RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), the third most common stroke subtype, is associated with high mortality and disability rates. Therefore, finding effective therapies to improve neurological function after SAH is critical. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential neuroprotective effects of hydrogen in the context of SAH, specifically, by examining its role in attenuating neuronal ferroptosis and inhibiting neuroinflammation, which are exacerbated by excess iron ions after SAH. METHODS: Mice were exposed to chambers containing 3% hydrogen, and cells were cultured in incubators containing 60% hydrogen. Neurological function in mice was assessed using behavioral scores. Protein changes were detected using western blotting. Inflammatory factors were detected using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Probes, electron microscopy, and related kits were employed to detect oxidative stress and ferroptosis. RESULTS: Hydrogen improved the motor function, sensory function, and cognitive ability of mice after SAH. Additionally, hydrogen facilitated Nuclear factor erythroid 2 -related factor 2 activation, upregulated Glutathione peroxidase 4, and inhibited Toll-like receptor 4, resulting in downregulation of inflammatory responses, attenuation of oxidative stress after SAH, and inhibition of neuronal ferroptosis. CONCLUSION: Hydrogen exerts neuroprotective effects by inhibiting neuronal ferroptosis and attenuating neuroinflammation after SAH.

RESUMO

In this study, carbon dots (CDs)-encapsulated luminescent metal-organic frameworks@surface molecularly imprinted polymer (CDs@MOF@SMIP) was facilely prepared and applied as fluorescent probe for specific identification and sensitive detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) in food. Fluorescent CDs, serving as signal tags, were encapsulated within metal-organic backbones (ZIF-8), yielding luminescent MOF materials (CDs@ZIF-8). The synthesized CDs, CDs@ZIF-8 and CDs@ZIF-8@SMIP were investigated by morphological and structural characterizations (UV-Vis, XRD, FT-IR, BET, TEM). The CDs@ZIF-8@SMIP probe was demonstrated to have remarkable selectivity and sensitivity towards CAP. Its fluorescence decreased linearly with CAP concentration from 0.323 µg L-1 (0.001 µM) to 8075.0 µg L-1 (25.0 µM), featuring a low detection limit of 0.08 µg L-1. The CDs@ZIF-8@SMIP-based fluorescence strategy achieved satisfactory recoveries (95.5 % - 101.0 %) in CAP-spiked commercial foods with RSD < 4.4 % (n = 3). These results indicate that this method can effectively detect trace CAP in food matrices and has broad application prospects.

RESUMO

Poor visibility has a significant impact on road safety and can even lead to traffic accidents. The traditional means of visibility monitoring no longer meet the current needs in terms of temporal and spatial accuracy. In this work, we propose a novel deep network architecture for estimating the visibility directly from highway surveillance images. Specifically, we employ several image feature extraction methods to extract detailed structural, spectral, and scene depth features from the images. Next, we design a multi-scale fusion network to adaptively extract and fuse vital features for the purpose of estimating visibility. Furthermore, we create a real-scene dataset for model learning and performance evaluation. Our experiments demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method to the existing methods.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While it is established that video monitoring technology (compared with the use of in-person sitters) is a safe and cost-effective solution for hospitals, little is known about the impact of these approaches on nurses' stress and well-being. PURPOSE: To compare the use of video monitoring technology and in-person sitters (likely a resource reallocated from nurses) for monitoring patients on nurses' emotional labor and burnout. METHOD: An experience sampling method was conducted by surveying nurses twice a day for 3 weeks, resulting in 524 survey administrations provided by 74 nurses. The surveys included measures of daily video monitoring technology and in-person sitter use, emotional labor, emotional exhaustion, and nurse career commitment. FINDINGS: There were positive effects from video monitoring technology and negative effects of in-person sitters on emotional labor and emotional exhaustion, particularly for nurses lower in commitment. DISCUSSION: Hospital adoption of video monitoring technology has a positive impact on nurses compared with in-person sitter use.

RESUMO

A rapid and selective sorbent for the enrichment of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) from water and Chinese Baijiu samples was established using magnetic surface molecularly imprinted polymers (MSMIPs) combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The MSMIPs were synthesized using a magnetic nanosphere material with silica layer, increasing the polymer surface area as a carrier. Compared with the traditional methods, the addition of magnetic microspheres simplified the process of food substrate purification and significantly shortened the pre-concentration time. The MSMIPs adsorption conforms to the Freundlich isotherm model as multilayer adsorption on an inhomogeneous surface and the pseudo-second-order model. The developed MSMIPs combined with GC-MS method showed good linearity in DBP concentration range of 0.02-1.0 mg L-1 with low LOD (0.0054 mg L-1) and LOQ (0.018 mg L-1), and obtained good recoveries in real samples (95.2-97.2%) with RSD < 5.0% (n = 9), which were consistent with those from Chinese national standard method.

RESUMO

The neuroprotective effects of hydrogen have been demonstrated, but the mechanism is still poorly understood. In a clinical trial of inhaled hydrogen in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), we found that hydrogen reduced the accumulation of lactic acid in the nervous system. There are no studies demonstrating the regulatory effect of hydrogen on lactate and in this study we hope to further clarify the mechanism by which hydrogen regulates lactate metabolism. In cell experiments, PCR and Western Blot showed that HIF-1α was the target related to lactic acid metabolism that changed the most before and after hydrogen intervention. HIF-1α levels were suppressed by hydrogen intervention treatment. Activation of HIF-1α inhibited the lactic acid-lowering effect of hydrogen. We have also demonstrated the lactic acid-lowering effect of hydrogen in animal studies. Our work clarifies that hydrogen can regulate lactate metabolism via the HIF-1αpathway, providing new insights into the neuroprotective mechanisms of hydrogen.

RESUMO

This study identifies a unique bias faced by Black employees which makes it challenging for this group to manage their professional image. Integrating research on racial backlash, image management, and expectancy violation theory, we argue that self-promotion by Black employees will result in detrimental outcomes for this group compared to White, Hispanic, and Asian employees. Due to negative racial stereotypes related to their job competence, we hypothesize that self-promotion by Black employees will be viewed by their White managers as a violation of stereotypically appropriate behavior and will result in a backlash in the form of lower job-related outcomes. We propose that the process by which these effects occur is through manager assessments of their employees on agentic and communal traits. Our hypothesized model was tested with a stratified sample of manager-employee dyads of a large financial institution. Results indicated that self-promotion by Black employees was associated with lower job performance and person-organization fit ratings, as well as fewer idiosyncratic deals with their immediate managers compared to White, Hispanic, and Asian employees. Implications of the divergent consequences of self-promotion for Black employees relative to other racial groups are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

RESUMO

Steeping process is an important factor for aroma release of tea, which has rarely been investigated for the aroma changes of raw Pu-erh tea (RAPT). In addition, the comprehensive aroma characteristics identification of RAPT infusion is necessary. In this study, GC-IMS coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) was used to clarify the difference of volatile profiles during the steeping process of RAPT. Furthermore, the volatiles contained in the RAPT infusion were extracted by three pretreatment methods (HS-SPME, SBSE, and SAFE) and identified using GC-O-MS. According to the odor activity value, 28 of 66 compounds were categorized as aroma-active compounds. Aroma recombination and omission experiments showed that "fatty", "green", "fruity", and "floral" are considered to be the main aroma attributes of RAPT infusion with a strong relationship with 1-octen-3-one, 1-octen-3-ol, (E)-2-octenal, ß-ionone, linalool, etc. This study will contribute a better understanding of the mechanism of the RAPT steeping process and volatile generation.

RESUMO

In this study, the volatile fingerprints of GC-IMS showed great differences on the volatile profiles of Molixiang grapes collected from three different regions of China, which suggested that aroma of table grapes could be largely impacted by origin areas. Butyl lactate, E-2-octenal and Z-2-pentanol were mainly contained in MLX-A, the grapes sampled from Ningbo, China. High contents of p-cymene, styrene and γ-terpinene were observed in MLX-B grapes sampled from Beizhen, China. In addition, benzaldehyde and methyl benzoate were major contained in MLX-C grapes sampled from Zhangzhou, China. The PCA results revealed effective differentiation of samples from different geographical origin based on the information obtained from GC-IMS. Furthermore, sensory evaluation showed that the aroma characters of grapes from different geographical origin were significantly different (P ≤ 0.05). E-2-octenal, styrene and benzaldehyde might serve as the geographical marker compounds of origin area based on the results of GC-IMS analysis and sensory evaluation.

RESUMO

Drawing upon social comparison theory, we developed and tested a model to examine potential negative coworker reactions toward proactive employees. We theorized that a focal employee's proactive personality is positively related with his or her high relative standing in the group, which in turn exposes him or her to being the target of coworker envy. This may then reduce the focal employee's received help from coworkers and give rise to coworker undermining. We further reasoned that employee prosocial motivation moderates the serial mediated relationships. Our hypotheses were generally supported in 3 field studies involving a total of 1,069 employees from 223 groups. Proactive personality was negatively and indirectly related to received help from coworkers, via relative leader-member exchange (RLMX) and relative job performance, and then via being envied by coworkers (Study 1). Results also generally supported the positive and indirect effect of proactive personality on coworker undermining via the same set of sequential mediators (e.g., RLMX and then being envied, Study 2). The indirect effects of proactive personality on coworker helping and undermining (e.g., via relative job performance and coworker envy) were only significant when employees' prosocial motivation was low (Study 3). This research contributes to a more complete and balanced theorization of the influences of proactive personality in organizations. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

RESUMO

The scientific quality of social and personality psychology has been debated at great length in recent years. Despite research on the prevalence of Questionable Research Practices (QRPs) and the replicability of particular findings, the impact of the current discussion on research practices is unknown. The current studies examine whether and how practices have changed, if at all, over the last 10 years. In Study 1, we surveyed 1,166 social and personality psychologists about how the current debate has affected their perceptions of their own and the field's research practices. In Study 2, we coded the research practices and critical test statistics from social and personality psychology articles published in 2003-2004 and 2013-2014. Together, these studies suggest that (a) perceptions of the current state of the field are more pessimistic than optimistic; (b) the discussion has increased researchers' intentions to avoid QRPs and adopt proposed best practices, (c) the estimated replicability of research published in 2003-2004 may not be as bad as many feared, and (d) research published in 2013-2014 shows some improvement over research published in 2003-2004, a result that suggests the field is evolving in a positive direction. RESUMO

Swertia mussotii Franch. is an important traditional Tibetan medicinal plant with pharmacological properties effective in the treatment of various ailments including hepatitis. Secoiridoids are the major bioactive compounds in S. mussotii. To better understand the secoiridoid biosynthesis pathway, we generated transcriptome sequences from the root, leaf, stem, and flower tissues, and performed de novo sequence assembly, yielding 98,613 unique transcripts with an N50 of 1,085 bp. Putative functions could be assigned to 35,029 transcripts (35.52%) based on BLAST searches against annotation databases including GO and KEGG. The expression profiles of 39 candidate transcripts encoding the key enzymes for secoiridoid biosynthesis were examined in different S. mussotii tissues, validated by qRT-PCR, and compared with the homologous genes from S. japonica, a species in the same family, unveiling the gene expression, regulation, and conservation of the pathway. The examination of the accumulated levels of three bioactive compounds, sweroside, swertiamarin, and gentiopicroside, revealed their considerable variations in different tissues, with no significant correlation with the expression profiles of key genes in the pathway, suggesting complex biological behaviours in the coordination of metabolite biosynthesis and accumulation. The genomic dataset and analyses presented here lay the foundation for further research on this important medicinal plant.

RESUMO

Two studies were conducted to replicate and extend previous findings on the effect of uncooperative behavior on group cooperation (the "bad apple" effect). Study 1 (56 women, 40 men; M age = 23.5 yr.) manipulated information about contributions from the bad apple, controlling for overall contributions to a group account. Study 2 (50 women, 34 men; M age = 20.4 yr.) compared the effects of a bad apple and a good apple on cooperation. The social value orientation of participants was measured to explore individual differences in the bad apple effect. The results revealed a bad apple (a) decreased cooperation among individuals with proself and prosocial orientations in Study 1, and (b) had a greater effect than a good apple on those who were proself compared to prosocial in Study 2.
