RESUMO

Magnetism induced by defects in nominally non-magnetic solids has attracted intense scientific interest in recent years. The local magnetism in highly disordered undoped and Co-doped topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3nanoplates has been investigated by muon spin relaxation (µSR). UsingµSR spectroscopy, together with other macroscopic characterizations, we find that these nanoplates are composed of a core with both static fields and dynamically fluctuating moments, and a shell with purely dynamically fluctuating moments. The fluctuations in the core die out at low temperatures, while those in the shell continue till 2 K. When Bi2Se3is doped with Co, the static magnetic component increases, whilst keeping the dual (static-plus-dynamic) nature intact. The findings indicate that highly disordered TI's could constitute a new class of promising magnetic materials that can be engineered by magnetic impurity doping.

RESUMO

This work addresses the use of the Gaussian approximation as a common tool to extract atomic motions in proteins from elastic incoherent neutron scattering and whether improvements in data analysis and additional information can be obtained when going beyond that. We measured alpha-lactalbumin with different levels of hydration on three neutron backscattering spectrometers, to be able to resolve a wide temporal and spatial range for dynamics. We demonstrate that the Gaussian approximation gives qualitatively similar results to models that include heterogeneity, if one respects a certain procedure to treat the intercept of the elastic intensities with the momentum transfer axis. However, the inclusion of motional heterogeneity provides better fits to the data. Our analysis suggests an approach of limited heterogeneity, where including only two kinds of motions appears sufficient to obtain more quantitative results for the mean square displacement. Finally, we note that traditional backscattering spectrometers pose a limit on the lowest accessible momentum transfer. We therefore suggest that complementary information about the spatial evolution of the elastic intensity close to zero momentum transfer can be obtained using other neutron methods, in particular, neutron spin-echo together with polarization analysis.

RESUMO

A method is proposed for the monitoring of metal recrystallization using neutron diffraction that is based on the measurement of stored energy. Experiments were performed using deformed metal specimens heated in-situ while mounted at the sample position of the High Resolution Powder Diffractometer, HRPD (ISIS Facility), UK. Monitoring the breadth of the resulting Bragg lines during heating not only allows the time-dependence (or temperature-dependence) of the stored energy to be determined but also the recrystallized fraction. The analysis method presented here was developed using pure nickel (Ni270) specimens with different deformation levels from 0.29 to 0.94. In situ temperature ramping as well as isothermal annealing was undertaken. The method developed in this work allows accurate and quantitative monitoring of the recrystallization process. The results from neutron diffraction are satisfactorily compared to data obtained from calorimetry and hardness measurements.

RESUMO

The vanadium oxyfluoride [NH(4)](2)[C(7)H(14)N][V(7)O(6)F(18)] (DQVOF) is a geometrically frustrated magnetic bilayer material. The structure consists of S = 1/2 kagome planes of V(4+) d(1) ions with S = 1 V(3+) d(2) ions located between the kagome layers. Muon spin relaxation measurements demonstrate the absence of spin freezing down to 40 mK despite an energy scale of 60 K for antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. From magnetization and heat capacity measurements we conclude that the S = 1 spins of the interplane V(3+) ions are weakly coupled to the kagome layers, such that DQVOF can be viewed as an experimental model for S = 1/2 kagome physics, and that it displays a gapless spin liquid ground state.

RESUMO

The present work aims to characterize the dynamical behavior of proteins immersed in bio-preserving liquids and glasses. For this purpose, the protein dUTPase was chosen, while the selected solvents were glycerol, a triol, and some homologous disaccharides, i.e., trehalose, maltose, and sucrose, which are known to be very effective bio-preserving agents. The results highlight that the disaccharides show a slowing down effect on the water dynamics, which is stronger for trehalose than in the case of the other disaccharides. Furthermore, a characterization of the medium which hosts the protein is performed by using an operative definition of fragility based on the mean square displacement extracted by elastic incoherent neutron scattering, which is directly connected to Angell's kinetic fragility based on the viscosity. Finally, a study of the dynamics of the protein sequestered within the solvents is performed. The result shows that the protein dynamics is coupled with that of the surrounding matrix.

RESUMO

Extensive studies on polymer thin films to date have revealed their interesting but unusual properties such as film thickness dependence of glass transition temperature Tg and thermal expansivity. Recent studies have shown that the lower Tg is not always related to the higher mobility in polymer thin films, which contradicts our current understanding of the glass transition process. In this work, we report the results of inelastic neutron-scattering measurements on polystyrene thin films using two spectrometers with different energy resolutions as well as ellipsometry measurements. The results are interpreted in terms of cooperatively rearranging region and motional slowing down due to the surface effect that explain plausibly the anomalous relationship between the glass transition temperature Tg and the molecular mobility in thin films.

RESUMO

Neutron scattering data on lysozyme-trehalose and lysozyme-sucrose aqueous mixtures, and on trehalose and sucrose aqueous mixtures are presented for a wide temperature range. Although the degree of protein coupling to solvent seems to be an open question in the literature, we present evidence that seems to be a firm link between a local dynamics of the protein with that of the glassy host. One of the objectives of this study was to explore the relationship between protein dynamics and glassy host. Measuring the of lysozyme mixtures, we arrive at a qualitative description of how their thermal stability is affected by the presence of two sugars at different temperatures. Whereas the Q dependence of the elastic incoherent structure factor gives information about the geometry and the amplitudes of the motions.

RESUMO

This work presents quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and neutron spin echo (NSE) findings on homologous disaccharide (i.e. trehalose, maltose and sucrose)/water solutions as a function of temperature. The dynamical properties of these systems are investigated by QENS, which, on the picosecond scale, allows for the characterisation of the diffusion of both solutes and solvent. On the other hand, NSE investigates the dynamics on the nanosecond scale, allowing for the relaxation times of the disaccharide/water systems to be evaluated. The experimental data highlight a strong slowing down of water in the presence of disaccharides. The whole set of findings indicates, therefore, a noticeable disaccharide-water interaction, which is more intense in the case of trehalose. This feature can justify its higher bioprotective effectiveness.

RESUMO

We have used low energy inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy to examine the tunnelling spectroscopy of the ammonium ion in the (NH4)0.02Rb(x)K(0.98-x)I system. The concentration of different species were varied as x increased, this was followed systematically and the first consistent assignment scheme for these features is given. Differences were also found for the relaxation rate of the spin temperature inversions that could be generated in these species. At a critical concentration--about x = 0.04 mole fraction--the relaxation rates of the species changed dramatically.

RESUMO

High resolution neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal of SrCu(2-x)Mgx(BO3)2 with x approximately 0.05 reveal the presence of new spin excitations within the gap of this quasi-two-dimensional, singlet ground state system. The application of a magnetic field induces Zeeman-split states associated with S=1/2 unpaired spins which are antiferromagnetically correlated with the bulk singlet. Substantial broadening of both the one- and two-triplet excitations in the doped single crystal is observed, as compared with pure SrCu2(BO3)2. Theoretical calculations using a variational algorithm and a single quenched magnetic vacancy on an infinite lattice are shown to qualitatively account for these effects.
