BACKGROUND: During COVID-19 pandemic, physical inactivity and inactivity-related health problems have deepened in many individuals, including office workers. It is not yet known whether there are exercise programs through telerehabilitation that will provide rapid relief in a short time in office workers who apply part or full-time teleworking system. OBJECTIVE: To comparatively investigate influences of short-term upper extremity exercise trainings (UEET) on pain, musculoskeletal discomforts (MSD), physical activity (PA), mood, and quality of life (QOL) in office workers during COVID-19 restrictions. METHODS: Thirty office workers were divided into exercise (EG) (UEET and walking advice) and control (CG) (walking advice) groups. The UEET was applied for at least 20-40 minutes/day, 5-7 days/week for a one week between February 2022 and June 2022. Office workers' pain, MSD, PA level, mood and QOL were measured. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics of groups (EG: 37.8±7.04 years, CG: 41.6±7.97 years) were similar (p >  0.05). Following UEET, scores of office workers in EG on total step count, vigorous PA, moderate-intensity PA, walking, total PA, physical functioning, and body pain subscales of QOL significantly increased compared to scores of office workers in CG, while scores on neck, back and hip discomforts and anxiety and depression significantly decreased (p <  0.05). CONCLUSIONS: One-week UEET and walking advice can improve office workers' daily step counts, MSD, PA levels, mood, and QOL. Office workers who have a busy work schedule may do these UEET and walking exercises in break times to relieve perception of discomfort.

OBJECTIVE: Finger splints are used as a treatment option in tendon, bone, and soft tissue injuries. For immobilization, custom-made splints and prefabricated finger splints are used. In splints made for immobilization, it is aimed to limit joint movement. The aim of our study is to reveal how much custom-made splints and prefabricated finger splints limit joint motion (flexion angle in proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints). METHODS: Custom-made splints and prefabricated finger splints were applied to the second fingers of the dominant side in a total of 40 individuals, 20 women and 20 men, not having any health problems. Individuals were asked to flex and joint motion was measured with the iPhone compass application. RESULTS: The mean distal interphalangeal joint angle values of the participants measured by prefabricated finger splints were found to be 24.27±8.29, and the mean distal interphalangeal joint angle values measured by custom-made splints was 0.52±1.50. There was a difference between the participants' distal interphalangeal joint angle values measured by prefabricated finger splints and custom-made splints (p<0.001). distal interphalangeal joint angle values measured with custom-made splints were significantly smaller than those measured with prefabricated finger splint. The mean of the participants' proximal interphalangeal joint angle values measured by prefabricated finger splints was 16.55±7.90, and the proximal interphalangeal joint angle values measured by custom-made splints was "0" for all participants. There was a difference between the participants' proximal interphalangeal joint angle values measured by prefabricated finger splints and custom-made splints (p<0.001). Distal interphalangeal joint angle values measured with custom-made splints were significantly smaller than those measured with prefabricated finger splints. CONCLUSION: According to our study, custom-made splints can significantly reduce the flexion of the finger interphalangeal joints compared to prefabricated finger splints.

OBJECTIVE: There is limited information in literature on how coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic period affects people with asthma. This study aimed to compare levels of physical activity, stress, and fear and quality of life and sleep quality between patients with asthma and healthy individuals during the pandemic. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with asthma and 22 healthy individuals aged between 18 and 65 years were included. Physical activity level using "International Physical Activity Questionnaire"; stress level, using "Perceived Stress Scale-14"; fear level, using "Fear of COVID-19 Scale"; sleep quality, using "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index"; and quality of life, using "World Health Organization Quality of Life" were evaluated. RESULTS: Total physical activity level, vigorous physical activity level, and walking score of patients with asthma were lower than healthy individuals (p < .05). Sitting time of patients with asthma was higher than healthy individuals (p < .05). Subjective sleep quality, latency, duration, efficiency, sleeping medication use, and daytime dysfunction of both were similar (p > .05). Only sleep disturbance score of patients with asthma were higher than healthy individuals (p < .05). Quality of life, stress, and fear levels of both were similar (p > .05). CONCLUSION: During pandemic, patients with asthma are more inactive than healthy individuals regardless of the presence of a chronic disease; pandemic negatively affected stress, fear levels, sleep, and quality of life. To minimize the effects of restrictions and psychological burden caused by pandemic and to encourage patients with asthma to perform physical activities, conducting studies to control stress levels and increasing quality of life and sleep of all individuals are important.

BACKGROUND: Proprioception is important for stability of body segments, postural control, and functionality. However, there are no studies in literature showing effects of online Pilates exercises that create proprioceptive inputs on vertebra on trunk proprioception. AIMS: This study aims to reveal effect of online Pilates exercises conducted on trunk proprioception and core muscle endurance in healthy individuals. METHODS: We included thirty-three healthy individuals between ages of 18 and 25 in study. Individuals were randomly divided into two groups. There were 17 individuals in Pilates group (PG), and 16 individuals in control group (CG). The PG was given online Pilates exercises by the physiotherapist in groups 3 days a week for 6 weeks, 1 h a day. There was no exercise program recommended for individuals in CG. We evaluated trunk proprioception with an inclinometer, core muscle endurance with three core endurance tests created by McGill, and prone bridge tests. All evaluations completed just before start of study and 2 days after 6-week training. RESULTS: Two groups had similar demographic characteristics, and there was no difference between baseline measurements (p > 0.05). While improvement observed in PG in trunk proprioception and all of core muscle endurance tests (p < 0.05), no statistically significant difference reported in CG (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We revealed that online Pilates exercises performed at mat level for 6 weeks in healthy individuals had positive effects on trunk proprioception and core muscle endurance with this study. Contribution of Pilates exercises to development of both muscular endurance and proprioceptive senses, even if performed at a distance, is important.

Background/aim: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries cause mechanoreceptor loss in the joint; therefore, proprioceptive deficits are observed after injury. In particular, proprioceptive measurements made in the functional position give more accurate results, and this is an area that requires further studies. This study aimed to evaluate proprioception in patients who had undergone ACL reconstruction (ACLR) in functional positions used in daily life (closed kinetic chain position), according to joint angles where ACL injuries occur more frequently, in comparison with healthy controls. Materials and methods: Thirty-four participants who underwent ACLR using a hamstring tendon graft (aged 29.18 ± 8.16 years; body mass index (BMI), 26.58 ± 4.02 kg/cm2) and 31 healthy participants (aged 27.35 ± 5.74 years; BMI, 24.76 ± 2.98 kg/cm2) were included. Proprioception was assessed with an active angle repetition test, using an inclinometer in the closed kinetic chain position while standing. Participants were asked to perform single-leg squats until the angle at the knee joint was 30°. After the targeted angle was defined, the participants were asked to find the targeted angle. The difference between the targeted angle and the angle reached by the participants was calculated. Results: A statistically significant difference in the active joint position sense was found among the ACLR extremity, uninvolved extremity, and control extremity (p < 0.05). The proprioceptive sense between the two extremities in the ACLR group was similar, and the proprioceptive sense was worse than that of the control group. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate closed kinetic chain position in patients who underwent ACLR, and it showed that proprioceptive sense was still poor in patients with ACLR compared with the control group, even if an average of 24 months have elapsed since surgery.

Background: Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive disease whose diagnosis involves determination of clinical and demographic characteristics. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with lymphedema and their various diagnoses. We studied patients who were referred for physiotherapy services at any point during the years 2009 through 2019. Methods: Retrospective data were collected from the files of 430 lymphedema patients. The type, cause, localization, stage, and severity of lymphedema and physiotherapy needs were analyzed and reported. Results: Primary and secondary lymphedema were observed in 18 (4.2%) and 412 (95.8%) patients, respectively. The patients' mean body mass index score was 30.66 kg/m2. The data indicated that the most common cause of secondary lymphedema was breast cancer and its treatments (n = 196, 47.6%). Other causes were chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) (n = 140, 34%), lipolymphedema (n = 11, 2.7%), and other types of cancers (n = 65, 15.7%). According to the affected body regions, 416 patients had unilateral/bilateral upper and lower extremity lymphedema and 14 had head and neck lymphedema. The patients were followed with a home-based physiotherapy program (n = 353, 82.1%) or they underwent treatments through an outpatient program (n = 77, 17.9%). Conclusions: Most patients admitted to the clinic had a diagnosis of breast cancer and CVI. The severity and stages of lymphedema were variable. The data indicated that most patients were followed through a home-based physiotherapy program. These results may set a frame for understanding the treatment and care needs of patients with lymphedema.

CONTEXT: Proprioception is the basic element of the spontaneous control of movement, balance and joint stability. Therefore, it is necessary for the execution of walking and daily and sport activities. Loss of proprioception of the knee, which may cause a new injury, is important to evaluate the position sense of the joint during the rehabilitation period. However, the evaluation methods that are used are very expensive, complicated and non-portable, or the measuring method is difficult to implement. OBJECTIVE: We demonstrated the validity and reliability of knee proprioception measurements performed in the open kinetic chain position and closed kinetic chain position with a dual inclinometer. DESIGN: We assessed the validity and intra-tester reliability of a digital inclinometer for measuring the knee joint position sense in different positions. SETTING: Clinical laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: We enrolled 22 participants (age = 21.8 ± 0.95 years, height = 172 ± 9.1 cm, weight = 64.9 ± 14 kg) into the study. INTERVENTION: The same investigator used an inclinometer to take knee proprioception measurements in open and closed kinetic chain positions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The relative angular error was calculated by taking the arithmetic average of the difference between the target angle and reproduced angle and was the main outcome measure. RESULTS: We found that the dynamometer-inclinometer had a moderate ICC value (ICC = 0.594, SEM = 1.60, p = 0.005), whereas inclinometer t1 vs inclinometer t2 (ICC = 0.778, SEM = 0.62, p < 0.001) and closed kinetic chain position t1 and closed kinetic chain position t2 (ICC = 0.888, SEM = 0.63, p < 0.001) had high ICC values. CONCLUSION: Knee proprioception measurements performed with a dual inclinometer were reliable in the closed kinetic chain position in healthy, sedentary individuals and were valid and reliable in the open kinetic chain position.
