The results presented in the paper are related to the prediction of the effective fracture toughness of particulate composites (KICeff). KICeff was determined using a probabilistic model supported by a cumulative probability function qualitatively following the Weibull distribution. Using this approach, it was possible to model two-phase composites with an arbitrarily defined volume fraction of each phase. The predicted value of the effective fracture toughness of the composite was determined based on the mechanical parameter of the reinforcement (fracture toughness), matrix (fracture toughness, Young's modulus, yield stress), and composite (Young's modulus, yield stress). The proposed method was validated: the determined fracture toughness of the selected composites was in accordance with the experimental data (the authors' tests and literature data). In addition, the obtained results were compared with data captured by means of the rule of mixtures (ROM). It was found that the prediction of KICeff using the ROM was subject to a significant error. Moreover, a study of the effect of averaging the elastic-plastic parameters of the composite, on KICeff, was performed. The results showed that if the yield stress of the composite increased, a decrease in its fracture toughness was noticed, which is in line with the literature reports. Furthermore, it was noted that an increase in the Young's modulus of the composite affected KICeff in the same way as a change in its yield stress.

The structure of energy rotor components includes different structural materials in the sections, which are subjected to varying levels of thermal loading. The first component section has to include a precipitation-hardened nickel-based alloy, while the second one may be manufactured from other materials. Due to the installation cost, the use of expensive nickel-based materials is not recommended for applications in sections with a lower degree of thermal loading. Therefore, this aspect is still actually from an engineering point of view and is discussed in the paper by means of manufacturing and experimental approaches. The paper follows the welding problems related to a hybrid joint made of superalloy (Alloy 59) and hard rusting steel (S355J2W+N steel). The problem is solved using the MIG process at various parameters. With respect to the joint quality, microstructural features and mechanical parameters of the examined zone are presented. In the case of microstructure analysis, the dendritic and cellular natures of austenite were dominant elements of the joint. Mechanical tests have expressed a 50% reduction in elongation of the steel and alloy steel weld and lowering mechanical parameters. Mechanical parameters of the joint were on the level of their values observed for the steel, while the hardening coefficient followed the hardening curve of the alloy. Decohesion of the steel and mixed weld has reflected the constant proportion of values of axial and shear stress components up to the total separation. It is noted the tensile curves of the alloy and alloy steel joint follow a very similar shape, reporting the same response on the monotonic tension. The materials can be analysed by applying constitutive equations at very similar values of their coefficients. The obtained results enabled elaborating and examining the MIG welding process for thick-walled structures (not smaller than 8 mm) in detail giving all parameters required for technology. Finally, the technology for producing a hybrid joint using difficult-to-weld materials with different physical and mechanical properties, such as nickel alloys and low-alloy steels, is proposed. Results have shown it possible to develop a technology for producing of hybrid joints (supper alloy + hard rusting steel) with assumed physical and mechanical properties for rotors applied in the power boiler. This solution was proposed instead of previously used elements of rotors from expensive materials. It was assumed that the newly proposed and utilised method of welding will allow for obtaining good properties in terms of energy devices.

The article presents a numerical-experimental approach to the weldability and mechanical resistance of the joint of Alloy 59 (2.4605, nickel-chromium-molybdenum) and S355J2W (1.8965) structural steel manufactured by the MIG process with the use of micro-jet cooling. This research was considered because the standard MIG process does not guarantee the procurement of a mixed hard-rusting structural steel superalloy weld of a repeatable and acceptable quality. Welds made through the classic MIG process express cracks that result from their unfavorable metallographic microstructure, while the joint supported by micro-jet cooling does not reflect any cracks and has a high strength with good flexibility. This was achieved by the application of helium for cooling. The joining technology was also considered in the numerical stage, represented by calculations in situ. For this purpose, the fundamental solution method (FSM) for the simulation of heat transfer during the process of welding with micro-jet cooling was implemented according to the initial boundary value problem (IBVP). The problem was solved employing the method of combining the finite difference method, Picard iterations, approximation by the radial basis function, and the fundamental solution method so as to solve the IVBP. The proposed method was validated by the data and results obtained during in situ experiments. The numerical approach enabled us to obtain variations in the temperature distribution values in HAZ with its different dimensional variants, ranging between 600 °C and 1400 °C.

The demand for high-strength steel welds, as observed in civil and transport engineering, is related to a mass reduction in vehicles. Container-type trucks are examples of this kind of transport means because their boxes are able to be produced using Hardox grade steels. Therefore, this study reflects on the properties of welds in the MAG welding of Hardox 450, obtained through an innovative micro-jet cooling process with helium. This joining technology aims to reduce the formation of defects and to obtain a joint with very good assumed mechanical properties. Structural components of grade steel require welds with acceptable mechanical parameters with respect to operational loading conditions. That is, this study focuses on selecting welding parameters for the Hardox 450 steel and determining the weld quality with respect to microstructural observations and mechanical tests, such as the Charpy, tensile and fatigue tests. Weld fracturing under increasing monotonic force was examined and was strongly related to both stress components, i.e., axial and shear. The joint response under fatigue was expressed through differences in the fracture zones, i.e., at a stress value lower than the proportional limit, and weld degradation occurred in the shear and axial stress components. The data indicate that the hourglass specimen, with the weld in the centre zone of the measurement section, can be directly used to determine a weld response under cyclic loading. The impact test results showed attractive behaviour in the tested joint, as represented by 47 J at -20 °C. The recommended MAG welding parameters for Hardox 450 steel are low-oxygen when using an Ar + 18% CO2 shielding mixture. The collected results can be directly used as a guide to weld thin-walled structures (6 mm) made of Hardox grade steel, while the data from mechanical tests can support the modelling, designing and manufacturing of components made from this kind of steel grade.

Impact resistance is one of the most critical features of composite structures, and therefore, its examination for a new material has a fundamental importance. This paper is devoted to the characterization of the fully recyclable thermoplastic ELIUM acrylic resin reinforced by glass fabric woven, which belongs to a new category of materials requiring advanced testing before their application in responsible elements of engineering structures. Its high strength, low weight as well as low production cost give excellent opportunities for its wide application in the automotive industry as a replacement of the thermoset-based laminates. The study presents an experimental work concerning the effect of damage due to low and high cyclic fatigue aging of two groups of specimens, first with the woven fabric orientations of [0°/90°]4 and secondly with [45°/45°]4, on the low impact velocity properties. The impact resistance was measured in terms of load peak, absorbed energy, penetration threshold and damage analysis. The low velocity impact results indicate that the uniaxial cyclic loading (fatigue aging) of the material leads to the reduction of impact resistance, especially at the high impact energy levels. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan observations reveal that the damage area grows with the increase of both strain amplitude and impact energy.

The paper is focused on testing the weld of the S960MC steel produced at the micro-jet cooling under static and fatigue loading at critical parameters. This kind of material was in the form of a sheet with a thickness equal to 2 mm. The joint was obtained using three different types of welding wires: EDFK 1000, Union NiMoCr and Union X96 at the same parameters of the process. The joints were examined using non-destructive and destructive tests. The results from non-destructive experiments enable us to assess the quality of the welds directly before the joining process. In contrast, the destructive one allows following welds behavior under different loading conditions with their critical parameters. The bending experiments confirmed the good plastic properties of the weld, expressed by no cracks in the region tested in many variants of the joint manufactured. The results from static tests indicated a significant reduction of mechanical parameters of the weld in comparison to the base metal, expressed by 50% differences. Fatigue data have enabled us to follow the welding behavior at the increasing amplitude of axial stress up to fracture at constant amplitude value covering the following values of stress 650 MPa-100 MPa. Variations of total energy are presented at different values of several cycles up to fracture. Fracture regions are collected for analysis of the joint region features under cyclic loading. They have indicated differences in weld cracking depended on the stress level. Finally, the Wöhler S-N curve of the weld was determined, indicating the value of the fatigue limit of the weld tested, i.e., 100 MPa. The weld at the Union NiMoCr welding wire was indicated as the joint having the highest resistance on static and fatigue loadings.

Modern means of transport will play a significant role in the smart city. In the automotive industry, high-strength steels such as Docol are employed more often. This kind of material is relatively not very well weldable. The main reason is related to the Heat Affect Zone, the region in which cracks occur. Another disadvantage is connected with differences in values of ultimate strength of parent and weld material. The differences can be diminished using the correct welding process, which employs nickel and molybdenum electrode wires at much lower sulfur content. The weld metal deposit contains mainly martensite and bainite with coarse ferrite, while the parent material contains mainly martensite and rather fine ferrite. New technology, micro-jet cooling after the joining process enables to obtain the microstructure of weld metal deposit at acceptable parameters. Welding with micro-jet cooling could be treated as a very promising welding Docol steels process with high industrial application. Results of non-destructive inspections on macro samples corresponded with further destructive test results (tensile strength, hardness, fatigue, metallographic structure analyses). This article aims to verify fatigue behavior of Docol 1200 M steel after welding supported by the cooling using the micro-jet technique. For the first time, micro-jet cooling was used to weld this kind of steel to check the mechanical properties of the joint, especially to determine the fatigue limit. This study is formulated as follows: investigating fatigue resistance of the Docol 1200 M weld manufactured at the cooling process with micro-jets. The joints were produced in the MAG (Metal Active Gas) technology modified by micro-jet cooling. The results collected in the fatigue test were processed in the form of the Wöhler's S-N diagram following the fatigue limit of the weld examined. All data have indicated the possibility of obtaining a new method of welded joints with high fatigue limit minimum of 480 MPa. It could be important to achieve a tensile strength of 700 MPa while maintaining the best relative elongation at the level of the base material.

This paper focuses on the mechanical properties analysis of the high strength S700MC steel applied in welding joints. The research comprised mechanical tests for checking what the changes of tensile characteristics, mechanical parameters, resistance to impact, and fracture toughness look like in selected regions of the welding joint. Stress-strain curves have shown significant differences in the tensile characteristic shape and the values of Young's modulus, yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and ductility due to the welding process applied. In the case of Charpy tests, the courses of the accumulated energy, force, deflection, and project velocity are presented, indicating the maximum value of absorbed energy, the same level of force during the first contact of the projectile with the specimens, and the significant variation of the velocity for the impact energy ranging from 50 J up to 300 J. On the basis of the fracture toughness tests, the distributions of the CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement) values are presented for the parent material, HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) and weld. Moreover, the characteristic features of the fatigue pre-crack, transient and crack propagation zones are identified and discussed.
