RESUMO

Plant materials used in the construction of segments and beacon towers of the ancient Great Wall in northwestern China contain untapped potential for revealing local paleoclimatic and environmental conditions. For the first time, we characterize the molecular preservation and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of AMS-dated common reeds (Phragmites) collected from ancient Great Wall fascines in today's Gansu and Xinjiang using a combination of chromatographic techniques and isotope analyses. Our molecular data, along with Scanning Electron Microscopy, demonstrate excellent preservation of these ancient reeds, which were harvested from nearby habitats during periods of significant expansion of Imperial China when climate conditions sustained sizeable oases in the region. Stable isotope data capture differential rates of environmental change along the eastern margin of the Tarim Basin since the Han Dynasty (170 BC), implying that significant surface-water hydrological changes occurred only after the Song Dynasty (1160 AD) due to regional climate change. This study reveals the wealth of environmental and climate information obtainable from these site-specific organic building materials and establishes the foundation for further applications of advanced molecular, biochemical, and isotopic technologies to study these common and widely-distributed organic archaeological materials.

Paleochannel sedimentary sequences can provide abundant information on regional environmental changes. A typical paleochannel (paleo-oxbow lake type) section of the Yellow River was identified within the Zoige Basin on the NE Tibetan Plateau. A multi-index approach was used to accurately identify sediments of different genetic types, such as riverbed deposits of the Yellow River, paleo-oxbow lake deposits, and overbank flood deposits (OFD) in the section. Based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and AMS 14C dates, we examined the environmental evolution recorded by the section. The results show that: (1) The section is a record of environmental change since 4.17 ± 0.49 ka. During 4.17 ± 0.49 to 3.24 ± 0.26 ka, the ancient Yellow River occupied the channel. At 3.24 ± 0.26 ka, the paleochannel experienced a neck cutoff, and the fluvial environment began to change into the oxbow lake environment. After 2.45 ± 0.11 ka, the paleo-oxbow lake gradually disappeared. Subalpine meadow soil has developed at this site since 1.31 ± 0.05 ka. (2) Paleoenvironmental proxies indicate that the Zoige Basin was warmer and wetter before ~3.00 ka, and became drier and colder after ~3.00 ka, which may be mainly related to the weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and the strengthening of the Westerlies. (3) Two episodes of extreme overbank flooding occurred at 2.96 ± 0.24 to 2.87 ± 0.27 ka and 1.84 ± 0.20 to 1.70 ± 0.16 ka, correlated with climate shift period from the mid-Holocene climatic optimum to the late Holocene and the Dark Age Cold Period (DACP), respectively. Due to the relatively cold and dry climate in these periods, glaciers generally advanced on the Tibetan Plateau, and the contribution of snow and ice meltwater weakened. Therefore, the strong rainfall caused by the abnormal atmospheric circulation may be the main cause of these extreme overbank flooding.

As a global cooling event, many of the climatic and socio-cultural mechanisms that resulted in changes after the 2. 8 ka BP event remain unclear. In China, this period roughly corresponds with the Zhou Dynasty (1046-212 BC), a critical period when ancient Chinese civilization was experiencing significant cultural and technological changes, including the movement of people to modern-day Jiangsu Province, where they intensively used the natural resources found in this the coastal area. Recent archaeobotanical evidence, and two radiocarbon dates on wheat and foxtail millet, indicate that the Datongpu site, which dates around 2,600 cal a BP, was occupied during this period of transition around the 2.8 ka BP climate event. In total, our investigations recovered 3,399 carbonized seeds from seventy-four flotation samples, of which rice, foxtail millet, broomcorn millet, and wheat seeds where predominant along with 2,296 weed seeds. Additionally, we identified several rice spikelets and wheat rachises. The high number of carbonized rice grains indicates that rice farming was the primary crop in an otherwise mixed rice-dry farming system at Datongpu. In addition, we argue that the "2.8 ka BP cold event" probably influenced population growth and caused food shortages throughout Central China, leading people to migrate southeastward along the Huai River to the coastal areas of Jianghuai Region. We argue that this abrupt shift in the climate indirectly facilitated the exploitation and emergence of large-scale agriculture in this area. Our study provides an example for the indirect impact of climate change in areas with relatively favorable climate conditions.

The relationship between the environment and human activities during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 is important for understanding the origins of modern humans (Homo sapiens) in East Asia, an area where various hypotheses of human origins have been vigorously debated over the past three decades. Unfortunately, only a handful of Paleolithic sites date to MIS 4 in East Asia, hampering our understanding of how environmental changes affected human activities during this time period. Here, we used stratigraphic correlation analysis and optically stimulated luminescence to date the Loufangzi site, an important Paleolithic site in North China that has had an unreliable chronology. Pollen analysis, grain size, and magnetic susceptibility were also used to reconstruct environmental conditions at the Loufangzi site area. Our results show that (1) the age of the upper culture layer of the Loufangzi site is bracketed between ∼70 ka and ∼60 ka and dates to MIS 4 and (2) the regional vegetation from MIS 5 to MIS 4 to MIS 3 was mainly dominated by forest steppe, desert steppe/desert, and steppe, respectively, indicating harsh environmental conditions during MIS 4. Combined with the discovery of Mousterian-like scrapers in the upper culture layer of MIS 4, our results challenge the view that the area was unsuitable for human survival during the Last Glacial period and instead suggest that humans used new technologies to increase their resilience to the cooling climate.

Rising global temperatures will increase the number of extreme weather events, creating new challenges for cities around the world. Archaeological research on the destruction and subsequent reoccupation of ancient cities has the potential to reveal geological and social dynamics that have historically contributed to making urban settings resilient to these extreme weather events. Using a combination of archaeological and geological methods, we examine how extreme flood events at Kaifeng, a former capital of dynastic China, have shaped the city's urban resilience. Specifically, we focus on an extreme Yellow River flood event in AD 1642 that historical records suggest killed around 300,000 people living in Kaifeng. Our recent archaeological excavations have discovered compelling geological and archaeological evidence that corroborates these documents, revealing that the AD 1642 Yellow River flood destroyed Kaifeng's inner city, entombing the city and its inhabitants within meters of silt and clay. We argue that the AD 1642 flood was extraordinarily catastrophic because Kaifeng's city walls only partly collapsed, entrapping most of the flood waters within the city. Both the geology of the Yellow River floods as well as the socio-political context of Kaifeng shaped the city's resilience to extreme flood events.

Archaeological evidence emerging over the past decade clearly illustrates that agro-pastoralists living along the foothills of major mountain chains in Central Asia (the so-called "Inner Asian Mountain Corridor" or IAMC) facilitated the spread of domesticated grains through their direct involvement in farming. While the environmental conditions across the northwestern slopes of the IAMC provided adequate resources for incipient farming and herding as early as the mid-3rd mill. BCE, the development of local agricultural strategies on the extremely arid and eroded foothills on the southeastern, leeward side of the mountains remain comparatively less studied. Our study tackles this problem by combining geoarchaeological analysis with conventional macrobotanical identification in the investigation of a 1st-mill. CE agro-pastoralist farming site, Mohuchahangoukou (MGK), located on the arid foothills of the Tianshan range. Our results illustrate how ancient agro-pastoralists at MGK innovated irrigation systems both to combat water shortage and, importantly, to trap sediments carried by flood-water for crop cultivation. By synthesizing currently available data, we estimate that they managed to trap about 40 cm of fine-grained sediment within a span of 200 years or even less. These stone-built field systems helped water a diverse stand of crops and create deeper soils in an otherwise deflated landscape with thin desert soils. Since we detected high levels of salt concentration (>2 dSm-1) in the lower portions of all three test trenches we analyzed, we conclude that soil salinization might have affected the long-term sustainability of this form of irrigated field management. We also infer that, besides engineering efforts, the ancient agro-pastoralists at MGK had to resolve the scheduling conflicts between irrigated farming and animal herding through labor specialization.

Grasslands are one of the world's most extensive terrestrial biomes and are central to the survival of herders, their livestock and diverse communities of large wild mammals1-3. In Africa, tropical soils are predominantly nutrient-limited4-6 but productive grassy patches in wooded grassland savannah ecosystems2,4 grow on fertile soils created by geologic and edaphic factors, megafauna, fire and termites4-6. Mobile pastoralists also create soil-fertility hotspots by penning their herds at night, which concentrates excrement-and thus nutrients-from grazing of the surrounding savannahs7-11. Historical anthropogenic hotspots produce high-quality forage, attract wildlife and increase spatial heterogeneity in African savannahs4,12-15. Archaeological research suggests this effect extends back at least 1,000 years16-19 but little is known about nutrient persistence at millennial scales. Here we use chemical, isotopic and sedimentary analyses to show high nutrient and 15N enrichment in on-site degraded dung deposits relative to off-site soils at five Pastoral Neolithic20 sites (radiocarbon dated to between 3,700 and 1,550 calibrated years before present (cal. BP)). This study demonstrates the longevity of nutrient hotspots and the long-term legacy of ancient herders, whose settlements enriched and diversified African savannah landscapes over three millennia.
