RESUMO

The delafossites are a class of layered metal oxides that are notable for being able to exhibit optical transparency alongside an in-plane electrical conductivity, making them promising platforms for the development of transparent conductive oxides. Pressure-induced polymorphism offers a direct method for altering the electrical and optical properties in this class, and although the copper delafossites have been studied extensively under pressure, the silver delafossites remain only partially studied. We report two new high-pressure polymorphs of silver ferrite delafossite, AgFeO2, that are stabilized above ∼6 and ∼14 GPa. In situ X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy measurements are used to examine the structural changes across the two phase transitions. The high-pressure structure between 6 and 14 GPa is assigned as a monoclinic C2/c structure that is analogous to the high-pressure phase reported for AgGaO2. Nuclear resonant forward scattering reveals no change in the spin state or valence state at the Fe3+ site up to 15.3(5) GPa.

RESUMO

Transition metal carbides find widespread use throughout industry due to their high strength and resilience under extreme conditions. However, they remain largely limited to compounds formed from the early d-block elements, since the mid-to-late transition metals do not form thermodynamically stable carbides. We report here the high-pressure bulk synthesis of large single crystals of a novel metastable manganese carbide compound,MnCxP63/mmc, which adopts the anti-NiAs-type structure with significant substoichiometry at the carbon sites. We demonstrate how synthesis pressure modulates the carbon loading, with~40% occupancy being achieved at 9.9 GPa.

RESUMO

Diagnosis and treatment of diabetes changed little from the Middle Ages through the early 19th century, when the first chemical test for the condition was developed. In the 20th century, advances in diabetes management gained momentum with home-use diagnostic devices and mass-produced insulin. In the 21st century, technological developments around diabetes are advancing so rapidly that a small, discrete system of medical devices that serve as an artificial pancreas are now possible. In this article, we assert that medical device interoperability and cyber security are necessary preconditions for safe, effective, and reliable widespread use of the artificial pancreas system.

RESUMO

Home healthcare is vital for a large percentage of the population. According to data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 7 million people in the United States receive home healthcare annually. The use of medical devices in the home and other nonclinical environments is increasing dramatically. By the year 2050, an estimated 27 million people will need continuing care in the home or in the community and not in a controlled clinical environment. 1 The FDA recently announced its Home Use Devices Initiative and issued the document, "Draft Guidance for Industry and FDA Staff-Design Considerations for Devices Intended for Home Use" on Dec. 12, 2012. 2 The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) regulates medical devices, but that regulatory authority alone is not enough to ensure safe and effective use of devices in the home. To address these and other issues, AAMI and FDA will co-host a summit on healthcare technology in nonclinical settings Oct. 9-10, 2013.
