RESUMO

Detection of a gravitational-wave signal of non-astrophysical origin would be a landmark discovery, potentially providing a significant clue to some of our most basic, big-picture scientific questions about the Universe. In this white paper, we survey the leading early-Universe mechanisms that may produce a detectable signal-including inflation, phase transitions, topological defects, as well as primordial black holes-and highlight the connections to fundamental physics. We review the complementarity with collider searches for new physics, and multimessenger probes of the large-scale structure of the Universe.

RESUMO

We study signatures of cosmic superstring networks containing strings of multiple tensions and Y junctions, on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization spectra. Focusing on the crucial role of the string coupling constant g(s), we show that the number density and energy density of the scaling network are dominated by different types of string in the g(s) ~ 1 and g(s) ≪ 1 limits. This can lead to an observable shift in the position of the B-mode peak--a distinct signal leading to a direct constraint on g(s). We forecast the joint bounds on g(s) and the fundamental string tension µ(F) from upcoming and future CMB polarization experiments, as well as the signal to noise in detecting the difference between B-mode signals in the limiting cases of large and small g(s). We show that such a detectable shift is within reach of planned experiments.

RESUMO

We study Dirac-Born-Infeld inflation models with multiple scalar fields. We show that the adiabatic and entropy modes propagate with a common effective sound speed and are thus amplified at the sound horizon crossing. In the small sound speed limit, we find that the amplitude of the entropy modes is much higher than that of the adiabatic modes. We show that this could strongly affect the observable curvature power spectrum as well as the amplitude of non-Gaussianities, although their shape remains as in the single-field Dirac-Born-Infeld case.

RESUMO

We investigate all spherically symmetric fundamental monopole solutions with fixed topological charge in the SU(5)-->[SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1)]/Z(3) x Z(2) symmetry breaking. We find that there are three solutions that are gauge equivalent but, as we argue, would correspond to physically distinct degrees of freedom in the dualized version of the model. The triplication of monopoles could help us understand the observed family structure of standard model particles.
