AIMS: Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome-1 (TRPS1) has been proposed as a novel breast marker with equally high expression in breast cancer (BC) subtypes, making it a useful diagnostic tool. Here, its expression was evaluated alongside other commonly used markers [GATA3, GCDFP15, mammaglobin (MGB) and SOX10] in a large cohort of BCs (n = 1852) and their corresponding nodal metastases. Its usefulness as a diagnostic tool and its correlation with clinicopathological features were assessed. METHODS AND RESULTS: TRPS1 was expressed at 75.8% overall in the BC cohort, with at least 58% expression among BC subtypes. It was less sensitive than GATA3 for luminal and HER2-overexpressing (HER2-OE) cancers (luminal A: 82 versus 97%; luminal B: 80 versus 95%; HER2-OE: 62 versus 76%), but it was the most sensitive for TNBC (60 versus ≤ 41%). It showed a stable expression in nodal metastases (primary tumour 76 versus nodal metastasis 78%), unlike a reduced nodal expression for GATA3 (86 versus 77%). TRPS1 outperformed GATA3 in detecting non-luminal cancers when paired with other breast markers. TRPS1 and GCDFP15 was the most sensitive combination in TNBC detection, with a 76% detection rate. For TRPS1-negative and GCDFP15-negative TNBCs, SOX10 was more sensitive than GATA3 (29 versus 24%). CONCLUSIONS: TRPS1 is a highly sensitive marker for all breast cancer subtypes, outperforming GATA3 in non-luminal cancers and displaying the highest sensitivity for TNBC detection when combined with GCDFP15. It is a valuable addition to the breast marker panel for accurate identification of BC.

RESUMO

We describe the first implementation of a Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifier (JTWPA) in an axion dark matter search. The operation of the JTWPA for a period of about two weeks achieved sensitivity to axion-like particle dark matter with axion-photon couplings above 10-13 Ge V-1 over a narrow range of axion masses centered around 19.84 µeV by tuning the resonant frequency of the cavity over the frequency range of 4796.7-4799.5 MHz. The JTWPA was operated in the insert of the axion dark matter experiment as part of an independent receiver chain that was attached to a 0.56-l cavity. The ability of the JTWPA to deliver high gain over a wide (3 GHz) bandwidth has engendered interest from those aiming to perform broadband axion searches, a longstanding goal in this field.

We report the first result of a direct search for a cosmic axion background (CaB)-a relativistic background of axions that is not dark matter-performed with the axion haloscope, the Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX). Conventional haloscope analyses search for a signal with a narrow bandwidth, as predicted for dark matter, whereas the CaB will be broad. We introduce a novel analysis strategy, which searches for a CaB induced daily modulation in the power measured by the haloscope. Using this, we repurpose data collected to search for dark matter to set a limit on the axion photon coupling of a CaB originating from dark matter cascade decay via a mediator in the 800-995 MHz frequency range. We find that the present sensitivity is limited by fluctuations in the cavity readout as the instrument scans across dark matter masses. Nevertheless, we suggest that these challenges can be surmounted using superconducting qubits as single photon counters, and allow ADMX to operate as a telescope searching for axions emerging from the decay of dark matter. The daily modulation analysis technique we introduce can be deployed for various broadband rf signals, such as other forms of a CaB or even high-frequency gravitational waves.

Congenital luxation of the ulnar and radius is a rare orthopaedic condition in the dog. This case report describes a novel surgical treatment for congenital elbow luxation in a medium-breed dog. A 6-week-old Kelpie presented for left forelimb lameness and deformity. Radiographs and computed tomography (CT) confirmed the diagnosis of unilateral ulnar and radius luxation. The surgical repair involved open reduction followed by fixation with an extraarticular pin and a transarticular external fixator. The outcome of surgery was improved leg function and weight-bearing, however, reluxation of the radial head was diagnosed 7 weeks following surgery. This technique may offer an alternative surgical option to improve clinical signs, as well as insight into improving the management of this condition.

BACKGROUND: In Australia in 2017, 89% of 15-year-old females and 86% of 15-year-old males had received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine. However, considerable variation in HPV vaccination initiation (dose one) across schools remains. It is important to understand the school-level characteristics most strongly associated with low initiation and their contribution to the overall between-school variation. METHODS: A population-based ecological analysis was conducted using school-level data for 2016 on all adolescent students eligible for HPV vaccination in three Australian jurisdictions. We conducted logistic regression to determine school-level factors associated with lower HPV vaccination initiation (< 75% dose 1 uptake) and estimated the population attributable risk (PAR) and the proportion of schools with the factor (school-level prevalence). RESULTS: The factors most strongly associated with lower initiation, and their prevalence were; small schools (OR = 9.3, 95%CI = 6.1-14.1; 33% of schools), special education schools (OR = 5.6,95%CI = 3.7-8.5; 8% of schools), higher Indigenous enrolments (OR = 2.7,95% CI:1.9-3.7; 31% of schools), lower attendance rates (OR = 2.6,95%CI = 1.7-3.7; 35% of schools), remote location (OR = 2.6,95%CI = 1.6-4.3; 6% of schools,) and lower socioeconomic area (OR = 1.8,95% CI = 1.3-2.5; 33% of schools). The highest PARs were small schools (PAR = 79%, 95%CI:76-82), higher Indigenous enrolments (PAR = 38%, 95%CI: 31-44) and lower attendance rate (PAR = 37%, 95%CI: 29-46). CONCLUSION: This analysis suggests that initiatives to support schools that are smaller, with a higher proportion of Indigenous adolescents and lower attendance rates may contribute most to reducing the variation of HPV vaccination uptake observed at a school-level in these jurisdictions. Estimating population-level coverage at the school-level is useful to guide policy and prioritise resourcing to support school-based vaccination programs.

INTRODUCTION: The sesamoid disease is a cause of lameness in dogs, and there is limited literature relating to diagnosis, treatment and outcome of treatment in dogs with the sesamoid disease. Our aim was to compare the efficacy of intra-articular metacarpophalangeal/metatarsophalangeal joint injection with methylprednisolone and bupivacaine (IMPB) or conservative management with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and rest (CMNR) for treatment of this disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective survey of dogs treated for the sesamoid disease with IMPB or CMNR. The medical records of all dogs that received IMPB or were recommended CMNR for treatment of sesamoid pain were reviewed, and a client questionnaire was delivered to owners. Response to treatment, rapidity of response, length of resolution and recurrence of clinical signs associated with the sesamoid disease were assessed. RESULTS: A total of 78 dogs were included in the study. One week after IMPB, 52/58 (89.7%) dogs demonstrated resolution of lameness compared with 1 week of CMNR, 0/18 (P < 0.001). There was limited statistical evidence in client satisfaction between treatment groups, IMPB 36/53 (67.9%) and CMNR 16/17 (94%) (P = 0.052). Dogs presenting with the sesamoid disease had comorbidities in 51/78 (65.4%) of cases. Elbow disease was the most common comorbidity 29/78 (37.2%). CONCLUSION: Our results support the use of IMPB for short-term (1 week) resolution of lameness associated with sesamoid disease in dogs. Dogs treated with CMNR had slower improvement; however, there was no difference in lameness or client satisfaction between treatment groups at long-term follow-up (12 months).

BACKGROUND: Schools are the primary setting for the delivery of adolescent HPV vaccination in Australia. Although this strategy has achieved generally high vaccination coverage, gaps persist for reasons that are mostly unknown. This study sought to identify school-level correlates of low vaccination course initiation and completion in New South Wales, Tasmania, and Western Australia to inform initiatives to increase uptake. METHODS: Initiation was defined as the number of first doses given in a school in 2016 divided by vaccine-eligible student enrolments. Completion was the number of third doses given in a school in 2015-2016 divided by the number of first doses. Low initiation and completion were defined as coverage ≤ 25thpercentile of all reporting schools. We investigated correlations between covariates using Spearman's rank correlation coefficients. Due to multicollinearity, we used univariable logistic regression to investigate associations between school characteristics and low coverage. RESULTS: Median initiation was 84.7% (IQR: 75.0%-90.4%) across 1,286 schools and median completion was 93.8% (IQR: 86.0%-97.3%) across 1,295 schools. There were strong correlations between a number of school characteristics, particularly higher Indigenous student enrolments and lower attendance, increasing remoteness, higher postcode socioeconomic disadvantage, and smaller school size. Characteristics most strongly associated with low initiation in univariate analyses were small school size, location in Tasmania, and schools catering for special educational needs. Low completion was most strongly associated with schools in Tasmania and Western Australia, remote location, small size, high proportion of Indigenous student enrolments, and low attendance rates. CONCLUSION: This study provides indicative evidence that characteristics of schools and school populations are associated with the likelihood of low initiation and completion of the HPV vaccination course. The findings will guide further research and help target initiatives to improve vaccination uptake in schools with profiles associated with lower coverage.

Surgical management of chondrosarcoma with hemipelvectomy is well described, but there have been no reports on extensive excision involving bilateral pubis and unilateral ischium. This report describes a novel pelvectomy technique for the treatment of chondrosarcoma in a large-breed dog. A 12-year-old Labrador Retriever presented for tenesmus due to a large, intra-pelvic mass which was confirmed on computed tomography (CT). Surgery involved removal of the entire left ischium and both pubic bones with preservation of both hind limbs. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a high-grade chondrosarcoma with tumour-free margins of less than 3 mm. The dog recovered well following surgery and regained ambulation within 9 days. Four months postoperatively, the dog had no ongoing pain or tenesmus and only a mild gait abnormality in the left hind limb. Pelvectomy involving the entire pubis and unilateral ischium was well tolerated in a large-breed dog. This technique may offer a novel surgical option to treat neoplasia previously considered too extensive for complete excision.

BACKGROUND: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer is associated with adverse effects, such as obesity and metabolic syndrome, which increase cardiovascular risk, the most common cause of non-cancer mortality in men diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Comprehensive Lifestyle Improvement Program for Prostate Cancer (CLIPP) was created to determine the feasibility of conducing a comprehensive lifestyle modification intervention in men on ADT for prostate cancer and determine its early efficacy in reducing obesity and metabolic syndrome. METHODS: A single-arm, open-label clinical trial was conducted by recruiting 31 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and exposed to ADT within the last 5 years. A multicomponent lifestyle modification program was delivered weekly for 16 weeks by a trained health coach. This was followed by 8 weeks of passive follow-up resulting in a total trial duration of 24 weeks. Feasibility was determined by calculating study recruitment, retention, and adherence rates. Weight and components of metabolic syndrome (waist circumference, triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), serum glucose, and blood pressure (BP)) were measured at baseline, 12, and 24 weeks. RESULTS: Recruitment, retention, and adherence rates were 47.1%, 90.3%, and 100%, respectively. Statistically significant improvements were noted between baseline and end of study measurements for weight (206.3 vs. 191.3 lbs, p < 0.001), waist (41.3 vs. 38.8 inches, p < 0.001), systolic BP (144.1 vs. 133.4 mm of Hg, p = 0.014), diastolic BP (83.3 vs. 76.2 mm of Hg, p = 0.0056), TG (146.0 vs. 113.8 mg/dl, p = 0.022), HDL (51.1 vs. 55.0 mg/dl, p = 0.012), and serum glucose (114.0 vs. 103.2 mg/dl, p = 0.013). CONCLUSION: CLIPP demonstrates feasibility and early efficacy of a multicomponent lifestyle modification intervention toward addressing obesity as well as components of metabolic syndrome in men on ADT for prostate cancer. This study provides strong preliminary data to develop future clinical trials in this population.

BACKGROUND: Although androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer demonstrates improved overall and disease-free survival, it is associated with adverse effects such as obesity and metabolic syndrome that increase risk of cardiometabolic disease and diabetes type 2. ADT also leads to fatigue, depression and erectile dysfunction, which reduce quality of life (QoL). Lifestyle modification has shown promise in reducing obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes type 2 in other disease types. However, there is a paucity of data regarding the utility of lifestyle modification in men receiving ADT for prostate cancer. METHODS: The primary aim of the Comprehensive Lifestyle Improvement Program for Prostate Cancer-2 (CLIPP2) is to test the feasibility of conducting a 24-week lifestyle modification intervention in men on ADT for prostate cancer. Additionally, it will also determine the effect of this intervention on weight loss, cardiometabolic markers (secondary aim and markers of interest: serum glucose, insulin resistance, hemoglobin A1C and lipid panel), and QoL (tertiary aim). The intervention will be delivered weekly via telephone for the first 10 weeks and bi-weekly for the remaining 14 weeks. Questionnaires and serum samples will be collected at baseline, week 12, and week 24. Anthropometric measurements will be collected at baseline, week 6, week 12, week 18 and week 24. RESULTS: We hypothesize that the CLIPP2 intervention will produce a 7% weight loss that will result in improved markers associated with cardiometabolic disease and type 2 diabetes in the study population. CONCLUSION: Results will provide insight into the role of lifestyle modification in addressing ADT adverse effects as well as provide preliminary data to inform the development of future lifestyle interventions in this area. We report the results from a haloscope search for axion dark matter in the 3.3-4.2 µeV mass range. This search excludes the axion-photon coupling predicted by one of the benchmark models of "invisible" axion dark matter, the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov model. This sensitivity is achieved using a large-volume cavity, a superconducting magnet, an ultra low noise Josephson parametric amplifier, and sub-Kelvin temperatures. The validity of our detection procedure is ensured by injecting and detecting blind synthetic axion signals.

Introduction: The most common cancers in the UK are keratinocyte cancers (KCs): the combined term for basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCCs). Registration of KC is challenging due to high numbers and multiplicity of tumours per person. Methods: We provide an updated report on the descriptive epidemiology of trends in KC incidence for the resident populations of UK countries (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) using population-based cancer registry and pathology report data, 2013-18. Results: Substantial increases in cSCC incidence in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland can be detected for the period of 2013-18, and the incidence of cSCC also increased in Wales from 2016 to 2018. In contrast, however, the pattern of annual change in the incidence of BCC across the nations differs. In England, the incidence of BCC declined slightly from 2016 to 2018, however, the overall trend across 2013-18 is not statistically significant. In Scotland, the incidence of BCC shows some variability, declining in 2017 before increasing in 2018, and the overall trend across 2013-18 was also not statistically significant. In Northern Ireland, the incidence of BCC increased significantly over the study period, and in Wales, the incidence of BCC increased from 2016 to 2018. One in five people will develop non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) in their lifetime in England. This estimate is much higher than the lifetime risk of melanoma (1 in 36 males and 1 in 47 females born after 1960 in the UK), which further highlights the burden of the disease and importance of early prevention strategies. Conclusions: We highlight how common these tumours are by publishing the first ever lifetime incidence of NMSC. Additionally, the first time reporting of the age standardised incidence of KC in Wales further confirms the scale of the disease burden posed by these cancers in the UK. With approximately one in five people developing NMSC in their lifetime, optimisation of skin cancer prevention, management and research are essential.

Background: Cancer survivorship results in an increased number of physical and psychosocial health issues. Engaging in physical activity in natural environments is often thought of as restorative. Despite the potential benefits of engaging in physical activity in natural environments there are no sustainable community-based programs for cancer survivors that employ this form of physical activity. This study aims to evaluate the impact of an 8-week trail-walking (TW) program on anxiety in a population of adult cancer survivors. Methods: The TW program consisted of two trail walks per week for 8 weeks led by a hiking guide. Individuals were eligible to participate if they were 19 years or older, were a cancer survivor, were not on active immunotherapy, and had medical clearance from their physician for physical activity. While 12 participants signed up for the program, 9 participants (N = 9, 8 F, 1 M) completed the program. A mixed methodology included preand-post quantitative program surveys and post-program interviews. Questionnaires measured generalized anxiety, sleep disturbances, self-efficacy, self-esteem, psychological well-being and depression as well as pre-and-post hike state anxiety. Data was analysed using paired t-tests. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and an inductive thematic analysis was conducted to consolidate meaning and identify themes using NVivo 11 software. Results: Average attendance was 74% of the 16 hikes. There was no significant reduction in the primary outcome of generalized anxiety (p = .38). There was a significant reduction in perceived stress after 8-weeks (p = .03) and a significant reduction in state anxiety after TW (p < .001). None of the other secondary outcomes were statistically significant (p > .05). Four overarching themes, or benefits, emerged from qualitative data analysis: (a) benefits of program design (b) physical benefits, (c) psychological benefits, and (d) social benefits. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the utility of a TW program for cancer survivors in order to promote physical, psychological and social health. Feasibility of a TW program would be contingent on access to natural areas for TW and an instructor-led program with other cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Recording patients' ethnic group supports efforts to achieve equity in health care provision. Before the Equality Act (2010), recording ethnic group at hospital admission was poor in Scotland but has improved subsequently. We describe the first analysis of the utility of such data nationally for monitoring ethnic variation. METHODS: We analysed all in-patient or day case hospital admissions in 2013. We imputed missing data using the most recent ethnic group recorded for a patient from 2009 to 2015. For episodes lacking an ethnic code, we attributed known ethnic codes proportionately. Using the 2011 Census population, we calculated rates and rate ratios for all-cause admissions and ischaemic heart diseases (IHDs) directly standardized for age. RESULTS: Imputation reduced missing ethnic group codes from 24 to 15% and proportionate redistribution to zero. While some rates for both all-cause and IHD admissions appeared plausible, unexpectedly low or high rates were observed for several ethnic groups particularly amongst White groups and newly coded groups. CONCLUSIONS: Completeness of ethnicity recoding on hospital admission records has improved markedly since 2010. However the validity of admission rates based on these data is variable across ethnic groups and further improvements are required to support monitoring of inequality.

OBJECTIVE: Inadequate lung nodule surveillance leads to diagnostic delays. We implemented a retrospective intervention program, Nodule Net, to improve surveillance in our hospital. METHODS: 9,224 Chest computed tomography (CT) scans between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2016 were manually reviewed for lung nodules. For patients without follow-up, charts were reviewed to assess follow-up. If follow-up appeared indicated, the clinician or patient was contacted, and follow-up was tracked. RESULTS: Lung nodules were identified on 5,101 (55%) of 9,224 scans. Follow-up was potentially indicated and not completed in 1,385 (27%). 183 (13%) were excluded after imaging review. 1,202 received outreach. Of the 801 (66%) with a provider in our system, 225 (27%) returned for follow-up. Nodules were stable in 199 (88%), new or growing in 23 (11%), resolved in 3 (1%), and stage 1 lung cancer in 2 (1%). 90 (11%) had follow-up outside our system and 431 (51%) had no follow-up due to a clinical contraindication. 55 (7%) have imaging pending and 14 (2%) are awaiting pulmonary evaluation. Of the 302 (25%) patients with providers outside our system, 121 (40%) had followed-up elsewhere. 146 (48%) had no follow-up due to a clinical reason. 35 (12%) providers did not respond to outreach. CONCLUSIONS: We identified 1,202 patients with lung nodules who needed follow-up over a two-year period. Compliance was more successful with providers within our hospital system. We recommend robust surveillance for patients to ensure follow-up is completed and clinical contraindications are well documented.

RESUMO

As many as 25% of all patients undergoing invasive pulmonary procedures are receiving at least one antiplatelet or anticoagulant agent. For those undergoing elective procedures, the decision-making process is uncomplicated and the procedure may be postponed until the antiplatelet or anticoagulant agent may be safely held. However, many invasive pulmonary procedures are semi-elective or emergent in nature in which case a risk-benefit calculation and discussion occur between the provider and patient or surrogate decision-maker. Therefore, it is critical for providers to have an awareness of the risk of bleeding complications with different pulmonary procedures on various antiplatelet and anticoagulant agents. This systematic review summarizes the bleeding complications associated with different pulmonary procedures in patients on various antiplatelet or anticoagulant agents in the literature and reveals a paucity of high-quality evidence across a wide spectrum of pulmonary procedures and antiplatelet or anticoagulant agents. The results of this review can help inform providers of the bleeding risk in these patients to aid in the shared decision-making process and risk vs benefit discussion.

BACKGROUND: Increased vitamin B6 catabolism related to inflammation, as measured by the PAr index (the ratio of 4-pyridoxic acid over the sum of pyridoxal and pyridoxal-5'-phosphate), has been positively associated with lung cancer risk in two prospective European studies. However, the extent to which this association translates to more diverse populations is not known. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this study, we included 5323 incident lung cancer cases and 5323 controls individually matched by age, sex, and smoking status within each of 20 prospective cohorts from the Lung Cancer Cohort Consortium. Cohort-specific odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between PAr and lung cancer risk were calculated using conditional logistic regression and pooled using random-effects models. RESULTS: PAr was positively associated with lung cancer risk in a dose-response fashion. Comparing the fourth versus first quartiles of PAr resulted in an OR of 1.38 (95% CI: 1.19-1.59) for overall lung cancer risk. The association between PAr and lung cancer risk was most prominent in former smokers (OR: 1.69, 95% CI: 1.36-2.10), men (OR: 1.60, 95% CI: 1.28-2.00), and for cancers diagnosed within 3 years of blood draw (OR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.34-2.23). CONCLUSION: Based on pre-diagnostic data from 20 cohorts across 4 continents, this study confirms that increased vitamin B6 catabolism related to inflammation and immune activation is associated with a higher risk of developing lung cancer. Moreover, PAr may be a pre-diagnostic marker of lung cancer rather than a causal factor.

Background: There is observational evidence suggesting that high vitamin D concentrations may protect against lung cancer. To investigate this hypothesis in detail, we measured circulating vitamin D concentrations in prediagnostic blood from 20 cohorts participating in the Lung Cancer Cohort Consortium (LC3). Patients and methods: The study included 5313 lung cancer cases and 5313 controls. Blood samples for the cases were collected, on average, 5 years before lung cancer diagnosis. Controls were individually matched to the cases by cohort, sex, age, race/ethnicity, date of blood collection, and smoking status in five categories. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry was used to separately analyze 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 [25(OH)D2] and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] and their concentrations were combined to give an overall measure of 25(OH)D. We used conditional logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for 25(OH)D as both continuous and categorical variables. Results: Overall, no apparent association between 25(OH)D and risk of lung cancer was observed (multivariable adjusted OR for a doubling in concentration: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.91, 1.06). Similarly, we found no clear evidence of interaction by cohort, sex, age, smoking status, or histology. Conclusion: This study did not support an association between vitamin D concentrations and lung cancer risk.

A radical new methodology for the exogenous mineralization of hard tissues is demonstrated in the context of laser-biomaterials interaction. The proposed approach is based on the use of femtosecond pulsed lasers (fs) and Fe3+-doped calcium phosphate minerals (specifically in this work fluorapatite powder containing Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NP)). A layer of the synthetic powder is applied to the surface of eroded bovine enamel and is irradiated with a fs laser (1040 nm wavelength, 1 GHz repetition rate, 150 fs pulse duration and 0.4 W average power). The Fe2O3 NPs absorb the light and may act as thermal antennae, dissipating energy to the vicinal mineral phase. Such a photothermal process triggers the sintering and densification of the surrounding calcium phosphate crystals thereby forming a new, dense layer of typically ∼20 µm in thickness, which is bonded to the underlying surface of the natural enamel. The dispersed iron oxide NPs, ensure the localization of temperature excursion, minimizing collateral thermal damage to the surrounding natural tissue during laser irradiation. Simulated brushing trials (pH cycle and mechanical force) on the synthetic layer show that the sintered material is more acid resistant than the natural mineral of enamel. Furthermore, nano-indentation confirms that the hardness and Young's modulus of the new layers are significantly more closely matched to enamel than current restorative materials used in clinical dentistry. Although the results presented herein are exemplified in the context of bovine enamel restoration, the methodology may be more widely applicable to human enamel and other hard-tissue regenerative engineering. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In this work we provide a new methodology for the mineralisation of dental hard tissues using femtosecond lasers and iron doped biomaterials. In particular, we demonstrate selective laser sintering of an iron doped fluorapatite on the surface of eroded enamel under low average power and mid-IR wavelength and the formation of a new layer to substitute the removed material. The new layer is evaluated through simulated brushing trials and nano-indentation. From the results we can conclude that is more acid resistant than natural enamel while, its mechanical properties are superior to that of current restorative materials. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that someone demonstrated, laser sintering and bonding of calcium phosphate biomaterials on hard tissues. Although we here we discuss the case of dental enamel, similar approach can be adopted for other hard tissues, leading to new strategies for the fixation of bone/tooth defects.
