RESUMO

In the Anthropocene, there is a strong interlinkage among water, energy, and the environment. The water-energy-environment nexus (WEEN) has been vigorously advocated as an emerging development paradigm and a global research agenda. Based on the nexus concept, a framework for the WEEN complex system simulation and risk assessment is developed. The three metropolitan areas of the city cluster along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (CCMRYR) are taken as the objects. Regional policies are combined with generic shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs) to form a localized SSPs suitable for the research region. The dynamic simulation of the WEEN complex system and the risk analysis are carried out with the combination of system dynamics models and copula functions. Results show that: There are obvious differences in water utilization, energy consumption, air pollutant emissions, and water pollutant emissions among the three metropolitan areas. The issue of high carbon intensity in the Wuhan Metropolitan Coordinating Region needs to be emphasized and solved from the perspective of optimizing the industrial structure. Adhering to current development patterns, there will be successive peaks in water utilization, energy consumption, and carbon emissions in Wuhan, Dongting Lake, and Poyang Lake Metropolitan Coordinating Region by 2030, leading to high synergy risks at the systemic level, with maximum values of 0.84, 0.85, 0.62, respectively. A development path based on conservation priorities indicates that future policymaking needs to prioritize a resource-saving and pollution-control development pattern directed by technological upgrading against the backdrop of scarce natural resource endowments. The localized SSPs are a beneficial extension that enriches the narrative of regional-scale SSPs. The evolutionary trajectories and risk assessments of WEEN complex systems under different localized SSPs provide a sweeping insight into the consequences of policy decisions, thus enabling policymakers to appraise policy rationality and implement appropriate corrective measures.

RESUMO

The widespread used organoarsenicals have drawn attention for decades due to their potential environment risks. In this study, a heterogeneous system of goethite/oxalate irradiated using UVA light (λ = 365 nm) was applied for the removal of ASA, a kind of organoarsenicals used in animal feeding operations as additives, from the aqueous phase through photodegradation. Results showed that the presence of 5 mM of oxalate significantly enhanced the photodegradation efficiency of ASA in the 0.1 g/L of goethite suspended system from 28 to ~100% within 180 min reaction at pH 5. Acid conditions favored the photoreaction rate, compared with neutral and basic conditions. This reaction process was also influenced by the initial concentration of oxalate and ASA. Furthermore, the mechanism study was conducted by quenching experiments and revealed the important roles of ·OH in the degradation of ASA in the goethite/oxalate/UVA system. By analyzing the reaction products, both inorganic arsenic (As(III) and As(V)) and ammonia were detected during the photodegradation of ASA. These findings help to gain a better understanding of the geochemical behavior of ASA in surface water and can also provide a potential treatment method for the organoarsenicals contaminated water.

RESUMO

The adsorption of antibiotics on minerals is an important process in their environment behavior. The adsorption behavior of antibiotics on iron-containing minerals and the effect of co-existing cations and anions were studied in this work. Magnetite, hematite, goethite and kaolin were selected as the representative minerals and characterized by SEM, XRD and BET. A total of eight antibiotics, including three quinolones, three sulfonamides and two mycins were chosen as the research targets. Results showed a higher adsorption amount of quinolones than that of sulfonamides and mycins on the surface of iron-containing minerals in most mineral systems. The adsorption isotherms of quinolones can be well fitted using the Freundlich models. The effects of five cations and five anions on the adsorption of quinolones were investigated, among which Mg2+, Ca2+, HCO3- and H2PO4- mainly showed significant inhibition on the adsorption, while the effects of K+, Na+, NH4+, Cl-, NO3- and SO42- showed less. Natural surface water samples were also collected and used as media to investigate the adsorption behavior of quinolones on iron-containing minerals. The buffering capacity of the natural water kept the reaction solution at circumneutral conditions, and the adsorption amount was mostly promoted in the goethite system (from 0.56~0.78 µmol/g to 0.52~1.43 µmol/g), but was inhibited in the other systems (magnetite: from 1.13~1.33 µmol/g to 0.45~0.76 µmol/g; hematite: from 0.52~0.65 µmol/g to 0.02~0.18 µmol/g; kaolin: from 1.98~1.99 µmol/g to 0.90~1.40 µmol/g). The results in this work help to further understand the transportation and fate of antibiotics in an aqueous environment.

RESUMO

Urbanization and human activities have significantly modified the geochemical signatures of urban streams worldwide. However, the geochemical characteristics of urban streams in Wuhan, one of the core cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt in China, remain largely unstudied. Here, we examined the stable isotopes and geochemistry of urban streams at 73 locations in the central districts in Wuhan during May 2019. Maps of isotopic signatures reflected a non-free-flowing state in part of the urban stream system in Wuhan. A lower DO and a higher EC level were found in urban streams relative to the adjacent Yangtze River. The Na+, K+, and Cl- concentrations in urban streams were > 3.0 times as high as those in the Yangtze River, and there was a slight increasing trend between 1.1 and 1.4 times for other major ions. The mildly elevated Fe concentration (1.3 times) and markedly elevated Mn concentration (> 5.0 times) were observed in urban streams. Spearman's correlation analysis indicated strong positive bivariate correlations among Na+, K+, and Cl- in urban streams, and an urban geochemical principal component was identified by principal component analysis. Plotting Na/(Na + Ca) versus total dissolved solids (TDS) indicated a potential risk of "urban stream syndrome." These findings can enhance the knowledge of anthropogenic impacts on current urban stream water quality and provide reference for the restoration and improvement of water ecology functions of the urban stream system in Wuhan.
