RESUMO

Background The subgenual cingulate cortex (SGC) has been identified as a key structure within multiple neural circuits whose dysfunction is implicated in the neurobiology of depression. Deep brain stimulation in the SGC is thought to reduce and normalize local metabolism, causing normalization of circuit behavior and an improvement in depressive symptoms. We hypothesized that nonablative stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) to the SGC would reduce local metabolism and reduce the severity of depression in patients with treatment-resistant bipolar depression. Methods Under the FDA's Humanitarian Device Exemption program, patients were screened for inclusion and exclusion criteria. Three volunteers meeting the criteria provided informed consent. Bilateral SGC targets were irradiated to a maximum dose of 75 Gy in one fraction. Subjects were followed for one year following the procedure with mood assessments (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Clinical Global Impression-Improvement, Clinical Global Impression-Severity, and Young Mania Rating Scale), neurocognitive testing (Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale III digit span, and California Verbal Learning Test II), and imaging. Further imaging was completed approximately two years after the procedure. Clinical improvement was defined as a ≥50% reduction in HDRS. Results Two of the three subjects showed clinical improvement in depressive symptoms during the follow-up period, while one subject showed no change in symptom severity. One of three subjects was hospitalized for the emergence of an episode of psychotic mania after discontinuing antipsychotic medications against medical advice but promptly recovered with the reinstitution of an antipsychotic. Sequential assessments did not reveal impairment in any cognitive domain assessed. For one of the three subjects, MRI imaging showed evidence of edema at 12 months post-SRS, which resolved at 22 months post-procedure. In a second of three patients, there was evidence of local edema at the target site at long-term follow-up. All imaging changes were asymptomatic. Conclusion Radiosurgical targeting of the SGC may be a noninvasive strategy for the reduction of severe depression in treatment-resistant bipolar disorder. Two out of three patients showed clinical improvement. While these results are promising, further study, including improvements in target selection and dosing considerations, is needed.

Pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater have emerged as a significant concern for the aquatic environment. The use of in vitro bioassays represents a sustainable and cost-effective approach for assessing the potential toxicological risks of these biologically active compounds in wastewater and aligns with ethical considerations in research. It facilitates high-throughput analysis, captures mixture effects, integrates impacts of both known and unknown chemicals, and reduces reliance on animal testing. The core aim of the current review was to explore the practical application of in vitro bioassays in evaluating the environmental impacts of pharmaceuticals in wastewater. This comprehensive review strives to achieve several key objectives. First, it provides a summary categorisation of pharmaceuticals based on their mode of action, providing a structured framework for understanding their ecological significance. Second, a chronological analysis of pharmaceutical research aims to document their prevalence and trends over time, shedding light on evolving environmental challenges. Third, the review critically analyses existing bioassay applications in wastewater, while also examining bioassay coverage of representative compounds within major pharmaceutical classes. Finally, it explores the potential for developing innovative bioassays tailored for water quality monitoring of pharmaceuticals, paving the way for more robust environmental monitoring and risk assessment. Overall, adopting effect-based methods for pharmaceutical monitoring in water holds significant promise. It encompasses a broad spectrum of biological impacts, promotes standardized protocols, and supports a bioassay test battery approach indicative of different endpoints, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of environmental risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: Lung transplant recipients are traditionally monitored with pulmonary function testing (PFT) and lung biopsy to detect post-transplant complications and guide treatment. Plasma donor-derived cell free DNA (dd-cfDNA) is a novel molecular approach of assessing allograft injury, including subclinical allograft dysfunction. The aim of this study was to determine if episodes of extreme molecular injury (EMI) in lung transplant recipients increases the risk of CLAD or death. METHODS: This multicenter prospective cohort study included 238 lung transplant recipients. Serial plasma samples were collected for dd-cfDNA measurement by shotgun sequencing. EMI was defined as a dd-cfDNA above the third quartile of levels observed for acute rejection (dd-cfDNA level of ≥ 5% occurring after 45 days post-transplant). EMI was categorized as Secondary if associated with co-existing acute rejection, infection or PFT decline; or Primary if not associated to these conditions. RESULTS: EMI developed in 16% of patients at a median 343.5 (IQR: 177.3-535.5) days post-transplant. Over 50% of EMI episodes were classified as Primary. EMI was associated with an increased risk of severe CLAD or death (HR: 2.52, 95% CI: 1.10 - 3.82, p= 0.024). The risk remained consistent for Primary EMI (HR: 2.34, 95% CI 1.18-4.85, p=0.015). Time to first EMI episode was a significant predictor of the likelihood of developing CLAD or death (AUC=0.856, 95% CI =.805-908, p<.001). CONCLUSIONS: Episodes of EMI in lung transplant recipients are often isolated and not detectable with traditional clinical monitoring approaches. EMI is associated with an increased risk of severe CLAD or death, independent of concomitant transplant complications.

While several functions of the endogenous prion protein (PrP) have been studied, the homeostatic function of PrP is still debated. Notably, PrP is highly expressed on mast cells, granular immune cells that regulate inflammation. When activated, mast cells shed PrP though the mechanism and consequences of this are not yet understood. First, we tested several mast cell lines and found that, while PrP was almost always present, the total amount differed greatly. Activation of mast cells induced a cleavage of the N-terminal region of PrP, and this was reduced by protease inhibitors. Exogenous mast cell proteases caused a similar loss of the PrP N-terminus. Additionally, mast cells shed PrP in an ADAM10-dependent fashion even in the absence of activation. Our results suggest that PrP is cleaved from resting mast cells by ADAM10 and from activated mast cells by mast cell proteases. PrP also appears to affect mast cell function, as Prnp-/- BMMC showed lower levels of degranulation and cytokine release, as well as lower levels of both FcεRI and CD117. Finally, we sought to provide clinical relevance by measuring the levels of PrP in bodily fluids of asthmatic patients, a disease that involves the activation of mast cells. We found an N-terminal fragment of PrP could be detected in human sputum and serum and the amount of this PrP fragment was decreased in the serum of patients with asthma.

Schwann cells are vital to development and maintenance of the peripheral nervous system and their dysfunction has been implicated in a range of neurological and neoplastic disorders, including NF2 -related schwannomatosis. We have developed a novel human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) model for the study of Schwann cell differentiation in health and disease. We performed transcriptomic, immunofluorescence, and morphological analysis of hiPSC derived Schwann cell precursors (SPCs) and terminally differentiated Schwann-like cells (SLCs) representing distinct stages of development. To further validate our findings, we performed integrated, cross-species analyses across multiple external datasets at bulk and single cell resolution. Our hiPSC model of Schwann cell development shared overlapping gene expression signatures with human amniotic mesenchymal stem cell (hAMSCs) derived SLCs and in vivo mouse models, but also revealed unique features that may reflect species-specific aspects of Schwann cell biology. Moreover, we have identified gene co-expression modules that are dynamically regulated during hiPSC to SLC differentiation associated with ear and neural development, cell fate determination, the NF2 gene, and extracellular matrix (ECM) organization. By cross-referencing results between multiple datasets and analyses, we have identified potential new genes that are related to NF2 for further study including: ANXA1, CDH6, COL1A1, COL8A1, MFAP5, IGFBP5, FGF1, AHNAK, CDKN2B, LOX, CAV1 , and CAV2 . Our hiPSC model further provides a tractable platform for studying Schwann cell development in the context of human disease.

Many techniques exist for the identification of protein interaction networks. We present a protocol that relies on an affinity purification-mass spectrometry (AP-MS) approach to detect proteins that co-purify with a tagged bait of interest from Drosophila melanogaster larval muscles using the GAL4/upstream activating sequence (UAS) expression system. We also describe steps for the isolation and identification of protein complexes, followed by streamlined bioinformatics analysis for rapid and reproducible results. This protocol can be extended to investigate protein interactions in other tissues. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Guo et al.1.

OBJECTIVE: Fragmented readmissions, when admission and readmission occur at different hospitals, are associated with increased charges compared with nonfragmented readmissions. We assessed if hospital participation in health information exchange (HIE) was associated with differences in total charges in fragmented readmissions. DATA SOURCE: Medicare Fee-for-Service Data, 2018. STUDY DESIGN: We used generalized linear models with hospital referral region and readmission month fixed effects to assess relationships between information sharing (same HIE, different HIEs, and no HIE available) and total charges of 30-day readmissions among fragmented readmissions; analyses were adjusted for patient-level clinical/demographic characteristics and hospital-level characteristics. DATA EXTRACTION METHODS: We included beneficiaries with a hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, syncope, urinary tract infection, dehydration, or behavioral issues with a 30-day readmission for any reason. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In all, 279,729 admission-readmission pairs were included, 27% of which were fragmented (n=75,438); average charges of fragmented readmissions were $64,897-$71,606. Compared with fragmented readmissions where no HIE was available, the average marginal effects of same-HIE and different-HIE admission-readmission pairs were -$2329.55 (95% CI: -7333.73, 2674.62) and -$3905.20 (95% CI: -7592.85, -307.54), respectively. While the average marginal effects of different-HIE pairs were lower than those for no-HIE fragmented readmissions, the average marginal effects of same-HIE and different-HIE pairs were not significantly different from each other. CONCLUSIONS: There were no statistical differences in charges between fragmented readmissions to hospitals that share an HIE or that do not share an HIE compared with hospitals with no HIE available.

Background: Since 2009, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) specialists have utilized "IBD LIVE," a weekly live video conference with a global audience, to discuss the multidisciplinary management of their most challenging cases. While most cases presented were confirmed IBD, a substantial number were diseases that mimic IBD. We have categorized all IBD LIVE cases and identified "IBD-mimics" with consequent clinical management implications. Methods: Cases have been recorded/archived since May 2018; we reviewed all 371 cases from May 2018-February 2023. IBD-mimics were analyzed/categorized according to their diagnostic and therapeutic workup. Results: Confirmed IBD cases made up 82.5% (306/371; 193 Crohn's disease, 107 ulcerative colitis, and 6 IBD-unclassified). Sixty-five (17.5%) cases were found to be mimics, most commonly medication-induced (n = 8) or vasculitis (n = 7). The evaluations that ultimately resulted in correct diagnosis included additional endoscopic biopsies (n = 13, 21%), surgical exploration/pathology (n = 10, 16.5%), biopsies from outside the GI tract (n = 10, 16.5%), genetic/laboratory testing (n = 8, 13%), extensive review of patient history (n = 8, 13%), imaging (n = 5, 8%), balloon enteroscopy (n = 5, 8%), and capsule endoscopy (n = 2, 3%). Twenty-five patients (25/65, 38%) were treated with biologics for presumed IBD, 5 of whom subsequently experienced adverse events requiring discontinuation of the biologic. Many patients were prescribed steroids, azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or methotrexate, and 3 were trialed on tofacitinib. Conclusions: The diverse presentation of IBD and IBD-mimics necessitates periodic consideration of the differential diagnosis, and reassessment of treatment in presumed IBD patients without appropriate clinical response. The substantial differences and often conflicting treatment approaches to IBD versus IBD-mimics directly impact the quality and cost of patient care.

BACKGROUND: Plasmacytoma, a rare plasma cell disorder, often presents as a solitary or multiple tumors within the bone marrow or soft tissues, typically associated with multiple myeloma. Extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs), particularly those located in the external auditory canal (EAC), are exceedingly rare and pose significant treatment challenges given their location, anatomical complexity, and high risk of recurrence. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the case of a 72-year-old male with a history of multiple myeloma, presenting with recurrent left EAC plasmacytoma. After initial conventional radiotherapy for the lesion, a recurrence was documented in 7 years. The patient subsequently underwent stereotactic radiosurgery, which proved successful, leading to complete resolution of the lesion without any long-term adverse effects or radiation-related complications over a 45-month period. LESSONS: This case is a unique instance of utilizing stereotactic radiosurgery for recurrent EMP in the EAC, highlighting its potential as an effective approach in managing complex plasmacytomas.

The genus Clostridium is a large and diverse group within the Bacillota (formerly Firmicutes), whose members can encode useful complex traits such as solvent production, gas-fermentation, and lignocellulose breakdown. We describe 270 genome sequences of solventogenic clostridia from a comprehensive industrial strain collection assembled by Professor David Jones that includes 194 C. beijerinckii, 57 C. saccharobutylicum, 4 C. saccharoperbutylacetonicum, 5 C. butyricum, 7 C. acetobutylicum, and 3 C. tetanomorphum genomes. We report methods, analyses and characterization for phylogeny, key attributes, core biosynthetic genes, secondary metabolites, plasmids, prophage/CRISPR diversity, cellulosomes and quorum sensing for the 6 species. The expanded genomic data described here will facilitate engineering of solvent-producing clostridia as well as non-model microorganisms with innately desirable traits. Sequences could be applied in conventional platform biocatalysts such as yeast or Escherichia coli for enhanced chemical production. Recently, gene sequences from this collection were used to engineer Clostridium autoethanogenum, a gas-fermenting autotrophic acetogen, for continuous acetone or isopropanol production, as well as butanol, butanoic acid, hexanol and hexanoic acid production.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is one of the most common forms of genetic cardiomyopathy. Mavacamten is a first-in-class myosin modulator that was identified via activity screening on the wild type, and it is FDA-approved for the treatment of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The drug selectively binds to the cardiac ß-myosin, inhibiting myosin function to decrease cardiac contractility. Though the drug is thought to affect multiple steps of the myosin cross-bridge cycle, its detailed mechanism of action is still under investigation. Individual steps in the overall cross-bridge cycle must be queried to elucidate the full mechanism of action. In this study, we utilize the rare-event method of transition path sampling to generate reactive trajectories to gain insights into the action of the drug on the dynamics and rate of the ATP hydrolysis step for human cardiac ß-myosin. We study three known HCM causative myosin mutations: R453C, P710R, and R712L to observe the effect of the drug on the alterations caused by these mutations in the chemical step. Since the crystal structure of the drug-bound myosin was not available at the time of this work, we created a model of the drug-bound system utilizing a molecular docking approach. We find a significant effect of the drug in one case, where the actual mechanism of the reaction is altered from the wild type by mutation. The drug restores both the rate of hydrolysis to the wildtype level and the mechanism of the reaction. This is a way to check the effect of the drug on untested mutations.

Workflow for cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screws includes tapping line-to-line or under tapping by 1 mm. We describe a non-tapping, two-step workflow for CBT screw placement, and compare the safety profile and time savings to the Tap (three-step) workflow. Patients undergoing robotic assisted 1-3 level posterior fusion with CBT screws for degenerative conditions were identified and separated into either a No-Tap or Tap workflow. Number of total screws, screw-related complications, estimated blood loss, operative time, robotic time, and return to the operating room were collected and analyzed. There were 91 cases (458 screws) in the No-Tap and 88 cases (466 screws) in the Tap groups, with no difference in demographics, revision status, ASA grade, approach, number of levels fused or diagnosis between cohorts. Total robotic time was lower in the No-Tap (26.7 min) versus the Tap group (30.3 min, p = 0.053). There was no difference in the number of malpositioned screws identified intraoperatively (10 vs 6, p = 0.427), screws converted to freehand (3 vs 3, p = 0.699), or screws abandoned (3 vs 2, p = 1.000). No pedicle/pars fracture or fixation failure was seen in the No-Tap cohort and one in the Tap cohort (p = 1.00). No patients in either cohort were returned to OR for malpositioned screws. This study showed that the No-Tap screw insertion workflow for robot-assisted CBT reduces robotic time without increasing complications.

Academics in sports medicine as well as other medical fields are generally expected to publish research and opinions in peer-reviewed journals. The peer-review process is intended to protect against the publication of flawed research and unsubstantiated claims. However, both financial and non-financial competing interests may result in sub-optimal results by affecting investigators, editors, peer reviewers, academic institutions, and publishers. In this article, we focus on the non-financial competing interests created in our current academic system. Because these competing interests are embedded in our current scholastic framework, the potential biases are difficult to quantify. To minimize the effect of these competing interests, we review and highlight some underlying incentives for each stakeholder and some potential solutions to mitigate their effects.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational cohort. OBJECTIVES: This study explores the impact of Intraoperative hypotension (IOH)on post-op complications for major thoracolumbar spine fusion procedures. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: IOH with mean arterial pressure (MAP) < 65 mmHg is associated with post-op acute kidney injury (AKI) in general surgery. In spinal deformity surgery, IOH is a contributing factor to MEP changes and spinal cord dysfunction with deformity correction. METHODS: 539 thoracolumbar fusion cases, > 6 surgical levels and > 3 hours duration were identified. Anesthetic/surgical data included OR time, fluid volume, blood loss, blood product replacement and use of vasopressors. Arterial-line based MAP data was collected at 1 min intervals. Cummulative duration of MAP < 65 mmHg was recorded. IOH within the first hour of surgery vs. the entire case was determined. Post-op course and complications including SSI, GI complications, pulmonary complications, MI, DVT, PE, AKI and encephalopathy were noted. Cumulative complications were grouped as none, 1-2 complications, or >3 complications. RESULTS: There was a significant association between occurrence of complications and duration of IOH within the first hour of surgery (8.2 vs. 5.6 min, P<0.001) and across the entire procedure (28.1 vs. 19.3 min, P=0.008). This association persisted for individual major complications including SSI, acute respiratory failure, PE, ileus requiring NGT and post-operative cognitive dysfunction. Comparison of patients with 0 vs. 1-2 vs. 3 or more complications demonstrated that patients with 3 or more complications had a longer duration of IOH in the first hour of the surgery and that patients who had no complications received less vasopressor than patients who had 1-2 or 3 or more complications. CONCLUSION: This study identifies duration of IOH during the first hour of surgery as a previously unrecognized modifiable risk associated with major complications for multi-level lumbar fusion surgery.

Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common adult movement disorders. As the worldwide population ages, the incidence and prevalence of ET is increasing. Although most cases can be managed conservatively, there is a subset of ET that is refractory to medical management. By virtue of being "reversible", deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus is one commonly accepted intervention. As an alternative to invasive and expensive DBS, there has been a renaissance in treating ET with lesion-based approaches, spearheaded most recently by high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), the hallmark of which is that it is non-invasive. Meanwhile, stereotactic radiosurgical (SRS) lesioning of VIM represents another time-honored lesion-based non-invasive treatment of ET, which is especially well suited for those patients that cannot tolerate open neurosurgery and is now also getting a "second look". While multiple SRS platforms have been and continue to be used to treat ET, there is little in the way of dosimetric comparison between different technologies. In this brief technical report we compare the dosimetric profiles of three major radiosurgical platforms (Gamma Knife, CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery, and Zap-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery (GRS)) for the treatment of ET. In general, the GRS and Gamma Knife were shown to have the best theoretical dosimetric profiles for VIM lesioning. Nevertheless the relevance of such superiority to clinical outcomes requires future patient studies.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare disparities adversely affect clinical outcomes in racial and ethnic minorities. Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a complex disorder, and pressures for time and cost-containment may amplify the disparity for minorities in this condition. This study aimed to assess ethno-racial differences in the clinical outcomes of CP patients cared for at our institution. METHODS: This is a study of CP patients with available ethno-racial information followed at our pancreas center. We reviewed their demographics, comorbidities, clinical outcomes, and resource utilization: pain, frequent flares (≥ 2/year), local complications, psychosocial variables, exocrine, and endocrine insufficiency, imaging, endoscopic procedures, and surgeries. The outcomes underwent logistic regression to ascertain association(s) with covariates and were expressed as odds ratio (95% confidence intervals). RESULTS: Of the 445 CP patients, there were 23 Hispanics, 330 Non-Hispanic Whites, 47 Non-Hispanic Blacks, 16 Asian Americans, and 29 patients from Other/mixed races. Over a median follow-up of 7 years, no significant differences in the pain profile (p = 0.36), neuromodulator use (p = 0.94), and opioid use for intermittent (p = 0.34) and daily pain (p = 0.80) were observed. Frequent flares were associated with Hispanic ethnicity [2.98(1.20-7.36); p = 0.02], despite adjustment for smoking [2.21(1.11-4.41); p = 0.02)] and alcohol [1.88(1.06-3.35); p = 0.03]. Local complications (pseudocysts, mesenteric thrombosis, and biliary obstruction), exocrine and endocrine dysfunction, and healthcare resource utilization (cross-sectional imaging, endoscopic procedures, celiac blocks, or surgeries) were comparable across all ethno-racial groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although no significant differences in clinical outcomes, and health resource utilization were noted across ethno-racial groups, Hispanic ethnicity had significant association with CP flares. This study calls for further investigation of an understudied minority population with CP.

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal cancer (AC) excessive mucin production is a barrier to heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) drug delivery. Bromelain is a pineapple stem extract with mucolytic properties. We explored bromelain treatment effects against mucinous AC in a patient-derived tumor organoid (PTO) model and an AC cell line. PATIENTS AND METHODS: PTOs were fabricated from tumor specimens obtained from patients with AC undergoing cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC. PTOs underwent HIPEC treatment with bromelain, cisplatin, and mitomycin C (MMC) at 37 °C and 42 °C with and without bromelain pretreatment. RESULTS: From October 2020 to May 2023, 16 specimens were collected from 13 patients with low-grade (12/16, 75%) and high-grade AC (4/16, 25%). The mucin-depleting effects of bromelain were most significant in combination with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) compared with bromelain (47% versus 10%, p = 0.0009) or NAC alone (47% versus 12.8%, p = 0.0027). Bromelain demonstrated > 31% organoid viability reduction at 60 min (p < 0.001) and > 66% in 48 h (p < 0.0001). Pretreatment with bromelain increased cytotoxicity of both cisplatin and MMC HIPEC conditions by 31.6% (p = 0.0001) and 35.5% (p = 0.0001), respectively. Ki67, CK20, and MUC2 expression decreased after bromelain treatment; while increased caspase 3/7 activity and decreased Bcl-2 (p = 0.009) and Bcl-xL (p = 0.01) suggest induction of apoptosis pathways. Furthermore, autophagy proteins LC3A/B I (p < 0.03) and II (p < 0.031) were increased; while ATG7 (p < 0.01), ATG 12 (p < 0.04), and Becline 1(p < 0.03), expression decreased in bromelain-treated PTOs. CONCLUSIONS: Bromelain demonstrates cytotoxicity and mucolytic activity against appendiceal cancer organoids. As a pretreatment agent, it potentiates the cytotoxicity of multiple HIPEC regimens, potentially mediated through programmed cell death and autophagy.

BACKGROUND: End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) patients experience high symptom burden which has been associated with a negative impact on their interpersonal relationships. However, there is limited research exploring associations of social support and patient-reported outcomes among hemodialysis (HD) patients. METHODS: The current study is a secondary, cross-sectional analyses of the sociodemographic and clinical correlates of perceived social support (Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support; MSPSS) at baseline. The study examined the extent to which perceived social support is associated with pain, depression, fatigue, anxiety, sleep, and HRQoL (SF-12 Mental Component Score; MCS) and Physical Component Score; PCS)). RESULTS: Of the 160 randomized patients: mean (SD) age was 58 ±14 years; years on dialysis was 4.1 + 4.2; 45% were female; 29% Black, 13% American Indian, 18% Hispanic; 88% had at least high school education; and 27% were married. Mean baseline levels of perceived social support were comparable to other chronically ill populations. At least a high school education (p = 0.04) and being married (p = 0.05) were associated with higher total MSPSS scores. Higher MSPSS scores were correlated with lower levels of fatigue (r = 0.21, p =0.008; higher fatigue scores signify lower fatigue), pain (r = -0.17, p = 0.03), depressive symptoms (r = -0.26, p < 0.001), anxiety (r = -0.23, p = 0.004), better sleep quality (r = -0.32, p < 0.001) and SF-12 MCS (r = 0.26, p <0.001). Moderation analyses revealed male sex and non-Hispanic ethnicity resulted in stronger positive associations of perceived social support with SF-12 MCS. CONCLUSIONS: The level of perceived social support observed among thrice weekly HD patients in TACcare was similar to those observed in other chronic conditions. Because of the associations between perceived social support and patient-reported outcomes, particularly psychosocial and behavioral health outcomes, targeting social support appears to be warranted among HD patients.
