RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of ovarian yolk sac tumor (OYST). Methods: The clinicopathological data and follow-up data of 12 patients with OYST admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from January 2013 to December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed, and the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of OYST patients were summarized. Results: (1) The age of 12 patients with OYST ranged from 11 to 37 years, with a median age of 20 years. At the first visit, all 12 patients had pelvic masses. Reasons for seeing a doctor: 6 cases of abdominal distension and abdominal pain, 4 cases of mass in the lower abdomen, 1 case of vaginal bleeding, and 1 case of appendicitis. International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO) 2014 staging: 4 cases in stage Ⅰa, 2 cases in stage Ⅰc, 1 case in stage Ⅱc, 4 cases in stage Ⅲc, and 1 case in stage Ⅳb. (2) All 12 patients were examined by color Doppler ultrasound before operation, among which 10 cases showed unilateral adnexal masses and 2 cases bilateral adnexal masses. The median maximum diameter of tumor was 16.5 cm (range: 6.0-28.0 cm). The preoperative levels of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) in 12 patients (all >1 210 µg/L) were significantly higher than normal (<25 µg/L). Among the 11 patients with cancer antigen 125 (CA125) detection results, 9 patients showed elevated serum CA125 levels. (3) Among the 12 patients, 8 young infertile patients who needed to preserve their reproductive function underwent appendectomy, 3 infertile patients underwent staged surgery for ovarian malignant germ cell tumor, and only one bilateral lesion and infertile patient underwent unsatisfactory staged surgery for ovarian malignant germ cell tumor. Of the 12 patients, 11 patients were given combined chemotherapy regimen of bleomycin, cisplatin, and etoposide (BEP) after operation. One patient without chemotherapy developed metastasis 3 months after operation, and was given BEP chemotherapy, and her condition was controlled. (4) The deadline for follow-up was December 31st, 2022, and the median follow-up time was 60 months (range: 25-115 months). All the 12 patients survived without tumor during the follow-up period, and the median disease-free survival time was 84.5 months (range: 25-115 months). Conclusions: OYST mostly occurs in children and young women. Color Doppler ultrasound examination and serum AFP and CA125 detection have diagnostic value for OYST. Surgical treatment after diagnosis of OYST includes surgery to preserve reproductive function and timely and standardized chemotherapy after operation. The prognosis of patients is good regardless of stage.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: During menopause, women are more likely to develop coronary heart disease (CHD) due to the significant changes in body metabolism brought on by the loss of estrogen. The purpose of this study was to investigate the independent association between platelet parameters and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in postmenopausal patients with coronary artery disease in order to clarify the function performed by platelet parameters and BUN in thrombosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We took information from the NHANES between 2003 and 2016. Platelet count (PC), mean platelet volume (MPV), and PC/MPV were the independent variables, BUN was the dependent variable, and age, race, marital status, body mass index (BMI), inflammation indicators, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were the covariates. RESULTS: BUN decreased with increasing PC in postmenopausal heart disease patients after controlling for other factors. When PC/MPV was less than 30.5, there was a strong negative correlation with BUN. In addition, there was a strong positive correlation with BUN when MPV was less than 9.3 fL. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying thrombosis in postmenopausal women with CHD and offer fresh perspectives on how to create novel antithrombotic medications for an aging population.

RESUMO

Objectives: To clarify the effect of initial periodontal therapy on the dynamic changes of oral (saliva, dorsal tongue and subgingival plaque) microbiota in periodontitis patients with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: A total of 14 patients with chronic periodontitis (CP group) and 14 CP patients with T2DM (CP-T2DM group) were included from Department of Periodontology, School and Hospital of Stomatology,Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University. The microbial samples were collected from saliva, dorsal tongue and subgingival plaque of first molars at baseline, 1.5 and 3 months after initial periodontal therapy, and were detected by 16S rRNA (V3-V4 region) gene sequencing. The sequencing data were analyzed to obtain microbial distribution and community structure information. The same professional periodontist evaluated the periodontal status of patients according to periodontitis detection indices before and after initial periodontal therapy. Meanwhile, patients' blood samples were collected and related metabolic indices were evaluated. Results: After initial periodontal therapy, the glycosylated hemoglobin levels [(7.46±1.69)%] in CP-T2DM group were significantly improved than that at baseline [(7.65±1.34)%] (t=0.52,P=0.610). The probing depth of the sampling sites [CP group: (2.94±0.46) mm, CP-T2DM group: (2.95±0.35) mm] and bleeding index (CP group: 1.91±0.42, CP-T2DM group: 1.67±0.49) at 3 months after treatment were significantly decreased than the probing depth [CP group: (3.99±0.77) mm, CP-T2DM group: (3.80±0.76) mm] (F=25.61, P<0.001; F=17.63, P<0.001) and bleeding index (CP group: 3.03±0.52, CP-T2DM group: 2.54±0.65) (F=28.43, P<0.001; F=20.21, P<0.001) at baseline. The flora analysis showed that the α and ß diversity indices of the same sites in the CP and CP-T2DM groups did not change significantly before and after the initial therapy, but the bacterial abundance at each site changed. There were commonalities and differences in the microbial composition of each site in the CP and CP-T2DM groups. Among them, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria in saliva and dorsal tongue samples of the two groups after treatment was basically consistent with the change trend in the subgingival plaque microbes. In the subgingival plaque of the CP group, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria showed a gradual increase with the prolongation of initial periodontal therapy; while in the CP-T2DM group, it showed a trend of first increase and then decrease. Syntrophy, Dethiosulfate, Methanobacteriaceae and TG5 in CP and CP-T2DM groups were all significantly dominant bacteria in subgingival plaque at baseline (P<0.05). Moreover, in the CP-T2DM group Spirochetes also showed a significant advantage. At 1.5 months after treatment, Rhizobacteria, Alcaligenes, Comamomons, Delftia, Blautella, etc. were dominant in subgingival plaque (P<0.05). Firmicutes, Clostridia/Clostridiales, Enterococci and Ruminococci showed significant differences at 3 months (P<0.05). Conclusions: Plaques in saliva and tongue dorsal could reflect the effects of initial periodontal therapy on the dynamic changes of microorganisms to a certain extent. CP and CP-T2DM patients had differences in microbial composition and responses to initial periodontal therapy.

RESUMO

Although many studies have already described the physiological effects of bee products, such as honey, propolis, pollen, and royal jelly, on livestock farming, the health benefits of the honeycomb are still not fully understood. The problem of drug residues and bacterial resistance caused by the abuse of antibiotics is becoming increasingly serious. For this reason, a safe, green substitute has to be sought. We conducted a comparative study of honeycomb extract (HE) and an antibiotic on growth performance, carcass traits, immunity, antioxidant function and intestinal microorganisms of yellow bantam broilers. A total of four hundred eighty 21-day-old female yellow bantam broilers were randomly divided into 5 groups of 6 replicates of 16 birds each. The 5 groups were as follows, with birds receiving a basal diet supplemented with 150 ppm (mg/kg) of chlortetracycline (CTE), a basal diet without HE (control group), and a basal diet with 0.1%, 0.15%, or 0.2% HE for 60 days. The results showed that HE addition significantly increased average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), decrease feed gain ratio (F/G) from 21 to 80 and 51 to 80 days of age compared to the control group, with all 3 HE addition groups having statistically identical values to the antibiotic group. HE implementation dramatically increased spleen index, serum immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin M (IgM,), glutathione peroxide (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and total cecum bacteria and Lactobacillus compared to the control group, numerically at the same level as, or even better than, the antibiotic group. HE and CTE both markly reduced serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration compared to the control group, with higher concentrations of HE reducing the effect more dramatically than antibiotics. Both HE and CTE significantly raised dressed yield compared to the control group. In summary, HE, as a potential antibiotic alternative, improved growth performance, carcass traits, immune function, serum antioxidant capacity and intestinal microorganisms in yellow bantam broilers. According to the cubic regression analyses, the recommended supplemental dose of HE was calculated to be 0.15 to 0.17% for female yellow bantam broilers between 21 and 80 d of age.

RESUMO

We evaluated the combined effects of vacuumed hydrogen peroxide vapour (VHPV) and vacuum-sealed dry heat (vacuum heat, VH) to inactivate food-borne pathogens (Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes) on alfalfa seeds. Alfalfa seeds inoculated with food-borne pathogens were sequentially treated initially with 1·0 ml of 0 or 30% VHPV for 1 min and later with dry heat (DH) or VH for 2 h, and the rate of seed germination was evaluated. The combination treatment decreased the populations of three food-borne pathogens below the limit of detection (1·0 log CFU per gram) on alfalfa seeds without decreasing germinability. The sequential treatment using VHPV and VH greatly reduced the total treatment time needed to inactivate pathogens on alfalfa seeds by more than 5 log CFU per gram. These results demonstrate that a combination of VHPV and VH has potentially employed as a new method for pasteurization of alfalfa seeds without affecting their germinability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To improve the safety and early detection of unexpected breast implant-related complications, the Korean Breast Implant Registry (K-BIR) was launched in 2020 in cooperation with the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and a pilot study was conducted. OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of our pilot study and experiences of the K-BIR. METHODS: The dataset to be used in the pilot form of K-BIR was constructed by holding online surveys and meetings focusing on the global breast device registry's minimum dataset. A pilot study was implemented from April 1, 2020, to July 31, 2020, with six university teaching hospitals and four private clinics. RESULTS: During the pilot study period, 325 patients, 451 procedures, and 366 implants were entered into the K-BIR. The most common procedure registered was augmentation mammaplasty (30%) for cosmetic indications, followed by direct-to-implant breast reconstruction (27%). Smooth silicone implant was the most common type (73%) of implant used. A feedback survey after the pilot study included questions about the registration rate compared with an actual procedure, entry time, reasons for difficulty in entry, and additional data needed. CONCLUSIONS: The continuous maintenance and development of K-BIR will require an effective dataset, a strengthened legal system for an opt-out registry and personal data protection, various incentives for increasing participation rates, and an electronic platform that patients, manufacturers, and clinicians can easily access. K-BIR has the potential to provide quality assurance and outcomes for research and post-market surveillance systems for breast implants as well as methods for enhancing patient safety.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the expression of SET-NUP214 fusion gene in hematological malignancies and to analyze its related clinical biological characteristics. Methods: The clinical data of 24 patients with SET-NUP214 fusion gene-positive hematological malignancies were retrospectively analyzed, and the Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis. Results: Among the 24 patients with SET-NUP214 fusion gene, 15 cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (13 cases of T-ALL and 2 cases of B-ALL) , 7 cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) , and 2 cases of T/myeloid mixed acute leukemia have been identified. The immunophenotype of 13 cases of T-ALL was mainly characterized by CD3(+)CD2(-), 73.3% of ALL was characterized by myeloid marker expression, and 85.7% of AML was characterized by CD7 expression. Complete remission (CR) was achieved in 22 patients (91.7%) after induction chemotherapy. All 24 patients received allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) . With a median follow-up of 24 months, the 3-year relapse free survival (RFS) of AML and ALL was 85.7% and 33.3%, respectively (P=0.128) . Comparing 13 cases of SET-NUP214-positive and 62 cases of SET-NUP214-negative T-ALL, the CR rates of induction chemotherapy were 92.3% and 93.5% (P=0.445) , and the 4-week CR rates of induction chemotherapy were 69.2% and 72.6%, respectively (P=0.187) ; the differences were not statistically significant. After HSCT, the 3-year RFS of SET-NUP214(+)T-ALL and SET-NUP214(-)T-ALL was 38.5% and 66.4%, respectively (P=0.028) , and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: The SET-NUP214 fusion gene is mainly detected in T cell-derived hematological malignancies, and the prognosis of SET-NUP214 positive T-ALL is relatively poor.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the functional outcomes of repairing parietal and occipital defect after surgery for cancer by lower trapezius myocutaneous flap with latissimus dorsi. Methods: Retrospective analyses of eight patients were performed who underwent repairing parietal and occipital defects with dural exposure after surgeries for cancers from January 2015 to January 2020 in Tianjin Institute of Occupational Disease Control and Prevention (Tianjin Workers Hospital) and the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University, including 6 males and 2 females aged from 26 to 68 years old. The method for harvesting the lower trapezius myocutaneous flap was improved and thus the lower trapezius myocutaneous flaps with latissimus dorsi were used for repairing the parietal and occipital defects. The area of myocutaneous flap depended on the size of defect. Results: The defects were repaired with the flaps with areas ranging from 12 cm×8 cm to 17 cm×15 cm. Seven flaps survived after surgery and the wounds were healed. Blisters and bruise were observed at the distal end of one flap 2 days after operation, which were cured with dressing change for 10 days. All cases were followed-up for six months, with normal functions of the shoulder joints, aside from mild hypertrophic scar in donor site on the back. Conclusion: It is feasible to use the lower trapezius myocutaneous flap with latissimus dorsi to repair the parietal and occipital defect after surgery for cancer, and the clinical effect is satisfactory.

RESUMO

Recent studies have shown that chromium (Cr) could alleviate the negative effects of heat stress on livestock and poultry, but there is little information available to laying ducks. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary addition of chromium propionate on laying performance, egg quality, serum biochemical parameters and antioxidant status of laying ducks under hot (average 32 °C) and humid (average 75% relative humidity) summer conditions. A total of 900 66-week-old weight- and laying-matched Shanma laying ducks were randomly divided into five treatments, each with 6 replicates of 30 individually caged birds. The birds were fed either a basal diet or the basal diet supplemented with either 200, 400, 600, or 800 µg/kg Cr as chromium propionate. All laying ducks were given feed and water ad libitum for 5 weeks. The results showed that dietary supplementation with chromium propionate significantly increased the laying rate and yolk colour score (P < 0.05). Treatment with 400 µg/kg Cr as chromium propionate significantly decreased the feed/egg ratio by 5.4% (P < 0.05). Increased supplemental Cr from 0 to 800 µg/kg resulted in an increase in albumen height and the Haugh unit linearly (P < 0.05). Increased supplemental Cr decreased serum cortisol (P < 0.001, linear; P = 0.008, quadratic), heat shock protein-70 (P < 0.001, linear; P = 0.007, quadratic) and glucose (P = 0.007, linear), whereas it increased serum insulin (P = 0.011, Linear), total protein (P = 0.006, linear; P = 0.048, quadratic) and albumin (P = 0.035, linear; P = 0.088, quadratic). Dietary Cr levels increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, the total antioxidant capacity linearly and quadratically (P < 0.05). A linear and quadratic (P < 0.05) decrease of the malondialdehyde concentrations in response to dietary Cr level was observed. These results indicated that dietary supplementation of Cr as chromium propionate, particularly at 800 µg/kg could beneficially affect the laying rate, egg quality and antioxidant function, as well as modulate the blood biochemical parameters of laying ducks under heat stress conditions.

RESUMO

Objective: The clinical characteristics of patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma-diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PCNSL-DLBCL) and the effects of different treatment schemes on their survival and prognosis were analyzed retrospectively. Methods: A total of 49 patients with PCNSL-DLBCL who presented at the Tianjin Medical University General Hospital from July 2014 to December 2020 were included, and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. They were divided into four groups: the MTX group, the R-CDOP group, the BTKi-R-MTX group, and the RLZT group. The median overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were calculated, and the survival prognosis was compared by univariate and multivariate prognostic analysis. Results: The median OS time of the MTX group, the R-CDOP group, the BTKi-R-MTX group, and the RLZT group was 16.5 months, 4.5 months, 42 months, and not reached, respectively (P<0.001) . The median PFS time of the MTX group, the R-CDOP group, the BTKi-R-MTX group, and the RLZT group was 7 months, 1.5 months, 20 months, and 5 months, respectively (P=0.005) . Multivariate prognostic analysis showed that double expressor lymphoma, IESLG risk grade, and different treatment methods were the prognostic factors of PCNSL-DLBCL. Conclusion: The survival and prognosis of PCNSL-DLBCL are affected by different treatment schemes. The role of CD20 monoclonal antibody in the treatment of PCNSL-DLBCL is still controversial. The treatment scheme containing BTKi has great potential for PCNSL-DLBCL. RLZT scheme has a good prospect for elderly patients who cannot tolerate high-dose chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

RESUMO

Objective: To explore the application effect of sustainable skin-stretching device in scalp and soft tissue defect. Methods: From June 2017 to January 2020, 5 patients (3 males and 2 females, aged 31-57 (38.0±2.1) years) with large area of scalp and soft tissue defect and skull exposure were admitted to Department of Reparative and Reconstructive Surgery of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University. The wound area ranged from 16.0 cm×8.0 cm to 18.0 cm×12.0 cm. The sustainable skin-stretching device was installed after debridement operation for scalp wound. The wound was stretched from the 3rd day after installation of the device, at a basic speed of 1 mm/d and finished for 3 times on average. During stretching, close attention was paid to the changes in blood flow of the wound margin and the subjective feeling of the patients. When the result was negative in the squeezing and pinching test for wound margin after stretching, the further stretching was stopped, the final stretching state was maintained for 3 days, and the wounds were sutured directly. The wound healing during stretching of sustainable skin-stretching device and the occurrence of complications were observed. The rest wound areas after stretching for 5, 10, 15, and 20 days were measured. The wound healing and hair growth were observed during follow-up. Results: All the wounds of 5 patients was sutured directly after stretching for 19-23 d. There was no tension blister on the margin of wounds during stretching, and the margin of wounds healed well after being sutured without skin necrosis. After stretching treatment for 5-20 d, the wound areas were gradually decreased. During follow-up of 2-11 (4.5±1.5) months, the elasticity, color, feeling, and regenerated hair growth of the stretched scalp tissue were close to those of the surrounding normal skin tissue. The linear scar formed on the margin of wounds, but no scar formed on the wounds. Conclusions: The application of sustainable skin-stretching device can reduce the difficulty in repairing scalp and soft tissue defect, with the regenerated hair growing well after treatment, which is worthy of clinical promotion.

RESUMO

Since the recognition of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs)-induced cough, drug has been considered as a potential cause of chronic cough. This review presents recent knowledge on drug-induced coughs in patients with chronic cough. The focus is placed on ACEIs, for which there are a multitude of studies documenting their associations with cough. Additional drugs are discussed for which there are reports of cough as a side effect of treatment, and the potential mechanisms of these effects are discussed.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the correlation between serum bilirubin and cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Methods: A total of 369 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were hospitalized at the Department of Endocrinology, Nanjing Jinling Hospital from April 2017 to October 2018 were enrolled, including 226 males and 143 females, with an average age of (54.6±12.1) years. According to cardiovascular reflex tests (CARTs), all the patients were divided into Non CAN group(149 patients without CAN) and CAN group (220 patients complicated with CAN). The difference of serum bilirubin levels between the two groups was compared. The differences of CARTs and the incidence of CAN were compared by tertiles of serum bilirubin levels. The binary logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors for diabetic cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy. Results: The serum total bilirubin [(9.28±2.74) µmol/L vs (11.08±2.98) µmol/L, P<0.001], direct bilirubin [(3.17±1.20) µmol/L vs (3.71±1.24) µmol/L, P<0.001] and indirect bilirubin levels [(6.11±1.89) µmol/L vs (7.37±2.10) µmol/L, P<0.001] in CAN group were significantly lower than that in Non CAN group. With the increase of serum bilirubin, the incidence of CAN decreased (P<0.01). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that serum total bilirubin (OR=0.819, 95%CI: 0.744-0.901, P<0.001), direct bilirubin (OR=0.739, 95%CI: 0.601-0.908, P=0.004) and indirect bilirubin (OR=0.749, 95%CI: 0.653-0.860, P<0.001) were inversely correlated with the incidence of CAN. Conclusions: Within the physiological range, lower level of serum bilirubin is inversely correlated with the incidence of CAN. It is noteworthy to screen diabetic cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had a lower serum bilirubin level.

RESUMO

AIMS: The purpose of this research was to determine optimum conditions for broth recovery of heat-injured Salmonella Typhimurium and Escherichia coli O157:H7. METHODS AND RESULTS: Exposure to 55°C for 15 and 25 min, respectively, induced cellular injury to those pathogens. Comparison was made with the commonly used overlay method using selective medium for recovering sublethally injured cells of S. Typhimurium. For E. coli O157:H7, phenol red agar base with 1% sorbitol was used. After cell suspensions were heated at 55°C for selected time intervals, microbes were 10-fold diluted with brain heart infusion (BHI), tryptic soy broth (TSB) and TSB with 0·6% yeast extract (TSBYE) and incubated at 37°C for up to 3 h. At hourly intervals, diluents were plated onto selective medium for recovery. Simultaneously, diluents were plated onto tryptic soy agar (TSA) for recovery of sublethally injured cells. For overlays, diluents were plated onto TSA and overlaid with selective agar after a resuscitation interval. Broth recovery conditions for S. Typhimurium and E. coli O157:H7 were determined to be 1 h in any of the following broth media: BHI, TSB or TSBYE. When liquid resuscitation was applied to sublethally injured cells in food samples (milk), 1 h was also sufficient time for recovery. CONCLUSIONS: The broth recovery method is a convenient alternative to conventional recovery methods. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Cells sublethally injured by control interventions might not grow on selective medium because they have no resistance to several selective compounds. However, injured cells can recuperate and multiply under conditions sufficient for recovery. To repair and detect heat-injured cells, the overlay method is commonly used but this method has some limitations. This study confirms the effectiveness of liquid resuscitation method on recovery of injured cells. The broth recovery can replace the overlay method due to greater convenience and timesaving.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the efficacy of gamma irradiation to inactivate food-borne pathogens on pistachios (Pistacia vera L.). Pistachios inoculated with Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes were subjected to gamma irradiation in the range of 0, 0·5, 1, 3 and 5 kGy, and colour change was evaluated after treatment and during storage at room temperature. Pathogen populations decreased with increasing treatment doses. A gamma irradiation dose of 5 kGy decreased the three pathogens on pistachios to under the detection limit (1·0 log CFU per g) without effecting colour change. During storage following treatment, pathogens were reduced due to the postirradiation effect. D-values of pathogens on pistachios showed that L. monocytogenes was more resistant to gamma irradiation than was E. coli O157:H7 or S. Typhimurium. During gamma irradiation treatment, L, a and b values of pistachios did not significantly change but these values changed during storage. These results show that gamma irradiation has potential as a nonthermal process for inactivating food-borne pathogens in pistachios without inducing colour changes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Generally, nuts have lower water activity which precludes the growth of food-borne pathogens. But, food-borne outbreaks due to pathogen-contaminated nuts have been reported in the last few decades. Pistachios are one of the most popular nuts and have many health beneficial effects. However, many pasteurization interventions have been used to reduce pathogens on pistachios, but most of them are not effective. This study confirms the effectiveness of gamma irradiation on pasteurization of pistachios. This may be helpful in nut processing industries to ensure the microbial safety of nuts.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of polysaccharide from Phellinus igniarius (PPI) in the improvement of oxidative stress, hepatic granuloma and hepatic fibrosis in Schistosoma japonicum-iniected in mice. METHODS: The mouse model of schistosomiasis was established by S. japonicum cercariae infection via the abdomen. Balb/c mice were randomly assigned into 5 groups, including the healthy control group (Group A), infection control group (Group B), PPI treatment group (Group C), praziquantel treatment group (Group D) and PPI-praziquantel combination group (Group E), of 10 mice in each group. Each mouse in groups B, C, D and E was infected with (30 ± 2) S. japonicum cercariae. Then, mice in groups D and E were given praziquantel by gavage at a dose of 500 mg/kg for successive two days on day 42 post-infection, while mice in groups C and E were given PPI by gavage at a dose of 400 mg/kg for successive 30 days on day 42 post-infection. Histopathological changes of hepatic tissues were observed using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), hyaluronic acid (HA), laminin (LN) were determined, while the activities of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), glutathione reductase (GSH-R) and glutathione (GSH) were detected in Mouse liver homogenates. The expression of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß) and alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was quantified in hepatic tissues using immunohistochemistry, and the Nrf2 and Gsta4 gene expression was quantified using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay. RESULTS: Untreated mice presented typical pathological changes of schistosomal hepatic disorders, while PPI treatment effectively alleviated hepatic egg granulomas and collagen deposition. S. japonicum infection resulted in aggravation of hepatic lipid peroxidation, induction of oxidative stress, elevated serum MDA level and a reduction in the activity of GSH and antioxidant enzymes activities in mice. As compared to infected but untreated mice, PPI treatment suppressed hepatic lipid peroxidation, increased the GSH activity and restored the activity of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, PPI treatment inhibited the TGF-ß signaling pathway and up-regulated the Nrf2 and Gsta4 gene expression. CONCLUSIONS: PPI plays a critical role in the treatment of schistosomiasis-induced hepatic fibrosis. It may improve oxidative stress damages through up-regulating Nrf2 and Gsta4 gene expression, thereby suppressing the development of hepatic egg granulomas and hepatic fibrosis.

RESUMO

Wu Jinshou()[(1785-1795)-(1844-1851)]once wanted to take the imperial examination, but in late Qing Dynasty, under the depressed situation of economics and politics, he was trapped in countryside as many lower intellectuals, and chose medicine as another way to earn a living. In fact, he was both a doctor and a literatus. He kept friends with scholars, such as Zhang Tingji, Yao Wentian, Lu Changchun, Wei Guangfu, and scholar-physicians like Chen XIshu, Lu zeng and also Xu Jin's family, famous doctors at that time. He changed status Flexibly. To some extent, he represented the basic appearance of the traditional Chinese practitioner. In Daoguang 11 years(1831), Wu Jinshou published Medincal Cases Records of Three physicians(《》), Yi Xiao Mi Chuan(《》), Wen Re Zhui Yan(《》). This naturally have business purpose and was market-oriented. He had influenced on the spread of Wuzhong(the name of Suzhou and its surrounding area in Ming and Qing Dynasty) medical books, and provided some topics to the study of the Wenbing academic history.

RESUMO

The shape of the earlobes has a variety of genetic significance. This study analyzed the frequencies of the earlobe shapes in the Korean population. Data were collected on randomly selected 500 males and 500 females in Daegu Metropolitan City, with all participant ages being in their twenties. Obtuse angled earlobes accounted for 41.2% of the earlobes observed, while acute angled earlobes prevalence was calculated at 38.8% and right angled earlobe was 20.0% of the total (sexes combined). In men, the acute angled earlobe was the most frequent type (43.0%), while the obtuse angled earlobe was the most frequent type in females (45.2%). These differences were statistically significant (p = 0.015). Overall, attached type earlobe (61.2%) was more frequent than free type earlobe. The attached type earlobe was more common in both sex groups (57.0% in male and 65.4% in female), and the proportion was significantly higher for females (p = 0.006). In conclusion, the findings in this study suggest that the attached earlobe type is the most common among Koreans, and the proportion of earlobe types among males and females is significantly different. Further studies are needed to understand the genetic background of earlobe types among Koreans.

RESUMO

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a cancer treatment tool that focuses ultrasound energy on tumor tissues, which initiates necrosis via heat and mechanical effects. The efficacy of veterinary HIFU (vHIFU) was evaluated for the treatment of solid tumors in dogs. Data from 11 client-owned dogs with various solid tumors treated by vHIFU between 2013 and 2017 were retrospectively evaluated. Ten of the 11 dogs were followed up; clinical signs were alleviated in five. Four dogs exhibited a decrease in tumor size, and bleeding stopped in all four dogs with hemorrhagic tumors. Side effects included hyperthermia or erythema on the application site, enteritis, and skin ulcerations. These results suggest that vHIFU could be used as an alternative cancer treatment for dogs with solid tumors.

RESUMO

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a broad spectrum incoherent light which is produced by high-output xenon lamp. Since the invention of the first-generation IPL in 1994, IPL technology has been developing rapidly and extensively utilized in multiple fields relevant to dermatology across the world. In 2004, the fourth-generation IPL system was introduced with the optimal pulse technology (OPT) and has soon been used for cosmetic purposes all over the world. In 2002, Dr. Toyos found that the meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and dye eye disease (DED)symptoms of the rosacea patients who received IPL treatment have been improving significantly, therefore he started to explore the application of IPL system to treatment of dry eye disease. Several recent clinical studies have demonstrated the therapeutic potential of IPL for improving the symptoms and signs of MGD and DED. However, the published data of IPL treatment for MGD and DED is limited, the mechanism of IPL treatment for MGD and DED remained unclear and more relevant researches needed to be done in the future. This article discusses the clinical application history and general mechanism of IPL, and introduces the treatment of IPL for MGD and DED. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2018, 54: 140-143).
