RESUMO

Both physicochemical and biological factors affect the degree of metal accumulation in crayfish tissues. The content of metals and correlations between the metal concentrations in different tissues and the total length of crayfish is suitable indicators of contamination of the aquatic environment. The aim of the study was to analyse the effect of age and sex of crayfish on the degree of accumulation of Ca, Cu, and Zn in the muscle and exoskeleton. A total of 100 individuals of the spiny-cheek crayfish (Faxonius limosus, Rafinesque, 1817) were caught from Glowinsk reservoir (Poland) in October 2019 using fyke nets. Metal concentrations were determined in freeze-dried samples of the abdominal muscle, exoskeleton, bottom sediment, and water using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Here, we show that the highest concentrations of Zn were found in the muscle of 4-year-old females, Cu in 3-year-old males, and Ca in 4-year-old males. Sex was a significant factor affecting the content of Ca in the muscle and Zn in the exoskeleton. Age was a significant factor affecting the content of Zn, Cu, and Ca in the muscle and Zn and Cu in the exoskeleton. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of Zn and Cu in the muscle and exoskeleton of spiny-cheek crayfish was much higher from water than from sediments, unlike Ca. Furthermore, we found significant correlation for muscle between Zn and total length in 3-year-old females and 4-year-old males and between Cu and TL in 3-year-old males. Analysing the recommended daily intake (RDI) for the investigated minerals confirmed that the consumption of 100 g of spiny-cheek crayfish muscle could meet daily requirement for Zn up to 27.5%, for Ca in 12.4%, and over 100% for Cu. The conducted analyses confirmed that the consumption of crayfish meat was safe for the health of potential consumers in terms of the analysed metal content.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether injecting synbiotics to the egg air chamber on d 12 of embryo incubation will affect the processes of angiogenesis, and thus the share of histopathological changes in superficial pectoral muscle, as well as Ca and P in blood of 42-day-old broiler chickens. The eggs containing viable embryos were injected with 0.2 mL suspension of 1/physiological saline, 2/SYN1 composed of galactooligosaccharide (GOS) (trade name: Bi2tos®, Clasado Biosciences Ltd, UK) and L. salivarius or 3/SYN2 composed of RFO and L. plantarum. All birds were fed ad libitum the standard commercial feed mixtures: starter, grower, and finisher, with a constant access to water and feed. Injecting synbiotics in ovo on d 12 of the embryonal development significantly affected the blood supply to superficial breast muscle in broiler chickens. The highest density of capillaries in the muscle area under study and per muscle fiber were identified in the group of birds the egg air chamber of which was provided with synbiotic GOS+L. salivarius. Consequently, for the muscles of the birds injected with the same synbiotic there was found the highest share of normal fibers and least necrosis and splitting, as compared with the control. The conducted research confirms the relationship between the blood supply to the muscle and the occurrence of pathological changes. We have observed a positive effect of synbiotics on the microvascularization and the size of histopathological changes in the chicken muscle, which, from a practical perspective, can affect the health status and the meat quality. Blood biochemical analyses showed that the in ovo injection of synbiotics did not significantly affect the level of parameters, except for Ca and P. A significant increase in the concentration of these minerals in the blood of chickens injected with SYN1 could have a positive effect on the angiogenesis process.

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) is a dominant fish species in aquaculture, and as it is a stomachless species, absorption and digestion of nutrients take place in the intestine. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of a prebiotic on the content of selected minerals found in the meat, gills, and skeleton of common carp. The research applied trans-galactooligosaccharide (GOS) prebiotic produced by enzymatic transgalactosylation of milk lactose by whole cells of Bifidobacterium bifidum. The following diets have been applied: control diet without feed additives (C), diet 2 (B1) with 1% of GOS, and diet 3 (B2) with 2% of GOS. In the freeze-dried samples, concentrations of the analyzed metals were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The content of phosphorus was determined using colorimetric method. The analyses confirmed that the highest level of Mg was detected in the skeleton of fish fed with 1% GOS (2.51 g kg-1) and was significantly higher compared the control treatment (2.11 g kg-1) (P < 0.05). Zn content in fish meat fed with 1% GOS (35.41 mg kg-1) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in the control group (24.59 mg kg-1). The tissue that accumulated the greatest amount of Zn was the gills. GOS had a positive effect on Fe accumulation in the meat, gills, and skeleton. It has been concluded that supplementation of feed with 2% GOS significantly influenced the positive correlations between Mg and P in the meat and skeleton, Fe-Ca correlation in gills, and Fe-Zn correlation in the skeleton.

: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of a trans-galactooligosaccharide prebiotic (GOS) on the growth performance, biochemical blood parameters, and intestine morphometric parameters of common carp. The 60-day-long experiment was performed on one-year-old fish with a mean body weight of 180 g (±5 g). Three diets were used: control diet 1 (C) with no microbiota affecting feed additives, diet 2 (B1) with 1% of prebiotic, and diet 3 (B2) with 2% of prebiotic, in four replications (tanks) per treatment and 25 fish per tank. At the end of the trial, 16 individuals from each group were used for analyses. The study showed that GOS supplementation did not affect growth performance. In turn, the prebiotic had a positive effect on the development of the intestine, and increased the height, width, and surface of the villi in B1 and B2 groups. The content of phosphorus (P) was significantly higher in B1 group compared with B2 group, which indicated that 1% addition of prebiotic causes better absorption of P from the intestine. The other biochemical indicators-namely lipid, protein and hepatic parameters, insulin, and Ca-were not affected by GOS treatment, which may indicate similar metabolic balance of fish in each experimental group. Serum triiodothyronine (TT3) and glucose (stress markers) concentrations were not significantly different among treatments groups. GOS may be recommended as a feed additive for common carp due to its positive effects on fish physiology and development of the gastrointestinal tract. However, our results suggest that 1% diet supplementation causes satisfactory reactions for the abovementioned aspects in comparison to control or 2% supplementation.

The aim was to investigate the impact of an automatic in ovo injection of the raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFO) extracted from the seeds of Lupinus luteus L, on the chicken performance and resistance in a production environment. At day 12 of incubation, a total of 57,900 eggs (Ross 308) were divided into two groups: 1/ Control, injected with 0.9% NaCl and 2/ RFO group, injected with 1.9 mg/egg of the lupin seed extract, dissolved in 0.2 mL NaCl. The performance parameters, biochemical indices (lipid profile, hepatic parameters), gut histomorphology and duodenum structure, oxidative stability of the meat and microbiological counts of the major commensal microbiota species were analyzed. Mortality, body weight, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were not affected. By day 42, several health indices were improved with RFO and were reflected in a beneficial lipid blood profile, increased villi surface and better combating opportunistic pathogens through reduction of Clostridia and decreased coccidia counts. The RFO increased meat oxidation, but only at the beginning of the storage. The RFO sourced from local legumes can be considered a promising prebiotic for broiler chickens. In ovo delivery of prebiotics and/or synbiotics should be further optimized as an important strategy for the earliest possible modulation of chicken resistance.

The aim of this study was to examine fertility of spiny-cheek crayfish harvested in the first half of April from the Vistula Lagoon and to compare it with that of the crayfish from freshwater habitats. The sample consisted of 47 sexually mature females shortly before they were ready to lay eggs. After determining the absolute fertility (number of eggs per ovary), the relative fertility was calculated (number of eggs per 1 g of body weight). Absolute and relative fertility of spiny-cheek crayfish females with total body length 8.1-11.6 cm was 535 and 17 eggs, respectively. Absolute and relative fertility was correlated with total body length and weight. Along with the increase in these parameters, the absolute fertility increased and the relative fertility decreased. A comparison of absolute and relative fertility of spiny-cheek crayfish from the Vistula Lagoon with the representatives of this species from freshwater habitats such as the Brda River and the Lake Dgal Wielki, showed no significant differences.

The aim of the present work was to assess the concentrations of metals in the abdominal muscle and exoskeleton of 3-year-old males and 4-year-old females and males of spiny-cheek crayfish (Orconectes limosus) collected from Lake Goplo. A total of 93 males and 35 females were collected in autumn (October 2014). The analyzes of heavy metals were conducted by means of atomic absorption spectroscopy with a PU9100X spectrometer. The content of mercury was determined using AMA 254 mercury analyser. As analyses indicated heavy metals accumulated in the muscle and exoskeleton in the following sequence: Zn > Cu > Pb > Mn > Ni > Hg and Mn > Pb > Zn > Ni > Cu > Hg, respectively. Statistically significant differences between 3- and 4-year-old males were found for all analyzed metals. Gender dependent differences were calculated only for Ni in the muscle tissue and for Mn and Hg in the exoskeleton. In comparison with the study carried out 2 years ago notably higher concentrations of Pb were found in the muscle and a higher content of Zn, Pb, Mn and Ni was determined in the exoskeleton.

The aim of the research was to determine the effect of the season and the breeding region on the content of selected minerals (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb, Cd) in the hair of dairy cows. The research material covered 114 Holstein-Friesian breed cows from three breeding centres in Poland, hereafterreferred to as A, B and C. Breeding centre A is located in Opolskie province, breeding centre B in Podlaskie province and breeding centre C in Kujawsko-Pomorskie province. The cows were kept in freestanding cowsheds with den boxes. Animal nutrition involved the use of the TMR system, considering division into nutrition groups. Hair was sampled in summer and in the period of winter and spring from the side of the body, directly behind the coastal arch. The Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe analysis was performed with atomic absorption spectrometry. The Pb and Cd content was assayed with the use of the electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The results demonstrated the effect of season and breeding region on the level of the minerals and heavy metals assayed in the hair of cows being in the period of drying-off. The hair sampled in winter from cows from C demonstrated a higher concentration of most elements except for Fe than in material derived in summer. Hair sampled in winter from cows from the B centre showed higher Zn, Cu and Pb concentrations as compared with summer. Higher Cu, Mn, Fe and Pb concentrations were determined in hair sampled during winter from cows from A than in the material obtained in summer. The Cd content in the cow hair did not exceed the admissible norm, however, normal levels were exceeded for Pb in hair sampled in winter from cows from breeding centre C.

The aim of this study was to determine fat and cholesterol content and the fatty acid profile in the meat of roach (Rutilus rutilus L.). Muscle samples for analyses were taken from the large side muscle of the fish body above the lateral line. The study involved 56 individuals caught in fall and spring. Analyses were carried out on 14 females and 14 males caught in each season. The percentage content of fat in the fish meat was determined with the modified method of FOLCH et al. (1957). The cholesterol content was determined with the modified Liebermann-Burchardt colorimetric method using a Shimadzu spectrophotometer (UV-VIS-NIR-3100). The fatty acid profile was determined with the gas chromatograph with a flame-ionization detector. Analyses indicated that the percentage content of fat was higher in the meat of roach caught in autumn (0.96% in females and 0.91% in males) than in the tissues of individuals from spring, which was 0.67% and 0.86%, respectively. The content of the total cholesterol was higher in autumn (64.17 mg 100g(-1)) than in spring (56.25 mg 100g(-1)), and these values significantly differed (p < 0.05). Statistical analyses indicated that there were no significant differences in the content of fat and cholesterol between females and males caught in both seasons. The total amounts of SFA, MUFA and PUFA ranged from 30.05% to 33.57%, from 39.53% to 47.64% and from 19.96% to 27.42%, respectively. Analyses of correlations between fatty acids from the n-3 and n-6 group indicated a positive and statistically significant relationship between C20:4 n-6 and C22:4 n-6 (p = 0.000, R = 0.9065) and C20:5 n-3 and C22:6 n-3 (p = 0.000, r = 0.8555). The ratio of n-3/n-6 was highest in the meat of roach caught in spring (0.50-0.81) than in autumn (0.50-0.77). The AI index ranged from 0.35 to 0.46 and the mean values of TI ranged from 0.41 to 0.54.

The aim of this work was to compare the concentrations of calcium and phosphorus and Ca/P ratio in the meat of females and males of the roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) caught from the Brda River. The study involved 40 roach individuals caught in fall and spring (10 females and 10 males from each season). The muscle samples for analyses were taken from the large side muscle of the fish body above the lateral line. Ca concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry; P content was analyzed by the colorimetric method. Calcium concentration in the meat of analysed roach was higher in samples collected from fish caught in spring and equaled 1.82 g kg(-1) in females and 1.93 g kg(-1) in males. Values for individuals from autumn amounted to 0.83 and 1.10 g kg(-1), respectively. Statistically significant differences in calcium content were detected between individuals caught in different seasons, but samples taken from females and males caught within one season did not differ substantially. The mean value of P in the meat of analysed roach caught in spring was higher than in fish from autumn, and it was respectively 2.24 g kg(-1) in females and 2.30 g kg(-1) in males from spring, and 1.89 g kg(-1) in the tissue of females and 2.01 g kg(-1) in males in fish from autumn. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus in the meat of analysed wild roach ranged from 0.43:1 to 0.82:1. A negative and statistically significant correlation between Ca and P concentrations was found in the meat and the body length of analysed roach from the Brda River.
