RESUMO

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft delivered samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu to Earth. Some of the sample particles show evidence of micrometeoroid impacts, which occurred on the asteroid surface. Among those, particles A0067 and A0094 have flat surfaces on which a large number of microcraters and impact melt splashes are observed. Two impact melt splashes and one microcrater were analyzed to unveil the nature of the objects that impacted the asteroid surface. The melt splashes consist mainly of Mg-Fe-rich glassy silicates and Fe-Ni sulfides. The microcrater trapped an impact melt consisting mainly of Mg-Fe-rich glassy silicate, Fe-Ni sulfides, and minor silica-rich glass. These impact melts show a single compositional trend indicating mixing of Ryugu surface materials and impactors having chondritic chemical compositions. The relict impactor in one of the melt splashes shows mineralogical similarity with anhydrous chondritic interplanetary dust particles having a probable cometary origin. The chondritic micrometeoroids probably impacted the Ryugu surface during its residence in a near-Earth orbit.

RESUMO

Human mentality develops with age and is altered in psychiatric disorders, though their underlying mechanism is unknown. In this study, we analyzed nanometer-scale three-dimensional structures of brain tissues of the anterior cingulate cortex from eight schizophrenia and eight control cases. The distribution profiles of neurite curvature of the control cases showed a trend depending on their age, resulting in an age-correlated decrease in the standard deviation of neurite curvature (Pearson's r = -0.80, p = 0.018). In contrast to the control cases, the schizophrenia cases deviate upward from this correlation, exhibiting a 60% higher neurite curvature compared with the controls (p = 7.8 × 10-4). The neurite curvature also showed a correlation with a hallucination score (Pearson's r = 0.80, p = 1.8 × 10-4), indicating that neurite structure is relevant to brain function. This report is based on our 3D analysis of human brain tissues over a decade and is unprecedented in terms of the number of cases. We suggest that neurite curvature plays a pivotal role in brain aging and can be used as a hallmark to exploit a novel treatment of schizophrenia.

RESUMO

The relationship between the magnetorheology of bimodal magnetic elastomers with high concentrations (60 vol %) of plastic beads with diameters of 8 or 200 µm and the meso-structure of the particles was investigated. Dynamic viscoelasticity measurements revealed that the change in storage modulus of the bimodal elastomer with 200 µm beads was 2.8 × 105 Pa at a magnetic field of 370 mT. The change in the storage modulus for monomodal elastomer without beads was 4.9 × 104 Pa. The bimodal elastomer with 8 µm beads hardly responded to the magnetic field. In-situ observation for the particle morphology was performed using synchrotron X-ray CT. For the bimodal elastomer with 200 µm beads, a highly aligned structure of magnetic particles was observed in the gaps between the beads when the magnetic field was applied. On the other hand, for the bimodal elastomer with 8 µm beads, no chain structure of magnetic particles was observed. The orientation angle between the long axis of the aggregation of magnetic particles and the magnetic field direction was determined by an image analysis in three dimensions. The orientation angle varied from 56° to 11° for the bimodal elastomer with 200 µm beads and from 64° to 49° for that with 8 µm beads by applying the magnetic field. The orientation angle of the monomodal elastomer without beads changed from 63° to 21°. It was found that the addition of beads with a diameter of 200 µm linked the chains of magnetic particles, while beads with a diameter of 8 µm prevented the chain formation of the magnetic particles.

RESUMO

Without a protective atmosphere, space-exposed surfaces of airless Solar System bodies gradually experience an alteration in composition, structure and optical properties through a collective process called space weathering. The return of samples from near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu by Hayabusa2 provides the first opportunity for laboratory study of space-weathering signatures on the most abundant type of inner solar system body: a C-type asteroid, composed of materials largely unchanged since the formation of the Solar System. Weathered Ryugu grains show areas of surface amorphization and partial melting of phyllosilicates, in which reduction from Fe3+ to Fe2+ and dehydration developed. Space weathering probably contributed to dehydration by dehydroxylation of Ryugu surface phyllosilicates that had already lost interlayer water molecules and to weakening of the 2.7 µm hydroxyl (-OH) band in reflectance spectra. For C-type asteroids in general, this indicates that a weak 2.7 µm band can signify space-weathering-induced surface dehydration, rather than bulk volatile loss.

RESUMO

Hydrogen drastically embrittles high-strength aluminum alloys, which impedes efforts to develop ultrastrong components in the aerospace and transportation industries. Understanding and utilizing the interaction of hydrogen with core strengthening elements in aluminum alloys, particularly nanoprecipitates, are critical to break this bottleneck. Herein, we show that hydrogen embrittlement of aluminum alloys can be largely suppressed by switching nanoprecipitates from the η phase to the T phase without changing the overall chemical composition. The T phase strongly traps hydrogen and resists hydrogen-assisted crack growth, with a more than 60% reduction in the areal fractions of cracks. The T phase-induced reduction in the concentration of hydrogen at defects and interfaces, which facilitates crack growth, primarily contributes to the suppressed hydrogen embrittlement. Transforming precipitates into strong hydrogen traps is proven to be a potential mitigation strategy for hydrogen embrittlement in aluminum alloys.

RESUMO

In situ observation of the migration and structure formation of magnetic particles in polyurethane elastomers was carried out by X-ray computed tomography using synchrotron radiation. The mean diameter of the magnetic particles was 7.0 µm, and the volume fraction was ϕ= 0.24 at its maximum. The exposure time was 100 ms/frame, and the pixel size was 0.458 µm/pixel. The orientation angle and the volume fraction of the maximum aggregate were analyzed using commercial software for image analysis. The orientation angle for magnetic elastomers with ϕ = 0.24 was approximately 55° at 0 mT and decreased remarkably with the magnetic field. At magnetic fields above 150 mT, the orientation angle gradually decreased with the field and showed a constant value of 38° at 300 mT, suggesting that magnetic particles move and form a chain-like structure although the chains do not align perfectly in the direction of the magnetic field. On the other hand, the volume fraction of the maximum aggregate was constant at magnetic fields below 100 mT, and it significantly increased with the field, indicating that magnetic particles were connected to each other and developed into a macroscopic structure with anisotropy. Dynamic viscoelastic measurements revealed that the storage modulus of the magnetic elastomers cannot be simply scaled by the orientation angle. It was also found that the volume fraction of the maximum aggregate is a good parameter for explaining the huge increase in the storage modulus. The dynamic movement of magnetic particles when a magnetic field of 300 mT was switched on and off was also successfully observed. When the field was switched on, magnetic particles connected instantly and their aggregates were rapidly elongated in the direction of the magnetic field. When the field was switched off, some of the connections between aggregates were broken; however, most of the aggregates did not return to the original position even 5 min after being switched off.

RESUMO

An X-ray computed nano-tomography (nano-CT) system has been established at the BL33XU beamline of SPring-8. The optical system consists of pseudo-Köhler illumination with a sector condenser zone plate, an apodization Fresnel zone plate as the objective lens, and a Zernike phase plate. The imaging detector is a fiber-coupling type X-ray camera. The performance of the X-ray nano-CT system was confirmed by imaging an X-ray test chart. The system was subsequently applied to the observation of a microporous layer for polymer electrolyte fuel cells and a simulated microporous layer including liquid water. The nano-CT system, which can perform a computed tomography measurement in less than 4 min, allowed visualization of a spherical water droplet produced in the microporous layer. In the present study, the shape of water droplets in a nanoscale porous structure is investigated.

RESUMO

Gene vectors to treat cystic fibrosis lung disease should be targeted to the conducting airways, as peripheral lung transduction does not offer therapeutic benefit. Viral transduction efficiency is directly related to the vector residence time. However, delivered fluids such as gene vectors naturally spread to the alveoli during inspiration, and therapeutic particles of any form are rapidly cleared via mucociliary transit. Extending gene vector residence time within the conducting airways is important, but hard to achieve. Gene vector conjugated magnetic particles that can be guided to the conducting airway surfaces could improve regional targeting. Due to the challenges of in-vivo visualisation, the behaviour of such small magnetic particles on the airway surface in the presence of an applied magnetic field is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to use synchrotron imaging to visualise the in-vivo motion of a range of magnetic particles in the trachea of anaesthetised rats to examine the dynamics and patterns of individual and bulk particle behaviour in-vivo. We also then assessed whether lentiviral-magnetic particle delivery in the presence of a magnetic field increases transduction efficiency in the rat trachea. Synchrotron X-ray imaging revealed the behaviour of magnetic particles in stationary and moving magnetic fields, both in-vitro and in-vivo. Particles could not easily be dragged along the live airway surface with the magnet, but during delivery deposition was focussed within the field of view where the magnetic field was the strongest. Transduction efficiency was also improved six-fold when the lentiviral-magnetic particles were delivered in the presence of a magnetic field. Together these results show that lentiviral-magnetic particles and magnetic fields may be a valuable approach for improving gene vector targeting and increasing transduction levels in the conducting airways in-vivo.

RESUMO

The initial stage of fatigue failure has not been thoroughly clarified for carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). Although the initiation of fatigue cracks has been regarded to be interfacial debonding between the carbon fiber and polymer matrix, their detection among numerous carbon fibers, whose diameter is only 7 µm, is extremely difficult. In this study, a single carbon fiber was transversely embedded in a dumbbell-shaped epoxy sample to focus on the interfacial debonding and was observed using synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray computed tomography (CT). A tabletop fatigue testing machine driven by a piezoelectric actuator was developed to apply static and cyclic loads along the beamline. SR X-ray multiscale CT imaging was conducted by switching between an absorption-contrast projection method (micro-CT) and a phase-contrast imaging-type X-ray microscopic CT (nano-CT). The carbon fiber was entirely captured by micro-CT and then magnified at both ends on the free surfaces. Nano-CT clearly visualized the interfacial debonding under 30 MPa static tensile load and the implication of the coalescence of nano-voids along the interface under 50 MPa. Under cyclic loads, the interfacial debonding gradually progressed under a 8-40 MPa sinusoidal stress after 10,000 cycles, whereas it did not propagate under a stress below 30 MPa.

RESUMO

The characterization of subsurface cracks induced by indentation is a challenge for understanding contact damage, impact, wear, erosion, and abrasion of brittle materials, because the crack pattern observable on the surface is only a part of the total crack system. Here we applied synchrotron X-ray multiscale tomography to observe the morphology of subsurface cracks produced by Vickers indentation in a novel CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramic with plate-like crystals forming a house-of-cards microstructure. It revealed a diverse type of crack systems around the semispherical microcrack zone beneath the indent, including a new mode II inclined lateral crack driven by the maximum shear stress. Tomography images provided knowledge on how the heterogeneous microstructure affected the toughening processes such as crack deflection, crack bridging, and microcracking.

RESUMO

Although all vertebrate cerebella contain granule cells, Purkinje cells, and efferent neurons, the cellular arrangement and neural circuitry are highly diverse. In amniotes, cerebellar efferent neurons form clusters, deep cerebellar nuclei, lie deep in the cerebellum, and receive synaptic inputs from Purkinje cells but not granule cells. However, in the cerebellum of teleosts, the efferent neurons, called eurydendroid cells, lie near the cell bodies of Purkinje cells and receive inputs both from axons of Purkinje cells and granule cell parallel fibers. It is largely unknown how the cerebellar structure evolved in ray-finned fish (actinopterygians). To address this issue, we analyzed the cerebellum of a bichir Polypterus senegalus, one of the most basal actinopterygians. We found that the cell bodies of Purkinje cells are not aligned in a layer; incoming climbing fibers terminate mainly on the basal portion of Purkinje cells, revealing that the Polypterus cerebellum has unique features among vertebrate cerebella. Retrograde labeling and marker analyses of the efferent neurons revealed that their cell bodies lie in restricted granular areas but not as deep cerebellar nuclei in the cerebellar white matter. The efferent neurons have long dendrites like eurydendroid cells, although they do not reach the molecular layer. Our findings suggest that the efferent system of the bichir cerebellum has intermediate features between teleosts and amniote vertebrates, and provides a model to understand the basis generating diversity in actinopterygian cerebella.

RESUMO

The locomotor system is highly bilateral at the macroscopic level. Homochirality of biological molecules is fully compatible with the bilateral body. However, whether and how single-handed cells contribute to the bilateral locomotor system is obscure. Here, exploiting the small number of cells in the swimming tadpole larva of the ascidian Ciona, we analyzed morphology of the tail at cellular and subcellular scales. Quantitative phase-contrast X-ray tomographic microscopy revealed a high-density midline structure ventral to the notochord in the tail. Muscle cell nuclei on each side of the notochord were roughly bilaterally aligned. However, fluorescence microscopy detected left-right asymmetry of myofibril inclination relative to the longitudinal axis of the tail. Zernike phase-contrast X-ray tomographic microscopy revealed the presence of left-handed helices of myofibrils in muscle cells on both sides. Therefore, the locomotor system of ascidian larvae harbors symmetry-breaking left-handed helical cells, while maintaining bilaterally symmetrical cell alignment. These results suggest that bilateral animals can override cellular homochirality to generate the bilateral locomotor systems at the supracellular scale.

RESUMO

The quality of a semiconductor, which strongly affects its performance, can be estimated by its photoluminescence, which closely relates to the defect and impurity energy levels. In light of this, it is necessary to have a measurement method for photoluminescence properties with spatial resolution at the sub-micron or nanoscale. In this study, a mapping method for local photoluminescence properties was developed using a focused synchrotron radiation X-ray beam to evaluate localized photoluminescence in bi-layered semiconductors. CuO/Cu2O/ZnO semiconductors were prepared on F:SnO2/soda-lime glass substrates by means of electrodeposition. The synchrotron radiation experiment was conducted at the beamline 20XU in the Japanese synchrotron radiation facility, SPring-8. By mounting the high-sensitivity spectrum analyzer near the edge of the CuO/Cu2O/ZnO devices, luminescence maps of the semiconductor were obtained with unit sizes of 0.3 µm × 0.3 µm. The devices were scanned in 2D. Light emission 2D maps were created by classifying the obtained spectra based on emission energy already reported by M. Izaki, et al. Band-like structures corresponding to the stacking layers of CuO/Cu2O/ZnO were visualized. The intensities of emissions at different energies at each position can be associated with localized photovoltaic properties. This result suggests the validity of the method for investigation of localized photoluminescence related to the semiconductor quality.

RESUMO

Perfluorosulfonated ionomers are the most successful ion-exchange membranes at an industrial scale. One recent, cutting-edge application of perfluorosulfonated ionomers is in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). In PEFCs, the ionomers are used as a component of the catalyst layer (CL) in addition to functioning as a proton-exchange membrane. In this study, the microstructures in the CLs of PEFCs were characterized by combined synchrotron X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. The CL comprised a catalyst, a support, and an ionomer. Fractal dimensional analysis of the combined ultrasmall- and small-angle X-ray scattering profiles indicated that the carbon-black-supported Pt catalyst (Pt/CB) surface was covered with the ionomer in the CL. Anomalous X-ray scattering revealed that the Pt catalyst nanoparticles on the carbon surfaces were aggregated in the CLs. These findings are consistent with the ionomer/catalyst microstructures and ionomer coverage on the Pt/CB surface obtained from TEM observations.

RESUMO

Brain blood vessels constitute a micrometer-scale vascular network responsible for supply of oxygen and nutrition. In this study, we analyzed cerebral tissues of the anterior cingulate cortex and superior temporal gyrus of schizophrenia cases and age/gender-matched controls by using synchrotron radiation microtomography or micro-CT in order to examine the three-dimensional structure of cerebral vessels. Over 1 m of cerebral blood vessels was traced to build Cartesian-coordinate models, which were then used for calculating structural parameters including the diameter and curvature of the vessels. The distribution of vessel outer diameters showed a peak at 7-9 µm, corresponding to the diameter of the capillaries. Mean curvatures of the capillary vessels showed a significant correlation to the mean curvatures of neurites, while the mean capillary diameter was almost constant, independent of the cases. Our previous studies indicated that the neurites of schizophrenia cases are thin and tortuous compared to controls. The curved capillaries with a constant diameter should occupy a nearly constant volume, while neurons suffering from neurite thinning should have reduced volumes, resulting in a volumetric imbalance between the neurons and the vessels. We suggest that the observed structural correlation between neurons and blood vessels is related to neurovascular abnormalities in schizophrenia.

RESUMO

Water is abundant as solid ice in the solar system and plays important roles in its evolution. Water is preserved in carbonaceous chondrites as hydroxyl and/or H2O molecules in hydrous minerals, but has not been found as liquid. To uncover such liquid, we performed synchrotron-based x-ray computed nanotomography and transmission electron microscopy with a cryo-stage of the aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrite Sutter's Mill. We discovered CO2-bearing fluid (CO2/H2O > ~0.15) in a nanosized inclusion incorporated into a calcite crystal, appearing as CO2 ice and/or CO2 hydrate at 173 K. This is direct evidence of dynamic evolution of the solar system, requiring the Sutter's Mill's parent body to have formed outside the CO2 snow line and later transportation to the inner solar system because of Jupiter's orbital instability.

RESUMO

In this study, high-energy x-ray nanotomography (nano-computed tomography, nano-CT) based on full-field x-ray microscopy was developed. Fine two-dimensional and three-dimensional (3D) structures with linewidths of 75 nm-100 nm were successfully resolved in the x-ray energy range of 15 keV-37.7 keV. The effective field of view was ∼60 µm, and the typical measurement time for one tomographic scan was 30 min-60 min. The optical system was established at the 250-m-long beamline 20XU of SPring-8 to realize greater than 100× magnification images. An apodization Fresnel zone plate (A-FZP), specifically developed for high-energy x-ray imaging, was used as the objective lens. The design of the A-FZP for high-energy imaging is discussed, and its diffraction efficiency distribution is evaluated. The spatial resolutions of this system at energies of 15 keV, 20 keV, 30 keV, and 37.7 keV were examined using a test object, and the measured values are shown to be in good agreement with theoretical values. High-energy x-ray nano-CT in combination with x-ray micro-CT is applied for 3D multiscale imaging. The entire bodies of bulky samples, ∼1 mm in diameter, were measured with the micro-CT, and the nano-CT was used for nondestructive observation of regions of interest. Examples of multiscale CT measurements involving carbon steel, mouse bones, and a meteorite are discussed.

RESUMO

The cerebral cortex is composed of multiple cortical areas that exert a wide variety of brain functions. Although human brain neurons are genetically and areally mosaic, the three-dimensional structural differences between neurons in different brain areas or between the neurons of different individuals have not been delineated. Here we report a nanometer-scale geometric analysis of brain tissues of the superior temporal gyrus of schizophrenia and control cases. The results of the analysis and a comparison with results for the anterior cingulate cortex indicated that (1) neuron structures are significantly dissimilar between brain areas and that (2) the dissimilarity varies from case to case. The structural diverseness was mainly observed in terms of the neurite curvature that inversely correlates with the diameters of the neurites and spines. The analysis also revealed the geometric differences between the neurons of the schizophrenia and control cases. The schizophrenia cases showed a thin and tortuous neuronal network compared with the controls, suggesting that the neuron structure is associated with the disorder. The area dependency of the neuron structure and its diverseness between individuals should represent the individuality of brain functions.

RESUMO

Rheological behavior of silicate melts controls the dynamics of volcanic eruptions. Previous experimental studies have investigated melt viscosity and found non-Newtonian behavior of the melt under a high shear rate. However, the relationship between macroscopic rheology and atomic-scale behavior under shear remains unclear. We developed an experimental system for time-resolved x-ray diffraction (XRD) at high temperature to investigate the atomic-scale structural change in melts under shear. The manufactured deformation apparatus and heating furnace were set on the synchrotron radiation x-ray beamline (BL20XU) of SPring-8; the XRD pattern of the melt at high temperature could be observed using this system because the furnace mainly consists of a boron nitride cylinder with high x-ray transmittance. Here, we report results of fiber elongation experiments for a soda-lime melt. Melt fibers with ∼0.7 mm in diameter and ∼27 mm long were elongated at 100 µm sec-1 at temperatures of 595 °C and 620 °C, and the XRD pattern was obtained every 100 msec. Brittle failure of the melt occurred at 595 °C, whereas the melt viscously elongated at 620 °C. The XRD patterns obtained during elongation did not indicate any clear change immediately before brittle failure. The intensity of the XRD pattern decreased with the elongation at 620 °C, although there was no clear variation in its shape. These results indicate that the atomic-scale structure observed by XRD may not change during the elastic and viscous elongation of the soda-lime melt. This experimental system will be further developed and applied to more polymerized and natural silicate melts.

RESUMO

In order to achieve a nanometer-scale resolution in an x-ray microscopy system, a Gabor-type hologram was produced by eliminating the zero-order term of the object diffraction pattern. In this system, a Fresnel zone plate was used for strong illumination of an object, and the zero-order diffraction was physically eliminated by a center stop. An accurate phase plate of π/2 in the Zernike method was numerically created, and the phase-contrast image was realized. The theoretical resolution was 19.8 nm. We proved that a gold nanocube with a size of 50 nm can be reconstructed with the predicted resolution.
