RESUMO

Dietary amino acids shift hydrogen metabolism to an alternative hydrogen sink consisting of dissolved hydrogen sulfur (dH2S) rather than methanogenesis; and influences the fermentation metabolome and microbiome associated with particles and liquid fractions in gut regions (foregut, small intestine, and hindgut) of goats. A completely randomized block design with a total of 20 goats (5 goats per treatment) was used to conduct the trial. The goats were fed on a diet that consisted of a concentrated mixture with maize stover roughage (50:50, on a dry matter basis) and randomly assigned to one of the four treatments: without amino acid supplementation (a basal diet), a basal diet supplemented with methionine (Met), a basal diet supplemented with lysine (Lys), and a basal diet supplemented with methionine and lysine (ML). Goats fed Met alone or in combination had less acetate, acetate to propionate ratio, and greater propionate (p < 0.05) in the foregut and hindgut than those fed control or Lys. Nonetheless, the goats fed on the amino acid supplements had higher levels of branched-chain VFA (p < 0.05) in the foregut and hindgut than the control goats. Goats fed on ML had the highest ammonia (p < 0.01), followed by Met or Lys, both in the foregut and hindgut, compared with the control. Those fed on Met alone or in combination, had lower dH2, dCH4 (p < 0.01), and higher dH2S (p < 0.01) in the foregut and hindgut than the control or Lys. The goats that were fed on Met alone or in combination, had higher 16S rRNA gene copies of total bacteria, methanogens, and 18S rRNA gene copies of protozoa, fungi, and fiber-utilizing bacterial species (p < 0.01) associated with particles vs. liquid, both in the foregut and hindgut than the control goats. This study gives insights into the use of sulfur-containing amino acids, as an alternative dietary mitigation strategy of methanogenesis in ruminants and highlights the need for further research in this direction.

This study examined the effects of a high-dose Saccharomyces cerevisiae inoculant alone or jointly with Lactobacillus plantarum on nutrient preservation, fermentation quality, and aerobic stability of sweet corn stalk silage. Fresh stalks (231 g dry matter (DM)/kg) were chopped and subjected to the following treatments: (1) deionized water (Uninoculated; U); (2) S. cerevisiae at 1 × 108 cfu/g of fresh forage (S); and (3) S. cerevisiae at 1 × 108 cfu/g plus L. plantarum at 1 × 105 cfu/g (SL). Treated stalks were ensiled in 5-litre laboratory silos for 30, 60, and 90 d. The S and SL silages had a greater (p < 0.001) pH and greater crude protein, ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, and ethanol contents at all three ensiling periods than the U silage. Acetate, propionate and volatile fatty acids in the S and SL silages after 30 and 90 d of ensiling were greater (p < 0.05) than those in the U silage, but they were lower (p < 0.05) in the S and SL silages than in the U silage after 60 d. The lactate and V-score of the S and SL silages were lower (p < 0.001) than those of the U silage at all three ensiling periods. Compared with the U group, the aerobic stability of the S silage after 90 d of ensiling decreased (p < 0.05), and the aerobic stability of the SL silage was unaffected (p > 0.05). Overall, the quality of sweet corn stalk silage was not improved by inoculation with 108 cfu/g of S. cerevisiae alone or in combination with 1 × 105 cfu/g of L. plantarum.

A study was conducted to assess the effect of genetic and non-genetic factors (litter size, sex of lamb, and parity of dam) on pre-weaning growth performance of crossbred lambs (75% Dorper (DR) 25% indigenous lambs; and 50% Dorper 50% indigenous lambs) under semi-intensive husbandry practices in eastern Ethiopia. Data from a total of 275 Dorper sire breed × indigenous (Blackhead Ogaden [BHO] and Hararghe Highland [HH]) crossbred lambs with different genetic group of the parental breeds were collected for three consecutive years (2009 to 2011). Pre-weaning growth performance attributes of crossbred lambs studied were birth weight, weaning weight, and pre-weaning average daily gain. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure of SAS (2003). Breed group and non-genetic factors significantly affected pre-weaning growth performance. Lambs with 75% Dorper and 25% indigenous had higher (P < 0.01) birth weight than 50% DR and 50% HH but similar to 50% DR and 50% BHO. Weaning weight and pre-weaning live weight gain were higher (P < 0.01) for ¾DR»BHO and ¾DR»HH than 50% Dorper inheritance. Single-born lambs had higher weight at birth, weaning weight, and pre-weaning average daily gain as compared to twins. Sex comparison is significant (P < 0.05) and male lambs recorded highest pre-weaning growth performance compared to female counterparts. Parity, season, and lambing year significantly (P < 0.01) influenced the pre-weaning growth of crossbred lambs. Therefore, it could be concluded that 50-75% Dorper inheritance improved pre-weaning growth performance of indigenous breeds of Hararghe Highland and Blackhead Ogaden sheep. The result also suggested culling of ewes older than fourth parity to improve the pre-weaning growth performance of lambs.
