RESUMO

Metal-halide perovskites are recognized as cutting-edge solar energy technology, boasting remarkable absorption capabilities, minimal environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. This study delves into the structural stability, mechanical stability, and optoelectronic properties of lead-free halide perovskites, specifically XMgI3 (X = Li/Na), by utilizing the CASTEP and WIEN2k software along with the GGA-PBE and Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ) exchange-correlation functions to compare their electronic properties. The structural and mechanical stabilities were confirmed by assessing their tolerance factor and formation energy and by evaluating their elastic constants, respectively. Using the TB-mBJ exchange-correlation potential function, the calculated indirect band gap values for LiMgI3 and NaMgI3 were 2.474 and 2.556 eV, respectively. These band gaps are suitable for solar energy harvesting due to their broad optical absorption ranging from infrared to visible light. The partial density of states and the total density of states were determined to investigate the contribution of individual atoms. Consequently, this study can guide researchers focusing on the experimental synthesis of these materials at the laboratory scale for in-depth exploration, particularly in applications such as photovoltaics and various optoelectronic devices.

Background: Diarrhea is the common gastrointestinal disorder accounting for 2.5 billion episodes and 1.5 million deaths annually. Limitations and inaccessibility of currently available medications are the main problem associated with treatment of diarrhea. Hence, medicinal plants are usually preferred to manage diarrhea because they may contain constituents with high activity and fewer side effects. Even though the dose, safety, and efficacy of Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott are not substantiated scientifically, several societies use it for the treatment of diarrhea. Objective: This study was targeted at exploring the in vivo antidiarrheal activities of 80% methanol extract and solvent fractions of peels of Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott in Swiss albino mice. Methods: The plant was collected and extracted with 80% methanol, followed by fractionation with distilled water, chloroform, and diethyl ether. Castor oil-induced diarrhea, enteropooling, and motility tests were used to evaluate antidiarrheal activity. The test groups received graded doses of 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg. Negative controls received 10 ml/kg of 2% Tween 80 while positive controls received loperamide (3 mg/kg) or atropine (5 mg/kg). Results: The crude and solvent fractions of the plant extract have induced significant effects in reduction of the number and weight of wet stools at all tested doses. However, delay in onset of diarrhea was observed only at 400 mg/kg (P < 0.001) for both crude extract and solvent fractions. In antienteropooling test, 80% methanol extract and solvent fractions have significantly reduced the weight and volume of intestinal contents, especially at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg. Regarding the antimotility test, the crude extract reduced motility at all tested doses, whereas the solvent fractions reduced intestinal motility mainly at 400 mg/kg (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The study has revealed that the 80% methanol extract and solvent fractions of the plant possess antidiarrheal activities supporting the traditional antidiarrheal claims of the plant.

Metal halide perovskites are crystalline materials with a sharp increase in popularity and rapidly becoming a major contender for optoelectronic device applications. In this work, we provide the optoelectronic features of a possible novel candidate, ZSnCl3 (Z = Na/K) Sn-based on a detailed numerical simulation. The output of the current computations is compared to the results that are currently available, and a respectable agreement is noted. The studied compounds were cubic in nature and structurally stabe. The mechanical properties reflect the mechanical stability and ductility of the proposed materials. The Sn-based single perovskite compounds proposed in this study are mechanically stable and ductile. The narrow direct band gap for NaSnCl3 and KSnCl3 are 1.36 eV and 1.47 eV, respectively, using the HSE06 hybrid function with the Boltztrp2 integrated in Quantum ESPRESSO (QE) software. The effective use of these compounds in perovskite solar cells and other optoelectronic applications was confirmed by optical absorption spectral measurements conducted in the photon energy range of 0-20 eV.

In this study, the density functional theory (DFT) was employed to study the structural, electronic, optical, and thermoelectric characteristics of half-Heusler (HH) FeTaX (X = P or As). Optimization of the structures was achieved using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) parametrized generalized gradient approximation (GGA). These HH FeTaX (X = P, As) showed indirect bandgaps of 0.882 eV and 0.748 eV, respectively. The predicted density of states (DOS) spectra suggest that Fe-d and Ta-d states contribute predominantly to both valence and conduction bands, whereas P/As-p states contribute less. Optical properties were investigated to assess their potential in optoelectronic applications. The estimated values of various optical parameters and low loss suggest that the studied HH FeTaX (X = P, As) are suitable for optoelectronic device applications. The thermoelectric responses of the studied HH FeTaX (X = P, As) were computed, and their highest power factors at high temperature reflects their usage in thermoelectric devices.

Membrane technology is an essential tool for water treatment and biomedical applications. Despite their extensive use in these fields, polymeric-based membranes still face several challenges, including instability, low mechanical strength, and propensity to fouling. The latter point has attracted the attention of numerous teams worldwide developing antifouling materials for membranes and interfaces. A convenient method to prepare antifouling membranes is via physical blending (or simply blending), which is a one-step method that consists of mixing the main matrix polymer and the antifouling material prior to casting and film formation by a phase inversion process. This review focuses on the recent development (past 10 years) of antifouling membranes via this method and uses different phase-inversion processes including liquid-induced phase separation, vapor induced phase separation, and thermally induced phase separation. Antifouling materials used in these recent studies including polymers, metals, ceramics, and carbon-based and porous nanomaterials are also surveyed. Furthermore, the assessment of antifouling properties and performances are extensively summarized. Finally, we conclude this review with a list of technical and scientific challenges that still need to be overcome to improve the functional properties and widen the range of applications of antifouling membranes prepared by blending modification.

Background: Adding ketamine to local anesthetics used for caudal block in children is an emerging clinical practice. This review aims to resolve controversies related to this adjuvant for a caudal block in children who underwent sub-umbilical surgeries. Methods: Between January 2010 and November 2021, PubMed, Cochrane Review, and Google Scholar were searched for a caudal block with ketamine added local anesthetics for children. After screening for eligibility and removing duplicates, 38,187 articles were found, 13 reviewed. Discussion: Despite adding ketamine to local anesthetics used for a caudal block, it is a recent technique practiced worldwide. Ketamine showed equi-efficacious as other adjuvants used for the caudal block to control postoperative pain in children. Conclusion: Ketamine with a 0.5 mg/kg dose is safe and effective to manage postoperative children's pain when used as an adjuvant to local anesthetics used for caudal block.

OBJECTIVE: A crosssectional study was conducted between September 2015 and August 2016 in the district of Afar Regional State, Northeastern Ethiopia, to characterize the most prevalent bacterial pathogens and identify the associated risk factors of camel subclinical mastitis. California mastitis test (CMT) was used as a screening test, and standard bacteriological methods were carried out for isolation and identification of the pathogens. RESULTS: Among the total 96 lactating camels examined, 25 were found positive with the overall prevalence of 26%, with 25% and 1% subclinical and clinical mastitis cases, respectively. Totally, 384 quarters of udder were examined; of these, 10 of them were blind while the rest 374 were nonblind teats. The quarter level prevalence of subclinical mastitis was 8.9%. The analysis showed that statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) of tick infestation and subclinical mastitis. Additionally, among the bacteriologically tested 34 CMT positive milk samples, all of them showed growth on nutrient and blood agar plate. Out of these culture isolates, the major bacterial pathogens identified were Staphylococcus aureus (8.7%), Staphylococcus hyicus (6.52%), Staphylococcus intermedius (6.52), Coagulase-negative staphylococci (19.57%), Bacillus (19.57%), Escherichia coli (6.52%), and Pasteurella multocida (6.52%) species. Therefore, appropriate control measures and awareness creation to the community should be practiced.

Brucellosis is an infectious and widespread zoonotic disease caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella and can induce considerable human suffering and huge economic losses in animals. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis in Ethiopia. PubMed, Science Direct, African Journals Online, and Google Scholar were used to search the articles. All references were screened and articles, which reported seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis in Ethiopia were included in the study. Meta-analysis using random-effects models was made to calculate the pooled seroprevalence of brucellosis. This review included 15 papers. The estimated pooled seroprevalence of brucellosis was found to be 3.0% (95% CI: 2.0, 4.0). The subgroup analysis showed that there was a statistically significant association between the disease and geographical location, setting, laboratory technique employed and study years. Also, there was some evidence of publication bias (Egger's test, p = 0.0003) on studies reporting the prevalence of brucellosis in Ethiopia. This review proves a high seroprevalence of brucellosis in the country and appropriate control strategies are recommended. Moreover, further study on the risk factors is also required to develop cost-effective preventive strategies.
