[Incorrect caloric-nitrogen composition of parenteral nutrition solutions as a factor for causing liver damage--an animal model]. / Nieprawidlowy sklad kaloryczno-azotowy roztworów do odzywiania pozajelitowego jako czynnik wywolujacy uszkodzenie watroby--model zwierzecy.

The experiment were carried out on 40, 3-week old rats who received solutions of aminoacids, glucose, fat, electrolytes, trace elements and vitamins. The ratio of non-protein calories to grams of nitrogen was: Group I-75:1, Group II-200:1, Group III-500:1. Control Group IV was on standard Murigan chow. The analysis included the following parameters: body mass, serum albumin concentration, GOT, GPT and ECH, and microscopic liver studies. The results show that body mass increases in Group I-III (7.5 g, SD 2.18; 1.45 g, SD 2.33; 1.85 g, SD 1.56 respectively) were significantly lower when compared to the controls (11.6 g, SD 2.72), with p < 0.001. Blood serum albumin concentration values were lower in Group I, II and III, and transaminase activity was elevated in comparison to the controls. Histological analysis showed mitochondrial damage and parenchymal degeneration with proliferation of Browicz-Kupfer cells in Group I and III animals, and no structural hepatic changes in Group II and in the controls. The results suggest a relationship between the above disturbances and the composition of the administrated solutions.

Disturbances of mineral metabolism in teeth of rats receiving corticosteroids for 3 generations.

Distribution of calcium and phosphorus was investigated with quantitative and qualitative methods in teeth of rats chronically treated with low doses of corticosteroids for 3 generations. In animals from 2nd and 3rd generation, scanning electron microscopy revealed focal lesions in enamel and dentin. The disturbances of the mineral metabolism in teeth of corticosteroid-treated rats were also reflected by abnormal calcium and phosphorus content in enamel and dentin, as assessed by X-ray microanalysis.

Interaction of elastase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa with polymorphonuclear leukocytes and serum.

Interaction of elastase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa 700/75 with polymorphonuclear leukocytes and serum was tested. No difference in phagocytosis by elastase treated PMN and control PMN was noted. Bactericidal activity of serum against P. aeruginosa 700/75 was reduced when serum preincubated with elastase.

Synthesis and secretion of some plasma proteins by tissue slices of Morris hepatoma 7777 and liver from control and turpentine-injected rats.

Slices of Morris hepatoma 7777 or rat liver isolated from control or turpentine-injected rats were incubated for 2 h with 14C-leucine. Radioactivities incorporated into albumin, alpha-fetoprotein, fibrinogen, alpha 1-AP-globulin, haptoglobin and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein were determined after the proteins had been isolated from the incubation medium or tissue homogenate by immunoprecipitation with monospecific antisera. It was found that hepatoma synthesizes fibrinogen, alpha 1-AP-globulin and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein in the amounts comparable to rat liver, whereas formation of albumin and haptoglobin is reduced 5- to 10-fold. Local inflammation elicited by injection of turpentine to tissue donors increased formation of acute-phase protein in liver slices but had no effect on synthesis of these proteins in preparations of Morris hepatoma, although certain ultrastructural changes in the Golgi complex were observed not only in the liver but also in the tumour.
