RESUMO

Six iridium(iii) complexes of the general form [Ir(C^N)2(N^N)]X (where C^N = cyclometalating ligand; N^N = disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridine), and incorporating alkyl chains of differing lengths (C8, C10, C12), have been synthesised and characterised. The complexes have been characterised using a variety of methods including spectroscopies (NMR, IR, UV-Vis, luminescence) and analytical techniques (high resolution mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction). Two dodecyl-functionalised complexes were studied for their behaviour in aqueous solutions. Although the complexes did not possess sufficient solubility to determine their critical micelle concentrations (CMC) in water, they were amenable for use as emissive dopants in a N-methyl C12 substituted imidazolium salt microemulsion carrier system with a CMC = 36.5 mM. The investigation showed that the metal doped microemulsions had increased CMCs of 40.4 and 51.3 mM and luminescent properties characterised by the dopant.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate an accelerated dispensing course for graduate entry (GE) pharmacy students with prior science-related degrees to join undergraduate (UG) students in year three of the Monash Pharmacy degree. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING: A one day accelerated dispensing course using MyDispense software was delivered to 59 GE students. The accelerated dispensing course was identical to the standard three-week dispensing course delivered to UG students. The same assessment of dispensing skills was conducted after course completion for both UG and GE students and included dispensing four prescriptions of varying difficulty. The assessment scores of the UG and GE students were compared. Perception data from the accelerated course were also collected. FINDINGS: The accelerated dispensing curriculum was well received by students. They found the simulation relevant to practice, easy to navigate, and helpful for preparing them for assessment. Overall, 5.1% of GE students failed the assessment, which was lower than the 32.6% failure rate in the UG cohort. Comparison of assessment grades between UG and GE students showed no notable disadvantage to attainment of learning outcomes with the accelerated curriculum. However, UG students were more likely to provide unsafe instructions compared to GE students in their labeling for three out of four prescriptions. SUMMARY: An accelerated dispensing curriculum can be effectively delivered to mature learners with a prior science-related degree as no notable deficiencies were identified when comparing the assessment results of GE students against UG students when both student cohorts undertook the same dispensing assessment.

RESUMO

Honesty is a near universally valued trait. However, the term honesty captures a litany of traits and behaviors, obscuring research on social perceptions and trait measurement of honesty and creating philosophical difficulties in accounting for what (if anything) unifies this diversity. We applied a prototype analysis approach to identify the most central elements of lay honesty conceptualizations, identifying elements that come to mind and are explicitly acknowledged as important to honesty. In five studies (N = 1,442), U.S. American participants generated 6,000+ free responses characterizing honesty and indicated which subtraits and behaviors best represent honesty. Truthfulness was most central to lay honesty conceptualizations across all studies and several centrality indices (frequency among responses and participants, agreement across participants, priority in lists, explicit ratings), though several other features were prominent. Findings illuminate social perceptions of honesty, critique popular measurement of trait honesty, and offer empirical foundations for philosophical analysis of honesty.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Internal herniae are a rare cause of acute small bowel obstruction (SBO), accounting for <1% of all causes of SBO. Given their low incidence and often vague presenting symptoms there can be a delay in their diagnosis - which can lead to unnecessary morbidity for patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 34 year-old nulliparous female who presented with acute abdominal pain and transpired to have a closed loop obstruction of her ileum through a congenital defect in her broad ligament, or a Quain hernia. DISCUSSION: This paper will describe this case and provide an updated literature review of Quain herniae from recent research. With regards to surgical management of these hernia, both laparoscopic and open approaches are appropriate as long as appropriately trained surgical staff are involved. If a contraltateral defect in the Broad ligament is identified, this should be repaired prophylactically at the time in order to prevent future instances of internal herniation. CONCLUSION: Increased awareness of the potential presenting symptoms and radiological features of Quain hernia, as outlined in this paper, is vital in order to reduce patient morbidity and mortality.

RESUMO

Main-group metals are inherently labile, hindering their use in catalysis. We exploit this lability in the synthesis of isocyanurates. For the first time we report a highly active catalyst that trimerizes alkyl, allyl and aryl isocyanates, and di-isocyanates, with low catalyst loadings under mild conditions, using a hemi-labile aluminium-pyridyl-bis(iminophenolate) complex.

RESUMO

Small-angle neutron scattering and contrast variation has been employed to quantify how a series of alcohols with increasing hydrophobicity exert different abilities to structure a model toluene based metallomicroemulsion - a microemulsion system stabilised with a metallosurfactant. Classical microemulsion phase evolution and droplet structure are observed, leading to an oil rich core stabilised by a surfactant film containing a highly concentrated, hydrated metal ion layer.

RESUMO

Sports nutrition recommendations provide guidance on dietary strategies to optimise sports performance. However, research indicates that young athletes often find it difficult to follow these guidelines in practice. Limited research exists on the determinants that influence adherence to sports nutrition guidelines. This study aimed to explore the perceptions and determinants of eating for health and performance in high-level male adolescent rugby union players. Determinants were explored using semi-structured individual interviews in New Zealand high-level male rugby union players (n = 20, 16⁻18 years). Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and then underwent thematic analysis. Perceptions of eating for health and performance included balance and variety, appropriate portions, and specific foods. Both adolescent- and sport-specific determinants influenced the food choices of participants. Determinants relevant to adolescent lifestyles included the influence of significant others such as peers and family but also included the taste, cost, convenience, and availability of food. Sports-specific determinants revolved around the desire to enhance sports performance, motivation to perform, and team culture. The media (mainstream and social media), physical appearance, and feeling good were identified as both adolescent- and sport-specific factors influencing food choice. These findings highlight the importance of having support and positive role modelling to help young athletes make optimal food choices for health and performance. Strategies to further enable healthy eating practices should aim to strengthen the support available to young athletes in the home, school, and sporting environments and should include education on appropriate social media use to inform eating for health and performance.

RESUMO

A series of substituted 2-phenylquinoxaline ligands have been explored to finely tune the visible emission properties of a corresponding set of cationic, cyclometallated iridium(III) complexes. The electronic and redox properties of the complexes were investigated through experimental (including time-resolved luminescence and transient absorption spectroscopy) and theoretical methods. The complexes display absorption and phosphorescent emissions in the visible region that are attributed to metal to ligand charge-transfer transitions. The different substitution patterns of the ligands induce variations in these parameters. Time-dependent DFT studies support these assignments and show that there is likely to be a strong spin-forbidden contribution to the visible absorption bands at λ=500-600 nm. Calculations also reliably predict the magnitude and trends in triplet emitting wavelengths for the series of complexes. The complexes were assessed as potential sensitisers in triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion experiments by using 9,10-diphenylanthracene as the acceptor; the methylated variants performed especially well with impressive upconversion quantum yields of up to 39.3 %.

RESUMO

Ten cationic heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes, [Ir(emptz)2(N^N)](PF6) were prepared from a cyclometalated iridium bridged-chloride dimer involving two ethyl-4-methylphenylthiazole-5-carboxylate (emptz) ligands. One X-ray crystallographic study was undertaken where the ancillary N^N ligand was 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline and revealed the anticipated structure, showing a distorted octahedral coordination geometry at Ir(III). The complexes were visibly luminescent with modestly structured emission at 540-590 nm and lifetimes (60-340 ns) consistent with phosphorescence. TD-DFT calculations suggest that strong MLCT character contributes to the visible absorption characteristics, whilst the moderately structured emission profiles indicate a (3)MLCT/(3)IL admixture of states to the phosphorescence.

RESUMO

Eight cationic heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes, [Ir(epqc)2(N^N)](+), were prepared in high yield from a cyclometalated iridium bridged-chloride dimer bearing two ethyl-2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylate (epqc) ligands. Two X-ray crystallographic studies were undertaken on selected complexes (where the ancillary ligand N^N = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) each confirming the proposed formulations, showing an octahedral coordination at Ir(III). In general, the complexes are luminescent (620-630 nm) with moderately long lifetimes indicative of phosphorescence. Hydrolysis of the ethyl ester moieties of the epqc ligands gave the analogous cinchophen-based complexes, which were water-soluble and visibly luminescent (568-631 nm). The spectroscopic and redox characterisation of the complexes was complemented by DFT and TD-DFT calculations, supporting the assignment of dominant (3)MLCT to the emissive character.
