This study evaluated the effects of Quebracho tannin extract (QTE) on in vitro ruminal fermentation, chemical composition of rumen microbes, ruminal degradation and intestinal digestibility of crude protein (iCPd). Three treatments were tested, the control (basal diet without QTE), the basal diet with 15 g QTE/kg dry matter (DM) and the basal diet with 30 g QTE/kg DM. The basal diet contained (g/kg DM): 339 grass silage, 317 maize silage and 344 concentrate. In vitro gas production kinetic was determined using the Hohenheim gas test (Experiment 1). The Ankom RF technique, a batch system with automatic gas pressure recordings, was used to determine in vitro production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and ammonia-nitrogen concentration (NH3 -N), as well as nitrogen and purine bases content in liquid-associated microbes (LAM) and in a residue of undegraded feed and solid-associated microbes (Feed+SAM) (Experiment 2). Ruminal degradation and iCPd were determined using the nylon bag technique and the mobile nylon bag technique, respectively (Experiment 3). Gas production (Experiment 1), total SCFA and NH3 -N (Experiment 2) decreased with increasing QTE levels. Microbial mass and composition of LAM were not affected by QTE, but total mass of Feed+SAM linearly increased, likely due to decreased substrate degradation with increasing QTE levels. The total amount of N in microbial mass and undegraded feed after the in vitro incubation increased with increasing QTE levels, suggesting a potential greater N flow from the rumen to the duodenum. In contrast to in vivo studies with the same QTE, no effects were detected on ruminal effective degradability and iCPd, when using the nylon bag techniques. Based on the in vitro procedures, QTE increased the supply of N post-rumen; however, some evidence of a decreased fibre degradation were also observed. Therefore, the benefit of adding QTE to diets of cattle is still questionable.

An increasing human population and the growing demand for food of animal origin are leading to an intensification of sheep production and widespread overgrazing of the grassland steppe in Inner Mongolia. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of herbage allowance (HA) on OM intake (OMI) and BW gain (BWG) of grazing sheep. In July to September 2005 to 2010, a grazing experiment was conducted in the Xilin River Basin using 15-mo-old female Mongolian fat-tailed sheep (31.5 kg BW [SE 0.2]). Six HA classes were tested on 4 experimental plots per HA class that were alternately used for grazing and haymaking each year (i.e., = 2 grazed plots per HA class and year). Mean HA ranged from 15.4 (SD 4.0) to 1.5 kg (SD 0.8) herbage DM/kg BW in HA class 1 to 6, respectively. In 6 sheep per plot (4 sheep in 2009 and 2010), OMI and BWG were determined. Titanium dioxide was used to determine fecal excretion, and digestibility of ingested OM was estimated from CP concentration in feces. Fecal grab samples were collected during 5 d each in July, August, and September. The animals were weighed monthly. Daily OMI of sheep ranged between 68 and 89 g/kg BW and was not affected by HA class ( = 0.373), so that total OMI per hectare was exponentially decreased with increasing HA (root mean square error [RMSE] ≤ 0.31 g/d; ≤ 0.003 for the slope estimates). The BWG of individual sheep increased with increasing HA in 2 of the 6 yr (RMSE 18.4 g/d; ≤ 0.175 for the positive slope estimates). Nevertheless, BWG per hectare strongly decreased with increasing HA (RMSE 0.25 g/d; ≤ 0.006 for the slope estimates). These data support the common practice of farmers to manage the grassland at low HA to allow for greater animal performance per unit of land area.

Long-chain fatty acids mobilized during early lactation of dairy cows are increasingly used as energy substrate at the expense of acetate. As the synthesis of acetate in the rumen is closely linked to methane (CH4) production, we hypothesized that decreased acetate utilization would result in lower ruminal acetate levels and thus CH4 production. Twenty heifers were sampled for blood, rumen fluid and milk, and CH4 production was measured in respiration chambers in week -4, +5, +13 and +42 relative to first parturition. Based on plasma non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentration determined in week +5, animals were grouped to the ten highest (HM; NEFA > 580 µmol) and ten lowest (LM; NEFA < 580 µmol) mobilizing cows. Dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield and ruminal short-chain fatty acids did not differ between groups, but CH4/DMI was lower in HM cows in week +5. There was a negative regression between plasma NEFA and plasma acetate, between plasma NEFA and CH4/DMI and between plasma cholecystokinin and CH4/DMI in week +5. Our data show for the first time that fat mobilization of the host in early lactation is inversely related with ruminal CH4 production and that this effect is not attributed to different DMI.

To determine the effects of incremental quebracho tannin extract (QTE) infusions on rumen fermentation and yield and composition of microbial mass, a study was conducted that consisted of 1 control period (Control I) without QTE dosing; 4 periods when all animals received 1, 2, 4, or 6% QTE of the diet (DM basis); and a second control period (Control II). Each period consisted of 9 d of adaptation, 6 d of urine collection, and 1 d of rumen sampling. Three rumen-fistulated heifers (495 kg BW [SE 14]) were offered 2.6 kg/d grass hay, 2.6 kg/d concentrates, and 60 g/d mineral-vitamin premix (as fed) in 2 equal meals. Half the daily QTE dosage was intraruminally administered at every meal. Urine and rumen fluids were analyzed for purine derivatives and short-chain fatty acids, respectively. Nitrogen and purine base (PB) concentrations were determined in liquid-associated microbes in rumen fluid (LAMF), liquid-associated microbes in the solid phase (LAMS), and particle-associated microbes (PAM). Increasing QTE dosages linearly increased propionate and butyrate proportions in rumen fluid ( = 0.37, = 0.004 and = 0.51, < 0.001, respectively). Instead, proportions of acetate ( = 0.75, < 0.001), isobutyrate ( = 0.66, < 0.001), and isovalerate ( = 0.49, < 0.001) and urinary purine derivatives excretions ( = 0.66, < 0.001) linearly decreased with increasing QTE infusions. Inconsistent differences were observed for LAMF, but concentrations of PB in LAMS ( ≤ 0.018) and of N in PAM ( < 0.001) were greater at 6% QTE than at Control I, II, and 1% QTE. Hence, low to moderate QTE dosages hamper rumen fermentation and microbial biomass yields. Alongside the nutritional consequences for the host, the methodological implications of these effects should be considered in studies evaluating the targeted use of tannins in ruminant feeding.

Few data on apparent pre-caecal digestibility (APCD) of crude protein (CP) and particularly amino acids (AA) are available from studies with horses. Protein bound in cell walls (i.e. neutral detergent insoluble CP (NDICP)) is unlikely to be decomposed by digestive enzymes in the small intestine. In contrast the corresponding analytical fraction of neutral detergent soluble CP (NDSCP) (NDSCP = CP-NDICP) is likely to be available for auto-enzymatic digestion. A literature analysis on the relationship between NDICP/NDSCP and pre-caecal indigestible/digestible CP was carried out. There was a strong positive relationship between NDICP and pre-caecal indigestible CP, which suggests that NDICP can be used to estimate the part of protein that is not available for digestion in the small intestine. There was also a correlation between NDSCP and pre-caecal digestible protein. The slope of the linear regression line between NDICP and pre-caecal digestible CP was 0·9, suggesting an APCD of NDSCP of 90 %. Thus pre-caecal digestible CP may be predicted by multiplying NDSCP by 0·9. Because the literature identifies a similar AA profile in NDICP and NDSCP within a given feed the presented concept may preliminarily be transferred to AA. The proposed system can at any time be adapted to the scientific progress without altering its structure. Such adaptations would be necessary particularly when new knowledge exist on the distribution of AA onto NDICP/NDSCP, the APCD of individual AA from NDSCP, and the impact of feed processing and chewing on particle sizes and protein digestibility.

In the Inner Mongolian steppe, China, sheep generally graze during daytime and are kept in yards overnight. Hence, nutrients are not returned to the grassland, which might reduce its long-term productivity. Furthermore, the restricted grazing time may limit forage intake and thus the performance of sheep. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the impact of continuous 24-h grazing (CG) v. the common daytime grazing (DG) on herbage mass (HM), feed quality, feed organic matter intake (OMI) and live weight gain (LWG) of sheep in the Inner Mongolian steppe. Experiments were carried out from July to September, between 2005 and 2007 on two 2-ha plots per grazing treatment. Each month, the external faecal marker titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) was orally administered to six sheep per plot on 10 consecutive days. Faecal grab samples were obtained from day 6 to 10 and analysed for CP concentrations to estimate digestibility of organic matter (dOM). Faecal TiO(2) concentrations were used to determine the total faecal output and hence OMI of sheep. Concomitant to faeces collection, HM and quality, as well as LWG of the animals were measured. HM and herbage quality did not differ between treatments. However, as the season progressed, concentrations of NDF, ADF and ADL increased, whereas HM and CP concentrations declined. HM and herbage quality parameters differed between years according to the annual precipitation. dOM was similar in CG (0.577) and DG (0.572) sheep, but it decreased from July (0.583) to September (0.558) and differed between years. Accordingly, the OMI of sheep was similar for both treatments across the entire grazing season and all study years. Although mean LWG differed between months and years, it was identical in CG (101.5 g/day) and DG sheep (101.8 g/day). Additional time on pasture during night does not increase feed intake or animal performance. Positive effects of a nutrient reflux on grassland productivity and herbage quality when animals remained on the plots overnight were not found, most likely because of the fact that sheep crowded together in one corner of the plots during darkness and faecal and urinary excretions were thus not evenly distributed across the entire pasture. Considering the risk of animal theft as well as the importance of sheep manure as fuel, the common penning of sheep at night seems to be an adequate management practice for pastoralists in the Inner Mongolian steppe.

Two studies, arranged according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design, were conducted to assess effects of dietary acidification on fungal 3-phytase (PHY) efficacy in growing pigs. In Exp. 1, effects of supplementing 500 units/kg feed of PHY and 4.7 g/kg HCOOH either alone or in combination on the use of P and Zn in growing pigs fed a pelleted diet based on wheat (Triticum aestivum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), and soybean (Glycine max) meal were investigated. In Exp. 2 the same dietary treatments were fed except that PHY supplementation was increased to 1000 units/kg. In both experiments, PHY supplementation increased (P < 0.05) P digestibility and retention. A PHY × HCOOH supplementation interaction on P balance was observed (P < 0.05), indicating that the combination of the additives may increase P digestibility and retention. Effects of HCOOH and PHY on Zn use followed a similar pattern. Supplementation of 1000 units/kg of PHY further increased P and Zn retention compared to supplementation of 500 units/kg. In conclusion, the present study indicated that HCOOH supplementation to diets with microbial PHY may increase PHY efficacy.

The objective of this study was to investigate dietary selection of sheep grazing semi-arid grassland in Inner Mongolia, China, using the difference in organic matter digestibility (OMD) of herbage ingested and herbage on offer as indicator for selection. Faecal N was used as digestibility index for herbage ingested (FOMD), while OMD of herbage on offer (GOMD) was estimated from gas production obtained by the Hohenheim gas test. It was hypothesized that the difference between FOMD and GOMD is high, when grazing animals select against low quality herbage provided that herbage is abundant. In a grazing experiment, six grazing intensities (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0, 7.5 and 9.0 sheep/ha), representing light to very heavy grazing intensity for the semi-arid grassland, were compared. The amount of herbage on offer decreased with increasing grazing intensity. Independent statistical analysis of FOMD and GOMD showed that the differences between grazing intensities for both OMD determinations (FOMD: 54.0-57.3%, GOMD: 55.2-57.5%) were not significant (p > 0.05). The difference between FOMD and GOMD was not significant for grazing intensities, but varied between sampling periods from -4 to 1 percentage units. In conclusion, the lack of significance for the difference between FOMD and GOMD suggests that for the semi-arid grassland of Inner Mongolia, China, sheep did not select their feed due to a homogeneous nutritional composition of herbage on offer in 2005, regardless of grazing intensity.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of rotational and continuous grazing on herbage mass (HM), organic matter digestibility (dOM) and intake (OMI) and live weight gain (LWG) of sheep grazing on the inner Mongolian steppe, China at a stocking rate of 4.5 sheep/ha during the growing season. In the years 2005 and 2006, four 2-ha plots were used of which two were divided into four 0.5 ha paddocks each for rotational grazing, where sheep were moved each 10 days to the next paddock. The dOM was estimated from faecal crude protein concentration and OMI by oral administration of titanium dioxide. Herbage mass was similar in both grazing systems and dOM and OMI were higher (p < 0.05) at continuous grazing than at rotational grazing, but LWG did not differ probably because of extra energy expenditure for grazing and walking in a larger area. The dOM and OMI decreased (p < 0.05) with progress of the growing season and differed between years. Since precipitation during the growing season in both years was lower than the 30 years average which was probably the reason that positive effects of non-grazing periods on herbage regrowth and quality at rotational grazing could not occur, further studies are required in years with average precipitations before a final evaluation of these grazing systems can be made. Moreover, it seems necessary to quantify energy expenditure for physical activity of animals in grazing studies.

Studies on diet selection and feed intake of ruminants in extensive grazing systems often require the use of simple approaches to determine the organic matter digestibility (OMD) of the ingested feed. Therefore, we evaluated the validity of the one-factorial exponential regression established by Lukas et al. [Journal of Animal Science 83 (2005) 1332], which estimates OMD from the faecal crude protein (FCP) concentration. The equation was applied to two sets of data obtained with free grazing and pen-fed cattle, sheep and goats ingesting low and high amounts of green and dry vegetation of Sahelian pastures as well as millet leaves and cowpea hay. Data analysis showed that the livestock species did not influence the precision of estimation of OMD from FCP. For the linear regression between measured and estimated OMD (%) across n = 431 individual observations, a regression coefficient of r2 = 0.65 and a residual standard deviation (RSD) of 5.87 were obtained. The precision of estimation was influenced by the data set (p = 0.033), the type of feed (p < 0.001) and the feeding level (p = 0.009), and interactions occurred between type of feed and feeding level (p = 0.021). Adjusting the intercept and the slope of the established exponential function to the present data resulted in a compression of the curve; while r2 remained unchanged, the RSD of the regression between measured and estimated OMD was reduced, when compared with the results obtained from the equation of Lukas et al. (2005). Estimating OMD from treatment means of FCP greatly improved the correlation between measured and estimated OMD for both the established function and the newly fit equation. However, if anti-nutritional dietary factors increase the concentration of faecal nitrogen from feed or endogenous origin, the approach might considerably overestimate diet digestibility.

Development of body composition of 440 growing pigs from a three generation full-sib design to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) was determined by three different methods. Firstly, the non-invasive method deuterium dilution technique (DT), was applied to all pigs in the experiment at six weights 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 140kg. Secondly, at each weight class, eight pigs were slaughtered and their entire body chemically analysed (CA). Thirdly, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was applied on 16 live pigs at different weights. For the entire empty body (without content of the gastrointestinal tract and bladder), allometric prediction equations to predict body composition from empty body water content measured by DT were derived from chemically analysed serial slaughtered pigs. These equations showed high correlations of 0.92, 0.90 and 0.85 for the contents of body water, fat-free substance as well as protein in fat-free substance, respectively. For the soft tissue (empty body without bones and viscera), allometric prediction equation of body composition based on DT and CA showed correlations of 0.91, 0.88 and 0.82 for water content, fat-free substance, and protein content of fat free substance, respectively. Fat tissue content, fat tissue mass, and lean tissue mass measured by MRI showed allometric relationships to lipid content, lipid mass, and protein mass determined by DT with correlations of 0.98, 0.87, and 0.98, respectively. Lean (measured by MRI) and protein (determined by DT) content of soft tissue was best fitted by a linear-quadratic polynomial and resulted in a correlation of 0.86. Allometric coefficients for change of percentages of chemical components, water (b=-0.036) and protein (b=0.106) in fat-free substance of empty body during growth were similar to those in the literature indicating the consistency of accretion rates of chemical components of the fat-free substance in different studies. Means for protein- and lipid-deposition rates (determined by DT) as well as lean tissue- and fat tissue-deposition rates (measured by MRI) ranged from 95 to 154, 147 to 328, 373 to 420 and 129 to 254g in the different weight ranges. Variation between animals in protein (lean tissue) and lipid (fat tissue) deposition rate was large which can be exploited in order to identify QTL of these traits.

Young pigs (body weight 15-25 kg) were used to study the effect of graded levels of tryptophan supplementation to a diet containing 2.5 g tryptophan/kg dry matter (DM) and having a tryptophan to lysine ratio of 0.17 under restricted and unrestricted feeding conditions. Ad libitum feed intake and growth rate were 0.99 kg DM/day and 0.84 kg/day, respectively, and were not affected by supplementation of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 g tryptophan/kg diet. In restricted-fed piglets (80% of ad libitum intake) tryptophan supplementation did not improve growth rate. Therefore, greater optimum tryptophan to lysine ratios for young fast growing pigs, as concluded from results of some recently published studies in contrast to results of other studies, could not be confirmed. Possible reasons for discrepancies in published values for optimum tryptophan supply are briefly discussed. In accordance with general recommendations given in the literature, it can be concluded that a tryptophan to lysine ratio between 0.17 and 0.18 is sufficient to reach high feed intake and high growth rate in young pigs, when adequately supplied with lysine and other amino acids.

The positive relationship between fecal CP concentration and diet OM digestibility in cattle, which is based on increasing undigested microbial CP and decreasing fecal OM as OM digestibility increases, may be used as an indirect method for estimating diet OM digestibility from fecal CP concentration. Results of digestibility trials (445 individual observations) conducted at Hohenheim and Braunschweig, Germany, and at Gumpenstein, Austria, were used to study the relationship between CP concentration in feces (x, g/kg OM) and OM digestibility (y, %). The best fit was obtained with the curvilinear relationship y = ai -107.7e(-0.01515 x x), with a1 = 79.76 and a2 = 72.86 (R2 = 0.82; residual SD = 2.7; SE = 0.13), which takes into account the effects of location (i = 1 for Braunschweig and Hohenheim, and i = 2 for Gumpenstein). Dietary CP and crude fat concentration, and DMI had no effect on fecal CP content, whereas crude fiber content, proportion of concentrate in the diet, and forage type significantly affected CP concentration in feces; however, the magnitude of these effects was less than 2 percentage units, and the direction of the effect of proportion of concentrate in the diet was not uniform. The curvilinear relationship between fecal CP concentration (observed range, 100 to 300 g/kg of OM) and diet OM digestibility (observed range = 57 to 80%) may be used to estimate diet OM digestibility, particularly for field trials, as it requires no feed samples and does not physically restrict the animal.

Energy requirements for ingestion and standing were determined in open-circuit respiration chambers with four ruminally cannulated German Red Pied steers weighing 617 +/- 53 kg of BW (mean +/- SD). The requirement for standing over lying was derived by regressing heat production on time spent standing within 2-h periods when no feed was offered to avoid any interference with eating activity, and amounted to 14 kJ/(d x kg of BW). The energy requirement for ingestion was determined by calculating the difference between heat production during a 2-h period without feed and during a consecutive 2-h period in which straw of different particle sizes, fresh and conserved grass, or rolled barley were offered for ad libitum intake. Before measurements, the rumens of the steers were emptied, washed, and filled with a buffer solution to avoid heat production by metabolism of absorbed nutrients from the feed ingested during the experimental periods. The mean value for all feeds tested was 20 J/(min of ingestion x kg BW). Relating heat production to the amount of DM or fiber ingested did not decrease variation among feeds. This confirms the observations of earlier studies, that energy requirement for ingestion is mainly determined by time spent eating. Results of additional measurements, in which the same amounts of the respective feeds ingested in preceding periods were put into the emptied rumens via the cannulas, showed that the presence of the feed in the rumen did not increase heat production, indicating that the increment of heat production during eating is mainly caused by ingesting and chewing the feed. Further measurements in the same animals with an ingesta-filled rumen showed that ingestion of straw led to an increase in heat production per minute of chewing similar to those with emptied rumens, which confirms the validity of the experimental procedure using ruminally emptied animals to determine the energy requirement for ingestion.

A trial was conducted to investigate energy and nutrient digestibility of cassava leaf meal (CLM), casein (CAS), fish meal (FM), full-fat soya bean (FFSB) and extracted soya bean meal (SBM). The basal diet containing cassava root meal (CRM) and FFSB meal and the other five dietary treatments were evaluated with 12 crossbred castrated male pigs in a metabolism study covering three successive experimental periods between 40 and 60 kg body weight (BW). Total tract digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and gross energy (GE) of diets, generally increased significantly (p < 0.05) from CLM diet to FFSB and FM diets and finally to CAS and SBM diets, corresponding to a decrease in fibre content in the diets. Except for CAS diets, the pattern of acid detergent fibre (ADF) digestibility followed a similar trend. Significantly higher ADF digestibility was recorded for soya bean diets while ADF digestibility value obtained for CLM diet was significantly lower. The digestible energy values obtained for CAS, FM, FFSB, SBM and CLM were 22.2, 16.3, 17.5, 17.0 and 8.0 MJ/kg DM, respectively. Corresponding metabolizable energy values were 22.1, 15.6, 17.1, 16.3 and 7.6 MJ/kg DM, respectively,

In vitro gas production was measured to investigate associative effects of untreated and chemically treated rice straw (RS) and of RS and grass hay or mulberry leaves (ML). The RS was treated with NaOH, urea, or (NH4)HCO3. Cumulative gas production was recorded at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, and 96 h of incubation, and the Gompertz function was used to describe the kinetics of gas production. Treatment with NaOH, urea, and NH4HCO3 increased (P < 0.05) gas production at 48 h by 55, 52, and 37% and the maximum rate of gas production of RS from 0.64 to 1.51, 1.27, and 1.13 mL/h, respectively. The inclusion of treated straws, hay, and ML in a mixture with RS at increasing proportions (25, 50, 75, 100%) elevated cumulative gas production and its rate. Maximum gas production was not different between the RS and its mixtures with the treated straws, but inclusion of hay into RS or NH4HCO3-treated RS increased the maximum gas production. Associative effects were defined as the difference between the observed gas production for the mixtures and the sum of the individual component feeds. The NaOH-treated RS, included at higher proportions, had positive associative effects at all times of incubation < 96 h; effects were negative or absent at 96 h. No effects were observed with mixtures of RS with urea-treated RS. The NH4HCO3-treated RS mixture tended to have negative associative effects at all three levels. Positive associative effects (P < 0.05) were observed for both RS and NH4HCO3-treated RS at almost all inclusion levels of hay or ML after 12 to 96 h of incubation. The response was more pronounced with ML than with hay. Associative effects generally declined with duration of incubation. We conclude that positive associative effects on in vitro gas production occurred more consistently when RS was incubated in mixtures with hay or ML than when incubated in mixtures with chemically treated RS.

This study tested the hypothesis that the effect of lysine intake, if first-limiting, on protein retention in growing pigs is completely independent of the effects of energy intake, differences in the protein retention capacity among genotypes and gender, and body weight. Protein retention, using the nitrogen balance technique, was measured in 12 castrated male German Landrace and Pietrain pigs at 44 and 77 kg of BW and at two energy intake levels (1.1 and 1.3 MJ ME/kg BW.75). All animals received a constant amount of a basal diet that provided a protein intake of 220 g/d and a total lysine intake of 13 g/d. Appropriate amounts of cornstarch were offered additionally to reach the intended energy intake levels. The results show that neither energy intake nor breed had any effect on the level of protein retention, whereas, at 77 kg BW, protein retention was significantly lower than at 44 kg (117.8 and 123.5 g/d, respectively), which can be attributed to the higher requirement for maintenance. The results of this experiment and the linearity of the relationship between protein retention and lysine intake as shown by several authors simplify both the prediction of protein retention from lysine intake and the calculation of the lysine requirement for a particular protein retention. However, to ensure accuracy of these predictions, it is essential to know when ratios of lysine to other amino acids and to energy and capacity for protein retention in the animal become first-limiting.

In order to study the main effects of particle size three ruminally fistulated cows were fed a hay rich in fibre in long (28.7 mm), chopped (9.2 mm) and ground (2.9 mm) form in a 3 x 3 Latin square design. In another three factorial experiment with 8 wethers (4 animals were ruminally fistulated) the main effects and interactions of the above mentioned hay particle size at two concentrate levels (10.4 to 13.3 and 29.5 to 40.1% in the ration) and at two feeding levels (restricted and ad libitum) were investigated. There was no effect of chopped hay (9.2 mm) on chewing activity, whereas ground hay (2.9 mm) reduced rumination time (52% in sheep and 36% in dairy cows) and chewing expense (time/unit of DM or NDF intake). These effects were more pronounced at high concentrate intake. Sheep increased feed intake more through reduction of rumination expense than through the extension of rumination time. pH-value, concentration of bicarbonate and C2:C3-ratio indicate favourable fermentation conditions in long (28.7 mm) and chopped hay (9.2 mm), whereas a negative influence of ground hay (2.9 mm) or ruminal fermentation could be observed.

We determined the energy requirement for the activity associated with eating in an experiment with four adult Hinterwälder steers weighing 640+/-25 kg BW (mean+/-SD), using indirect calorimetry in respiration chambers. Heat production was measured during 3 h with and 3 h without ad libitum access to wheat straw, and the energy cost of eating was calculated as the difference, which was on average 27+/-13 J/(min x kg BW) (mean+/-SD). Straw intake, the time spent for eating, and the number of jaw movements were recorded. Values for the energy cost of eating reported in the literature are similar to those in this study, and values for ruminating amount to approximately 27% of those for eating. The energy cost of eating (literature values) varies greatly between feeds and feed treatments, when related to the amount of feed ingested, but it was relatively constant when related to time spent eating and was similar for cattle, sheep, and horses, when related to BW or metabolic BW (35 J/[min x kg BW] or 124 J/ [min x kg BW.75]). Calculations indicated that in high-quality roughage 10% of the ME and in untreated straw approximately 30% of the ME provided by the feed are used for eating and ruminating. This might be the main reason for the lower efficiency of ME utilization in roughages. The energy requirement for eating and ruminating should therefore be considered as a distinct proportion of the total ME requirement.
