A colloidal silicate granulated nickel-aluminum-zirconium (CSG-NAZ) was prepared, and the chromium(VI) (Cr(VI)) ions recovery capacity was evaluated using a sodium sulfate solution in a column experiment. The amount adsorbed and breakthrough time were enhanced by decreasing the flow rate (flow rate is in the order of 3.0 > 2.0 > 0.5 mL). The breakthrough curves and model parameters were estimated using the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models. The obtained data confirmed to fit both the Yoon-Nelson model (0.858-0.906) and the Thomas model (0.813-0.906). Additionally, Cr(VI) ions that adsorbed onto CSG-NAZ could be desorbed using a sodium sulfate solution in a column experiment. The total recovery percentage of Cr(VI) ions was 80.9% after six repetitions of adsorption/desorption. Finally, the obtained results revealed that CSG-NAZ was a candidate adsorbent for the recovery of Cr(VI) ions owing to its applicability toward a continuous system.

In this study, waste biomass adsorbents produced from mangosteen shells (MGS) were prepared (denoted as MGS500 and MGS1000). The physical and chemical characteristics, such as scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis, specific surface area, pore volumes, surface functional groups, and point of zero charge of the prepared MGS samples were determined, and the adsorption capacity of cadmium ions from aqueous media was assessed. The effects of pH, adsorption time, temperature, and coexistence on adsorption were carefully assessed using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer under several experimental conditions. The adsorption capacity decreased in the order, MGS < MGS500 < MGS1000. The optimal pH for cadmium ion removal was 5.0. The amount of cadmium ions adsorbed gradually increased with time, and adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 24 h after adsorption. Additionally, the amount of adsorbed cadmium ions increased with increasing adsorption temperature. To elucidate the adsorption mechanism in detail, the elemental distribution and X-ray photoelectron spectra of the prepared adsorbents were analyzed. Finally, desorption solutions such as HNO3, H2O, and NaOH were used to desorb the absorbed cadmium ions from MGS1000. Under our experimental conditions, the desorption percentage of cadmium ions was approximately 98.8% using HNO3. In conclusion, MGS1000 exhibited a good adsorption capacity of 12.0 mg/g for adsorbing cadmium ions from aqueous media and desorption capacity with HNO3 at 1000 mmol/L.

In this study, we evaluate the desorption or recovery capacity of chromium(VI) ions using desorption solutions containing sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or sodium sulfate (Na2SO4). A complex hydroxide of nickel-aluminum-zirconium (NAZ) was prepared as the adsorbent for the removal of chromium(VI) ions. The results from repeated adsorption/desorption experiments on chromium(VI) ions using NAZ complex hydroxide were evaluated. The desorption percentage of chromium(VI) ions increased with the increase in the concentration of NaOH or Na2SO4 in the desorption solution. The determined optimal concentration of NaOH or Na2SO4 in the desorption solution was 10 mmol/L under the used experimental conditions. After three adsorption-desorption cycles, the recovery percentages of chromium(VI) ions using NaOH and Na2SO4 were 60% (total amounts adsorbed and desorbed were 102 and 61 mg/g, respectively) and 75% (total amounts adsorbed and desorbed were 96 and 72 mg/g, respectively), respectively. Additionally, we confirmed the existence of chromium on the surface of the NAZ complex hydroxide. After three adsorption/desorption cycles, the crystal structure of the NAZ complex hydroxide was maintained. These results indicated the potential of the NAZ complex hydroxide using a desorption solution containing NaOH or Na2SO4 for the recovery of chromium(VI) ions.

Coal fly ash (FA) was treated by hydrothermal activation with sodium hydroxide solution at different concentrations to optimize the conversion method. Zeolite of the sodium type is prepared from coal FA by 1, 1.5, and 3 mol/L sodium hydroxide solutions (ZE1, ZE1.5, and ZE3). These adsorbents' morphology, crystal structure, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform (FT)-IR spectra, cation exchange capacity (CEC), specific surface area and pore volumes, and pHpzc were determined. An adsorption experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of contact time, pH, temperature, and coexistence. From the results, the values of CEC and specific surface area of prepared samples was in the order ZE3 < ZE1.5 < ZE1. The similar trends were observed in lead ions adsorption. In addition, our obtained data elucidate that the ion exchange with sodium ions in the interlayer ZE1 is one of the adsorption mechanisms of Pb2+ from water layer. Finally, lead ions adsorbed on ZE1 could be desorbed using a hydrochloric acid solution, showing that ZE1 could be reused as a water purification agent.

To increase the adsorption capability of Hg2+ from aqueous media, we prepared sodium-type fine zeolite grains with various particle sizes (denoted as ZE1, ZE2 and ZE3). The particle sizes of ZE1, ZE2 and ZE3 were 16.363 ± 0.365, 1.454 ± 0.357 and 0.607 ± 0.377 µm, respectively. Moreover, the CEC, specific surface area and pore volume were in the order ZE1 (42 mmol/g and 23.5 m2/g) < ZE2 (72 mmol/g and 67.1 m2/g) < ZE3 (135 mmol/g and 176.6 m2/g). Subsequently, the Hg2+ adsorption capability was investigated. The performance of tested agents on Hg2+ adsorbed was in the order ZE1 (5.0 mg/g) < ZE2 (9.4 mg/g) < ZE3 (20.2 mg/g). It was concluded that fine crystalline zeolite was important in enhancing the adsorption capability of Hg2+. In addition, the mechanism of adsorption of Hg2+ on the ZE samples was evaluated. Our results suggested that Hg2+ was exchanged with sodium ions in the interlayers of ZE samples with correlation coefficients of 0.966-0.979. Our findings revealed that these ZE samples constitute potential agents for the adsorption of Hg2+ from aqueous media.

We combined a nickel-aluminum-zirconium complex hydroxide (NAZ) with colloidal silica as a binder to prepare a granulated agent for adsorbing heavy metals from aqueous media. Three samples with different particle diameters were prepared to evaluate the effects on the properties: small (NAZ-S), medium (NAZ-M), and large (NAZ-L). We confirmed the granulation of the prepared samples at a binder content of 25%. NAZ-S had the largest specific surface area and number of hydroxyl groups, followed by NAZ-M and then NAZ-L. Regarding the adsorption capacity, NAZ-S adsorbed the most chromium(VI) ions followed by NAZ-M and then NAZ-L. The binding energy of Cr(2p) at 575-577 eV was detected after adsorption, and the effects of the temperature, contact time, and pH on the adsorption of chromium(VI) ions were evaluated. We identified the following adsorption mechanism: ion exchange with sulfate ions in the interlayer region of the NAZ samples. Finally, the chromium(VI) ions adsorbed by the NAZ samples were easily desorbed using a desorption solution. The results showed that NAZ offers great potential for the removal of chromium(VI) ions from aqueous solutions.

The 2014/15 influenza season started earlier than usual, and intense activity was reflection of circulation of antigenically-drifted and vaccine-mismatched dominant A(H3N2) viruses. Although inpatients and health-care workers (HCWs) had a high influenza vaccination coverage rate well prior to the beginning of influenza season, numerous outbreaks of influenza A(H3N2) infection with fatal cases were reported in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Japan during 2014/15 influenza season. In January 2015, we were given opportunity to conduct outbreak investigation of influenza A at facility A (LTCF attached with hospital) in Western part of Japan. We evaluated overall and occupation-stratified influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) among HCWs at facility A using a retrospective cohort design. Overall VE, occupation-stratified VE and adjusted VE (AVE) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using the following formula: (1-relative risks (RR) or 1-adjusted RR) × 100%. Overall vaccine coverage rate among HCWs was 85%. Overall VE for HCWs was 28% (95% CI: -70 to 67) and overall AVE was 3% (95% CI: -34 to 30). Although there was no severe cases, our results indicated that even with high vaccination coverage rate with appropriate vaccination timing, the VE was low for HCWs, which echoes with previously reported VE from other northern hemisphere countries. However, rehabilitation group who had high awareness against influenza as a group and carried out intensive precautions from early influenza season had no cases. We conclude that multiple preventive measures in addition to high vaccination rate is necessary for preventing influenza of HCWs working at LCTFs.

OBJECTIVE: In August 2012, an outbreak of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157 infection was investigated by the City of Sapporo and Hokkaido Prefectural Government. The initial notification reported an illness affecting 94 residents of 10 private nursing homes distributed across multiple areas of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan; at this time three cases were confirmed as EHEC O157 infection. The objectives of the investigation were to identify the source of infection and recommend control measures to prevent further illness. METHODS: A suspected case was defined as a resident of one of the private nursing homes in Hokkaido who had at least one of the following gastrointestinal symptoms: diarrhoea, bloody stool, abdominal pain or vomiting between 10 July and 10 September 2012. Cases were confirmed by the presence of Shiga toxin 1- and 2-producing EHEC O157 in stool samples of suspected cases. We conducted an epidemiological analysis and an environmental investigation. RESULTS: We identified 54 confirmed and 53 suspected cases in 12 private nursing homes including five fatalities. Of the 107 cases, 102 (95%) had consumed pickles, all of which had been manufactured at the same facility. EHEC O157 isolates from two pickle samples, 11 cases and two staff members of the processing company were indistinguishable. The company that produced the pickles used inadequate techniques to wash and sanitize the vegetables. DISCUSSION: Contaminated pickles were the likely source of this outbreak. We recommended that the processing company improve their methods of washing and sanitizing raw vegetables. As a result of this outbreak, the sanitation requirements for processing pickles were revised.

AIM: A survey of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in hemodialysis (HD) patients was conducted to determine the burden and risk of infection and to suggest preventive measures against HBV infection among HD patients at nine hospitals in Hiroshima, Japan, from 1999 to 2003. METHODS: HBV markers were investigated for 1860 HD patients. The prevalence, incidence of HBV and prevalence of occult HBV were calculated. RESULTS: The prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was 2.6%, the positive rate of anti-hepatitis B core (HBc) was 20.6% and that of anti-hepatitis B surface (HBs) was 11.7%. Among 1372 patients who started HD after the approval of erythropoietin in Japan in 1991, the prevalence of HBsAg was 2.1%. The incidence rate of HBsAg positivity was 0/1000 person-years and the incidence of anti-HBc was 0.3/1000 person-years. Among 1812 HBsAg negative patients HBV DNA was detected in two: one case was negative for anti-HBc and anti-HBs, and the other was only positive for anti-HBc. Prevalence of occult HBV was 0.11%. CONCLUSION: The incidence rate of HBV was much lower than that of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the same cohort. We supposed that the discrepancy between incidence rate of HBV and that of HCV was caused by the difference of their carrier rates and of their characteristics for persistent infection. So, we concluded that it is prerequisite to grasp the burden of HBV carriers in the group to prevent new HBV infections in HD patients.

Studies of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in non-human primates such as chimpanzees are no longer possible due to ethical considerations and the endangered status of chimpanzees since April 2007 in Japan. A human hepatocyte transplanted chimeric mouse was used to characterize HBV infectivity in serial stages of acute infection. Chimeric mice were inoculated intravenously with serum samples obtained from an experimentally infected chimpanzee with HBV. Sera from the pre-acute phases (i.e., rump-up viremia prior to anti-HBc) and late acute phases (i.e., declining phase of HBsAg and anti-HBcAb positive) were collected from the chimpanzees 57 and 244 days after inoculation. These sera contained 2.6 x 10(6) and 2.8 x 10(6) copies/ml of HBV DNA, respectively. Three chimeric mice inoculated intravenously with 100 microl of pre-acute serum (equivalent to 10(0) copy of HBV DNA) developed an HBV infection. The three chimeric mice that received 100 microl of pre-acute serum (equivalent to 10(1) copies of HBV DNA), developed high levels of serum HBV DNA. None of the three chimeric mice inoculated with 100 microl of 1:10(4) dilution (equivalent to 10(1) copies of HBV DNA) of late-acute serum was infected, while only one of three chimeric mice inoculated with 100 microl of 1:10(3) dilution (equivalent to 10(2) copies of HBV DNA) of late-acute serum developed an HBV infection. Based on these results, chimeric mice can be used as animal models for the study of HBV infectivity, pathogenesis and control. The results show that pre-acute phase HBV serum is about 100-times more infectious than late acute phase serum.

OBJECTIVE: Although prevalence rates of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections have kept decreasing in blood donors, there is little information on incidence rates of these hepatitis viruses in Japan. METHODS: During 10 years from June 1994 through April 2004, 418,269 inhabitants of Hiroshima, Japan, donated blood (1,409,465 units in total). They were screened for serum markers of HBV and HCV infections, and individuals who developed de novo infections were identified. RESULTS: Infection with HBV occurred at a rate of 2.78 per 100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval: 1.78-4.14/100,000 person-years) and that with HCV at a rate of 1.86 per 100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval: 1.06-3.01/100,000 person-years). Residual risks of transmission by transfusions, based on the relationship risk [window period (estimated at 0.15 and 0.03 years in chimpanzees inoculated with minimum infectious doses for HBV and HCV, respectively) x incidence], were 1/243,000 for HBV and 1/1,960,000 for HCV infections. CONCLUSION: At present, incidence rates of HBV and HCV infections are extremely low in Japan.

BACKGROUND: In planning optimal hepatitis B virus (HBV) blood screening strategies, the minimum infectious dose and early dynamics of HBV need to be determined for defining the window period for HBV DNA as well as for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Pairs of chimpanzees were inoculated with preacute-phase inocula containing HBV of genotype A or genotype C to determine the minimum infectious dose, and two pairs of chimps infected with the lowest infectious dose of genotypes A and C were followed for HBV markers. RESULTS: The minimum 50 percent chimpanzee infectious dose (CID50) was estimated to be approximately 10 copies for genotype A and for genotype C. In the two chimps inoculated with the lowest infectious dose, the HBV DNA window was 55 to 76 days for genotype A and 35 to 50 days for genotype C, respectively. The HBsAg window was 69 to 97 days for genotype A and 50 to 64 days for genotype C, respectively. The doubling times of HBV DNA were 3.4 days (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.6-4.9 days) for genotype A and 1.9 days (95% CI, 1.6-2.3 days) for genotype C. When comparing the replication velocity of HBV DNA between the two genotypes, the doubling time of genotype C was significantly shorter than that of HBV genotype A (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Although the CID50 of approximately 10 copies was similar for the two HBV genotypes, the doubling time and pre-HBV nucleic acid amplification technology (<100 copies/mL) window period in chimps infected with the lowest infectious dose seemed to be shorter for genotype C than for genotype A.
