RESUMO

In recent years, the demand for clinical bone grafting has increased. As a new solution for orthopedic implants, polyether ether ketone (PEEK, crystalline PAEK) has excellent comprehensive performance and has been practically applied in clinic. In this research, a noteworthy elevated scheme to enhance the performance of PEEK scaffolds was presented. The amorphous aggregated poly (aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) resin was prepared as the matrix material, which maintained high mechanical strength and could be processed through solution. So, the tissue engineering scaffolds with multilevel pores could be printed by low-temperature deposited manufacturing (LDM) to improve biologically inert scaffolds with smooth surfaces. Also, the feature of PAEK's solution processing is profitable to uniformly add the functional components for bone repair. Ultimately, A system of orthopedic implantable PAEK material based on intermolecular interactions, surface topology, and surface modification was established. The specific steps include synthesizing PAEK that contain polar carboxyl structures, preparing bioinks and fabricating scaffolds by LDM, preparation of scaffolds with strontium-doped mineralized coatings, evaluation of their osteogenic properties in vitro and in vivo, and investigation on the effect and mechanism of scaffolds in promoting osteogenic differentiation. This work provides an upgraded system of PAEK implantable materials for clinical application. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Stem cell-based therapy (SCT) is an important component of regenerative therapy that brings hope to many patients. After decades of development, SCT has made significant progress in the research of various diseases, and the market size has also expanded significantly. The transition of SCT from small-scale, customized experiments to routine clinical practice requires the assistance of standards. Many countries and international organizations around the world have developed corresponding SCT standards, which have effectively promoted the further development of the SCT industry. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review to introduce the clinical application progress of SCT and focus on the development status of SCT standardization. RESULTS: We first briefly introduced the types and characteristics of stem cells, and summarized the current clinical application and market development of SCT. Subsequently, we focused on the development status of SCT-related standards as of now from three levels: the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), important international organizations, and national organizations. Finally, we provided perspectives and conclusions on the significance and challenges of SCT standardization. CONCLUSIONS: Standardization plays an important role in the sustained, rapid and healthy development of SCT.

RESUMO

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), as a high-performance polymer, is widely used for bone defect repair due to its homogeneous modulus of elasticity of human bone, good biocompatibility, excellent chemical stability and projectability. However, the highly hydrophobic surface of PEEK is biologically inert, which makes it difficult for cells and proteins to attach, and is accompanied by the development of infections that ultimately lead to failure of PEEK implants. In order to further enhance the potential of PEEK as an orthopedic implant, researchers have explored modification methods such as surface modification by physical and chemical means and the addition of bioactive substances to PEEK-based materials to enhance the mechanical properties, osteogenic activity and antimicrobial properties of PEEK. However, these current modification methods still have obvious shortcomings in terms of cost, maneuverability, stability and cytotoxicity, which still need to be explored by researchers. This paper reviews some of the modification methods that have been used to improve the performance of PEEK over the last three years in anticipation of the need for researchers to design PEEK orthopedic implants that better meet clinical needs.

RESUMO

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are considered the gold standard for causal inference. With a sufficient sample size, randomization removes confounding up to the time of randomization and allows the treatment effect to be isolated. However, RCTs may have limited generalizability and transportability and are often not feasible in addiction research due to ethical or logistical constraints. The importance of observational studies from real-world settings has been increasingly recognized in research on health. This paper provides an overview of modern approaches to designing observational studies that enable causal inference. It illustrates three key techniques, Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs), modified Disjunctive Cause Criterion and Target Trial Emulation, and discusses the strengths and limitations of their applications.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Medicinal cannabis is now legal in 44 US jurisdictions. Between 2020 and 2021 alone, four US jurisdictions legalised medicinal cannabis. The aim of this study is to identify themes in medicinal cannabis tweets from US jurisdictions with different legal statuses of cannabis from January to June 2021. METHODS: A total of 25,099 historical tweets from 51 US jurisdictions were collected using Python. Content analysis was performed on a random sample of tweets accounting for the population size of each US jurisdictions (n = 750). Results were presented separately by tweets posted from jurisdictions where all cannabis use (non-medicinal and medicinal) is 'fully legalised', 'illegal' and legal for 'medical-only' use. RESULTS: Four themes were identified: 'Policy', 'Therapeutic value', 'Sales and industry opportunities' and 'Adverse effects'. Most of the tweets were posted by the public. The most common theme was related to 'Policy' (32.5%-61.5% of the tweets). Tweets on 'Therapeutic value' were prevalent in all jurisdictions and accounted for 23.8%-32.1% of the tweets. Sales and promotional activities were prominent even in illegal jurisdictions (12.1%-26.5% of the tweets). Fewer than 10% of tweets were about intoxication and withdrawal symptoms. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This study has explored if content themes of medicinal cannabis tweets differed by cannabis legal status. Most tweets were pro-cannabis and they were related to policy, therapeutic value, and sales and industry opportunities. Tweets on unsubstantiated health claims, adverse effects and crime warrants continued surveillance as these conversations could allow us to estimate cannabis-related harms to inform health surveillance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Spinal disorders affect millions of people worldwide, and can cause significant disability and pain. The paraspinal muscles, located on either side of the spinal column, play a crucial role in the movement, support, and stabilization of the spine. Many spinal disorders can affect paraspinal muscles, as evidenced by changes in their morphology, including hypertrophy, atrophy, and degeneration. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this review were to examine the current literature on the relationship between the paraspinal muscles and spinal disorders, summarize the methods used in previous studies, and identify areas for future research. METHODS: We reviewed studies on the morphological characteristics of the paravertebral muscle and discussed their relationship with spinal disorders, as well as the current limitations and future research directions. RESULTS: The paraspinal muscles play a critical role in spinal disorders and are important targets for the treatment and prevention of spinal disorders. Clinicians should consider the role of the paraspinal muscles in the development and progression of spinal disorders and incorporate assessments of the paraspinal muscle function in clinical practice. CONCLUSION: The findings of this review highlight the need for further research to better understand the relationship between the paraspinal muscles and spinal disorders, and to develop effective interventions to improve spinal health and reduce the burden of spinal disorders.

RESUMO

ISSUES ADDRESSED: The increase of youth vaping in Australia has raised concerns, especially with increasing promotions of vaping products. We observed the visibility of vaping products near high-adolescent-traffic areas. METHODS: We examined stores within walking distance of high schools and the central business district (CBD) in Brisbane, Australia, observing the number and proportion of stores selling or displaying vaping products. Using an observational approach, we analysed advertisements and open displays of vaping products at tobacconists, vape stores, and convenience stores. RESULTS: We identified 61 eligible stores located near schools or in the CBD. Overall, 20% of stores displayed vaping products externally, with higher proportions among vape stores (78%) compared to tobacconists (36%). Additionally, 46% of stores had visible interior displays, with vape stores (89%) displaying them more frequently than tobacconists (71%). Among the 28 stores displaying vaping products, 57% included warnings, one store featured only flavoured products, and 25% showcased nicotine-containing products. Youth-appealing features were present in all but one store, with cartoons (61%) as the most common feature. CONCLUSION: Vapes were displayed near high schools and in the city, often featuring youth-appealing features, such as colours and flavours. SO WHAT?: The exposure to such promotions could normalise vaping and contribute to increased youth uptake. Continued monitoring of vaping product promotions is essential, particularly considering recent policy changes.

RESUMO

Intervertebral disc degeneration is thought to be a major contributor to low back pain, the etiology of which is complex and not yet fully understood. To compensate for the lack of drug and surgical treatment, mesenchymal stem cells have been proposed for regenerative treatment of intervertebral discs in recent years, and encouraging results have been achieved in related trials. Mesenchymal stem cells can be derived from different parts of the body, among which mesenchymal stem cells isolated from the fetal umbilical cord have excellent performance in terms of difficulty of acquisition, differentiation potential, immunogenicity and ethical risk. This makes it possible for umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells to replace the most widely used bone marrow-derived and adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells as the first choice for regenerating intervertebral discs. However, the survival of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells within the intervertebral disc is a major factor affecting their regenerative capacity. In recent years biomaterial scaffolds in tissue engineering have aided the survival of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells by mimicking the natural extracellular matrix. This seems to provide a new idea for the application of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells. This article reviews the structure of the intervertebral disc, disc degeneration, and the strengths and weaknesses of common treatment methods. We focus on the cell source, cell characteristics, mechanism of action and related experiments to summarize the umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells and explore the feasibility of tissue engineering technology of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells. Hoping to provide new ideas for the treatment of disc degeneration.

RESUMO

AIMS: E-cigarette and tobacco-related content on social media continues to rise from lax restrictions on both personal and promotional posts. This content has been linked to various mechanisms of increased e-cigarette and tobacco use (i.e., lower risk perceptions and increased susceptibility). This study aimed to synthesis the association between exposure to e-cigarette and tobacco-related content and youth behaviours and attitudes. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO and Web of Science. Studies published post-2004 reporting effect estimates for exposure or engagement with e-cigarette or tobacco content on social media and behaviour or attitude outcomes were included. RESULTS: Thirty-two studies (N = 274,283, aged 9 to 25 years) were included for synthesis. Meta-analyses revealed significant associations between engagement with tobacco content and use (OR 2.21; 95% CI = 1.27-3.82, p =.005; I2 = 96.4%), exposure to tobacco content and never users' lower risk perceptions (OR 0.68; 95% CI = 0.49-0.91; p =.011; I2 = 78.2%), and exposure to e-cigarette content and use (OR 1.37; 95% CI = 0.99-1.88; p = 0.058; I2 = 64.4%). There was no observed relationship between exposure to tobacco content and ever users' risk perceptions (OR 0.83; 95% CI = 0.61-1.13; p =.231; I2 = 83.5%). Qualitative synthesis found significant associations between tobacco exposure and increased current use and pro-tobacco attitudes; e-cigarette exposure and increased susceptibility and lower risk perceptions; tobacco engagement and increased susceptibility; e-cigarette engagement and increased use; dual exposure and increased susceptibility; and dual engagement and increased dual use. Mixed findings were identified for the influence of e-cigarette exposure on attitudes, tobacco exposure on susceptibility, dual exposure on dual use behaviours, and dual engagement on dual susceptibility. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest an association between exposure and engagement to e-cigarette or tobacco products on social media and use or pro-use attitudes among youth. Further substantive research in the area of youth-specific use and attitudes following exposure and engagement with e-cigarette and tobacco content is needed to quantify this association.

RESUMO

Background: Bone density measurement is an important examination for the diagnosis and screening of osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to develop a deep learning (DL) system for automatic measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) for osteoporosis screening using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) images. Methods: This retrospective study included 500 individuals who underwent LDCT scanning from April 2018 to July 2021. All images were manually annotated by a radiologist for the cancellous bone of target vertebrae and post-processed using quantitative computed tomography (QCT) software to identify osteoporosis. Patients were divided into the training, validation, and testing sets in a ratio of 6:2:2 using a 4-fold cross validation method. A localization model using faster region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) was trained to identify and locate the target vertebrae (T12-L2), then a 3-dimensional (3D) AnatomyNet was trained to finely segment the cancellous bone of target vertebrae in the localized image. A 3D DenseNet was applied for calculating BMD. The Dice coefficient was used to evaluate segmentation performance. Linear regression and Bland-Altman (BA) analyses were performed to compare the calculated BMD values using the proposed system with QCT. The diagnostic performance of the system for osteoporosis and osteopenia was evaluated with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: Our segmentation model achieved a mean Dice coefficient of 0.95, with Dice coefficients greater than 0.9 accounting for 96.6%. The correlation coefficient (R2) and mean errors between the proposed system and QCT in the testing set were 0.967 and 2.21 mg/cm3, respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) of the ROC was 0.984 for detecting osteoporosis and 0.993 for distinguishing abnormal BMD (osteopenia and osteoporosis). Conclusions: The fully automated DL-based system is able to perform automatic BMD calculation for opportunistic osteoporosis screening with high accuracy using LDCT scans.

RESUMO

The application of three-dimensional printing technology in the medical field has great potential for bone defect repair, especially personalized and biological repair. As a green manufacturing process that does not involve liquefication through heating, low-temperature deposition manufacturing (LDM) is a promising type of rapid prototyping manufacturing and has been widely used to fabricate scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. The scaffolds fabricated by LDM have a multi-scale controllable pore structure and interconnected micropores, which are beneficial for the repair of bone defects. At the same time, different types of cells or bioactive factor can be integrated into three-dimensional structural scaffolds through LDM. Herein, we introduced LDM technology and summarize its applications in bone tissue engineering. We divide the scaffolds into four categories according to the skeleton materials and discuss the performance and limitations of the scaffolds. The ideas presented in this review have prospects in the development and application of LDM scaffolds.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: E-cigarette marketing strategies are targeting and appealing to youth, particularly through social media. This study examined the longitudinal relationship between recalled exposure to e-cigarette advertisements on social media and across five traditional advertising mediums, and e-cigarette use, a year later. DESIGN: Weighted regression analyses of waves 4 (W4; 2017), 4.5 (W4.5; 2018) and 5 (W5; 2019) from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. SETTING: United States. PARTICIPANTS: Youth aged 12-17 years at W4 or W4.5 (N = 16,671). MEASUREMENTS: We examined the association between past 30-day recalled exposure to six different e-cigarette advertisement mediums (gas stations/convenience stores, social media/websites, newspaper/magazines, radio, billboard, TV) in W4.5 and past 30-day and past 12-month e-cigarette use in W5, while controlling for W4 e-cigarette use and covariates such as sociodemographic variables, academic performance, peer cigarette/e-cigarette use and other substance use. Associations between recalled exposure (W4.5) and lifetime use (W5) among e-cigarette naïve youth at W4.5 (N = 8,914) were also assessed. FINDINGS: Past 12-month and past 30-day e-cigarette use was significantly associated with recalled exposure to e-cigarette advertisement on social media/websites (aOR = 1.65 [99.17 %CI = 1.36,1.99; aOR = 1.49 [99.17 %CI = 1.13, 1.97]) and gas stations/convenience stores (aOR = 1.33; [99.17 %CI = 1.11,1.58]; aOR = 1.27 [99.17 %CI = 1.03,1.58]). Exposure to e-cigarette advertisement on social media/websites (aOR = 1.35 [99.17 %CI = 1.04,1.74]) and gas stations/convenience stores (aOR = 1.67 [99.17 %CI = 1.31,2.13]) was significantly associated with lifetime e-cigarette use among baseline youth who were e-cigarette naïve. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to e-cigarette advertisement on social media/websites and gas stations/convenience stores was associated with youth e-cigarette use a year later. Stricter restrictions on marketing in these mediums is needed to limit youth exposure to e-cigarette marketing messages if we are to reduce e-cigarette use.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and synthesise the findings of modelling studies on the population impacts of e-cigarette use and to identify potential gaps requiring future investigation. DATA SOURCE AND STUDY SELECTION: Four databases were searched for modelling studies of e-cigarette use on population health published between 2010 and 2023. A total of 32 studies were included. DATA EXTRACTION: Data on study characteristics, model attributes and estimates of population impacts including health outcomes and smoking prevalence were extracted from each article. The findings were synthesised narratively. DATA SYNTHESIS: The introduction of e-cigarettes was predicted to lead to decreased smoking-related mortality, increased quality-adjusted life-years and reduced health system costs in 29 studies. Seventeen studies predicted a lower prevalence of cigarette smoking. Models that predicted negative population impacts assumed very high e-cigarette initiation rates among non-smokers and that e-cigarette use would discourage smoking cessation by a large margin. The majority of the studies were based on US population data and few studies included factors other than smoking status, such as jurisdictional tobacco control policies or social influence. CONCLUSIONS: A population increase in e-cigarette use may result in lower smoking prevalence and reduced burden of disease in the long run, especially if their use can be restricted to assisting smoking cessation. Given the assumption-dependent nature of modelling outcomes, future modelling studies should consider incorporating different policy options in their projection exercises, using shorter time horizons and expanding their modelling to low-income and middle-income countries where smoking rates remain relatively high.

RESUMO

Due to the high prevalence and rates of disability associated with musculoskeletal system diseases, more thorough research into diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatments is required. One of the key contributors to the emergence of diseases of the musculoskeletal system is thought to be changes in the biomechanics of the human musculoskeletal system. However, there are some defects concerning personal analysis or dynamic responses in current biomechanical research methodologies. Digital twin (DT) was initially an engineering concept that reflected the mirror image of a physical entity. With the application of medical image analysis and artificial intelligence (AI), it entered our lives and showed its potential to be further applied in the medical field. Consequently, we believe that DT can take a step towards personalized healthcare by guiding the design of industrial personalized healthcare systems. In this perspective article, we discuss the limitations of traditional biomechanical methods and the initial exploration of DT in musculoskeletal system diseases. We provide a new opinion that DT could be an effective solution for musculoskeletal system diseases in the future, which will help us analyze the real-time biomechanical properties of the musculoskeletal system and achieve personalized medicine.

RESUMO

ISSUES: Established literature suggests that electronic cigarettes (EC) are more effective than traditional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) as a smoking cessation aid, but the factors that mediate this difference remain poorly understood. We examine how adverse events (AE) associated with EC use relative to NRTs differ, with the view that differences in AEs experienced may drive differences in use and compliance. APPROACH: Papers for inclusion were identified via a three-tiered search strategy. Eligible articles involved healthy participants and compared nicotine ECs to non-nicotine ECs or NRTs and reported frequency of AE as an outcome. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted to compare the likelihood for each of the AEs between nicotine ECs, non-nicotine placebo ECs and NRTs. KEY FINDINGS: A total of 3756 papers were identified, of which 18 were meta-analysed (10 cross-sectional and 8 randomised controlled trials). Meta-analytic results found no significant difference in the rates of reported AEs (i.e., cough, oral irritation, nausea) between nicotine ECs and NRTs, and between nicotine and non-nicotine placebo ECs. IMPLICATIONS: The variation in the incidence of AEs likely does not explain user preferences of ECs to NRTs. Incidence of common AEs reported because of EC and NRT use did not differ significantly. Future work will need to quantify both the adverse and favourable effects of ECs to understand the experiential mechanisms that drive the high uptake of nicotine ECs relative to established NRTs. CONCLUSIONS: There is inconclusive evidence on the incidence of AEs experience when using ECs compared to NRTs, possibly given the small sample size of studies.

RESUMO

The constant, substantial price fluctuations of cryptocurrency allow traders to engage in highly speculative trading that closely resembles gambling. With significant financial loss associated with adverse mental health outcomes, it is important to investigate the impact that market participation has on mental health. Therefore, we conducted interviews with 17 participants who self-reported problems due to trading. Thematic analysis was conducted revealing themes: (1) factors in engagement, (2) impacts of trading and (3) harm reduction. Factors in engagement captured factors that motivated and sustained cryptocurrency trading. Impacts of trading outlined how cryptocurrency trading positively and negatively impacted participants. Harm reduction described methods participants employed to reduce mental distress from trading. Our study provides novel insights into the adverse impacts of cryptocurrency trading across multiple domains, especially mental health, relationships and finances. They also indicate the importance of further research on effective coping strategies for distress caused by financial loss from trading. Additionally, our study reveals the significant role social environments play on participants' expectations and intentions regarding cryptocurrency trading. These social networks extend beyond real-life relationship to include celebrity and influencer endorsement. This encourages investigation into the content of cryptocurrency promotions and the influence they have on individuals' decision to trade.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Heated tobacco products (HTPs) are electronic devices that heat process tobacco to release an aerosol containing nicotine and other chemicals. Limited data exist on world-wide HTP use prevalence. This meta-analytic review estimated the prevalence of HTP use by country, World Health Organization (WHO) region, year, sex/gender and age. METHODS: Five databases (Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, PubMed and PsycINFO) were searched between January 2015 and May 2022. Included studies reported the prevalence of HTP use in nationally representative samples post-modern HTP device market entry (2015). A random-effects meta-analysis was used to estimate overall prevalence for life-time, current and daily HTP use. RESULTS: Forty-five studies (n = 1 096 076) from 42 countries/areas from the European Region (EUR), Western Pacific Region (WPR), Region of the Americas (AMR) and African Region (AFR) met inclusion criteria. Estimated pooled prevalence for life-time, current and daily HTP use was 4.87% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 4.16, 5.63], 1.53% (95% CI = 1.22, 1.87) and 0.79% (95% CI = 0.48, 1.18), respectively, across all years (2015-22). Life-time HTP use prevalence significantly increased by 3.39% for WPR [0.52% (95% CI = 0.25, 0.88) in 2015 to 3.91% (95% CI = 2.30, 5.92) in 2019] and 5.58% for EUR [1.13% (95% CI = 0.59, 1.97) in 2016 to 6.98% (95% CI = 5.69, 8.39) in 2020]. Current HTP use increased by 10.45% for WPR [0.12% (95% CI = 0, 0.37) in 2015 to 10.57% (95% CI = 5.59, 16.88) in 2020] and 1.15% for EUR [0% (95% CI = 0, 0.35) in 2016 to 1.15% (95% CI = 0.87, 1.47) in 2020]. Meta-regression revealed higher current HTP use in WPR [3.80% (95% CI = 2.88, 4.98)] compared with EUR [1.40% (95% CI = 1.09, 1.74)] and AMR [0.81% (95% CI = 0.46, 1.26)] and for males [3.45% (95% CI = 2.56, 4.47)] compared with females [1.82% (95% CI = 1.39, 2.29)]. Adolescents had higher life-time HTP use prevalence [5.25% (95% CI = 4.36, 6.21) than adults [2.45% (95% CI = 0.79, 4.97)]. Most studies scored a low risk of sampling bias due to their nationally representative sampling. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of HTPs use increased in the EUR and WPR between 2015 and 2020, with nearly 5% of the included populations having ever tried HTP and 1.5% identifying as current users during the study period.

RESUMO

Bone defect disease causes damage to people's lives and property, and how to effectively promote bone regeneration is still a big clinical challenge. Most of the current repair methods focus on filling the defects, which has a poor effect on bone regeneration. Therefore, how to effectively promote bone regeneration while repairing the defects at the same time has become a challenge for clinicians and researchers. Strontium (Sr) is a trace element required by the human body, which mainly exists in human bones. Due to its unique dual properties of promoting the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts and inhibiting osteoclast activity, it has attracted extensive research on bone defect repair in recent years. With the deep development of research, the mechanisms of Sr in the process of bone regeneration in the human body have been clarified, and the effects of Sr on osteoblasts, osteoclasts, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and the inflammatory microenvironment in the process of bone regeneration have been widely recognized. Based on the development of technology such as bioengineering, it is possible that Sr can be better loaded onto biomaterials. Even though the clinical application of Sr is currently limited and relevant clinical research still needs to be developed, Sr-composited bone tissue engineering biomaterials have achieved satisfactory results in vitro and in vivo studies. The Sr compound together with biomaterials to promote bone regeneration will be a development direction in the future. This review will present a brief overview of the relevant mechanisms of Sr in the process of bone regeneration and the related latest studies of Sr combined with biomaterials. The aim of this paper is to highlight the potential prospects of Sr functionalized in biomaterials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: At present, a variety of posterior lumbar internal fixation implantation methods have been developed, which makes it difficult for spine surgeons to choose. The stress distribution of the internal fixation system is one of the important indexes to evaluate these technologies. Common insertion technologies include Roy Camille, Magerl, Krag, AO, and Weinstein insertion techniques. This study aimed to compare the distribution of von Mises stresses in different screw fixation systems established by these insertion technologies. METHODS: Here, the three-dimensional finite element (FE) method was selected to evaluate the postoperative stress distribution of internal fixation. Following different pedicle screw insertion techniques, five single-segment transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) models were established after modeling and validation of the L1-S1 vertebrae FE model. RESULTS: By analyzing the data, we found that stress concentration phenomenon was in all the models. Additionally, Roy-Camille, Krag, AO, and Weinstein insertion techniques led to the great stress on lumbar vertebra, intervertebral disc, and screw-rod fixation systems. Therefore, we hope that the results can provide ideas for clinical work and development of pedicle screws in the future. It is worth noting that flexion, unaffected side lateral bending, and affected side axial rotation should be limited for the patients with cages implanted. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our method obtained the results that Magerl insertion technique was the relatively safe approach for pedicle screw implantation due to its relatively dispersive stress in TLIF models.
