RESUMO

Three stable microbial consortia, each composed of Bacillus paranthracis and Staphylococcus haemolyticus strains, were isolated from milk of cows diagnosed with mastitis in three geographically remote regions of Russia. The composition of these consortia remained stable following multiple passages on culture media. Apparently, this stability is due to the structure of the microbial biofilms formed by the communities. The virulence of the consortia depended on the B. paranthracis strains. It seems plausible that the ability of the consortia to cause mastitis in cattle was affected by mutations of the cytK gene of B. paranthracis.

RESUMO

When developing neutralization systems for harmful agents, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms of the formation and evolution of an aerosol cloud in a closed or open space. Effective decontamination with aerosol clouds is provided by a rather high particle concentration and dispersion in an open space or on contaminated surfaces. This paper considers neutralization systems based on pulsed powder aerosol generators. It is shown that an aerosol cloud consisting of micron- and submicron-sized particles appears for several seconds after spraying. A further evolution of the aerosol cloud in a room is associated with the gravitational settling, diffusion, and coagulation of particles and their settling on the walls and ceiling. In the case of an open space or a ventilation system in a room, the evolution of the aerosol cloud is affected by the airflow. The main purpose of this paper is to determine the most important parameters and critical conditions of pulsed aerosol generation. A mathematical model is, thus, proposed for pulsed aerosol generation, and its parametric study is conducted in the most typical conditions. The purpose performance predicted by the model is the mass concentration of aerosol particles in the air and on surfaces, depending on the time of particle spraying and dispersion.

RESUMO

Strains of the genus Delftia are poorly studied microorganisms. In this work, the complete genome of the naphthalene-degrading Delftia tsuruhatensis strain ULwDis3 isolated from seawater of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea was assembled. For the first time, genes encoding naphthalene cleavage pathways via salicylate and gentisate were identified in a strain of the genus Delftia. The genes are part of one operon (nag genes). Three open reading frames (ORFs) were found in the genome of D. tsuruhatensis strain ULwDis3 that encode gentisate 1.2-dioxygenase. One of the ORFs is part of the nag operon. The physiological and biochemical characteristics of the strain ULwDis3 when cultured in mineral medium with naphthalene as the sole source of carbon and energy were also studied. It was found that after 22 h of growth, the strain stopped consuming naphthalene, and at the same time, naphthalene 1.2-dioxygenase and salicylate 5-hydroxylase activities were not detected. Later, a decrease in the number of living cells and the death of the culture were observed. Gentisate 1.2-dioxygenase activity was detected from the time of gentisate formation until culture death.

RESUMO

The phase composition, microstructure, and multiple shape memory effect of TiNi50-xVx alloys were studied in this work. The phase composition of the TiNi50-xVx system is the TiNi matrix, spherical particles of TiNiV, the secondary phase Ti2Ni(V). Doping of TiNi alloys with vanadium atoms leads to an increase in the stability of high-temperature B2 and rhombohedral R-phases. An increase in the atomic volume with an increase in the concentration of the alloying element V from 1 to 4 at.% was established. Vanadium doping of the Ti-Ni-V system alloys leads to an increase in the temperature interval for the manifestation of the multiple shape memory effect. It has been established that the value of the reversible deformation of the multiple shape memory effect both during heating and during cooling increases linearly from 2 to 4% with an increase in the vanadium concentration.

RESUMO

The manuscript describes the phase composition, microstructure, some physical and mechanical properties of the Ti-Al system with addition of 2 at. % Dy (TAD) and Ho (TAH) obtained by "hydride technology". Phase diagrams for Ti-Al-Dy and Ti-Al-Ho at a temperature of 1150 °C and basic properties for ternary phases Dy6Ti4Al43 and Ho6Ti4Al43 were calculated. A crystallographic database of stable and quasistable structures of the known elemental composition was created in the USPEX-SIESTA software by means of an evolutionary code. The calculations show that adding REM leads to a significant stabilizing effect in each Ti-Al-Me (Me = Dy, Ho) system without exception. It has been established that the lattice energies of AlTi3Ho and AlTi3Dy are, respectively, equal to: EAl4Ti12Dy3 = -32,877.825 eV and EAl4Ti12Dy3 = -31,227.561 eV. In the synthesized Ti49Al49Ho2 compound, the main phases include Al-Ti, Al3Ti3 and Al4Ti12Ho3 and the contributions to the theoretical intensity are equal to 44.83, 44.43 and 5.55%, respectively. Ti49Al49Dy2 is dominated by the Al-Ti, Al3Ti3 and Al4Ti12Dy phases, whose contributions are equal to 65.04, 16.88 and 11.2%, respectively. The microhardness of TAD and TAN specimens is 1.61 ± 0.08 and 1.47 ± 0.07 GPa, respectively.

RESUMO

A mathematical model of the pulse generation of decontaminating aerosols utilizing the energy of high-energy materials (HEM) is proposed with account for the physical and chemical properties of the atomized substance, HEM characteristics, and gas generator parameters. Such a model is needed to counter the environmental hazards, process emissions, and terrorist attacks with hazardous and dangerous aerosols. Another aspect of the problem is the danger of biological aerosols carrying viral or microbial particles that are spread naturally or induced using biological weapons. In many cases, the mission is not only to neutralize aerosol particles in indoor air and on surfaces but also to do it quickly. In this regard, an attractive option is the pulse method for generating special aerosols aimed at quickly, within a few seconds, creating a cloud of particles that will interact with hazardous aerosol particles and decontaminate them. HEM energy is proposed to be used for the pulse generation of such aerosols. It is important not only to atomize the decontaminating aerosol quickly and evenly in space but also to preserve the useful physical and chemical properties of the particles. To test the regimes and methods of pulse generation, an adequate mathematical model of the process is required, which is proposed in this manuscript.

RESUMO

In this work, composite materials were obtained by spark plasma sintering of an Al12Mg17-B-Si powder mixture. The structure, phase composition, and mechanical properties of the obtained composites were studied. It was found that various compounds based on B12 icosahedrons, such as AlB12, B4Si, and B6Si, are formed during spark plasma sintering. Based on the SEM images and results of XRD analysis of the obtained specimens, a probable scheme for the formation of the phase composition of composite materials during spark plasma sintering was proposed. An increase in the Al12Mg17-B powder content in the initial mixture from 30 to 70 wt% leads to an increase in hardness from 16.55 to 21.24 GPa and a decrease in the friction coefficient and wear rate from 0.56 to 0.32 and 13.60 to 5.60 10-5 mm-3/(N/m), respectively.

RESUMO

In this study, we investigated antibiotic-resistant microorganisms isolated by the direct plating method from 6 playgrounds in the city of Pushchino, Moscow Region, with different types of coating: sand, soil with sand, grass and a modern playground coating made of pressed rubber crumb. According to the results of the study, sand is the cleanest type of coating, both in terms of the total count of cultivated microorganisms (8 × 105/g of substrate) and in terms of the content of resistant strains. The most contaminated both in terms of the total count of cultivated microorganisms (1.2-1.9 × 109/g of substrate) and in terms of the content of antibiotic-resistant strains was the coating of pressed rubber crumb. We isolated 65 antibiotic-resistant strains of fluorescent pseudomonads. Nine Pseudomonas strains were found to contain antibiotic resistance plasmids (one belongs to P-1 incompatibility group, seven to IncP-7 and one to unidentified incompatibility group). For the first time, we discovered a conjugative plasmid pD4A-46 conferring tetracycline resistance and belonging to the P-7 incompatibility group. Taking into account the results obtained under this study, it can be recommended to periodically treat the crumb rubber coating with non-toxic antiseptics, i.e. hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine.

RESUMO

This article dwells upon the additive manufacturing of high-energy materials (HEM) with regards to the problems of this technology's development. This work is aimed at identifying and describing the main problems currently arising in the use of AM for nanostructured high-energy materials and gives an idea of the valuable opportunities that it provides in the hope of promoting further development in this area. Original approaches are proposed for solving one of the main problems in the production of nanostructured HEM-safety and viscosity reduction of the polymer-nanopowder system. Studies have shown an almost complete degree of deagglomeration of microencapsulated aluminum powders. Such powders have the potential to create new systems for safe 3D printing using high-energy materials.

RESUMO

AlMgB14-TiB2 composite materials were fabricated by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) followed by spark plasma sintering of the obtained SHS products. It was found that, during the SHS, the AlMgB14 phase is formed at a donor (Ti + 2B) to acceptor (Al12Mg17-B) mass ratio of 3:7 and 4:6, respectively. The specimen sintered from the SHS powder with the donor:acceptor mass ratio of 5:5 at a temperature of 1470 °C has a uniform skeletal structure. The average hardness of the obtained specimen is 30.1 GPa.

RESUMO

Bovine mastitis is a widespread infectious disease. In addition to the economic damages associated with reduced milk yield due to mastitis, the problem of food contamination by microorganism metabolites, in particular toxins, is also a concern. Horizontal transfer of microorganisms from animal populations to humans can also be complicated by antibiotic resistance. Therefore, bovine mastitis is relevant to the study of microbiology and veterinary medicine. In this study, we investigated the microbiome of milk samples from healthy cows and cows with different forms of mastitis from individual quarters of the udder of cows during first and second lactation. Total DNA was extracted from milk samples. The V3-V4 regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA genes from each sample were amplified to generate a library via high-throughput sequencing. We revealed significant dominance of several operational taxonomic units (OTUs) corresponding mostly to groups of Staphylococcus aureus, Aerococcus spp., and Streptococcus spp. In addition, we unexpectedly identified Streptococcus thermophilus in samples with high SCC quantities. We found some infectious agents that characterized summer mastitis. We demonstrated that in Central Russia, mastitis is associated with a wide variety of causal organisms. We observed some differences in the diversity of the two investigated farms. However, we did not find any significant difference among healthy, mastitis and subclinical samples according to their SCC status from either farms by principal component analysis. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) confirmed the presence of several indicator genera in farms from Moscow and the Tula Region. These results confirm the complex bacterial etiology of bovine mastitis.

RESUMO

Nanosized Al (nAl) powders offer increased reactivity than the conventional micron-sized counterpart, thanks to their reduced size and increased specific surface area. While desirable from the combustion viewpoint, this high reactivity comes at the cost of difficult handling and implementation of the nanosized powders in preparations. The coating with hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is proposed to improve powder handling and ease of use of nAl and to limit its sensitivity to aging. The nAl/HTPB composite can be an intermediate product for the subsequent manufacturing of mixed high-energy materials while maintaining the qualities and advantages of nAl. In this work, experimental studies of the high-energy mixture nAl/HTPB are carried out. The investigated materials include two composites: nAl (90 wt.%) + HTPB (10 wt.%) and nAl (80 wt.%) + HTPB (20 wt.%). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is performed from 30 to 1000 °C at slow heating rate (10 °C/min) in inert (Ar) and oxidizing (air) environment. The combustion characteristics of propellant formulations loaded with conventional and HTPB-coated nAl are analyzed and discussed. Results show the increased burning rate performance of nAl/HTPB-loaded propellants over the counterpart loaded with micron-sized Al.

RESUMO

In this work, Al-Mg intermetallic powders were characterized and obtained by melting, casting into a steel chill and subsequent mechanical activation in a planetary mill. The method for producing Al12Mg17 intermetallic powder is presented. The dispersity, morphology, chemical composition, and phase composition of the obtained powder materials were investigated. Certain thermodynamic properties of high-energy materials containing the Al-Mg powder after mechanical activation of various durations were investigated. The addition of the Al-Mg powders to the high-energy composition (synthetic rubber SKDM-80 + ammonium perchlorate AP + boron B) can significantly increase the burning rate by approximately 47% and the combustion heat by approximately 23% compared with the high-energy compositions without the Al-Mg powder. The addition of the Al12Mg17 powder obtained after 6 h of mechanical activation provides an increase in the burning rate by 8% (2.5 ± 0.1 mm/s for the mechanically activated Al12Mg17 powder and 2.3 ± 0.1 mm/s for the commercially available powder) and an increase in the combustion heat by 3% (7.4 ± 0.2 MJ/kg for the mechanically activated Al-Mg powder and 7.1 ± 0.2 MJ/kg for the commercially available powder). The possibility of using the Al-Mg intermetallic powders as the main component of pyrotechnic and special compositions is shown.

RESUMO

Plant biofortification with selenium in interaction with the application of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)-based formulate, with the goal of enhancing Se bioavailability, is beneficial for the development of the environmentally friendly production of functional food with a high content of this microelement. Research was carried out in order to assess the effects of an AMF-based formulate and a non-inoculated control in factorial combination with two selenium treatments with an organic (selenocystine) or inorganic form (sodium selenate) and a non-treated control on the yield, quality, antioxidant properties, and elemental composition of shallot (Allium cepa L. Aggregatum group). Selenocystine showed the best effect on the growth and yield of mycorrhized plants, whereas sodium selenate was the most effective on the non-inoculated plants. The soluble solids, total sugars, monosaccharides, titratable acidity, and proteins attained higher values upon AMF inoculation. Sodium selenate resulted in higher soluble solids, total sugars and monosaccharide content, and titratable acidity than the non-treated control, and it also resulted in higher monosaccharides when compared to selenocystine; the latter showed higher protein content than the control. Calcium, Na, S, and Cl bulb concentrations were higher in the plants inoculated with the beneficial microorganisms. Calcium and sodium concentrations were higher in the bulbs of plants treated with both the selenium forms than in the control. Selenocystine-treated plants showed enhanced accumulation of sulfur and chlorine compared to the untreated plants. The AMF inoculation increased the bulb selenium content by 530%, and the Se biofortification with selenocystine and sodium selenate increased this value by 36% and 21%, respectively, compared to control plants. The AMF-based formulate led to increases in ascorbic acid and antioxidant activity when compared to the non-inoculated control. The bulb ascorbic acid was increased by fortification with both selenium forms when compared to the non-treated control. The results of our investigation showed that both AMF and selenium application represent environmentally friendly strategies to enhance the overall yield and quality performances of shallot bulbs, as well as their selenium content.

RESUMO

Resonant cavities with high quality factor and small mode volume provide crucial enhancement of light-matter interactions in nanophotonic devices that transport and process classical and quantum information. The production of functional circuits containing many such cavities remains a major challenge, as inevitable imperfections in the fabrication detune the cavities, which strongly affects functionality such as transmission. In photonic crystal waveguides, intrinsic disorder gives rise to high-Q localized resonances through Anderson localization; however their location and resonance frequencies are completely random, which hampers functionality. We present an adaptive holographic method to gain reversible control on these randomly localized modes by locally modifying the refractive index. We show that our method can dynamically form or break highly transmitting necklace states, which is an essential step toward photonic-crystal-based quantum networks and signal processing circuits, as well as slow light applications and fundamental physics.

RESUMO

The Baltic Sea is vulnerable to environmental changes. With the increasing shipping activities, the risk of oil spills remains high. Archaea are widely distributed in many environments. However, the distribution and the response of archaeal communities to oil contamination have rarely been investigated in brackish habitats. Hence, we conducted a survey to investigate the distribution, diversity, composition, and species interactions of indigenous archaeal communities at oil-contaminated sites along the coast of the Gulf of Finland (GoF) using high-throughput sequencing. Surface water and littoral sediment samples were collected at presumably oil-contaminated (oil distribution facilities) and clean sites along the coastline of the GoF in the winter 2015 and the summer 2016. Another three samples of open sea surface water were taken as offshore references. Of Archaea, Euryarchaeota dominated in the surface water and the littoral sediment of the coast of the GoF, followed by Crenarchaeota (including Thaumarchaeota, Thermoprotei, and Korarchaeota based on the Greengenes database used). The unclassified sequences accounted for 5.62% of the total archaeal sequences. Our study revealed a strong dependence of the archaeal community composition on environmental variables (e.g., salinity, pH, oil concentration, TOM, electrical conductivity, and total DNA concentration) in both littoral sediment and coastal water in the GoF. The composition of archaeal communities was season and ecosystem dependent. Archaea was highly diverse in the three ecosystems (littoral sediment, coastal water, and open sea water). Littoral sediment harbored the highest diversity of archaea. Oil was often detected in the littoral sediment but rarely detected in water at those presumably contaminated sites. Although the composition of archaeal community in the littoral sediment was sensitive to low-input oil contamination, the unchanged putative functional profiles and increased interconnectivity of the archaeal core species network plausibly revealed resilience and the potential for oil degradation. Halobacteriaceae and putative cytochrome P450 pathways were significantly enriched in the oil-contaminated littoral sediment. The archaeal taxa formed highly interconnected and interactive networks, in which Halobacteriaceae, Thermococcus, and methanogens were the main components, implying a potential relevant trophic connection between hydrocarbon degradation, methanogenesis, sulfate reduction, and/or fermentative growth.

RESUMO

Weakly coupled high-Q nanophotonic cavities are building blocks of slow-light waveguides and other nanophotonic devices. Their functionality critically depends on tuning as resonance frequencies should stay within the bandwidth of the device. Unavoidable disorder leads to random frequency shifts which cause localization of the light in single cavities. We present a new method to finely tune individual resonances of light in a system of coupled nanocavities. We use holographic laser-induced heating and address thermal crosstalk between nanocavities using a response matrix approach. As a main result we observe a simultaneous anticrossing of 3 nanophotonic resonances, which were initially split by disorder.

RESUMO

A new ternary telluride, Fe3-δAs1-yTe2, was synthesized from elements at 600 °C. It crystallizes in the hexagonal P63/mmc space group with the unit cell parameters a = 3.85091(9) Å and c = 17.1367(4) Å for δ = 0.3 and y = 0.04. Its layered crystal structure contains partially occupied intralayer and interlayer Fe positions, which give rise to significant nonstoichiometry: Fe3-δAs1-yTe2 was found to possess the homogeneity range of 0.25 < δ < 0.45 and y = 0.04. Regions of local vacancy ordering alternate with regions of randomly distributed vacancies, so that the ordering of Fe atoms and vacancies is not complete in the average structure. Clear evidence of the magnetic phase transition is obtained by thermodynamic measurements, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and neutron powder diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal weak ferromagnetism below TC = 123 K with a net moment of MS∼ 0.1µB/Fe at T = 2 K. This transition is confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry. Additionally, neutron powder diffraction indicates the onset of a complex AFM-like magnetic ordering below 100 K.

RESUMO

Near the band edge of photonic crystal waveguides, localized modes appear due to disorder. We demonstrate a new method to elucidate spatial profile of the localized modes in such systems using precise local tuning. Using deconvolution with the known thermal profile, the spatial profile of a localized mode with quality factor (Q) > 105 is successfully reconstructed with a resolution of 2.5 µm.
