RESUMO

Aiming of self-sustainable production, the search for biodegradable and biocompatible materials has brought with it the need to know the physicochemical and dielectric characteristics of polysaccharide-based composite structures, which can be used as important and promising raw materials for biotechnology and electronic industries. Galactomannans are polysaccharides, extracted from seeds and microbiological sources, consisting of mannose and galactose. In this context, this work aimed to extract, purify and characterize by XRD, FTIR and impedance spectroscopy galactomannan obtained from seeds of Adenanthera pavonina L. The purification process was made with ethyl alcohol at concentrations of 70, 80 and 90 %. Polymeric films were prepared by solvent slow evaporation at low temperatures. XRD measurements revealed that Galactomannan from Adenanthera pavonina L., after purification, has a semi-crystalline structure due to the identification of two peaks the first between 5.849° and 6.118° and the second between 20.011° and 20.247°. FTIR spectra showed the functional groups associated with monosaccharides of the galactomannan from Adenanthera pavonina L. seeds, as well as the typical polysaccharide bands and peaks, confirmed by literature data. The impedance results give an increment on the state-of-the-art of this biomaterial by showing the existence of dielectric relaxations, independent of the degree of purification, using the dielectric modulus formalism. The permittivity analysis reveals the presence of water in the structure of the film, whose dipoles contribute to the relatively high value of the dielectric constant. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that purified galactomannan has the potential for possible applications in the electronics industry as a green and eco-friendly dielectric material.

RESUMO

The nature and symmetry of transition mechanisms in the spin-spiral copper halides CuCl2 and CuBr2 are analyzed theoretically. The magnetoelectric effects observed in the two multiferroic compounds are described and their phase diagram at zero and applied magnetic fields are worked out. The emergence of the electric polarization at zero field below the paramagnetic phase is shown to result from the coupling of two distinct spin-density waves and to be only partly related to the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya interactions. Applying a magnetic field along the two-fold monoclinic axis of CuCl2 yields a decoupling of the spin-density waves modifying the symmetry of the phase and the spin-spiral orientation. The remarkable periodic dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and polarization, on rotating the field in the monoclinic plane, are described theoretically.

RESUMO

We introduce a model system composed of two input discrete chains nonlinearly coupled to a single output chain which mimics the geometry of Y-shaped carbon nanotubes, photonic crystal wave guides, and DNA junctions. We explore the capability of the proposed system to perform logic gate operations based on the transmission of phase-shifted harmonic incoming waves. Within a tight-binding approach, we determine the exact transmission spectrum which exhibits a nonlinear induced bistability. Using a digitalization scheme of the output signal based on amplitude modulation, we show that AND, OR, and XOR logic operations can be achieved. Nonlinearity strongly favors the realization of logic operations in the regime of large wavelengths, while phase shifting is required for the OR logic gate to be realizable. A detailed analysis of the contrast ratio shows that optimal operation of the AND and OR logic gates takes place when the nonlinear response is the predominant physical property distinguishing the coupling and regular sites. These results point towards the possibility of Y-branched junctions to perform logic operations based on the transmission of traveling waves.

RESUMO

The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is to control periodontal tissue inflammation and to produce predictable regeneration of that part of the periodontium which has been lost as a result of periodontal disease. In guided tissue regeneration membranes function as mechanical barriers, excluding the epithelium and gingival corium from the root surface and allowing regeneration by periodontal ligament cells. This report aims to study the effect of glutaraldehyde (GA) cross-linking on mineralized polyanionic collagen (PAC) membranes by conducting a histological evaluation of the tissue response (biocompatibility) and by assessing the biodegradation of subcutaneous membrane implants in rats. We studied six different samples: a PAC, a PAC mineralized by alternate soaking processes for either 25 or 75 cycles (PAC 25 and PAC 75, respectively) and these films cross-linked by GA. Inflammatory infiltrate, cytokine dosage, fibrosis capsule thickness, metalloproteinase immunohistochemistry and membrane biodegradation after 1, 7, 15 and 30 days were measured. The inflammatory response was found to be more intense in membranes without cross-linking, while the fibrosis capsules became thicker in cross-linked membranes after 30 days. The membranes without cross-linking suffered intense biodegradation, while the membranes with cross-linking remained intact after 30 days. The cross-linking with GA reduced the inflammatory response and prevented degradation of the membranes over the entire course of the observation period. These membranes are thus an attractive option when the production of new bone depends on the prolonged presence of a mechanical barrier.

RESUMO

We analyze and propose a directional optical coupler embedded in photonic crystal, which is driven by an external command signal. Therefore, this switching cell can work in an all-optical switch. The switching method uses a low-power external command signal, inserted in the central coupling region, which acts as another waveguide. The switching process is based on the change from the bar state to the cross state due to the external command signal. In our simulations we used the plane wave expansion method, finite-difference time-domain method, and our own binary propagation method.

RESUMO

In this work it is presented for the first time the nanostructured hydroxyapatites doped with 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt% of Eu(3+) prepared at room temperature by the mechanical alloying technique. X-ray diffraction powder (XRD), infrared (IR) and Raman scattering spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microhardness measurements as well as luminescent data of Eu(3+) were used to investigate the structural and optical properties of these nanomaterials. The electrical and dielectrical analyses were used with the intention of having a better comprehension about the electromagnetic fields in pure and doped hydroxyapatites.

RESUMO

The present study focuses on apatite coating on collagen films, with various different densities of carboxyl groups, using an alternate soaking process. Anionic collagen (AC), which has different densities of carboxylic groups compared to native collagen (NC), was obtained by hydrolysis of carboxyamides of asparagine and glutamine residues. From X-ray diffraction analysis, apatite was found to be coated on AC and NC films. Peaks ascribed to apatite were observed at 26 degrees and 32 degrees in the diffraction patterns of hydroxyapatite crystals. The amount of apatite coated on both AC and NC collagen films continued to increase up to 100 reaction cycles. However, there is a significant difference in apatite coating between the two films. The amount of apatite formed on the surface of AC film increased 1.24 times faster than on NC film. The scanning electron photomicrograph images of the mineralized NC and the AC film coatings formed after 100cycles show that regular porous apatite coating had formed within the collagen fibrils. These results suggest that the higher content of carboxyl groups in AC plays an effective role in the heterogeneous nucleation of apatite in the body environment.

RESUMO

In this paper, impedance measurements in the frequency range from 10(-2) to 10(6) Hz are presented for collagen and algal sulfated polysaccharide crosslinked films. We are considering the development of new biomaterials which have potential applications in coating of cardiovascular prostheses, support for cellular growth and in systems for controlled drug delivery. The effect of crosslink sulfated polysaccharide on the physical chemical properties of collagen was studied using FT-infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dielectric spectroscopy. The resulting films crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) in concentrations of 0.001% and 0.05% when analysed by DSC, showed that the GA treatment not only left the thermal stability of the collagen unaffected, but it also decreased the thermal transition energy. Dielectric spectroscopy shows that the effect of the crosslink on the blend film was associated to the decrease and stabilization of the dielectric permittivity at low frequencies and decreased its conductivity.
