Background and study aims: A correct agonist -antagonist strength relationship for shoulder external and internal rotation is necessary for functional stability of the shoulder. This strength relationship is described by the ratio of external to internal strength (ER/IR).The aim of this stydy is to produce comparative data as regards the ER/IR ratio in subjects with different non-traumatic rotator cuff diseases. Design and setting: A cross-sectional study in an outpatient clinic in a tertiary care university hospital. Methods: In 55 subjects with rotator cuff disease (confirmed by physical examination and assessed by ultrasound and magnetic resonance arthrography), the ER/IR ratio of the shoulder was isometrically measured with a hand-held dynamometer and compared with values pertaining to the unaffected shoulder of the same individuals. Results: The mean ER/IR values in the overall group were 0.89 (SD 0.18) and 0.94 (SD 0.22) for the affected and unaffected shoulders, respectively. The ratio was 0.87 (SD 0.23) in patients with subdeltoid bursitis, 0.88 (SD 0.16) in rotator cuff tendinopathy and 0.87 (SD 0.22) in patients with rotator cuff tears. Conclusions: The ER/IR ratio appears to be similar between the affected and unaffected shoulders of subjects with nontraumatic cuff pathologies.

OBJECTIVE: Collection and meta-analysis of all relevant anatomical studies related to the pubic symphysis to provide a state of the art review of its musculotendinous and ligamentous attachments from 2010 to date. METHODS: A systematic search of published literature databases (PubMed, Web of Science and Embase) was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines from January 2010 up until now. All papers investigating the anatomy of the musculotendinous attachments of the pubis and the pubic ligaments were eligible. Methodological quality was assessed using the Quality Appraisal for Cadaveric Studies (QUACS scale). A narrative analysis approach was adopted to synthesize the findings. RESULTS: After screening and review of 1313 papers, a total of six studies investigating the anatomy of the pubic ligaments and tendons were included. Of the six articles included in this systematic review, five articles performed a macroscopic anatomical dissection, three articles performed a microscopic (histological) study, and one article combined microscopic examination with an MRI imaging examination. The anatomy of the pubic symphysis was examined in 76 anatomical cadavers (60 embalmed, 16 fresh frozen). In total 44 male cadavers (58%), 28 female cadavers (37%) and four cadavers whose gender was not stated were dissected. CONCLUSION: The age-old accepted concept of the fusion of the rectus abdominis with the adductor longus via the aponeurotic plate is outdated. New anatomical concepts like the pyramidalis-anterior pubic ligament-adductor longus complex (PLAC), recto-gracilis tendon, fusion of adductor brevis with gracilis, etc. are recently introduced. The awareness of anatomy and morphology of the pubic ligaments plays a significant role in understanding the diagnosis and treatment of groin pain.

RESUMO

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), compression of the median nerve lying deep under the flexor retinaculum, is the most common entrapment neuropathy of the upper limb. After a failure of conservative treatments, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and splinting, interventional techniques are required. Hydrodissection is an injection technique that separates the nerve from the surrounding tissue. Although this technique is gaining ground in modern medicine, the state-of-the-art literature is lacking a clear protocol or approach for hydrodissection for CTS. In this article, we describe a safe, minimally invasive, effective, and easy-to-use ultrasound-guided hydrodissection technique for CTS.

BACKGROUND: For patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP), exercise therapy is stated to be the most effective intervention strategy but it is unclear which kind of exercise therapy is most beneficial. OBJECTIVE: To identify preliminary prognostic indicators that predict outcome for exercise therapy in patients with nonspecific CLBP. METHODS: Patients were recruited in two hospitals and received 18 intervention sessions: stabilization therapy, isometric training therapy or a combination therapy. The primary outcome measure was the change in the Modified Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire after nine weeks. RESULTS: A total of 59 patients completed the study which represents a statistical power of 90%. In total, 30 patients were categorized as having treatment success and 29 as treatment failure. After using regression analyses to determine the association between standardized examination variables and treatment response status, prognostic indicators were identified for predicting therapy success (positive likelihood ratio [LR], 3.8) and failure (negative LR, 0.19). CONCLUSIONS: The most important variables were the prone instability test, pelvic tilt test, straight leg raise, body weight, visual analogue scale and the short form 36 health survey.

OBJECTIVE: It is recommended that cancer survivors incorporate physical activity into their daily lives after in-hospital rehabilitation. However, there is a lack of training programmes focusing on the specific needs of cancer survivors. TriaGO! - an 8-month intervention study of aerobic endurance training for cancer survivors - was therefore examined. The training programme aims to meet the participants' physical needs and provide socio-emotional support, in the form of an exercise programme that challenges participants to aim to compete in an Olympic- distance triathlon (1,000 m swimming, 45 km cycling, 10 km running) after 8 months' of training. METHODS: The TriaGO! training programme was provided to in-hospital rehabilitated cancer survivors (n = 12). Each patient invited a healthy friend or family member to train with them (a so called buddy (n = 12)). The 8-month programme involves supervised training sessions, combining cycling, swimming and running, which progress in frequency, duration and intensity. Physical health was measured at the start, 4 and 8 months, using objective parameters of aerobic fitness, muscular fitness and body composition. RESULTS: A total of 22 out of 24 participants successfully completed the training programme and the triathlon. Both the cancer survivors and their buddies showed significant improvements in physical health. Cancer survivors showed improvements in aerobic fitness, as increases in VO2max and VO2peak of 5.5 ml.kg-1.min-1 and 0.26 ml.min-1 respectively (p <0.0001). Buddies underwent similar significant increases; 5.39 ml.kg-1.min-1 and 0.18 ml.min-1, respectively. CONCLUSION: The TriaGO! training programme introduces the concept of supervised endurance training for cancer survivors. Through measurement of ob-jective parameters, this study demonstrated that significant physical reconditioning is possible in cancer survivors. A supervised programme would be recommended for all cancer patients after in-hospital treatment, in order to facilitate the transition to incorporation of physical activity into daily life.

BACKGROUND: Up until now, assessment of physical functioning in patients with low back pain is mostly completed with the use of patient reported outcome measurements (PROMs). There are however limitations to the use of these measurements such as inaccuracies due to recall bias, social desirability bias and errors in self-observation. A recent review indicated seven clinical tests as having good test retest reliability. These tests can now be further investigated for their validity. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the convergent validity of seven clinical tests (extensor endurance, flexor endurance, 5 minute walking, 50 foot walking, shuttle walk, sit to stand and the loaded forward reach test) in patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP). METHODS: Patients filled in a series of PROMs and performed all included clinical tests during a specific test moment. Convergent validity was firstly investigated by assessing Pearson correlations between the seven included clinical tests and secondly by assessing the correlations between the predefined PROMs and the clinical tests. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients were included in this study representing a power of 84%. The best overall evidence for convergent validity could be identified for the extensor endurance, sit to stand and the loaded forward reach test. However, when all study results were combined, evidence for convergent validity was found for all included clinical tests except for the shuttle walk test. CONCLUSION: The current study was able to provide evidence that multimethod and multidimensional approaches should be used as a more comprehensive assessment of physical function in patients with nonspecific CLBP.

A case report is presented that gives new insight into a very rare cause of athletic pubalgia. Up till now, no case has been published in literature about the relevance of an arcuate pubic ligament (APL) injury in athletic pubalgia. The APL or inferior pubic ligament is a thick triangular arch of ligamentous fibers connecting the 2 pubic bones below. The main function of the APL is to stabilize the symphysis pubis. The rupture of this ligament can lead to groin pain due to lack of stabilization of the symphysis pubis. Despite the importance of the anatomical and clinical function of the APL, very limited research is available about injuries of this ligament. This report describes a case of a traumatic left APL rupture, confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging, causing longstanding left groin pain in an amateur athlete.

BACKGROUND: Data documenting BMD in pre-professional adolescent ballet dancers is limited. This cross-sectional study assesses bone mineral density (BMD) in young adolescent elite ballet dancers and compares BMD values between males and females (with and without normal menarche) and body composition between dancers with and without low Z-score. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of third year ballet students (female=23; male=15; mean age 14.7 years; SD: 0.5) of The Royal Ballet School of Antwerp (Belgium) training 22 hours a week. They completed questionnaires and underwent dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to measure BMD and body composition. Each female participant completed questionnaires assessing menstrual status. RESULTS: DXA revealed that 12 out of 38 (32%) of the dancers had Z-score <-1. On average, male dancers had a lower BMD compared to an age-matched reference population (mean Z-score -0.9; SD 0.5), with 7 out of 15 having Z-score <-1. Overall, absolute BMD values were highest in the legs, followed by spine and arms. Dancers with Z-score <-1 had a significantly lower total mass. 43% of female ballet dancers had not yet had their first period and 39% had oligomenorrhea, but no significant differences between groups was detected. CONCLUSIONS: A third of adolescent elite ballet dancers had low to very low Z-score. Nearly 2 out of 3 dancers with a Z-score <-1 were males, showing that low BMD is not limited to female dancers. Among female dancers menstrual dysfunction was frequent, without apparent impact on BMD or body composition in the studied age group.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood problems. Recently, occipital nerve field stimulation (ONS) has been proposed as an effective potential treatment for fibromyalgia-related pain. The aim of this study is to unravel the neural mechanism behind occipital nerve stimulation's ability to suppress pain in fibromyalgia patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven patients implanted with subcutaneous electrodes in the C2 dermatoma were enrolled for a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) H215O activation study. These seven patients were selected from a cohort of 40 patients who were part of a double blind, placebo-controlled study followed by an open label follow up at six months. The H215O PET scans were taken during both the "ON" (active stimulation) and "OFF" (stimulating device turned off) conditions. Electroencephalogram (EEG) data were also recorded for the implanted fibromyalgia patients during both the "ON" and "OFF" conditions. RESULTS: Relative to the "OFF" condition, ONS stimulation resulted in activation in the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, comprising the medial pain pathway, the ventral medial prefrontal cortex, and the bilateral anterior cingulate cortex as well as parahippocampal area, the latter two of which comprise the descending pain pathway. Relative deactivation was observed in the left somatosensory cortex, constituting the lateral pain pathway as well as other sensory areas such as the visual and auditory cortex. The EEG results also showed increased activity in the descending pain pathway. The pregenual anterior cingulate cortex extending into the ventral medial prefrontal cortex displayed this increase in the theta, alpha1, alpha2, beta1, and beta2 frequency bands. CONCLUSION: PET shows that ONS exerts its effect via activation of the descending pain inhibitory pathway and the lateral pain pathway in fibromyalgia, while EEG shows activation of those cortical areas that could be responsible for descending inhibition system recruitment. INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the effect of a six-month supervised physical exercise program on the physical and cardio-metabolic profile and quality of life in patients with prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy were included in a physical exercise program. The program consisted of supervised physical exercises during a six-month period (two hours, twice a week). The exercise program contained moderate to high intensity aerobic and resistance exercises: cycling, walking or jogging for 45 minutes at an intensity of ±80% of the individual maximum heart rate, followed by resistance exercises targeting the major lower and upper body muscles. All patients were assessed prior to the exercise program, including anthropometrical parameters, blood analysis, quality of life and physical fitness. Blood analysis was repeated at a three-month follow-up. Anthropometrical parameters, physical fitness and quality of life were recorded at a three-, six- and nine-month follow-up. RESULTS: A positive effect on physical performance, muscular strength and quality of life was seen. The applied physical exercise program was well tolerated and characterized by a high satisfaction rate. An alarming issue of remarkably unfavorable baseline cardio-metabolic profile was revealed within our study population. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicates that a six-month supervised physical exercise program can be beneficial in preventing androgen deprivation therapy-related side effects in patients with prostate cancer. We emphasize the importance of screening for cardio-metabolic risk factors in patients who are treated with androgen deprivation therapy.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to translate the English version of the Modified Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (MDQ) into a Dutch version and investigate its clinimetric properties for patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Fritz et al (2001) developed a modified version of the Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (ODI) to assess functional status and named it the MDQ. In this version, a question regarding employment and homemaking ability was substituted for the question related to sex life. Good clinimetric properties for the MDQ were identified but up until now it is not clear whether the clinimetric properties of the MDQ would change if it was translated into a Dutch version. METHODS: Translation of the MDQ into Dutch was done in 4 steps. Test-retest reliability was investigated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) model. Validity was calculated using Pearson correlations and a 2-way analysis of variance for repeated measures. Finally, responsiveness was calculated with the area under the curve (AUC), minimal detectable change (MDC), and the standardized response mean (SRM). RESULTS: A total of 80 completed questionnaires were collected in 3 different hospitals and a total of 43 patients finished a 9 weeks intervention period, completing the retest. Test-retest reliability was excellent with an ICC of 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.74-0.95). To confirm the convergent validity, the MDQ answered all predefined hypothesises (r = -0.65-0.69/P = 0.01-0.00) and good results for construct validity were found (P = 0.02). The MDQ had an AUC of 0.64 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.47-0.81), an MDC of 8.80 points, and a SRM of 0.65. CONCLUSION: The Dutch version of the MDQ shows good clinimetric properties and is shown to be usable in the assessment of the functional status of Dutch-speaking patients with nonspecific CLBP. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of physical functioning tests in patients with low back pain (LBP) and to investigate their reliability. DATA SOURCES: A systematic computerized search was finalized in four different databases on June 24, 2017: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and MEDLINE. STUDY SELECTION: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed during all stages of this review. Clinical studies that investigate the reliability of physical functioning tests in patients with LBP were eligible. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed with the use of the Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. To come to final conclusions on the reliability of the identified clinical tests, the current review assessed three factors, namely, outcome assessment, methodological quality, and consistency of description. DATA SYNTHESIS: A total of 20 studies were found eligible and 38 clinical tests were identified. Good overall test-retest reliability was concluded for the extensor endurance test (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]=0.93-0.97), the flexor endurance test (ICC=0.90-0.97), the 5-minute walking test (ICC=0.89-0.99), the 50-ft walking test (ICC=0.76-0.96), the shuttle walk test (ICC=0.92-0.99), the sit-to-stand test (ICC=0.91-0.99), and the loaded forward reach test (ICC=0.74-0.98). For inter-rater reliability, only one test, namely, the Biering-Sörensen test (ICC=0.88-0.99), could be concluded to have an overall good inter-rater reliability. None of the identified clinical tests could be concluded to have a good intrarater reliability. CONCLUSIONS: Further investigation should focus on a better overall study methodology and the use of identical protocols for the description of clinical tests. The assessment of reliability is only a first step in the recommendation process for the use of clinical tests. In future research, the identified clinical tests in the current review should be further investigated for validity. Only when these clinimetric properties of a clinical test have been thoroughly investigated can a final conclusion regarding the clinical and scientific use of the identified tests be made.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates biomechanical implications of walking with indigenous "Kolhapuri" footwear compared to barefoot walking among a population of South Indians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten healthy adults from South India walked barefoot and indigenously shod at voluntary speed on an artificial substrate. The experiment was repeated outside, on a natural substrate. Data were collected from (1) a heel-mounted 3D-accelerometer recording peak impact at heel contact, (2) an ankle-mounted 3D-goniometer (plantar/dorsiflexion and inversion/eversion), and (3) sEMG electrodes at the m. tibialis anterior and the m. gastrocnemius medialis. RESULTS: Data show that the effect of indigenous footwear on the measured variables, compared to barefoot walking, is relatively small and consistent between substrates (even though subjects walked faster on the natural substrate). Walking barefoot, compared to shod walking yields higher impact accelerations, but the differences are small and only significant for the artificial substrate. The main rotations of the ankle joint are mostly similar between conditions. Only the shod condition shows a faster ankle rotation over the rapid eversion motion on the natural substrate. Maximal dorsiflexion in late stance differs between the footwear conditions on an artificial substrate, with the shod condition involving a less dorsiflexed ankle, and the plantar flexion at toe-off is more extreme when shod. Overall the activity pattern of the external foot muscles is similar. DISCUSSION: The indigenous footwear studied (Kolhapuri) seems to alter foot biomechanics only in a subtle way. While offering some degree of protection, walking in this type of footwear resembles barefoot gait and this type of indigenous footwear might be considered "minimal".

OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive overview of clinical tests associated with functional lumbar segmental instability and motor control impairment in patients with low back pain (LBP), and to investigate their intrarater reliability, interrater reliability, or both. DATA SOURCES: A systematic computerized search was conducted on December 1, 2015, in 4 different databases (starting search year is indicated in parentheses, with articles included from that year until December 1, 2015): PubMed (1972-), Web of Science (1955-), Embase (1947-), and MEDLINE (1946-). STUDY SELECTION: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed during design, search, and reporting stages of this review. The included population comprised patients with primary LBP. DATA EXTRACTION: Data were extracted as follows: (1) description and scoring of the clinical tests; (2) population characteristics; (3) inclusion and exclusion criteria; (4) description of the used procedures; (5) results for both intra- and interrater reliability; and eventually (6) notification on used statistical method. The risk of bias of the included articles was assessed with the use of the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments checklist. DATA SYNTHESIS: A total of 16 records were eligible, and 30 clinical tests were identified. All included studies investigated interrater reliability, and 3 studies investigated intrarater reliability. The identified interrater reliability scores ranged from poor to very good (κ=-.09 to .89; intraclass correlation coefficient, .72-.96), and the intrarater reliability scores ranged from fair to very good (κ=.51-.86). CONCLUSIONS: Three clinical tests (aberrant movement pattern, prone instability test, Beighton Scale) could be identified as having an adequate interrater reliability. No conclusions could be made for intrarater reliability. However, further research should focus on better study designs, provide an overall agreement for uniformity and interpretation of clinical tests, and should implement research regarding validity.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety and efficacy of hyaluronan (HA) injections with standard extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of painful midportion Achilles' tendinopathy. DESIGN: Multinational, prospective, randomized controlled, blinded-observer trial. SETTING: Ambulatory care. PARTICIPANTS: Adults (N=62) with Achilles' midportion tendinopathy for ≥6 weeks and a pain score of at least 40mm (Huskisson visual analog scale [VAS], 100mm) were randomized, and 59 were analyzed in the intention-to-treat data set. There were no withdrawals because of adverse effects. INTERVENTIONS: Two peritendinous HA injections versus 3 ESWT applications at weekly intervals. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary efficacy criterion was changed from the Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment-Achilles' questionnaire (VISA-A) score to the percent change in pain (VAS) at 3 months posttreatment, compared with baseline values. Main secondary parameters were VISA-A, Clinical Global Impression (CGI), and clinical parameters. RESULTS: HA treatment provided a clinically relevant improvement in Achilles' midportion tendinopathy. A large superiority of the HA group, compared with ESWT application, was observed for percent change in pain (VAS), and this superiority was proven to be statistically significant (Mann-Whitney statistic [MW]=.7507 with P=.0030 lower than required α=.025 significance level 1-sided; Mann-Whitney U test) at 3 months posttreatment. Similar findings for HA were also observed at 4 weeks (MW=.6425, P=.0304) and 6 months (MW=.7172, P=.0018). Advantage of HA treatment was confirmed by VISA-A questionnaire, CGI, and clinical parameters. Ten adverse events, 4 in the HA group and 6 in the ESWT group, were reported, but none were classified as serious. CONCLUSIONS: Two peritendinous HA injections showed greater treatment success in Achilles' midportion tendinopathy compared with standard ESWT.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the literature for efficacy of isolated articular mobilization techniques in patients with primary adhesive capsulitis (AC) of the shoulder. DATA SOURCES: PubMed and Web of Science were searched for relevant studies published before November 2014. Additional references were identified by manual screening of the reference lists. STUDY SELECTION: All English language randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of mobilization techniques on range of motion (ROM) and pain in adult patients with primary AC of the shoulder were included in this systematic review. Twelve randomized controlled trials involving 810 patients were included. DATA EXTRACTION: Two reviewers independently screened the articles, scored methodologic quality, and extracted data for analysis. The review was conducted and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. All studies were assessed in duplicate for risk of bias using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale for randomized controlled trials. DATA SYNTHESIS: The efficacy of 7 different types of mobilization techniques was evaluated. Angular mobilization (n=2), Cyriax approach (n=1), and Maitland technique (n=6) showed improvement in pain score and ROM. With respect to translational mobilizations (n=1), posterior glides are preferred to restore external rotation. Spine mobilizations combined with glenohumeral stretching and both angular and translational mobilization (n=1) had a superior effect on active ROM compared with sham ultrasound. High-intensity mobilization (n=1) showed less improvement in the Constant Murley Score than a neglect group. Finally, positive long-term effects of the Mulligan technique (n=1) were found on both pain and ROM. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, mobilization techniques have beneficial effects in patients with primary AC of the shoulder. Because of preliminary evidence for many mobilization techniques, the Maitland technique and combined mobilizations seem recommended at the moment.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective Cohort. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to identify prognostic indicators for success after a back rehabilitation program (BR) in patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Exercise therapy is recommended for patients with nonspecific CLBP. Consensus on the type of exercises is lacking, largely due to heterogeneity in the studied patient samples. The identification of subgroups through the identification of prognostic indicators is therefore needed. To our knowledge, no specific prognostic indicators for BR are described in the literature. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the patient files of 49 nonspecific CLBP patients who followed a BR. Patients were selected based on predefined in- and exclusion criteria. All underwent 43 therapy sessions, two times per week. Primary outcome measure and dependent variable was the change in Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (ODI) score. Potential predictive variables were tested for association with the primary outcome and consequently entered in a logistic regression model. RESULTS: In this study, the posthoc calculated power was 91%. Based on the change in ODI scores, 24 patients were considered as therapy success (eight points or 50% improvement on change in ODI score) and 25 as therapy failure. Univariate and multiple regression analysis revealed only one significant prognostic indicator: higher scores on the physical function subscale of the SF36 (PF-SF36) corresponded with high risk of therapy failure (odds ratio of 0.791 (95% CI =  .662-0.945); sensitivity of 0.79, and specificity of 0.68). CONCLUSION: Potentially, the preset exercises of the BR in this study design were not appropriate for the identified subgroup. The results of this study should be replicated in a RCT design that conforms to the necessary methodological steps in the identification of prognostic indicators and clinical prediction rules (CPRs).

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of upper-body-quadrant pain among ultrasonographers and to evaluate the association between individual ergonomics, musculoskeletal disorders, and occurrence of neck pain. METHOD: A hundred and ten (N = 110) Belgian and Dutch male and female hospital ultrasonographers were consecutively enrolled in the study. Data on work-related ergonomic and musculoskeletal disorders were collected with an electronic inquiry, including questions regarding ergonomics (position of the screen, high-low table, and ergonomic chair), symptoms (neck pain, upper-limb pain), and work-related factors (consecutive working hours a day, average working hours a week). RESULTS: Subjects with the screen on their left had significantly more neck pain (odds ratio [OR] = 3.6, p = .0286). Depending on the workspace, high-low tables increased the chance of developing neck pain (OR = 12.9, p = .0246). A screen at eye level caused less neck pain (OR = .22, p = .0610). Employees with a fixed working space were less susceptible to arm pain (OR = 0.13, p = .0058). The prevalence of arm pain was significantly higher for the vascular department compared to radiology, urology, and gynecology departments (OR = 9.2, p = .0278). CONCLUSIONS: Regarding prevention of upper-limb pain in ultrasonograph, more attention should be paid to the work environment and more specialty to the ultrasound workstation layout. Primary ergonomic prevention could provide a painless work situation for the ultrasonographer. APPLICATION: Further research on the ergonomic conditions of ultrasonography is necessary to develop ergonomic solutions in the work environment that will help to alleviate neck and arm pain.
