The tomato crop is susceptible to various types of stress, both biotic and abiotic, which affect the morphology, physiology, biochemistry, and genetic regulation of plants. Among the biotic factors, is the phytopathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol), which can cause losses of up to 100%. Graphene-Cu nanocomposites have emerged as a potential alternative for pathogen control, thanks to their antimicrobial activity and their ability to induce the activation of the antioxidant defense system in plants. In the present study, the effect of the Graphene-Cu nanocomposites and the functionalization of graphene in the tomato crop inoculated with Fol was evaluated, analyzing their impacts on the antioxidant defense system, the foliar water potential (Ψh), and the efficiency of photosystem II (PSII). The results demonstrated multiple positive effects; in particular, the Graphene-Cu nanocomposite managed to delay the incidence of the "vascular wilt" disease and reduce the severity by 29.0%. This translated into an increase in the content of photosynthetic pigments and an increase in fruit production compared with Fol. In addition, the antioxidant system of the plants was improved, increasing the content of glutathione, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, and the activity of the GPX, PAL, and CAT enzymes. Regarding the impact on the water potential and the efficiency of the PSII, the plants inoculated with Fol and treated with the Graphene-Cu nanocomposite responded better to biotic stress compared with Fol, reducing water potential by up to 31.7% and Fv/Fm levels by 32.0%.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological and physical distress commonly affect cancer patients. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) has shown promising results when it comes to ameliorating symptoms that may develop as a result of this. Meanwhile, it has come to light that the impact of psychological interventions may be enhanced by the use of mobile applications. However, to date no mobile applications have been developed to support ACT-based interventions in cancer patients. The aim of the present study is to develop and test the usability of a mobile application designed to complement face-to-face ACT-based therapy in a group of cancer patients undergoing treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of thirty-nine patients were recruited to participate in this pilot study. Participants had to be: 18 years of age or over, currently undergoing treatment for breast, lung or colorectal cancer, in stage I-III, a smartphone user with daily internet access. The intervention sessions were administered for a period of eight weeks, one hour per week to groups of four to six participants. Patients had the ACT-ON mobile application at their disposal, which provided them with access to therapy-related activities: mindfulness, metaphors and exercises to clarify values. RESULTS: The application obtained adequate adoption (61.54%) and usage (54.17%) rates. Usability and ease of learning scores were as follows: good usability (M = 79.81, SD = 11.87); high usability (M = 80.53, SD = 14.04); ease of learning (M = 37.5, SD = 23.85). DISCUSSION: This is the first study to develop and evaluate the usability of an application designed to support ACT-based interventions in cancer patients undergoing treatment. The results show that the ACT-ON app is a feasible tool which achieves high levels of usability. However, said results ought to be confirmed by studies that include a larger number of cancer patients.

In cancer caregivers, anxiety and depression may negatively impact quality of life. Information regarding correlations and the predictive capacity of anxiety and depression with regard to the domains of quality of life of caregivers 6 months after a patient's cancer diagnosis is sparse. Sixty-seven caregivers of cancer patients were recruited and completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) 30-45 days (T1) and 180-200 days (T2) after diagnosis. Depression and anxiety (T1) correlated with quality of life in terms of general health, vitality, social functioning, as well as role limitations due to emotional problems, and mental health (T2). Depression scores at T1 predicted general health, vitality, social functioning, role limitations due to emotional problems and mental health. Although these results are interesting, it must be noted that the sample size was somewhat limited and that the patients' cancer types may have influenced the results obtained. Psychological distress, particularly depression, correlated with and acted as a predictor for changes in the different domains of quality of life, highlighting the relevance of the evaluation of psychological distress in cancer caregivers shortly after cancer diagnosis. These results underscore the importance of differentiating between the different domains in the evaluation of impairments of quality of life in cancer caregivers.

Mice with a functional human immune system serve as an invaluable tool to study the development and function of the human immune system in vivo. A major technological limitation of all current humanized mouse models is the lack of mature and functional human neutrophils in circulation and tissues. To overcome this, we generated a humanized mouse model named MISTRGGR, in which the mouse granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was replaced with human G-CSF and the mouse G-CSF receptor gene was deleted in existing MISTRG mice. By targeting the G-CSF cytokine-receptor axis, we dramatically improved the reconstitution of mature circulating and tissue-infiltrating human neutrophils in MISTRGGR mice. Moreover, these functional human neutrophils in MISTRGGR are recruited upon inflammatory and infectious challenges and help reduce bacterial burden. MISTRGGR mice represent a unique mouse model that finally permits the study of human neutrophils in health and disease.

WRKY transcription factors (TFs) play key roles in plant defense responses through phytohormone signaling pathways. However, their functions in tropical fruit crops, especially in banana, remain largely unknown. Several WRKY genes from the model plants rice (OsWRKY45) and Arabidopsis (AtWRKY18, AtWRKY60, AtWRKY70) have shown to be attractive TFs for engineering disease resistance. In this study, we isolated four banana cDNAs (MaWRKY18, MaWRKY45, MaWRKY60, and MaWRKY70) with homology to these rice and ArabidopsisWRKY genes. The MaWRKY cDNAs were isolated from the wild banana Musa acuminata ssp. malaccensis, which is resistant to several diseases of this crop and is a progenitor of most banana cultivars. The deduced amino acid sequences of the four MaWRKY cDNAs revealed the presence of the conserved WRKY domain of ~60 amino acids and a zinc-finger motif at the N-terminus. Based on the number of WRKY repeats and the structure of the zinc-finger motif, MaWRKY18 and MaWRKY60 belong to group II of WRKY TFs, while MaWRKY45 and MaWRKY70 are members of group III. Their corresponding proteins were located in the nuclei of onion epidermal cells and were shown to be functional TFs in yeast cells. Moreover, expression analyses revealed that the majority of these MaWRKY genes were upregulated by salicylic acid (SA) or methyl jasmonate (MeJA) phytohormones, although the expression levels were relatively higher with MeJA treatment. The fact that most of these banana WRKY genes were upregulated by SA or MeJA, which are involved in systemic acquired resistance (SAR) or induced systemic resistance (ISR), respectively, make them interesting candidates for bioengineering broad-spectrum resistance in this crop.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors frequently develop cognitive impairment, which negatively affects their quality of life and emotional well-being. This study compares the effectiveness of a well-established treatment (neuropsychological treatment) with the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP) to reduce these cognitive deficits and evaluate the effect of both treatments on anxiety-depressive symptoms and the quality of life of cancer survivors. METHODS: A three-arm, randomized superiority clinical trial with a pre-post and repeated follow-up measures intergroup design using a 1:1:1 allocation ratio will be performed. One hundred and twenty-three cancer survivors with mild to moderate cognitive impairment will be randomly assigned to one of the study interventions: a cognitive rehabilitation intervention group, an intervention group with UP intervention, or a control group on the waiting list. The primary outcome is to observe a significant improvement in cognitive function in both intervention groups and a significant decrease in emotional impairments in comparison with the waitlist group. Improvements in anxiety, depression, and quality of life are also expected as secondary outcomes. These results will be maintained at 6 months of follow-up. DISCUSSION: The aim of this trial is to test the efficacy of the UP intervention in reducing cognitive deficits in breast cancer survivors. The results of this trial may be useful in reducing the presence of cognitive problems in cancer survivors and improving their emotional state and quality of life. Psychological flexibility is a key concept of acceptation and commitment therapy (ACT). This factor has been linked with psychological wellbeing and associated factors, such as quality of life, in cancer patients. These and other positive results of acceptation and commitment therapy in cancer patients found in previous research could be enhanced by using mhealth tools. A three-arm randomized superiority clinical trial, with a pre-post-follow-up repeated measures intergroup design with a 1:1:1 allocation ratio is proposed. A hundred and twenty cancer patients will be randomly assigned to one of the following interventions: (1) face-to-face ACT + mobile application (app), (2) face-to-face ACT, and (3) Waitlist control group. The primary expected outcome is to observe significant improvements in psychological flexibility acceptance and action questionnaire- II (AAQ-II) in the face-to-face ACT + app group, after comparing baseline and post-treatment scores, and the scores will remain stable in the two assessment points, 3 and 6 months after the intervention. Secondary expected outcomes are significant increasing scores in quality of life (EORTC QLQ C-30) and post-traumatic-growth (PTGI-SF), and significant decreasing scores in anxiety and depression (HADS), insomnia (ISI) and fatigue (BFI) at the same assessment points. Also, it is expected that the scores of this group will be higher than the scores of the face-to-face ACT group and the waitlist control group. This study aims to assess the efficacy of a combined intervention (face-to face ACT + app) for psychological flexibility and associated symptoms in cancer patients. The results of this protocol may help to consider the use of acceptation and commitment therapy and mhealth applications in cancer settings as a valid therapeutic choice. BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to analyse the relationships between anxiety, depression and quality of life in cancer patient-caregiver dyads during the first 6 months after the diagnosis using the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM). PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: Sixty-seven cancer patient-caregiver dyads completed the following questionnaires in a prospective longitudinal design, with two assessment points at a 6month interval, T1 (45-60) and T2 (180-200 days after diagnosis): the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36). Descriptive statistics, t-test and bivariate correlations were applied. The APIM was used to analyse the influence of anxiety and depression (T1) on own (actor effect) and partner (partner effect) quality of life in T2. RESULTS: The results did not reveal any differences between T1 and T2 in anxiety and depression in caregivers and patients. Assessing the differences between T1 and T2 with respect to quality of life, the caregiver results showed an improvement in physical functioning and bodily pain, but lower social functioning and mental health scores. For patients, significantly lower scores were observed in general health and vitality scores. Dyadic analysis showed an actor effect of anxiety and depression on most of the quality of life domains and a partner effect in caregiver depression (T1) and general health in patients (T2). CONCLUSIONS: The early assessment of anxiety and depression may help to prevent declines in quality of life in the first few months following a diagnosis of cancer in patient-caregiver dyads.

Tomato is one of the most important crops for human consumption. Its production is affected by the actinomycete Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm), one of the most devastating bacterial pathogens of this crop. Several wild tomato species represent a source of natural resistance to Cmm. Here, we contrasted the transcriptomes of the resistant wild tomato species Solanum arcanum LA2157 and the susceptible species Solanum lycopersicum cv. Ailsa Craig, during the first 24 h of challenge with Cmm. We used three analyses approaches which demonstrated to be complementary: mapping to S. lycopersicum reference genome SL3.0; semi de novo transcriptome assembly; and de novo transcriptome assembly. In a global context, transcriptional changes seem to be similar between both species, although there are some specific genes only upregulated in S. arcanum during Cmm interaction, suggesting that the resistance regulatory mechanism probably diverged during the domestication process. Although S. lycopersicum showed enriched functional groups related to defense, S. arcanum displayed a higher number of induced genes related to bacterial, oomycete, and fungal defense at the first few hours of interaction. This study revealed genes that may contribute to the resistance phenotype in the wild tomato species, such as those that encode for a polyphenol oxidase E, diacyl glycerol kinase, TOM1-like protein 6, and an ankyrin repeat-containing protein, among others. This work will contribute to a better understanding of the defense mechanism against Cmm, and the development of new control methods.

Agave lechuguilla has one of the widest distributions among other agave species in the Chihuahuan Desert. Their capacity to grow in poorly developed soils and harsh conditions has been related to their association with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. In this work, we explored how soil properties and plant growth stage influence the composition of the rhizobacterial communities, their interactions, and the enzymatic activity and abundance of nitrogen-fixing bacteria and organic phosphorus-mineralizing bacteria in two subregions of the Chihuahuan Desert. We found that mature plants of lechuguilla stimulated the activity and abundance of nutrient-improvement rhizobacteria, and these soil samples had a higher content of total organic carbon, ammonium (NH4) and nitrite + nitrate (NO2+NO3). Nutrient availability seems to be an essential driver of the bacterial community's structure since the genera with more connections (hubs) were those with known mechanisms related to the availability of nutrients, such as env. OPS17 (Bacteroidetes), Gemmatimonadaceae uncultured, S0134terrestrial group, BD211terrestrial group (Gemmatimonadetes), Chthoniobacteracea and Candidatus Udaeobacter (Verrucomicrobia). This work shows that the late growth stages of lechuguilla recruit beneficial bacteria that favor its establishment and tolerance to harsh conditions of the arid lands.

Bordetella pertusis causes whooping cough or pertussis, disease that has not been eradicated and is reemerging despite the availability and massive application for decades of vaccines, such as Boostrix® which is an acellular vaccine harboring two regions of S1 subunit of the pertussis toxin, one region of filamentous hemagglutinin and one region of pertactin. In 2008, the World Health Organization estimated 16 million new cases and 95% occurred in developing countries with 195,000 children's deaths. We attempt to improve the vaccine against whooping cough and reduce its production costs by obtaining plants and bacteria expressing a heterologous protein harboring pertactin, pertussis toxin, and filamentous hemagglutinin epitopes from B. pertussis and assessing its immunogenicity after oral administration to mice. First, we designed a synthetic gene that encodes a multiepitope, then it was cloned into a vector for transient transformation by infiltration of tobacco plants with low amounts of nicotine; the codon bias-optimized construct was also cloned into an Escherichia coli expression vector. Recombinant proteins from E. coli cells (PTF) and tobacco leaves (PTF-M3') were purified by nickel affinity with a yield of 0.740 mg of recombinant protein per g dry weight. Purified recombinant proteins were administered orally to groups of Balb/c mice using the Boostrix® vaccine and vehicle (PBS) as positive and negative controls, respectively. A higher mucosal and systemic antibody responses were obtained in mice receiving the PTF and PTF-M3' proteins than Boostrix® or PBS. These findings prove the concept that oral administration of multiepitope recombinant proteins expressed in plants may be a potential edible vaccine. It's been almost a century since immunologists started using adjuvants as tools to develop more effective vaccines. Despite the rising number of adjuvanted vaccines in the last decades, we still lack knowledge of the adjuvants' effects on antibody response. This study was aimed to test the effect of immunizing mice with the human Inactivated Influenza vaccine (IIV), either alone or combined with different widely used adjuvants on the specific antibody response induced. Differential levels of IgM and IgG subclasses were found with the different adjuvants tested. Higher levels of antibodies did not always correspond with a higher efficacy to interfere with the virus infectivity. Differences in neutralization properties are possibly mediated by the specificity of the repertoire of antibodies induced. The repertoire was studied using a phage display 7-mer peptide library to screen for epitopes/mimotopes recognized by serum pools from vaccinated mice. The selected phage clones included peptides that corresponded to conformational mimotopes since they have no homology with lineal sequences of the Influenza strains' proteins. Five peptides were identified as recognized by sera from mice immunized with the IIV vaccine alone, including peptides from the hemagglutinin stalk domain, and by sera from mice immunized with the vaccine plus the different adjuvants employed. Adjuvants elicited a more diverse repertoire of epitope-recognizing antibodies that recognized epitopes of the HA recombinant globular head. Mimotopes were theoretically located at the neutralizing antigenic sites of the globular head of Influenza A H1N1pdm09, Influenza A H3N2, and Influenza B hemagglutinin. This study illustrates how different adjuvants can modify the extent and quality of humoral immunity against the IIV vaccine and the effectiveness of vaccination.

This year, a respiratory virus caused an emergency pandemic alert in health services around the world, showing the need for biotechnological approaches to fight these diseases. The influenza virus is one of the main viral agents that generate pandemic outbreaks. Currently, the majority of co-circulating influenza A virus (IAV) strains are adamantine- and oseltamivir-resistant strains, and the challenge is to find new antivirals for more efficient treatments. The antiviral entry blocker (EB) peptide is a promising candidate for blocking the virus entry into cells. The aim of this research was to express the EB peptide in the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and test its antiviral activity against IAV in vitro. The EB peptide nucleotide sequence was introduced into the nuclear genome of microalgae using Agrobacterium tumefaciens transformation. The EB peptide amount produced in transformed microalgae was 4.99 ± 0.067% of the total soluble protein. In hemagglutination inhibition assays using influenza A/H1N1 pdm and influenza A H1N1/Virginia/ATCC/2009 strains, we reported that the EB peptide extract from the microalgae showed 100-fold higher efficiency than the EB synthetic peptide. In addition, both the EB peptide extract and synthetic peptide inhibited viral replication in MDCK cells (IC50 = 20.7 nM and IC50 = 754.4 nM, respectively); however, the EB peptide extract showed a 32-fold higher antiviral effectiveness than the synthetic peptide against influenza A/H1N1 pdm. Extracts from untransformed and transformed microalgae and synthetic peptide did not show cytotoxic effect on MDCK cell monolayers. Thus, C. reinhardtii may be a fast, safe, and effective expression platform for production of peptides with significant antiviral activity and can be used as a prophylactic treatment to reduce viral propagation.

AIM: Caregivers of cancer patients are at high risk of experiencing impairments in terms of anxiety, depression and quality of life. This study examines the mediation capacity that perceived emotional support can have after diagnosis and six months later between depression and anxiety after diagnosis and quality of life in informal caregivers of cancer patients. DESIGN: A sample of 67 informal caregivers of cancer patients was used. This study is longitudinal, ex post facto prospective, with convenience sampling. METHODS: Participants completed the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form (SF-36), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Berlin Social Support Scale (BSSS) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Data were collected between March 2017 and November 2018. RESULTS: Spearman's correlation analysis showed that anxiety, depression and perceived emotional support were related to quality of life. The mediation analysis showed that the relationship between depression after diagnosis and quality of life six months later was mediated by perceived emotional support.

The diseases that attack the tomato crop are a limiting factor for its production and are difficult to control or eradicate. Stem and fruit rot and leaf blight caused by Alternaria solani causes severe damage and substantial yield losses. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) could be an alternative for the control of pathogens since they have strong antimicrobial activity, in addition to inducing the activation of the antioxidant defense system in plants. In the present study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were evaluated on the incidence and severity of A. solani. Moreover, to the impact they have on the antioxidant defense system and the photosynthetic capacity of the tomato crop. The results show that the application of CNTs had multiple positive effects on tomato crop. CNTs decreased the incidence and severity of A. solani. Furthermore, CNTs increased the fruit yield of tomato crop and dry shoot biomass. The antioxidant system was improved, since the content of ascorbic acid, flavonoids, and the activity of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme were increased. The net photosynthesis and water use efficiency were also increased by the application of CNTs. CNTs can be an option to control A. solani in tomato crop, and diminish the negative impact of this pathogen.

The need to produce food in a sustainable way to counteract the effects of excessive use of agrochemicals opens the door to the generation of new technologies that are not based on fossil fuels and are less toxic to ecosystems. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) could represent an alternative to chemical biofertilizers and pesticides offering protection for biotic and abiotic stresses. In this work, a bacterial isolate from roots of castor bean (Ricinus communis) was identified and named as Bacillus cereus strain "Amazcala" (B.c-A). This isolate displayed the ability to solubilize inorganic phosphate and produce gibberellic acid (GA3). Moreover, this bacterium provided significant increases in height, stem width, dry weight, and total chlorophyll content in tomato plants. Interestingly, B.c-A also significantly decreased the severity of bacterial canker disease on tomato caused by Clavibacter michiganensis (Cmm) in preventive disease assays under greenhouse conditions. Based on our results, B.c-A can be considered as PGPB and a useful tool in Cmm disease control on tomato plant under greenhouse conditions.

A revision of the Central American species of the genus Brachiacantha was undertaken to update the knowledge of the Central American species of the genus. Material of several collections was reviewed, using original descriptions and keys, and comparing with the type material. Twenty-five species of the genus Brachiacantha were found in Central American material, including nine new species: B. nubes Nestor-Arriola, Toledo-Hernández and Solís, sp. nov., B. dentata Nestor-Arriola, Toledo-Hernández and Solís, sp. nov., B. isthmena Nestor-Arriola, Toledo-Hernández and Solís, sp. nov., B. aurantiapleura Nestor-Arriola, Solís and Toledo-Hernández, sp. nov., B. invertita Nestor-Arriola, Toledo-Hernández and Solís, sp. nov., B. papiliona Nestor-Arriola, Toledo-Hernández and Solís, sp. nov., B. tica Nestor-Arriola, Toledo-Hernández and Solís, sp. nov., B. hexaspina González, Vetrovec and Nestor-Arriola, sp. nov., and B. mimica Nestor-Arriola and Toledo-Hernández, sp. nov. Nomenclatural changes include Brachiacantha gorhami (Weise), comb. nov., B. guatemalensis (Gorham), comb. nov., and Brachiacantha duodecimguttata Leng, syn. nov. for B. lepida Mulsant. The male genitalia of the species B. fenestrata Gorhan, B. octostigma Mulsant, B. aperta Weise, and B. cachensis Gorhan are described and illustrated for the first time. New records include B. indubitabilis Crotch and B. bipartita Mulsant (Costa Rica and Guatemala), B. gorhami (Weise) (El Salvador), and B. cachensis Gorham (Panamá). A key to the species is included.

RESUMO

The biogeography of the mammalian intestine is remarkable in that a vast microbial consortium exists inside the organism, surrounded by intestinal epithelial cells. The microbiome and the intestinal epithelium have developed a complex network of interactions that maintain intestinal homeostasis. We now recognize that functions of the epithelium are compartmentalized in specific intestinal epithelial cell subtypes. Furthermore, we are beginning to understand the ways in which microbes and their metabolic products impact the specific epithelial subsets. Here, we survey the mechanisms utilized by the microbiome to regulate intestinal epithelial function, and inversely, how different epithelial cell subtypes cooperate in regulating the microbiome.

Cancer caregiving is associated with burden and a poor psychological state. However, there is no previous information about the predictive utility of specific burden domains on anxiety and depression in the first six months after a partner's cancer diagnosis. In a longitudinal study, 67 caregivers completed the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) at T1 (45-60 days after diagnosis) and T2 (180-200 days after diagnosis). Most of the caregivers were female (65.7%, mean age = 51.63, SD = 13.25), while patients were mostly male (56.7%). The TRIPOD checklist was applied. ZBI scores were moderate and HADS anxiety reached significant values. There were no differences in ZBI and HADS between T1 and T2. The relationship between burden, anxiety, and depression were more consistent at T2, while emotional burden at T1 were related and predicted anxiety and depression at T2. Some burden domains were related and predicted anxiety in caregivers in the first six months after partner cancer diagnosis. This information could be useful to prevent the onset of these symptoms in the first six months after diagnosis.

Resumen En el 2001, se identificó en Holanda al metapneumovirus humano (hMPV) como un "nuevo" agente etiológico causante de infecciones respiratorias agudas en infantes menores de 5 años; sin embargo, también se ha aislado en personas de la tercera edad e inmunocomprometidos. Este virus se considera como el segundo agente etiológico en enfermedades agudas del tracto respiratorio. En la actualidad, el costo estimado de las infecciones respiratorias agudas (IRA) en nuestro país es de 9,000 dólares estadounidenses por paciente hospitalizado. El hMPV es un miembro del género Metapneumovirus, familia Pneumoviridae, que pertenece al orden de los Mononegavirales, correspondiente a virus de ácido ribonucleico (RNA) monocatenario negativo, que consta de 8 genes en el orden 3'-N-P-M-F-M2-SH-G-L-5', y que codifica para 9 proteínas. De estas proteínas, la glicoproteína de fusión F está altamente conservada en el género Metapneumovirus y es el mayor determinante antigénico, y al no existir aún vacuna aprobada para este virus, se ha utilizado como un epítopo candidato para el diseño de una vacuna que confiera inmunidad al hospedero o como un blanco terapéutico en la creación de péptidos antivirales que inhiban la fusión del virus a su célula blanco y se evite la infección en sujetos de alto riesgo de contagio, ya que en la actualidad no se ha aprobado por la COFEPRIS ningún tratamiento profiláctico contra hMPV.


Abstract In 2001 in the Netherlands, Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) was identified as a "new" etiologic agent causing acute respiratory infections in children younger than 5 years old; however, it has also been isolated in the elderly and immunocompromised people. This virus is considered the second etiological agent in acute diseases of the respiratory tract. Currently, the estimated cost of IRAs in our country is of 9,000 USD per inpatient. hMPV is a member of the genus Metapneumovirus, family Pneumoviridae, and it belongs to the order Mononegavirales that is part of the negative single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus, consisting of eight genes ordered: 3'-N-P-M-F-M2-SH-G-L-5 ', and which encodes for 9 proteins. Of these proteins, the F fusion glycoprotein is highly conserved in the genus Metapneumovirus, and is the major antigenic determinant, and because an approved vaccine doesn't exist, it has been used as a candidate epitope for the design of a vaccine that confers host immunity or as a therapeutic target in the creation of antiviral peptides that inhibit the fusion of the virus to its target cell and to avoid infection in subjects at high risk of contagion since there is currently none accepted by COFEPRIS as a prophylactic treatment against hMPV.
