 ± 3.1; E Δ1.2 ± 2.0) groups, whereas gait speed was improved in the comfortable intensity group, without statistically significant group differences. Only the low-intensity group showed improvement on the stability index (Δ -0.6 ± 0.9, p = 0.05). Everyday functional performance significantly improved in all three groups, with the comfortable intensity group showing the greatest improvement. INTERPRETATION: Different training intensities produced improvement in different areas; individualized RAGT intensity adjustment is therefore needed based on the rehabilitation goal.

The intent of this study is to examine treatment impact and efficiency observed when cognitive behavioral treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are delivered in-person or using telehealth. This study pooled data from 268 veterans enrolled in two PTSD clinical trials. In both trials, treatment was delivered using in-home telehealth (telehealth arm), in-home in-person (in-home arm), and in-office care, where patients traveled to the Department of Veterans Affairs for either office-based telehealth or office-based in-person care (office arm). Average age was 44 (SD = 12.57); 80.9% were males. The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) was used to assess symptom severity. Treatment impact was measured by (a) the proportion of participants who completed at least eight treatment sessions and (b) the proportion with a reliable change of ≥ 10 points on the PCL-5. Treatment efficiency was measured by the number of days required to reach the end point. The proportion of participants who attended at least eight sessions and achieved reliable change on the PCL-5 differed across treatment formats (ps < .05). Participants in the in-home (75.4%) format were most likely to attend at least eight treatment sessions, followed by those in the telehealth (58.3%) and office (44.0%) formats, the latter of which required patients to travel. Participants in the in-home (68.3%, p < .001) format were also more likely to achieve reliable change, followed by those in the telehealth (50.9%) and office (44.2%) formats. There were no significant differences in the amount of time to complete at least eight sessions. Delivery of therapy in-home results in a significantly greater likelihood of achieving both an adequate dose of therapy and a reliable decrease in PTSD symptoms compared to telehealth and office formats. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to demonstrate the incidence of altered level of consciousness after hemorrhagic stroke and identify factors associated with altered level of consciousness at 3 mos after stroke. DESIGN: This study used data from a prospective multicenter cohort study conducted in nine hospitals in Korea and included 1677 patients with first-ever hemorrhagic stroke. Patients were dichotomized into those with and without altered level of consciousness at 3 mos after stroke. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with subacute to chronic stage altered level of consciousness. RESULTS: Among patients with hemorrhagic stroke (age: 20-99 yrs, female 50.21%), the prevalence of altered level of consciousness at admission was 38.58% (25.4% [drowsy], 6.38% [stupor], and 6.8% [coma]) and 17.29% 3 mos after stroke. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that independent factors associated with altered level of consciousness at 3 mos after stroke included late seizure (odds ratio [95% confidence interval], 5.93 [1.78-20.00]), stroke progression (3.84 [1.48-9.64]), craniectomy (2.19 [1.19-4.00]), history of complications (1.74 [1.18-2.55]), age at stroke onset (1.08 [1.07-1.10]), and initial Glasgow Coma Scale score category (0.36 [0.30-0.44]). CONCLUSIONS: The factors associated with altered level of consciousness at 3 mos after stroke should be considered when explaining long-term consciousness status and focused management of modifiable factors in acute care hospitals could help ameliorate altered level of consciousness and promote recovery after stroke.

Surgical techniques are gaining attention for treating physical diseases in aquaculture and aquarium fish. Sturgeon is a suitable species for surgical experiments due to its industrial significance. Maintaining homeostasis is crucial during surgical procedures, and the liver plays a major role in immune regulation. High temperature is suggested to improve physiological activity and wound healing. This study investigated differences in hepatectomy sturgeons' tolerance and histopathological responses of internal organs. Moreover, this study investigated the effects of high temperatures on wound healing and hematopoietic recovery in fish undergoing surgical procedures. The liver condition was found to play a pivotal role in the analysis, and cortisol levels were affected by anesthesia. The results showed that high temperature facilitated hematopoietic recovery and wound healing, but excessive induction of physiological activity caused damage. Managing high temperatures and liver conditions induced a remarkable improvement in wound healing. However, anesthesia itself can be a significant stressor for fish, and wound healing requires a greater amount of energy. Further research is needed to understand the stress factors caused by surgical procedures and anesthesia and to promote animal welfare in fishery products.

PURPOSE: Adolescent self-harm is a public health problem. Research suggests a link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and self-destructive behaviors. Few studies, however, have examined the effects of ACEs on self-harm among Asian adolescents. This study explored the association between lifetime ACEs and a history of self-harm among Korean children and adolescents in elementary, middle, and high schools. METHODS: A cross-sectional, retrospective medical record review was conducted on a dataset of a national psychiatrist advisory service for school counselors who participated in the Wee Doctor Service from January 1 to December 31, 2020. The data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression to predict self-harm. RESULTS: Student cases (n=171) were referred to psychiatrists by school counselors for remote consultation. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that the odds of self-harm were higher among high school students (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=4.97; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.94-12.76), those with two or more ACEs (aOR=3.27; 95% CI=1.43-7.47), and those with depression (aOR=3.06; 95% CI=1.32-7.10). CONCLUSION: The study's findings provide compelling evidence that exposure to ACEs can increase vulnerability to self-harm among Korean students. Students with a history of ACEs and depression, as well as high school students, require increased attention during counseling. School counselors can benefit from incorporating screening assessment tools that include questions related to ACEs and depression. Establishing a systematic referral system to connect students with experts can enhance the likelihood of identifying self-harm tendencies and offering the essential support to prevent self-harm.

Aquaculture, a crucial sector of the global food industry, faces a myriad of issues due to parasitic invasions. One such parasite, Microcotyle sebastis, which afflicts Korean rockfish in South Korea, has a significant economic impact. The impending danger of resistance to traditional anthelmintics necessitates the exploration of new antiparasitic candidates. Although the efficacy of salinomycin against aquatic parasites such as ciliates and sporozoans is known, its influence on monogeneans has yet to be studied. Therefore, this study investigated the efficacy and safety of salinomycin for the treatment of M. sebastis infections, presenting the first exploration of salinomycin's therapeutic potential against monogeneans. In vitro examinations revealed a minimum effective concentration of salinomycin of 5 mg/kg, which led to necrosis of the haptor upon dislodging from the gill filaments. The one-time oral administration of the drug at concentrations of 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg showed a significant dose-dependent reduction in parasite counts, with no apparent behavioral side effects in Korean rockfish. Biochemical analyses monitored the liver, heart, and kidney enzymes, specifically aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB). At both 20 °C and 13 °C, no significant differences were observed in the levels of AST and ALT. However, at 20 °C, alterations in BUN levels were evident on Day 14, a deviation not observed at 13 °C. The CK-MB analysis revealed elevated enzyme levels at both temperatures when compared to the control group, reflecting the similar changes observed in terrestrial animals administered salinomycin. The biochemical data suggest that the oral administration of salinomycin is potentially more favorable at 13 °C than at 20 °C. Although our findings warrant further comprehensive studies, including on the long-term and potential effects on nontarget species and water quality, they also suggest that salinomycin could be considered as an alternative or adjunctive treatment if resistance to the currently used praziquantel against M. sebastis is confirmed.

This study detected two potential pathogens, Vibro parahaemolyticus, which causes acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), in fishing bait in South Korea. However, their infectious nature was not confirmed, possibly due to the degradation caused by freezing/thawing or prolonged storage under frozen conditions. While infectivity was not confirmed in this study, there is still a significant risk of exposure to these aquatic products. Furthermore, fishing bait and feed should be handled with caution as they are directly exposed to water, increasing the risk of disease transmission. In Australia, cases of WSSV infection caused by imported shrimp intended for human consumption have occurred, highlighting the need for preventive measures. While freezing/thawing is a method for inactivating pathogens, there are still regulatory and realistic issues to be addressed.

Parasitic infections pose significant challenges in aquaculture, and the increasing resistance to conventional anthelmintics necessitates the exploration of alternative treatments. Levamisole hydrochloride (HCl) has demonstrated efficacy against monogenean infections in various fish species; however, research focused on Microcotyle sebastis infections in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of levamisole HCl against M. sebastis infections in Korean rockfish with the goal of optimizing anthelmintic usage in aquaculture. In this study, we first assessed the susceptibility of M. sebastis to levamisole HCl in vitro. Subsequently, in vivo evaluations were conducted to assess the drug's efficacy, safety, and to identify optimal administration methods. In vitro experiments revealed concentration-dependent sensitivity of M. sebastis to levamisole HCl, with a minimum effective concentration (MEC) of 100 mg/L. In vivo experiments employed oral administration, intraperitoneal injection, and immersion treatments based on the MEC. Oral administration proved to be a safe method, yielding efficacy rates of 27.3% and 41.6% for 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg doses, respectively, in contrast to the immersion and injection methods, which induced symptoms of abnormal swimming, vomiting, and death. Biochemical analyses conducted to assess the safety of levamisole HCl revealed a transient, statistically significant elevation in the levels of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) on day three post-administration at 20 °C. Following this, no substantial differences were observed. However, at 13 °C, the enzyme levels remained relatively consistent, emphasizing the role of water temperature conditions in influencing the action of levamisole HCl. Our research findings substantiate the efficacy of levamisole HCl against M. sebastis in Korean rockfish, underscoring its potential for safe oral administration. These results provide valuable insights for developing parasite control strategies involving levamisole HCl in Korean rockfish populations while minimizing adverse impacts on fish health and the environment. However, this study bears limitations due to its controlled setting and narrow focus. Future research should expand on these findings by testing levamisole HCl in diverse environments, exploring different administration protocols, and examining wider temperature ranges.

Introduction: The incidence of stroke is increasing steadily due to factors such as population aging. Approximately 80% of stroke survivors have motor disorders affecting their daily lives. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been reported to maximize functional recovery after stroke along with exercise intervention in upper limb rehabilitation treatment. However, whether rTMS affects the recovery of upper limb function in patients with stroke remains unclear. Therefore, in this trial, we will investigate the efficacy of low-frequency rTMS in patients with subcortical and brainstem ischemic stroke. Methods: This study has been designed as a multi-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy of low-frequency rTMS over the contralesional M1 with sham stimulation. Overall, 88 participants will be allocated to the intervention or control group in a 1:1 ratio, with stratification according to their initial upper extremity Fugl-Meyer assessment (UE-FMA) score. The participants will receive either 30 min of real rTMS (intervention group) or sham rTMS (control group), followed by 30 min of occupational therapy for 10 consecutive workdays. All the participants will receive the same amount of rehabilitation therapy throughout the intervention period. Evaluations will be performed at baseline (T0), at the end of treatment (T1), and 4 weeks after the end of treatment (T2), including the box and block test (BBT), UE-FMA, Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index, and NIH Stroke Scale scores, Finger tapping test, Brunnstrom stage, modified Ashworth scale, and grip strength. The primary outcome will be the change in the BBT score between T0 and T2. Conclusion: This study will provide evidence on the efficacy of low-frequency rTMS in motor function recovery of the upper limb in patients with subacute, subcortical, and brainstem ischemic stroke. In recent years, studies have highlighted the significant impact of probiotic treatment on the central nervous system (brain) and stress regulation through the microbiota-gut-brain axis, yet there have been limited knowledge on this axis in fish. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance the current understanding of the mechanisms underlying probiotic effects on neurotransmission and stress alleviation in fish through transcriptomic profiling. In this study, olive flounders (Paralichthys olivaceus) were subjected to two trial setups: a 1-month lab-scale trial and a 6-month field-scale trial, with and without the probiotic strain Lactococcus lactis WFLU12. RNA-Seq analysis was performed using liver samples collected from fish at one-month post-feeding (mpf) in both trials. Additionally, fish growth was monitored monthly, and serological parameters were measured at one mpf in the field-scale experiment. The results of the lab-scale trial showed that probiotic administration significantly upregulated genes related to neurotransmission, such as htr3a, mao, ddc, ntsr1, and gfra2. These findings highlight the impact of probiotics on modulating neurotransmission via the microbiota-gut-brain axis. In the field-scale experiment, fish growth was significantly promoted and the sera levels of AST, LDH, and cortisol were significantly higher in the control group compared to the probiotics group. Furthermore, genes involved in stress responses (e.g. hsp70, hsp90B1, hspE1, prdx1, and gss) and transcriptional regulators (e.g. fos, dusp1, and dusp2) exhibited significant upregulation in the control group compared to the probiotics group, indicating that probiotic administration can alleviate stress levels in fish. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of probiotics in fish, specifically regarding their impact on neurotransmission and stress alleviation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting the long-term quality of life of patients with mild stroke and evaluate the differences according to age and sex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Korean Stroke Cohort for functioning and rehabilitation data was used, and patients with mild stroke with a National Institute of Health Stroke Scale score of < 5 were included. Quality of life after 6 months was analyzed using EuroQol-5 dimensions. Demographic and clinical characteristics were evaluated, and factors affecting the quality of life at 6 months were analyzed. RESULTS: Age, current drinking, marital status, length of stay, and modified Rankin Scale, Fugl-Meyer assessment, Functional Independence Measure, and Geriatric Depression Scale scores affected the quality of life at 6 months in patients with mild stroke. Fugl-Meyer assessment score was a predictor for those aged < 65 years, while the functional ambulatory category was a predictor for those aged ≥ 65 years. Predictors of quality of life, excluding alcohol consumption, were comparable between male and female. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients aged <65 years, individuals who consumed alcohol, and those who showed better motor function and fewer comorbidities had a higher quality of life. Among patients aged ≥65 years, quality of life was higher in males, younger age, married individuals, those with diabetes, and those with a better walking ability. Among male, individuals who consumed alcohol had a higher quality of life. Rehabilitation treatment should prioritize improving modifiable factors to enhance the quality of life in patients with mild stroke.

In this study, the starry flounder L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM) sequence was obtained using next-generation sequencing, and the integrity of the sequence was verified by cloning and sequencing. First, the amino acid sequence was predicted using the cDNA sequence, and the gene was then identified through multiple sequence alignment analysis with related sequences and phylogenetic analysis. Thus, homogeneity was confirmed. The expression level of PsL1CAM (Platichthys stellatus L1CAM) mRNA in healthy starry flounder was detected in all tissues used in the experiment, and tissue- and gene-specific expression levels were confirmed. In addition, as a result of mRNA expression analysis after artificial infection with viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) and Streptococcus parauberis PH0710, significant expression changes and characteristics were confirmed following infection with VHSV and S. parauberis PH0710. After artificial infection with VHSV, the expression level of PsL1CAM mRNA was significantly upregulated in almost all major tissues of the starry flounder, whereas it was significantly downregulated in mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues, such as the gills and intestine. Infection with S. parauberis PH0710 significantly upregulated the expression of PsL1CAM mRNA in almost all major tissues of the starry flounder, whereas it was significantly downregulated in the heart after infection. Our results indicate that PsL1CAM may be involved in the host immune response to starry flounders.

Infestations of parasites, particularly those caused by copepods and monogeneans, are a major hindrance to aquaculture and have a big negative economic impact. Sebastes schlegelii, a farmed Korean rockfish, is particularly prone to copepods and monogeneans. This study comprehended how parasitic copepods and rockfish from a farm in Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, are related to the monogenean trematode Microcotyle sebastis. Our research revealed that monogeneans predominated, with a rate of 98.4% and an average infection intensity of 7 per infected fish. With an average infection intensity of 4 per sick fish, the infection rate for parasitic copepods was equally considerable, coming in at 91.7%. The high co-infection rate of both parasite families, at 90.8%, is noteworthy. Furthermore, Lepeophtheirus elegans and Peniculus truncatus, 2 parasitic copepod species, were discovered to have M. sebastis eggs attached to their bodies. This demonstrates a connection between parasitic copepod infestations in farmed Korean rockfish and the monogenean trematode M. sebastis. These discoveries highlight the necessity for creating more potent parasite control methods for the aquaculture sector and shed light on the intricate relationships between various parasite species.

Background and Objectives: Metabolic syndrome is a growing health concern globally, and its prevalence continues to increase. This study investigated whether a marine healing program could improve metabolic syndrome indicators and mental health in adults with a metabolic syndrome and those at risk of developing it. Materials and Methods: This study enrolled 30 participants who were assigned to either the experimental or control groups. The duration of the study was set at 4 weeks. Both groups received metabolic syndrome management education, and the experimental group additionally participated in two marine healing programs. Anthropometric indicators, biochemical indicators, and mental health indicators were collected before and after the intervention. Results: The findings indicate that the experimental group had significantly lower systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, and body weight, as well as higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) and uric acid. Mental health indicators (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and quality of life measures) additionally showed improvement. Pre-post comparisons between the experimental group and the control group showed that the experimental group had significantly decreased by 1.05 kg in body weight, whereas the control group increased by 0.29 kg in body weight. In addition, HDL-C decreased by 0.91 mg/dL in the control group and increased by 3.7 mg/dL in the experimental group. Conclusions: Overall, these results suggest that marine healing programs could improve metabolic syndrome indicators such as body weight and HDL-C better than the control treatment.

Background: Although there is strong evidence that behavioral counseling improves quit rates, limited data are available on individualized smoking cessation counseling provided to female smokers because they often are hesitant to identify as smokers. This study aimed to elucidate factors related to smoking cessation among Korean women who participated in the smoking cessation outreach program. Methods: This retrospective descriptive study used data retrieved from the Korea Health Promotion Institute. The data included individual participant characteristics, supportive services received, and self-reported smoking cessation outcomes from June 1, 2015, to December 31, 2017. Results: Data from 709 women were analyzed. We found cessation rates of 43.3% (confidence interval [CI]=0.40, 0.47) at four weeks, 28.6% (CI=0.25, 0.32) at 12 weeks, and 21.6% (CI=0.19, 0.25) at six months. Significant determinants of quitting at six months were regular exercise (odds ratio [OR]=3.02; 95% CI=1.28, 3.29; P=0.009) and the number of counseling sessions during the first four weeks of the program (OR=1.26; 95% CI=1.04, 1.82; P=0.041). Conclusion: Providing intensive counseling during initial phase of smoking cessation program and regular exercise would be effective strategies for smoking cessation programs for women smokers to promote their health.

Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) causes significant economic losses in aquaculture. Here, we analyzed the pathogenicity, viral shedding, and transmission dynamics of RSIV in rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) by employing immersion infection and cohabitation challenge models. Rock bream challenged by immersion exposure exhibited 100% mortality within 35 days post RSIV exposure, indicating that the viral shedding in seawater peaked after mortality. At 25 °C, a positive correlation between the viral loads within infected rock bream and virus shedding into the seawater was observed. Specific RSIV lesions were observed in the spleen and kidney of the infected rock bream, and the viral load in the spleen had the highest correlation with the histopathological grade. A cohabitation challenge mimicking the natural transmission conditions was performed to assess the virus transmission and determine the pathogenicity and viral load. The RSIV-infected rock breams (donors) were cohabited with uninfected rock bream, red sea bream (Pagrus major), and flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) (recipients) at both 25 °C and 15 °C. In the cohabitation challenge group maintained at 15 °C, no mortality was observed across all experimental groups. However, RSIV was detected in both seawater and the recipient fish. Our results provide preliminary data for further epidemiological analyses and aid in the development of preventive measures and management of RSIVD in aquaculture.
