RESUMO

A wastewater treatment plant with a large inflow of phosphorus (P) is a potential P source that can act as an alternative to phosphate rocks and a renewable source of P. During electrolysis with inert electrodes, hydroxide ions generated from the cathode cause calcium phosphate (CaP) precipitation, and oxygen and hydrogen generated from the electrodes cause thickening of the sludge by electroflotation in sludge treatment streams. However, these two effects have not been achieved simultaneously because the precipitation of CaP requires much more time than that required for thickening by electroflotation. In this study, an electrolysis system that used an anode covered with bivalve shells was used. Batch experiments were conducted and the results demonstrated that covering the anode with shells resulted in their dissolution and that the calcium ions provided by this process considerably enhanced P removal in the form of CaP, thereby shortening the time required for CaP precipitation. In continuous experiments with excess sludge, electrolysis with shells accomplished sludge thickening by electroflotation (the thickened sludge had 5.5 times the total solids in the original excess sludge) and low relative phosphate-P concentrations (0.0545-0.0812) in the effluent compared to the influent. This effect is attributed to CaP precipitation. Additional mixing of the CaP precipitates in the effluent enhanced their settleability. The results demonstrate that electrolysis using an anode covered with bivalve shells simultaneously achieved CaP precipitation and sludge thickening.

Fluidised-bed systems are a promising approach to microalgal cultivation, but few studies have considered their application to indigenous microalgal consortia (IMCs), which have high adaptability to wastewater. In this study, IMCs were cultivated in treated wastewater with and without fluidised carriers, and the effects of operating parameters were considered. Microalgae in the culture were confirmed to originate from the carriers, and the IMC presence on the carriers was promoted by decreasing the carrier replacement number and increasing the culture replacement volume. The presence of carriers enabled greater nutrient removal from the treated wastewater by the cultivated IMCs. Without carriers, IMCs in the culture were scattered and showed poor settleability. With carriers, IMCs in the culture exhibited good settleability owing to floc formation. The improved settleability with carriers also increased the energy production from sedimented IMCs.

Climatic changes due to emission of greenhouse gases are a global concern. These emissions occur by combustion of fossil fuels whose drought is near in which case renewable energy is the only alternative. Microalgae are promising sources of sustainable bioenergy production, and utilisation of wastewater as cultures is recommended for economical production cost. In this study, indigenous microalgae, which had adaptability for wastewater samples, were cultivated with a municipal secondary effluent, and influences of changes in inorganic nitrogen (IN) concentration, specifically IN increase, on temporal accumulation and degradation of organic components in indigenous microalgae were investigated. Indigenous microalgae accumulated total lipids and carbohydrates against reduced IN, and increase in superoxide dismutase suggested that the accumulation was possibly induced by generating reactive oxygen species. Continued cultivation of indigenous microalgae under the IN exhausted condition should be avoided because of the resulting total carbohydrate degradation. IN replenishment when IN was decreased but still existed in the culture and that when IN was exhausted in the culture triggered sharp degradation of the total carbohydrate, which possibly utilised to accumulate crude protein and/or chlorophyll a for continuous growth or regrowth. The total carbohydrate was accumulated and recovered after the degradation; meanwhile, two or three days were required for the recovery of the total carbohydrate. In addition, the IN replenishment also resulted in total lipid degradation. Therefore, to produce indigenous microalgae with high and stable total carbohydrate and lipid content, it was critical to prevent IN increase in the culture.

Phosphorus (P) is a finite and essential resource, and its linear movement from mines to waste streams may result in shortages. This has encouraged efforts to recover P from sewage systems for reuse. This study developed a new electrochemical P precipitation system for the subnatant of the sludge flotation thickening process, in which drifting Corbicula shells are added to provide a supply of calcium ions (Ca2+) to promote P precipitation. However, adding Corbicula shells to coexisting suspended solids (SS) and coagulant resulted in adsorption of the shells in the neutralized and hydrophobized floc clusters, which limited their electrochemical dissolution. Adding Corbicula shells after SS removal by flotation with electrochemically generated gases resulted in their successful electrochemical dissolution, which enhanced phosphate-P removal. Increasing the amount of Corbicula shells enhanced the phosphate-P removal to a point, after which further addition simply increased Ca2+. The consumption of H+ generated near the anode for the dissolution of Corbicula shells increased the pH of the bulk solution, which enabled P precipitation not only onto the cathode but also in the bulk solution. Analysis of chemical composition in the generated particles suggests that they can be used as a slow P-release fertilizer and soil conditioner.

Global demand for phosphorus (P) is increasing, which has led to concerns over future drought and has driven efforts to recover P from wastewater streams for reuse. In this study, platinum-coated titanium electrodes were applied to the electrochemical precipitation of P from anaerobic digestion effluent that was collected from a domestic wastewater treatment plant. The influence of the electrode distance on P removal and precipitation was investigated. In addition, the influence of the electrolysis time on the chemical structure and composition of the P precipitate was evaluated from the viewpoint of utilising the P precipitate as fertiliser. Regardless of the electrode distance (10, 5 and 1 mm), PO43-, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were removed. The bulk solution pH increased during electrolysis because of the consumption of generated H+ as HCO3- transitioned to H2CO3 near the anode. A greater increase in the bulk solution pH was observed when the electrode distance was narrowed because of the enhanced H+ consumption. Narrowing the electrode distance reduced the energy consumption for P precipitation. The increase in the bulk solution pH with the narrowing electrode distance changed the dominant P precipitation pathway from onto the cathode to in the bulk solution. X-ray diffraction spectra of the precipitates showed that increasing the electrolysis time transformed amorphous P to hydroxyapatite and struvite. Most P existed in a citric acid-soluble form, which is recommended for use as a slow P release fertiliser. There were no significant changes in the citric acid-soluble P content of the precipitates with increasing electrolysis time. Therefore, increasing the electrolysis time has little influence on the suitability of the precipitate as a slow P release fertiliser.

Phosphorus is a non-replaceable and limited resource, whose future drought is a matter of concern. Its recovery from wastewater has gained attention as a method of making the recovered phosphorus available for beneficial use. This study applied electrolysis with a platinum-coated titanium electrode to an actual anaerobic digestion effluent and investigated the phosphorus removal and precipitation characteristics with various current values. The separation of the phosphorus precipitate from the sludge residue and the usefulness of the polarity inversion to recover the phosphorus precipitate were evaluated. The availability of the recovered precipitate as a fertiliser was also demonstrated. The anaerobic digestion effluent after the centrifugal dehydration process with a coagulant was collected from a wastewater treatment plant. Phosphorus was precipitated as a form of calcium phosphate, including hydroxyapatite, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The generated gases from the electrodes during the electrolysis floated and condensed the sludge residue, leading to successful separation of the phosphorus precipitate from the sludge residue. The polarity inversion successfully detached the phosphorus precipitate from the electrode, and at least 3 min polarity inversion was enough to detach the whole phosphorus precipitate. The submerging phosphorus precipitate contained abundant phosphorus (12.6%), in which citric-acid-soluble phosphorus accounted for 94.4%, and the utilisation of the precipitate as a slow-release phosphorus fertiliser was suggested.

Cultivation conditions influence microalgal cellular components, such as lipid accumulation under nutrient depletion, high light irradiation and salinity stress. In this study, indigenous microalgal consortia were cultivated in batch mode using an actual treated effluent. The temporal response of cellular components to the variations in nitrogen concentration and influence of light irradiation on the response were investigated. Prolonged exposure of indigenous microalgal consortia to nitrogen exhaustion had minor effects on total lipid accumulation and enhancement of energy content. Nitrogen replenishment was followed by immediate crude protein accumulation for growth recovery. Total lipid reduction was observed under light and dark conditions after nitrogen replenishment. A one-day lag after nitrogen replenishment in the total lipid reduction was revealed under nitrogen depletion; meanwhile, under nitrogen exhaustion, lipids were utilised as the primary carbon and/or energy source after replenishment, as represented by the decrease from 10.8% to 9.04% within 6 h after the replenishment.

Secondary effluent from wastewater treatment plants is suitable media for cultivating microalgae as a renewable energy source, and hydraulic retention time (HRT) control in culture is important to conduct well-planned outdoor indigenous microalgae cultivation with secondary effluent. This study revealed cultivation characteristics under various HRT by continuous 6-month experiments. In addition, effects of HRT on cultivation were determined by a mathematical model that described indigenous microalgae growth. Cultivated biomass mainly consisted of Chlorophyceae and its detritus regardless of HRT, and 5.93-14.8g/m(2)/day of biomass yield was obtained. The cultivated biomass had a stable higher heating value of 16kJ/g. Sensitivity analysis of the model suggests that HRT control had great effects on biomass yield, and 2-3days of HRT were recommended to obtain maximum biomass yield under certain weather conditions (temperature: approximately 12-25°C and solar radiation: approximately 8-19MJ/m(2)/day).

In this study, changes of microbial substrate metabolic patterns by BIOLOG assay were discussed through a sequential wastewater reuse process, which includes activated sludge and treated effluent in wastewater treatment plant and soil aquifer treatment (SAT), especially focussing on the surface sand layer in conjunction with the vadose zone, concerning sand depth. A SAT pilot-scale reactor, in which the height of packed sand was 237 cm (vadose zone: 17 cm and saturated zone 220 cm), was operated and fed continuously by discharged anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O) treated water. Continuous water quality measurements over a period of 10 months indicated that the treatment performance of the reactor, such as 83.2% dissolved organic carbon removal, appeared to be stable. Core sampling was conducted for the surface sand to a 30 cm depth, and the sample was divided into six 5 cm sections. Microbial activities, as evaluated by fluorescein diacetate, sharply decreased with increasing distance from the surface of the 30 cm core sample, which included significant decreases only 5 cm from the top surface. A similar microbial metabolic pattern containing a high degree of carbohydrates was obtained among the activated sludge, A2O treated water (influent to the SAT reactor) and the 0-5 cm layer of sand. Meanwhile, the 10-30 cm sand core layers showed dramatically different metabolic patterns containing a high degree of carboxylic acid and esters, and it is possible that the metabolic pattern exhibited by the 5-10 cm layer is at a midpoint of the changing pattern. This suggests that the removal of different organic compounds by biodegradation would be expected to occur in the activated sludge and in the SAT sand layers immediately below 5 cm from the top surface. It is possible that changes in the composition of the organic matter and/or transit of the limiting factor for microbial activities from carbon to phosphorus might have contributed to the observed dramatic changes in SAT metabolic patterns.

Field surveys on persistent organic pollutant (POP) bioaccumulation were conducted with oysters, clams and scallops whose consumption amount accounted for large shares in the total consumption of shellfish in Japan. There was no numerical difference in bioaccumulation characteristics between oysters, clams, scallops, Corbicula and Mytilus galloprovincialis. Therefore, it was clear that the bioaccumulation characteristics in oysters, clams and scallops, which are important for food, could be ascertained by using the monitoring results with Corbicula and M. galloprovincialis which are easily sampled in various water areas in the world. Non-cancer risk (hazard quotient, HQ) and cancer risk (excess cancer risk, ΔR) via shellfish ranged from 10⁻8 to 10⁻4 and from 10⁻¹¹ to 10⁻7, respectively, at sampling points, which showed the risks of POP exposure via shellfish to be low enough. However, concerning the intake of other food, the importance of dieldrin monitoring should be suggested in Japan. Based on these results, the effectiveness of primary risk assessment could be suggested for screening chemicals whose preferential monitoring is needed.

The applicability of Corbicula as a bioindicator for monitoring organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in fresh and brackish waters is presented here. Differences in isomer compositions and OCP bioaccumulation levels were analyzed in western Japan and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. Isomer compositions of DDTs, chlordanes, and HCHs were significantly different between the two areas because of their different historical uses and property of the chemicals. This is represented by the (DDE + DDD)/DDT ratio in Corbicula, ranging 4.9-39 in western Japan and 1.1-2.4 in the PRD. However, isomer compositions in Corbicula reflected those in water, and the different patterns in Corbicula likely reflected the usage history. Concentrations of dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, and volatile suspended solids in water, and the difference in species did not influence OCP bioaccumulative levels in Corbicula when conducting biomonitoring. These levels are likely similar to those in Mytilus galloprovincialis. Therefore, Corbicula could be an appropriate bioindicator for monitoring OCPs in fresh and brackish waters.
