RESUMO

Currently, research on Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) predominantly focuses on UV/visible photodetection and UV emission, seemingly overlooking the significance of Ag in enhancing deep ultraviolet photon detection. In this work, (In0.3Ga0.7)2O3 thin films were fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Due to the unique photoabsorbance characteristic and better interaction with photons of small-sized AgNPs, they effectively suppress the UVB absorbance caused by energy band engineering in the (In0.3Ga0.7)2O3 thin film while enhancing photoabsorbance in UVC due to the surface plasmon effect. Therefore, under the synergistic effect of enhanced photon absorbance and hot electron transfer, the performance of the detector is significantly improved, and its responsivity (R), external quantum efficiency, and detectivity (D*) are 193 mA/W, approximately 100%, and 1014 Jones, respectively, at a bias of -6 V. The fast response time and decay time are 634.6 and 194.1 ms, respectively; the rapid decay facilitated by AgNPs is attributed to the increased indirect recombination rate. AgNPs exhibit excellent narrowband response characteristics and absorbance properties in specific wavelength bands for the InGaO photodetector. This research lays the foundation for the practical application of localized surface plasmon resonance-enhanced photon-sensing capabilities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Elevated systemic inflammation, common in obesity, increases cardiovascular disease risk. Obesity is linked to a pro-inflammatory gut microbiota that releases uremic toxins like p-cresylsulfate (PCS) and indoxyl sulfate (IS), which are implicated in coronary atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, and chronic kidney disease. This study examines the relationship between total PCS and IS levels and central obesity in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 373 consecutive patients with stable CAD from a single center. Serum levels of total PCS and IS were measured using an Ultra Performance LC System. Central obesity was evaluated using a body shape index (ABSI) and conicity index (CI). Six obesity-related proteins were also analyzed. Structural equation modeling (SEM) assessed direct and indirect effects of total PCS, IS, and the six obesity-related proteins on central obesity. RESULTS: Significant positive correlations were found between total PCS and IS with waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (r = 0.174, p = 0.005 for total PCS; r = 0.144, p = 0.021 for IS), CI (r = 0.273, p < 0.0001 for total PCS; r = 0.260, p < 0.0001 for IS), and ABSI (r = 0.297, p < 0.0001 for total PCS; r = 0.285, p < 0.0001 for IS) in male patients, but not in female patients. Multivariate analysis showed higher odds ratios (ORs) for elevated CI (OR = 3.18, 95% CI: 1.54-6.75, p = 0.002) and ABSI (OR = 3.28, 95% CI: 1.54-7.24, p = 0.002) in patients with high PCS levels, and elevated CI (OR = 2.30, 95% CI: 1.15-4.66, p = 0.018) and ABSI (OR = 2.22, 95% CI: 1.07-4.72, p = 0.033) in those with high IS levels, compared to those with low toxin levels. SEM analysis indicated that total PCS and IS directly impacted central obesity indices and indirectly influenced central adiposity measures like WHR through high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (ß = 0.252, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Circulating total PCS and IS contribute to central obesity in male patients with stable CAD, partially mediated by hs-CRP.

RESUMO

Simplifying the manufacturing processes of multilayered high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is yet of vital importance for their cost-effective production. Herein, an in situ blending strategy is presented for co-deposition of electron transport layer (ETL) and perovskite absorber by incorporating (3-(7-butyl-1,3,6,8-tetraoxo-3,6,7,8-tetrahydrobenzo- [lmn][3,8]phenanthrolin-2(1H)-yl)propyl)phosphonic acid (NDP) into the perovskite precursor solutions. The phosphonic acid-like anchoring group coupled with its large molecular size drives the migration of NDP toward indium tin oxide (ITO) surface to form a distinct ETL during perovskite film forming. This strategy circumvents the critical wetting issue and simultaneously improves the interfacial charge collection efficiencies. Consequently, n-i-p PSCs based on in situ blended NDP achieve a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.01%, which is one of the highest values for PSCs using organic ETLs. This performance is notably higher than that of ETL-free (21.19%) and independently spin-coated (21.42%) counterparts. More encouragingly, the in situ blending strategy dramatically enhances the device stability under harsh conditions by retaining over 90% of initial efficiencies after 250 h in 100 °C or 65% humidity storage. Moreover, this strategy is universally adaptable to various perovskite compositions, device architectures, and electron transport materials (ETMs), showing great potential for applications in diverse optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Naphthalene diimides (NDI) are widely serving as the skeleton to construct electron transport materials (ETMs) for optoelectronic devices. However, most of the reported NDI-based ETMs suffer from poor interfaces with the perovskite which deteriorates the carrier extraction and device stability. Here, a representative design concept for editing the peripheral groups of NDI molecules to achieve multifunctional properties is introduced. The resulting molecule 2,7-bis(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone (NDI-C4F) incorporated with hydrophobic fluorine units contributes to the prevention of excessive molecular aggregation, the improvement of surface wettability and the formation of strong chemical coordination with perovskite precursors. All these features favor retarding the perovskite crystallization and achieving superior buried interfaces, which subsequently promote charge collection and improve the structural compatibility between perovskite and ETMs. The corresponding PSCs based on low-temperature processed NDI-C4F yield a record efficiency of 23.21%, which is the highest reported value for organic ETMs in n-i-p PSCs. More encouragingly, the unencapsulated devices with NDI-C4F demonstrate extraordinary stability by retaining over 90% of their initial PCEs after 2600 h in air. This work provides an alternative molecular strategy to engineer the buried interfaces and can trigger further development of organic ETMs toward reliable PSCs.

RESUMO

2 in. bulk ß-Ga2O3 single crystals are successfully grown by the edge-defined film-fed growth method with a homemade furnace system. By considering the significance of wafer quality in future mass manufacture, a nine-point characterization method is developed to evaluate the full-scale quality of the processed 2 in. (100)-orientated ß-Ga2O3 single-crystal wafers. Crystalline and structural characteristics were evaluated using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, revealing decent crystalline quality with a mean full width at half-maximum value of 60.8 arcsec and homogeneous bonding structures. The statistical root-mean-square surface roughness, determined from nine scanning areas, was found to be only 0.196 nm, indicating superior surface quality. Linear optical properties and defect levels were further investigated using UV-visible spectrophotometry and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The high wafer-scale quality of the processed ß-Ga2O3 wafers meets the requirements for homoepitaxial growth substrates in electronic and photonic devices with vertical configurations.

RESUMO

Rising wide bandgap semiconductor gallium oxide (Ga2O3) displays huge potential in performing solar-blind photodetection, with constraint in narrow detection wavebands in nature, whereas bandgap modulation through the introduction of exotic atoms into Ga2O3 has an essential effect on the tunable performance of photodetectors and the detection waveband. Here, a novel method for the preparation of (InxGa1-x)2O3 alloy films is proposed, and the continuous tuning of the bandgap in the range of 3.70-4.99 eV is achieved by varying the In-doping content. Alloy-based metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors were fabricated, achieving a peak responsivity between 254 and 295 nm, superior performance compared to Ga2O3 photodetectors, with a photo-to-dark current ratio as high as 106, and a better optical image-sensing capability. This study offers new insight for high-performance detection of full solar-blind waveband ultraviolet light.

RESUMO

Objective: Breast cancer is the second most common malignancy globally and a leading cause of cancer death in women. Analysis of factors related to disease-free survival (DFS) has improved understanding of the disease and characteristics related to recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of DFS in patients with breast cancer to enable the identification of patients at high risk who may benefit from prevention interventions. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 559 women with breast cancer who underwent treatment between 2004 and 2022. The study endpoint was DFS. Recurrence was defined as local recurrence, regional recurrence, distant metastases, contralateral breast cancer, other second primary cancer, and death. Baseline tumor-related characteristics, treatment-related characteristics, sociodemographic and biochemical data were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards analysis. Results: The median DFS was 45 months (range, 2 to 225 months). Breast cancer recurred in 86 patients (15.4%), of whom 10 had local recurrence, 10 had regional recurrence, 17 had contralateral breast cancer, 29 had distant metastases, 10 had second primary cancer, and 10 patients died. Multivariate forward stepwise Cox regression analysis showed that AJCC stage III, Ki67 ≥14%, albumin, platelet, and red cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) were predictors of worse DFS. In addition, the effects of albumin, platelet, and RDW-SD on disease recurrence were confirmed by structural equation model (SEM) analysis. Conclusion: In addition to the traditional predictors of worse DFS such as AJCC stage III and Ki67 ≥14%, lower pretreatment circulating albumin, higher pretreatment circulating platelet count and RDW-SD could significantly predict worse DFS in this study, and SEM delineated possible causal pathways and inter-relationships of albumin, platelet, and RDW-SD contributing to the disease recurrence among Chinese women with breast cancer.

RESUMO

Background: Transcription factor 21 (TCF21, epicardin, capsuling, pod-1) is expressed in the epicardium and is involved in the regulation of cell fate and differentiation via epithelial-mesenchymal transformation during development of the heart. In addition, TCF21 can suppress the differentiation of epicardial cells into vascular smooth muscle cells and promote cardiac fibroblast development. This study aimed to explore whether TCF21 gene (12190287G/C) variants affect coronary artery disease risk. Methods: We enrolled 381 patients who had stable angina, 138 with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and 276 healthy subjects. Genotyping of rs12190287 of the TCF21 gene was performed. Results: Higher frequencies of the CC genotype were found in the patients with stable angina/STEMI than in the healthy controls. After adjusting for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, age, sex, smoking, body mass index and hyperlipidemia, the patients with the CC genotype of the TCF21 gene were associated with 2.49- and 9.19-fold increased risks of stable angina and STEMI, respectively, compared to the patients with the GG genotype. Furthermore, TCF21 CC genotypes showed positive correlations with both stable angina and STEMI, whereas TCF21 GG genotypes exhibited a negative correlation with STEMI. Moreover, the stable angina and STEMI patients with the CC genotype had significantly elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels than those with the GG genotype. In addition, significant associations were found between type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia with TCF21 gene polymorphisms (p for trend < 0.05). Conclusion: TCF21 gene polymorphisms may increase susceptibility to stable angina and STEMI.

RESUMO

High efficiency and long-term stability are the prerequisites for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, inadequate and non-uniform doping of hole transport layers (HTLs) still limits the efficiency improvements, while the intrinsic instability of HTLs caused by ion migration and accumulation is difficult to be addressed by external encapsulation. Here it is shown that the addition of a conjugated phosphonic acid (CPA) to the Spiro-OMeTAD benchmark HTL can greatly enhance the device efficiency and intrinsic stability. Featuring an optimal diprotic-acid structure, indolo(3,2-b)carbazole-5,11-diylbis(butane-4,1-diyl) bis(phosphonic acid) (BCZ) is developed to promote morphological uniformity and mitigate ion migration across both perovskite/HTL and HTL/Ag interfaces, leading to superior charge conductivity, reinforced ion immobilization, and remarkable film stability. The dramatically improved interfacial charge collection endows BCZ-based n-i-p PSCs with a champion power conversion efficiency of 24.51%. More encouragingly, the BCZ-based devices demonstrate remarkable stability under harsh environmental conditions by retaining 90% of initial efficiency after 3000 h in air storage. This work paves the way for further developing robust organic HTLs for optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Background: Several observational studies have investigated the association between myeloperoxidase (MPO) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, the nature of this relationship remains uncertain due to potential selection and confounding biases. To resolve this, we conducted a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to scrutinize the causal relationship between MPO and OSA. Methods: Instrumental variables (IVs) for OSA were sourced from the publicly available FinnGen dataset, encompassing 38,998 OSA cases and 336,659 controls. Data on MPO were sourced from a study of 21,758 individuals conducted by the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The primary MR analysis utilized the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, with MR-Egger intercept and leave-one-out methods assessing pleiotropy and Cochran's Q test determining heterogeneity. Results: The IVW analysis indicated a causal relationship between heightened MPO levels and an increased incidence of OSA. Individuals with elevated MPO levels manifested a higher propensity to develop OSA, exhibiting an odds ratio (OR) of 1.075 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.011-1.143 (p = 0.021). Conversely, the reciprocal analysis unveiled no significant association between OSA and heightened MPO levels (p = 0.643). No directional pleiotropy was identified through the MR-Egger intercept test (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our study provides evidence of an association between elevated MPO levels and an increased incidence of OSA. However, OSA does not necessarily lead to elevated MPO levels. When patients present with high MPO levels, screening for OSA may be advisable, considering their clinical characteristics.

RESUMO

In this work, a solar-blind UV metal-semiconductor Schottky photodiode array is constructed by using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition grown ε-Ga2O3 thin film, possessing high-performance and self-powered characteristics, toward dual-mode (self-powered and biased modes) binary light communication. For the array unit, the responsivity, specific detectivity, and external quantum efficiency are 30.8 A/W/6.3 × 10-2 A/W, 1.51 × 104%/30.9%, 1.28 × 1014/5.4 × 1012 Jones for biased (-10 V)/self-powered operation. The rise and decay time are 0.19 and 7.96 ms at biased modes, respectively, suggesting an ability to trace fast light signal. As an array, the deviation of photocurrent is only 4.3%, highlighting the importance of accurate information communication. Through certain definition of "1/0" binary digital information, the "NY" and "IC" characters are communicated to illustrate the self-powered and biased modes by right of ASCII codes, based on the prepared ε-Ga2O3 solar-blind UV Schottky photodiode array. This work made dual-mode binary deep-UV light communication come true and may well guide the development of UV optoelectronics.

RESUMO

The design of well-defined hierarchical free-standing electrodes for robust high-performance energy storage is challenging. We report herein that azo-linkage redox metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporate single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as flexible electrodes. The in situ-guided growth, crystallinity and morphology of UiO-66-NO2 MOFs were finely controlled in the presence of CNTs. The MOFs' covalent anchoring to CNTs and solvothermal grafting anthraquinone (AQ) pendants endow the hybrid (denoted as CNT@UiO-66-AQ) with greatly improved conductivity, charge storage pathways and electrochemical dynamics. The flexible CNT@UiO-66-AQ displays a highest areal specific capacitance of 302.3 mF cm-2 (at 1 mA cm-2) in -0.4~0.9 V potential window, together with 100% capacitance retention over 5000 cycles at 5 mA cm-2. Its assembled symmetrical supercapacitor (SSC) achieves a maximum energy density of 0.037 mWh cm-2 and a maximum power density of 10.4 mW cm-2, outperforming many MOFs-hybrids-based SSCs in the literature. Our work may open a new avenue for preparing azo-coupled redox MOFs hybrids with carbaneous substrates for high-performance robust aqueous energy storage.

RESUMO

As an ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor, gallium oxide (Ga2O3) has been extensively applied in solar-blind photodetectors (PDs) owing to the absorbance cut-off wavelength of shorter than 280 nm, and the optimized technologies of detection performance is seriously essential for its further usages. Herein, a feasible thermal reorder engineering method was performed through annealing Ga2O3films in vacuum, O2and oxygen plasma atmospheres, realizing to tune solar-blind photosensing performance of Ga2O3PDs. Thermal treatment, in fact a crystal reorder process, significantly suppressed the noise in Ga2O3-based PDs and enhanced the photo-sensitivity, with the dark current decreasing from 154.63 pA to 269 fA and photo-to-dark current ratio magically raising from 288 to 2.85 × 104. This achievement is dependent of energy-band modulation in Ga2O3semiconductor, that is certified by first-principles calculation. Additionally, annealing in oxygen atmospheres notably reduces the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the surface of films, thereby improving the performance of the PDs; the oxygen vacancy is extremely concerned in oxide semiconductors in the view of physics of surface defects. In all, this work could display a promising guidance for modulating the performance of PDs based on wide bandgap oxide semiconductor, especially for hot Ga2O3issue.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has been associated with vascular access (VA) dysfunction. The adipocytokine leptin can directly induce pro-inflammatory T helper 1 immune responses and the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation. We explored the association between plasma leptin and VA dysfunction in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HEMO). METHODS: A total of 344 consecutive patients who received anastomosis for VA at a single HEMO center between June 1, 2010 and December 31, 2021 were screened. Of these patients, 267 met the inclusion criteria and were included. ELISA was used to measure circulating levels of leptin. RESULTS: The VA dysfunction group had a higher leptin level than the patent VA group. A higher concentration of leptin was independently and significantly associated with an elevated risk of VA dysfunction. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that leptin, female sex, and hypertension were independently associated with VA dysfunction, even after adjusting for known biomarkers. We then evaluated the ability of leptin, female sex, and hypertension to predict the risk of VA dysfunction, and the area under the curve (AUC) for leptin was 0.626 (p = 0.0001). When leptin, female sex, and hypertension were added to this multivariate model, the AUC increased to 0.679 (p = 0.001) for leptin and hypertension, and 0.690 for leptin, hypertension, and female sex (p = 0.004). In addition, plasma leptin levels were associated with sex, body mass index, and hemoglobin. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to the association between leptin and VA dysfunction, hypertension and female sex independently predicted VA dysfunction in patients with HEMO.

RESUMO

Background: Notopterygium incisum K.C. Ting ex H.T. Chang, a synonym of Hansenia weberbaueriana (Fedde ex H. Wolff) Pimenov & Kljuykov, is an anti-inflammatory medicinal plant. Although abrnotopterol has been reported to be its primary active metabolite, the other metabolites and their mechanisms of action remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the potential mechanisms by which its active metabolites treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) through network analysis and experimental assessment. Methods: The metabolites and potential targets of Notopterygium incisum were extracted from public databases. We searched for OSAS-related genes in the Genecards, OMIM, PharmGkb, TTD, and DrugBank databases. Cytoscape 3.9.0 was used to construct the drug-target-disease network and screen for hub genes. Human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells were cultivated in normoxia and chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) medium for 24 h. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2(PTGS2) mRNA was detected using RT-qPCR, while PTGS2 and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) proteins were identified using Western blot analysis. Co-Immunoprecipitation (CoIP) and Western blotting were utilized to evaluate the ubiquitination of PTGS2 in HBE cells. Results: Pterostilbene and notopterol, isolated from Notopterygium incisum, had potential therapeutic effects on OSAS. The PTGS2 and estrogen receptor alpha (ESR1) hub genes were associated with OSAS. The pathway enrichment analysis focuses on the NF-κB, apoptosis, and HIF-1A pathways. In response to CIH, pterostilbene and notopterol decreased IL-6, TNF-α, and PGE2 levels. The NF-κB pathway was activated by an increase in PTGS2 levels. Pterostilbene promoted proteasome-mediated ubiquitination of PTGS2 protein and reduced PTGS2 levels, inhibiting the NF-κB pathway. Conclusion: This study reveals the active metabolites of Notopterygium incisum and hub genes involved in treating OSAS, which provide a basis for the follow-up development and exploitation of the botanical drug.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) has been associated with cardiovascular disease and its complications, the progression of diabetic nephropathy, and complement-mediated renal interstitial injury. However, the relationship between plasma MBL concentration with both heart failure and renal function is unclear. In this study, we examined associations of plasma MBL with both renal function and heart failure in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: We enrolled 348 consecutive stable CAD patients and used ELISA to evaluate plasma concentrations of MBL. Renal function was classified into KDIGO G1, G2 and G3a-G4 groups according to the eGFR of ≥ 90, 60-89 and 15-59, ml/min/1.73 m2, respectively. Patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤ 40 % were classified to have heart failure. RESULTS: A significant positive association was found between MBL with diabetes mellitus, current smoker, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and brain natriuretic peptide, and a significant negative association was found between MBL with eGFR and LVEF. KDIGO stage G3a-G4 and heart failure increased along with tertiles of MBL (p for trend < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that compared to the patients with a low MBL concentration, the odds ratios of having KDIGO stage G3a-G4 were 1.89 (1.01-3.55) times and 2.37 (1.25-4.59) times higher for those with medium and high MBL concentrations. Furthermore, compared to the patients with a low MBL concentration, the OR of having heart failure were 1.97 (1.01-3.93) times higher for those with high MBL concentrations. Moreover, multivariate analysis showed an independent association between plasma MBL concentration with both KDIGO stage G3a-G4 and heart failure (LVEF < 40 %). In addition, the effect of MBL on both LVEF and eGFR was confirmed by structural equation model analysis. CONCLUSION: There are associations between circulating MBL concentration with both heart failure and renal function in stable CAD patients, suggesting that increased plasma MBL may contribute to the pathogenesis of both chronic kidney disease and heart failure.

RESUMO

Solar-blind UV photodetectors have outstanding reliability and sensitivity in flame detection without interference from other signals and response quickly. Herein, we fabricated a solar-blind UV photodetector based on a La2O3/ε-Ga2O3 p-n heterojunction with a typical type-II band alignment. Benefiting from the photovoltaic effect formed by the space charge region across the junction interface, the photodetector exhibited a self-powered photocurrent of 1.4 nA at zero bias. Besides, this photodetector demonstrated excellent photo-to-dark current ratio of 2.68 × 104 under 254 nm UV light illumination and at a bias of 5 V, and a high specific detectivity of 2.31 × 1011 Jones and large responsivity of 1.67 mA/W were achieved. Importantly, the La2O3/ε-Ga2O3 heterojunction photodetector can rapidly respond to flames in milliseconds without any applied biases. Based on the performances described above, this novel La2O3/ε-Ga2O3 heterojunction is expected to be a candidate for future energy-efficient fire detection.

RESUMO

Background: Ficolin-3 (FCN3) is a well-known circulating pattern recognition molecule which plays a role in host immune responses to cancer via activation of the lectin complement pathway. Nevertheless, the clinical significance of FCN3 in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unclear. Methods: Eighty-seven HCC patients who received hepatectomy at our hospital were included. Immunohistochemical staining was used to assess the FCN3 expression in both tumorous and non-tumorous tissues from the patients, who were classified into high and low expression groups. Differences in clinicopathological characteristics between the two groups were then analyzed. Results: Survival was significantly associated with FCN3 immunohistochemical score (p for trend = 0.048). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed a higher overall survival rate in the patients with a high FCN3 expression than in those with a low FCN3 expression (p=0.031). A high FCN3 expression in tumor tissue was independently associated with better overall survival (p=0.042). However, multivariate analysis showed that FCN3 expression was not an independent risk factor for overall survival. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that FCN3 is significantly related to the prognosis of HCC. FCN3 may be a prognostic marker in patients with HCC.

RESUMO

Introduction: The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD-related deaths in patients with schizophrenia is high. An elevated risk of CVD has been associated with low heart rate variability (HRV). There is increasing evidence that fatty acid-binding protein (FABP)3 and FABP4 play roles in the development and progression of CVD. This study aimed to explore the association of circulating FABP3/FABP4 levels with HRV in patients with chronic schizophrenia. Methods: We included 265 consecutive patients with chronic schizophrenia who attended a disease management program. We used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the measurement of plasma concentrations of FABP3 and FABP4. Standard HRV was recorded at baseline following a standard protocol. Mean high- and low-frequency (HF/LF) HRV values were analyzed by tertile of FABP3 and FABP4 using one-way analysis of variance, and linear regression analysis was performed to assess trends. Results: A positive association between FABP3 and creatinine was found in multiple regression analysis. In addition, negative associations between levels of hematocrit, hemoglobin, HF HRV, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with FABP3 were also found. Moreover, positive associations between FABP4 with body mass index, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, systolic blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine, and FABP3 were found. Furthermore, negative associations between levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, eGFR, and HF HRV with FABP4 were found. We also found a significant inverse association between FABP3 and HF HRV (p for trend = 0.008), and significant inverse associations between FABP4 with HF and LF HRV (p for trend = 0.007 and 0.017, respectively). Discussion: Together, this suggests that elevated levels of FABP3 and FABP4 may be linked to health problems related to CVD in patients with chronic schizophrenia.
