RESUMO

Currently, although energy conservation related research in buildings is a matter of great urgency in the context of an ever more serious energy crisis, people seem to pay more attention on the field of civil engineering, such as the design, construction, monitoring and maintenance management of building structures. This is also evidenced by the authors' extensive research and strong practical engineering experience in infrastructure projects such as bridges. This study first presents the general building energy situation. The state of the art of the energy in buildings is then reviewed, followed by pointing out the intelligent monitoring-based future direction, and then the final goal towards the smart city can be expected. Specifically, more than one hundred published papers are selected for sample analysis, taking into account different research topics and different publication dates etc. The research topics, research methods and research conclusions of these published papers are very different, and they have not yet produced results that could be generally accepted. Actually, most of the published papers focus on the analysis and conservation of building energy, including the energy model for analysis and prediction, the energy affected by resident behavior and building forms, the renewable energy utilization and zero energy building. While a small part of the published papers is concerned with the resilient structural energy dissipation and collapse-resistant. Furthermore, the intelligent monitoring of building energy, supported by advanced sensor development and big data analysis technology, is also providing us a more promising future on the way to the smart city. It should be further noted that the design and construction codes or standards related to building energy have not yet been retrieved, and these have a strong guiding significance for engineering practice. Therefore, more research needs to be done to expect a better practical outcome.

Nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) play a crucial role in hydrogen-bonded systems due to quantum tunneling and proton fluctuation. Our understanding of how NQEs affect microstructures mainly focuses on bulk phases of liquids and solids but remains deficient for water clusters, including their hydrogen nuclei, hydrogen-bonded configurations, and temperature dependence. Here, we conducted ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) and path integral MD simulations to investigate the influence of NQEs on the structural properties of protonated water clusters H+(H2O)n (n = 3, 6, 9, 12). The results reveal that the NQEs become less evident as the cluster size increases due to the competition between NQEs and electrostatic interactions. Simulations of several H+(H2O)6 isomers at different temperatures indicate that the effect of elevated temperature on proton transfer is related to the initial structure. Interestingly, the process of proton transfer also involves the interconversion between Zundel-type and Eigen-type isomers. These findings significantly deepen our understanding of ion-water and water-water interactions, opening new avenues for the study of hydrated ion clusters and related systems.

ABSTRACT: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction is a severe complication of the central nervous system that occurs after anesthesia and surgery, and has received attention for its high incidence and effect on the quality of life of patients. To date, there are no viable treatment options for postoperative cognitive dysfunction. The identification of postoperative cognitive dysfunction hub genes could provide new research directions and therapeutic targets for future research. To identify the signaling mechanisms contributing to postoperative cognitive dysfunction, we first conducted Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analyses of the Gene Expression Omnibus GSE95426 dataset, which consists of mRNAs and long non-coding RNAs differentially expressed in mouse hippocampus 3 days after tibial fracture. The dataset was enriched in genes associated with the biological process "regulation of immune cells," of which Chill was identified as a hub gene. Therefore, we investigated the contribution of chitinase-3-like protein 1 protein expression changes to postoperative cognitive dysfunction in the mouse model of tibial fracture surgery. Mice were intraperitoneally injected with vehicle or recombinant chitinase-3-like protein 1 24 hours post-surgery, and the injection groups were compared with untreated control mice for learning and memory capacities using the Y-maze and fear conditioning tests. In addition, protein expression levels of proinflammatory factors (interleukin-1ß and inducible nitric oxide synthase), M2-type macrophage markers (CD206 and arginase-1), and cognition-related proteins (brain-derived neurotropic factor and phosphorylated NMDA receptor subunit NR2B) were measured in hippocampus by western blotting. Treatment with recombinant chitinase-3-like protein 1 prevented surgery-induced cognitive impairment, downregulated interleukin-1ß and nducible nitric oxide synthase expression, and upregulated CD206, arginase-1, pNR2B, and brain-derived neurotropic factor expression compared with vehicle treatment. Intraperitoneal administration of the specific ERK inhibitor PD98059 diminished the effects of recombinant chitinase-3-like protein 1. Collectively, our findings suggest that recombinant chitinase-3-like protein 1 ameliorates surgery-induced cognitive decline by attenuating neuroinflammation via M2 microglial polarization in the hippocampus. Therefore, recombinant chitinase-3-like protein 1 may have therapeutic potential for postoperative cognitive dysfunction.

Advanced photosensitizers for high-performance fluorescence imaging-guided photothermal therapy demand excellent near-infrared (NIR) brightness [molar absorption coefficient (ε) × quantum yield (QY)] and exceptional photothermal performance [ε × photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE)]. However, integrating high brightness and potent photothermal performance within a single molecule faces a formidable challenge. This article proposes a method to address this issue by preparing J-aggregate nanoparticles (NPs) using molecules with high ε. J-aggregates effectively improve QY and induce molecular emission redshift, while high ε molecules play a crucial role in improving the brightness and photothermal performance. By optimizing the molecular structure based on the pyrrolopyrrole cyanine (PPCy), precise control over the QY and PCE of PPCy J-aggregates is achieved. Ultimately, PDDO NPs exhibiting superior brightness (ε × QY = 3.32 × 104 M-1 cm-1) and photothermal performance (ε × PCE = 1.21 × 105 M-1 cm-1) are identified as high-performance photosensitizers. Notably, each parameter represents one of the highest levels among the reported fluorescence or photothermal probes to date. The in vivo studies demonstrate that PDDO NPs possess exceptional NIR imaging capabilities and remarkable photothermal tumor inhibition rates. This study provides innovative insights into the development of high-performance multifunctional photosensitizers.

RESUMO

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and invasive tumor, and some patients will develop paraneoplastic syndrome (PS) during the course of the disease. This review summarizes PS associated with MPM, focusing on the clinical characteristics and treatment progress in hematological, endocrine, rheumatic, neurological, urinary, and other systems to decrease missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, help early diagnosis and prompt treatment, and provide guidance for the clinical decision-making of this kind of patients.

RATIONALE: Raney clips are commonly used in neurosurgical procedures to hold the scalp in place and stop bleeding during surgery. The removal of Raney clips is often the last process during cranial surgery prior to the closure of skin incision. Thus, a Raney clip found underneath the titanium mesh resulting in fever is a very rare occurrence. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 18-year-old male patient underwent cranial surgery due to intracranial abscess in the frontal lobe and subsequently underwent frontal skull repair using titanium mesh during which a Raney clip was unintentional left underneath the titanium mesh resulting in fever. DIAGNOSIS: A thin-slice computed tomography (CT) scan was used to identify the Raney clip. INTERVENTION: A third surgery was performed to remove the Raney clip. OUTCOMES: The patient fever total resolved after the third surgery with no further neurological deficits and 2-years follow-up revealed the patient is well and go about his daily activities. LESSONS: It is crucial to ensure that all foreign objects are removed after the surgery by counting all instruments used at and after each step during the operation, including all Raney clips. This will help prevent complications and ensure the safety as well as the well-being of the patient.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms of inflammatory cytokines and neonatal sepsis through meta-analysis. METHODS: We collected research literature on the correlation between inflammatory cytokine polymorphisms and neonatal sepsis published before August 2023 through computer searches of databases such as PubMed, Embase, etc. The Stata 14.0 software was utilized for Meta-analysis. To assess heterogeneity, the chi-squared Q-test and I2 statistics were used. The Egger and Begg tests were conducted to determine the possibility of publication bias. RESULTS: After reviewing 1129 articles, 29 relevant articles involving 3348 cases and 5183 controls were included in the study. The meta-analysis conducted on IL-1ßrs1143643 polymorphism revealed significant findings: the T allele genotype has a lower risk of neonatal sepsis(P = 0.000, OR = 0.224, 95% CI: 0.168-0.299), while the TC and TT genotypes showed an increased risk(TC: P = 0.000,OR = 4.251, 95% CI: 2.226-8.119; TT: P = 0.019,OR = 2.020, 95% CI: 1.122-3.639). Similarly, newborns with the IL-6-174 CC genotype had a significantly higher risk of sepsis(P = 0.000,OR = 1.591, 95% CI: 1.154-2.194), while those with the IL-8-rs4073 TT (P = 0.003,OR = 0.467, 95% CI: 0.280-0.777)and TT + AA(P = 0.003,OR = 0.497, 95% CI: 0.315-0.785) genotypes had a significantly lower risk of sepsis. For the IL-10-1082 gene, newborns with the AA genotype(P = 0.002,OR = 1.702, 95% CI: 1.218-2.377), as well as those with the AA + GA genotype(P = 0.016,OR = 1.731, 95% CI: 1.108-2.705), had a significantly higher risk of sepsis. Lastly, newborns carrying the TNF-α-308 A allele (P = 0.016,OR = 1.257, 95% CI: 1.044-1.513)or the AA genotype(P = 0.009,OR = 1.913, 95% CI: 1.179-3.10) have a significantly increased risk of sepsis. Notwithstanding, additional studies must be included for validation. Applying these cytokines in clinical practice and integrating them into auxiliary examinations facilitates the early detection of susceptible populations for neonatal sepsis, thereby providing a new diagnostic and therapeutic approach for neonatal sepsis.

The retention of coal fines in propped fractures impedes the efficient flow of gas and water, leading to a substantial decrease in coal seam permeability and gas production efficiency. In this article, a coal fine plugging removal agent with good dispersion stability and powerful powder-carrying capacity was developed to study the coal fine plugging removal and permeability enhancement in the propped fracture. The results show that 0.8% SDS + 0.4% NaCl + 0.8% BS-12 was the most effective coal fine plugging removal agent compounding system. Increasing the injection rate of the plugging removal agent and performing recycles of intermittent unblocking when it was used as a plugging agent will effectively enhance the gas-liquid two-phase effective permeability of propped fractures and improve the release of retained coal fines. After three recycles of intermittent unblocking, the coal fine discharging rate can be increased to more than 90%, resulting in a 3.88 times increase of the gas-liquid two-phase permeability compared to that with the single unblocking cycle. This method has important practical significance and theoretical value for solving the problem of coal fine plugging in fractures and ensuring the stable and efficient discharge of coalbed gas-water-coal fines.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) have complex pathogenetic mechanisms. Genetic, age, and environmental factors are all related to PD. Due to the unclear pathogenesis of PD and the lack of effective cure methods, it is urgent to find new targets for treating PD patients. Ferroptosis is a form of cell death that is reliant on iron and exhibits distinct morphological and mechanistic characteristics compared to other types of cell death. It encompasses a range of biological processes, including iron/lipid metabolism and oxidative stress. In recent years, research has found that ferroptosis plays a crucial role in the pathophysiological processes of neurodegenerative diseases and stroke. Therefore, ferroptosis is also closely related to PD, This article reviews the core mechanisms of ferroptosis and elucidates the correlation between PD and ferroptosis. In addition, new compounds that have emerged in recent years to exert anti PD effects by inhibiting the ferroptosis signaling pathway were summarized. I hope to further elaborate the relationship between ferroptosis and PD through the review of this article, and provide new strategies for developing PD treatments targeting ferroptosis.

The distortion of the cellular membrane transport pathway has a profound impact on cell dynamics and can drive serious physiological consequences during the process of cell sorting. SNX17 is a member of the Sorting Nexin (SNX) family and plays a crucial role in protein sorting and transport in the endocytic pathway. SNX17, SNX27, and SNX31 belong to the SNX-FERM subfamily and possess the FERM domain, which can assist in endocytic transport and lysosomal degradation. The binding partners of SNX27 have been discovered to number over 100, and SNX27 has been linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease progression, tumorigenesis, cancer progression, and metastasis. However, the role and potential mechanisms of SNX17 in human health and disease remain poorly understood, and the function of SNX17 has not been fully elucidated. In this review, we summarize the structure and basic functions of SNX protein, focusing on providing current evidence of the role and possible mechanism of SNX17 in human neurodegenerative diseases and cardiovascular diseases.

The present study aimed to explore the effects of different exercise modes on neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and metabolism of skeletal muscle-related proteins in aging rats. Ten from 38 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (3-month-old) were randomly selected into young (Y) group, while the rest were raised to 21 months old and randomly divided into elderly control (O), endurance exercise (EN) and resistance exercise (R) groups. After 8 weeks of corresponding exercises training, the gastrocnemius muscles of rats were collected, and the expression of S100B in Schwann cells was detected by immunofluorescence staining. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression levels of agglutinate protein (Agrin), low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 4 (Lrp4), muscle- specific kinase protein (MuSK), downstream tyrosine kinase 7 (Dok7), phosphorylated protein kinase B (p-Akt), phosphorylated mammalian target rapamycin (p-mTOR), and phosphorylated forkhead box O1 (p-FoxO1) in rat gastrocnemius muscles. The results showed that, endurance and resistance exercises increased the wet weight ratio of gastrocnemius muscle in the aging rats. The protein expression of S100B in the R group was significantly higher than those in the O and EN groups. Proteins related to NMJ function, including Agrin, Lrp4, MuSK, and Dok7 were significantly decreased in the O group compared with those in the Y group. Resistance exercise up-regulated these four proteins in the aging rats, whereas endurance exercise could not reverse the protein expression levels of Lrp4, MuSK and Dok7. Regarding skeletal muscle-related proteins, the O group showed down-regulated p-Akt, and p-mTOR protein expression levels and up-regulated p-FoxO1 protein expression level, compared to the Y group. Resistance and endurance exercises reversed the changes in p-mTOR and p-FoxO1 protein expression in the aging rats. These findings demonstrate that both exercise modes can enhance NMJ function, increase protein synthesis and reduce the catabolism of skeletal muscle-related proteins in aging rats, with resistance exercise showing a more pronounced effect.

BACKGROUND: Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) occurs due to acquired mutations in bone marrow progenitor cells. CHIP confers a 2-fold risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. However, there are limited data regarding specific cardiovascular phenotypes. The purpose of this study was to define the coronary artery disease phenotype of the CHIP population-based on coronary angiography. METHODS: We recruited 1142 patients from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center cardiac catheterization laboratory and performed DNA sequencing to determine CHIP status. Multivariable logistic regression models and proportional odds models were used to assess the association between CHIP status and angiography phenotypes. RESULTS: We found that 18.4% of patients undergoing coronary angiography had a CHIP mutation. Those with CHIP had a higher risk of having obstructive left main (odds ratio, 2.44 [95% CI, 1.40-4.27]; P=0.0018) and left anterior descending (odds ratio, 1.59 [1.12-2.24]; P=0.0092) coronary artery disease compared with non-CHIP carriers. We additionally found that a specific CHIP mutation, ten eleven translocase 2 (TET2), has a larger effect size on left main stenosis compared with other CHIP mutations. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first invasive assessment of coronary artery disease in CHIP and offers a description of a specific atherosclerotic phenotype in CHIP wherein there is an increased risk of obstructive left main and left anterior descending artery stenosis, especially among TET2 mutation carriers. This serves as a basis for understanding enhanced morbidity and mortality in CHIP.

INTRODUCTION: The safety and efficacy of CRS + HIPEC combined with urinary tract resection and reconstruction are controversial. This study aims to summarize the clinicopathological features and to evaluate the safety and survival prognosis of CRS + HIPEC combined with urinary tract resection and reconstruction. METHODS: The patients who underwent urinary tract resection and reconstruction as part of CRS surgery were retrospectively selected from our disease-specific database for analysis. The clinicopathological characteristics, treatment-related variables, perioperative adverse events (AEs), and survival outcomes were studied using a descriptive approach and the K-M analysis with log-rank comparison. RESULTS: Forty-nine patients were enrolled. Perioperative serious AEs (SAEs) were observed in 11 patients (22.4%), with urinary SAEs occurring in 3 patients (6.1%). Additionally, there were 23 cases (46.8%) involving urinary adverse events (UAEs). The median overall survival (OS) in the entire cohort was 59.2 (95%CI: 42.1-76.4) months. The median OS of the UAE group and No-UAE group were 59.2 months (95%CI not reached), and 50.5 (95%CI: 11.5 to 89.6) months, respectively, with no significant difference (P = 0.475). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in OS based on the grade of UAEs or the number of UAEs (P = 0.562 and P = 0.622, respectively). CONCLUSION: The combination of CRS + HIPEC with urinary tract resection and reconstruction is associated with a high incidence of Grade I-II UAEs, which do not have an impact on OS. The safety profile of this combined technique is acceptable. However, this is a retrospective single-center single-arm analysis, with limitations of generalizability and potential selection bias. The findings need high-level validation.

The functional connectivity of the default mode network is important in understanding the neuro-pathophysiological abnormalities in patients with non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy. Independent component analysis can effectively determine within and between network connectivity of different brain components. Therefore, in order to explore the association between the default mode network and other brain regions, we utilized independent component analysis to investigate the alteration of functional connectivity of the default mode network. Thirty-one patients with non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy and 31 healthy controls, matched for age, sex and years of education, were recruited. For patients and healthy controls, functional connectivity within and between the default mode network and other brain regions were evaluated by independent component analysis. Compared with healthy controls, patients with non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy showed reduced functional connectivity within the default mode network in the right cerebellar tonsil and left cerebellum posterior lobe and increased functional connectivity in the left inferior temporal and right middle frontal gyri. Furthermore, patients with non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy showed reduced functional connectivity between the default mode network and other brain regions in the left cerebellar tonsil and increased functional connectivity in the right putamen, left thalamus, right middle temporal and left middle frontal gyri. In conclusion, negative correlations between several clinical parameters and functional connectivity of the default mode network were observed. The study contributes to understanding the mechanism of functional reorganization in non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy.

The groundbreaking development of lanthanide-doped core-shell nanostructures have successfully achieved precise optical tuning of rare-earth nanocrystals, leading to significant improvements in energy transfer efficiency and facilitating multifunctional integration. Exploring the atomic-level structural, physical, and optical properties of rare-earth core-shell nanocrystals is essential for advancing our understanding of their fundamental principles and driving the development of emerging applications. However, our knowledge of the atomic-level structural details of rare-earth nanocrystal core-shell structures remains limited. This review provides a comprehensive discussion of synthesis strategies, characterization techniques, interfacial ion-mixing phenomena, strain effects, and spectral modulation in core-shell structures of rare-earth-doped nanocrystals. Additionally, we prospectively discuss the challenges encountered in studying the fine structures of rare-earth-doped core-shell nanocrystals, particularly the increasing demand for researchers to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge and utilize high-end precision instruments.

Polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) released from plastic products have been demonstrated to pose a threat to leaf litter decomposition in streams. Given the multitrophic systems of species interactions, the effects of PS NPs through different exposure routes on ecosystem functioning remain unclear. Especially dietary exposure, a frequently overlooked pathway leading to toxicity, deserves more attention. A microcosm experiment was conducted in this study to assess the effects of waterborne and dietary exposure to PS NPs on the litter-based food chain involving leaves, microbial decomposers, and detritivores (river snails). Compared to waterborne contamination, dietary contamination resulted in lower microbial enzyme activities and a significantly higher decrease in the lipid content of leaves. For river snails, their antioxidant activity was significantly increased by 20.21%-69.93%, and their leaf consumption rate was significantly reduced by 16.60% through the dietary route due to the lower lipid content of leaves. Besides, the significantly decreased nutritional quality of river snails would negatively influence their palatability to predators. The findings of this study indicate that dietary exposure to PS NPs significantly impacts microbial and detritivore activities, thus affecting their functions in the detritus food chain as well as nutrient cycling.

Objective.Assessing signal quality is crucial for biomedical signal processing, yet a precise mathematical model for defining signal quality is often lacking, posing challenges for experts in labeling signal qualities. The situation is even worse in the free living environment.Approach.We propose to model a PPG signal by the adaptive non-harmonic model (ANHM) and apply a decomposition algorithm to explore its structure, based on which we advocate a reconsideration of the concept of signal quality.Main results.We demonstrate the necessity of this reconsideration and highlight the relationship between signal quality and signal decomposition with examples recorded from the free living environment. We also demonstrate that relying on mean and instantaneous heart rates derived from PPG signals labeled as high quality by experts without proper reconsideration might be problematic.Significance.A new method, distinct from visually inspecting the raw PPG signal to assess its quality, is needed. Our proposed ANHM model, combined with advanced signal processing tools, shows potential for establishing a systematic signal decomposition based signal quality assessment model.

PURPOSE: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by inflammation of the nasal and sinus mucosa. The inflammatory patterns may differ among patients, leading to different subtypes based on the dominant inflammatory cell type. This study aimed to compare the differences in cytokine expression and disease severity between plasma cell-dominant and eosinophil-dominant subtypes in patients with CRSwNP. METHODS: This study included 53 CRSwNP patients and 19 control subjects who did not have asthma or a history of cigarette smoking. The expression of cytokines and inflammatory cells was assessed via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunohistochemistry, respectively. RESULTS: Among the cytokines analyzed, only IL-6 was significantly different between the two subtypes. A greater proportion of mast cells and IgE cells was present in plasma cell-dominant CRSwNP patients than in eosinophil-dominant group. For the three disease severity scores (LMK-CT, TPS and SNOT-22), objective scores (LMK-CT and TPS) were greater in the eosinophil-dominant CRSwNP group, while the opposite result was shown for the subjective score (SNOT-22). Additionally, the percentage of plasma cell-dominant cells was significantly positively correlated with disease severity according to the TPS and SNOT-22 scores. CONCLUSIONS: Our data revealed that plasma cell-dominant inflammation, a subtype of type 2 CRS, was significantly correlated with subjective disease severity. The study also highlights the role of IL-6, IgE and mast cells as distinguishing factors between eosinophil-dominant and plasma cell-dominant CRSwNP. This information could be useful for clinical diagnosis and personalized treatment.

Mitochondria, recognized as the cellular powerhouses, are indispensable organelles responsible for crucial cellular processes, such as energy metabolism, material synthesis, and signaling transduction. Their intricate involvement in a broad spectrum of diseases, particularly cancer, has propelled the exploration of mitochondria-targeting treatment as a promising strategy for cancer therapy. Since the groundbreaking discovery of cisplatin, the trajectory of research on the development of metal complexes have been marked by continuous advancement, giving rise to a diverse array of metallodrugs characterized by variations in ligand types, metal center properties, and oxidation states. By specifically targeting mitochondria, these metallodrugs exhibit the remarkable ability to elicit various programmed cell death pathways, encompassing apoptosis, autophagy, and ferroptosis. This review primarily focuses on recent developments in transition metal-based mitochondria-targeting agents, offering a comprehensive exploration of their capacity to induce distinct cell death modes. The aim is not only to disseminate knowledge but also to stimulate an active field of research toward new clinical applications and novel anticancer mechanisms.
