RESUMO

Red leaf blotch (RLB) of almond, caused by the ascomycete Polystigma amygdalinum, is a severe foliar disease endemic in the Mediterranean Basin and Middle East. Airborne ascospores of P. amygdalinum were monitored from 2019 to 2021 in two almond orchards in Lleida, Spain, and a Bayesian beta regression was used to model its seasonal dynamics. The selected model incorporated accumulated degree-days (ADD), ADD considering both vapor pressure deficit and rainfall as fixed effects, and a random effect for the year and location. The performance of the model was evaluated in 2022 to optimize RLB fungicide programs by comparing the use of model predictions and action thresholds with the standard program. Two variants were additionally considered in each program to set the frequency between applications, based on (i) a fixed frequency of 21 days or (ii) specific meteorological criteria (spraying within 7 days after rainfalls greater than 10 mm, with daily mean temperatures between 10 and 20°C, and with a minimum frequency of 21 days between applications). Programs were evaluated in terms of RLB incidence and number of applications. The program based on the model with periodic fungicide applications was similarly effective as the standard program, resulting only in a 2.6% higher RLB incidence but with fewer applications (three to four, compared with seven in the standard program). When setting the frequency between applications by using the meteorological criteria, a higher reduction in the number of applications (two to three) was observed, while RLB incidence increased by roughly 16% in both programs. Therefore, the model developed in this study may represent a valuable tool toward a more sustainable fungicide schedule for the control of almond RLB in northeast Spain.

Patients with cirrhosis often develop malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, leading to a worse prognosis and increased mortality. Our main goal was to assess the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. This was a prospective single-center study including 125 consecutive patients hospitalized for acute decompensation of cirrhosis (mostly of alcoholic etiology). A blood test including trace elements and vitamins was performed on admission. The main micronutrient deficiencies observed were vitamin D (in 94.5%), vitamin A (93.5%), vitamin B6 (60.8%) and zinc (85.6%). Patients in Child-Pugh class C had lower levels of vitamin A (p < 0.0001), vitamin E (p = 0.01) and zinc (p < 0.001), and higher levels of ferritin (p = 0.002) and vitamin B12 (p < 0.001) than those in Child-Pugh class A and B. Patients with a higher model of end-stage liver disease (MELD) score had lower levels of vitamin A (p < 0.0001), vitamin E (p < 0.001), magnesium (p = 0.01) and zinc (p = 0.001), and higher levels of ferritin (p = 0.002) and vitamin B12 (p < 0.0001). Severe hepatic insufficiency correlated with lower levels of zinc, vitamin E and vitamin A, and higher levels of vitamin B12 and ferritin.

BACKGROUND: Aphids are a major insect pest of forestry systems. In this study, we evaluate the potential of the ladybeetle Scymnus nubilus Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) as a biological control agent against Aphis spiraecola Patch and Cinara juniperi (De Geer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) infesting Azorean endemic plants reared in forestry nurseries. RESULTS: Aphis spiraecola, infesting Viburnum treleasei Gand. (Dipsacales: Adroxaceae), was the most abundant aphid; however, a higher proportion of Juniperus brevifolia (Seub.) Antoine (Pinales: Cupressaceae) was infested by C. juniperi. Scymnus nubilus fourth instar larvae were able to complete development on both aphid species. Voracity was significantly higher when S. nubilus was fed on A. spiraecola but biomass consumption was significantly lower. The relative growth rate and conversion efficiency of the fourth instar larvae were similar. Field experiments indicated that S. nubilus can contribute to the decrease in pest population densities. However, the fourth instar larvae proved to be more efficient when released onto A. spiraecola; this outcome can be attributed to the distribution patterns of the aphids on the host plant and to the aphid or host plant morphology. Predator density and sleeve cage effect are apparently critical factors in reaching an efficient control. CONCLUSION: The obtained results provide the essential preliminary information required to establish future programs of biological control against aphids infesting Azorean endemic plants. Developmental and feeding performances, as well as the immediate impact of the predator when released onto A. spiraecola colonies, indicate that S. nubilus could be a useful candidate for reducing aphid populations. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.
