RESUMO

Smartphone-based technology for electrocardiographic recording is now part of the new concept of mobile health in both human and veterinary medicine. Although smartphone-based ECG for electrocardiographic screening in dogs is reliable, one-lead ECG devices have mainly been evaluated. This prospective study assessed the feasibility and the diagnostic reliability of a new smartphone-based six-lead electrocardiograph (smECG) in dogs, in comparison to a standard six-lead electrocardiograph (stECG). All ECG tracings were blindly reviewed by an expert operator, who judged whether tracings were acceptable for interpretation, performed the electrocardiographic measurements, and assigned a diagnosis. The agreement in the electrocardiographic interpretation and diagnosis between smECG and stECG was assessed using the Bland-Altman test and Cohen's k test. The study included 108 client-owned dogs. The tracings obtained by the smECG were interpretable in 100 % of cases. No clinically relevant differences between smECG and stECG were found in the assessment of heart rate, interval duration, and QRS mean electrical axis. The smECG tended to underestimate the amplitude of the P and R waves. Perfect agreement was found in the detection of sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, atrioventricular blocks, and bundle branch blocks. Our study suggests that the tested smartphone-based six-lead ECG is a clinically reliable device for the assessment of heart rate and heart rhythm in dogs, and thus could be used in a clinical setting in dogs and for telemedicine.

INTRODUCTION: No data are available on the echocardiographic reference intervals (RIs) for the main pulmonary artery (MPA) and right pulmonary artery (RPA) dimensions in a large sample of dogs. Therefore, we aimed to describe the echocardiographic RIs of the MPA and RPA dimensions in normal dogs. ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Two hundred and sixty nine healthy dogs of different breeds, age and body weight (BW) were prospectively enrolled in this multicenter, observational study. The MPA diameter, RPA maximum diameter (RPAmax), and RPA minimum diameter (RPAmin) were measured from the right parasternal short axis view. Prediction intervals (PIs) for MPA, RPAmax and RPAmin were generated using allometric scales. Reference intervals (RI) of MPA indexed to the ascending aorta (MPA/AO), and RPAmax and RPAmin indexed to the aortic annulus (RPAmax/Aod and RPAmin/Aod), were defined. RESULTS: A positive linear relationship between MPA, RPAmax, RPAmin and BW was evident after logarithmic transformation (R2 = 0.859, R2 = 0.787 and R2 = 0.725, respectively; P<0.0001). According to allometric scales, the PI for the MPA normalized for BW (MPA_N) was between 5.50 and 8.07, the PI for the RPAmax normalized for BW (RPAmax_N) was between 3.23 and 5.62, while the PI for the RPAmin normalized for BW (RPAmin_N) was between 1.62 and 3.30. The median MPA/AO was 0.92 (RI, 0.78-1.01), the median RPAmax/Aod was 0.70 (RI, 0.53-0.98) and the median RPAmin/Aod was 0.40 (RI, 0.29-0.61). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The reported RIs of the MPA and RPA dimensions in normal dogs could increase the diagnostic accuracy of transthoracic echocardiography in the identification of pulmonary artery enlargement in dogs.

This study assessed a new smartphone-based digital stethoscope (DS) featuring simultaneous phonocardiographic and one-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) recording in dogs and cats. The audio files and ECG traces obtained by the device were compared with conventional auscultation and standard ECG. A total of 99 dogs and nine cats were prospectively included. All cases underwent conventional auscultation using an acoustic stethoscope, standard six-lead ECG, standard echocardiography and recordings with the DS. All the audio recordings, phonocardiographic files and ECG traces were then blind reviewed by an expert operator. The agreement between methods was assessed using Cohen's kappa and the Bland-Altman test. Audio recordings were considered interpretable in 90% animals. Substantial agreement was found in the diagnosis of heart murmur (κ = 0.691) and gallop sound (k = 0.740). In nine animals with an echocardiographic diagnosis of heart disease, only the DS detected a heart murmur or gallop sound. ECG traces recorded with the new device were deemed interpretable in 88 % animals. Diagnosis of heart rhythm showed moderate agreement in the identification of atrial fibrillation (k = 0.596). The detection of ventricular premature complexes and bundle branch blocks revealed an almost perfect agreement (k = 1). Overall, the DS showed a good diagnostic accuracy in detecting heart murmurs, gallop sounds, ventricular premature complexes and bundle branch blocks. A clinically relevant overdiagnosis of atrial fibrillation was found but without evidence of false negatives. The DS could represent a useful screening tool for heart sound abnormalities and cardiac arrhythmias..

INTRODUCTION: According to the most recent consensus guidelines on canine myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), dogs with only left atrial enlargement (LAE) or left ventricular enlargement are classified as stage B1. The concomitant presence of LAE and left ventricular enlargement is needed to be classified as stage B2. The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the prognosis in stage B1 and stage B2 according to the revised definition. The secondary aim was to assess the prognostic relevance of LAE in stage B1. ANIMALS: A total of 440 dogs with MMVD, 276 in stage B1 and 164 in stage B2. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective and observational study. The left atrium-to-aorta ratio and the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter normalized were used to define cardiac dimensions. The long-term outcome was assessed by telephone interviews with owners and referring vets. Both cardiac-related and all-cause mortality were evaluated. RESULTS: Stage B1 dogs had a longer median survival time than stage B2, considering both cardiac-related death (2344 vs. 1341 days; P<0.001) and all-cause mortality (1832 vs. 855 days; P<0.001). Age, left atrium-to-aorta ratio, and the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter normalized were independent predictors of cardiac-related death and all-cause mortality. Among stage B1, dogs with LAE lived shorter than those without LAE (1183 vs. 1882 days; P=0.005) considering all-cause mortality. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Stage B1 dogs lived longer than stage B2 dogs. Among stage B1, LAE had prognostic relevance considering all-cause mortality. This finding could add useful prognostic information in the management of preclinical MMVD.

INTRODUCTION: Two radiographic measures of the left atrial (LA) size, the vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) and the radiographic left atrial dimension (RLAD), have been described in dogs. The aim of this study was to determine their feasibility and diagnostic value in the prediction of LA enlargement and clinical stage in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). ANIMALS: 111 client-owned dogs affected by MMVD. METHODS: Retrospective study. In each dog, VLAS, RLAD, vertebral heart score (VHS), and left atrium-to-aorta-ratio (LA/Ao) were measured. The correlation between VLAS, RLAD, and LA/Ao was evaluated. The diagnostic accuracy of VLAS and RLAD was assessed for the detection of LA enlargement and clinical staging using the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS: A positive correlation was observed between VLAS, RLAS, and LA/Ao (r = 0.816 and r = 0.855, respectively; p<0.0001). Both VLAS (area under the curve [AUC], 0.93; p<0.0001) and RLAD (AUC, 0.98; p<0.0001) showed high diagnostic accuracy in the detection of LA enlargement. In the stage B, the RLAD (AUC, 0.99; cutoff, ≥1.8; sensitivity, 100%; specificity 93%) performed better than VLAS (AUC, 0.90; cutoff, ≥2.4; sensitivity, 66%; specificity 100%) and VHS (AUC, 0.89; cutoff, ≥10.7; sensitivity, 88%; specificity 83%) in the detection of dogs fulfilling the echocardiographic criteria for stage B2. CONCLUSIONS: VLAS and RLAD represent useful radiological tools for the detection of LA enlargement in dogs with MMVD. In asymptomatic dogs, the RLAD performs better than VLAS and VHS in the prediction of those fulfilling the echocardiographic criteria for stage B2.

A seven-year-old, spayed female, domestic longhair cat was referred for management of a sudden aortic thromboembolism (ATE). Echocardiography showed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with severe left atrial enlargement. Ultrasonography of the abdominal aorta confirmed a large thrombus at the level of the aortic trifurcation, involving both iliac arteries. Considering the recent onset and bilateral involvement of the iliac arteries, the cat underwent emergent surgical embolectomy (SE) of the aortoiliac embolus. A standard caudal celiotomy was performed and the abdominal aorta was identified. Vessel loops with tourniquets were placed around the abdominal aorta proximal to the thrombus and on both iliac arteries distal to the thrombus. A full-thickness incision was made in the ventral surface of the aorta. The aortic thromboembolus was removed. The trifurcation was subsequently flushed with sterile saline. The SE resulted in a good outcome, with both clinical and ultrasound signs of complete reperfusion of the rear limbs within a few hours. Long-term treatment included antiplatelet drugs, furosemide and benazepril. Eighteen months after surgery, the cat was free of clinical signs, without recurrence of ATE or congestive heart failure. Based on the present case, SE could be considered as a feasible alternative to traditional conservative treatment in cats with a very recent onset of bilateral ATE.

A major environmental pollution problem is the release into the atmosphere of particulate matter, including nanoparticles (NPs), which causes serious hazards to human and ecosystem health, particularly in urban areas. However, knowledge about the uptake, translocation and accumulation of NPs in plant tissues is almost completely lacking. The uptake of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) and their transport and accumulation in the leaves, stems and roots of three different tree species, downy oak (Quercus pubescens Willd.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and black poplar (Populus nigra L.), were assessed. In the experiment, Ag-NPs were supplied separately to the leaves (via spraying, the foliar treatment) and roots (via watering, the root treatment) of the three species. Uptake, transport and accumulation of Ag were investigated through spectroscopy. The concentration of Ag in the stem was higher in the foliar than in the root treatment, and in poplar more than in oak and pine. Foliar treatment with Ag-NPs reduced aboveground biomass and stem length in poplars, but not in oaks or pines. Species-specific signals of oxidative stress were observed; foliar treatment of oak caused the accumulation of H2O2 in leaves, and both foliar and root treatments of poplar led to increased O2- in leaves. Ag-NPs affected leaf and root bacteria and fungi; in the case of leaves, foliar treatment reduced bacterial populations in oak and poplar and fungi populations in pine, and in the case of roots, root treatment reduced bacteria and increased fungi in poplar. Species-specific mechanisms of interaction, transport, allocation and storage of NPs in trees were found. We demonstrated definitively that NPs enter into the tree stem through leaves faster than through roots in all of the investigated tree species.

BACKGROUND: Right atrial area (RAA) is a prognostic factor in human patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Reference intervals for RAA have been described in healthy dogs. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate RAA indexed to the body surface area in dogs with PAH as an indicator of right atrial size, PAH severity and right-sided congestive heart failure (R-CHF). ANIMALS: A total of 119 client-owned dogs, 48 dogs with PAH and 71 control dogs. METHODS: Prospective observational study. Pulmonary arterial hypertension was classified according to the tricuspid regurgitation pressure gradient (TRPG) as mild (36-50 mmHg), moderate (51-75 mmHg), or severe (>75 mmHg). The RAA index was calculated as the RAA divided by body surface area. RESULTS: The RAA index was higher in dogs with moderate PAH (13.3 cm2 /m2 ; range, 3.4-24.7 cm2 /m2 ) and severe PAH (12.1 cm2 /m2 ; range, 5.4-21.8 cm2 /m2 ) than in those with mild PAH (6.7 cm2 /m2 ; range, 4.8-10.7 cm2 /m2 ) or in controls (7.3 cm2 /m2 ; range, 4.2-10.2 cm2 /m2 ; P < 0.001). The RAA index was higher (P < 0.0001) in dogs with R-CHF (17.5 cm2 /m2 ; range, 12.7-24.7 cm2 /m2 ) compared to those without R-CHF (7.6 cm2 /m2 ; range, 4.4-19.4 cm2 /m2 ). The most accurate cutoff value of the RAA index to identify R-CHF was >12.3 cm2 /m2 (sensitivity, 100%; specificity, 89.5%). In dogs with PAH, severity of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) was the only independent predictor of RAA index based on multivariate analysis (P < 0.02). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: The RAA index can be used to evaluate right atrial size in dogs and may be more effective than TRPG in predicting R-CHF in dogs with PAH. The severity of TR is the main determinant of the RAA index in dogs with PAH.

Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of droughts and heatwaves in Europe, leading to effects on forest growth and major forest dieback events due to hydraulic failure caused by xylem embolism. Inter-specific variability in embolism resistance has been studied in detail, but little is known about intra-specific variability, particularly in marginal populations. We evaluated 15 European beech populations, mostly from geographically marginal sites of the species distribution range, focusing particularly on populations from the dry southern margin. We found small, but significant differences in resistance to embolism between populations, with xylem pressures causing 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity ranging from -2.84 to -3.55 MPa. Significant phenotypic clines of increasing embolism resistance with increasing temperature and aridity were observed: the southernmost beech populations growing in a warmer drier climate and with lower habitat suitability have higher resistance to embolism than those from Northern Europe growing more favourable conditions. Previous studies have shown that there is little or no difference in embolism resistance between core populations, but our findings show that marginal populations have developed ways of protecting their xylem based on either evolution or plasticity.

Monitoring atmospheric pollution in industrial areas near urban center is essential to infer past levels of contamination and to evaluate the impact for environmental health and safety. The main aim of this study was to understand if the chemical composition of tree-ring wood can be used for monitoring spatial-temporal variability of pollutants in Terni, Central Italy, one of the most polluted towns in Italy. Tree cores were taken from 32 downy oaks (Quercus pubescens) located at different distances from several pollutant sources, including a large steel factory. Trace element (Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Hg, Mo, Ni, Tl, W, U, V, and Zn) index in tree-ring wood was determined using high-resolution laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). We hypothesized that the presence of contaminants detected in tree-rings reflected industrial activities over time. The accumulation of contaminants in tree-rings was affected by anthropogenic activities in the period 1958-2009, though signals varied in intensity with the distance of trees from the industrial plant. A stronger limitation of tree growth was observed in the proximity of the industrial plant in comparison with other pollutant sources. Levels of Cr, Ni, Mo, V, U and W increased in tree-ring profiles of trees close to the steel factory, especially during the 80's and 90's, in correspondence to a peak of pollution in this period, as recorded by air quality monitoring stations. Uranium contents in our tree-rings were difficult to explain, while the higher contents of Cu, Hg, Pb, and Tl could be related to the contaminants released from an incinerator located close to the industrial plant. The accumulation of contaminants in tree-rings reflected the historical variation of environmental pollution in the considered urban context.

BACKGROUND: In dogs with chronic valvular heart disease (CVHD), early recognition of pulmonary edema (PE) is of paramount importance. Recent studies in dogs showed that lung ultrasound examination (LUS) is a useful technique to diagnose cardiogenic PE. OBJECTIVES: To describe LUS features in dogs with different stages of CVHD, and to determine its diagnostic accuracy in detecting PE using thoracic radiography as the reference standard. ANIMALS: Sixty-three dogs with CVHD. METHODS: Prospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study. Each dog underwent physical examination, echocardiography, thoracic radiography, and LUS. The LUS findings were classified as absent, rare, numerous, or confluent B-lines. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of LUS B-lines to identify PE were calculated using thoracic radiography as the reference standard. RESULTS: Dogs in stage B1 had absent or rare B-lines in 14 of 15 cases (93.3%). Dogs in stage B2 had absent or rare B-lines in 16 of 18 cases (88.9%). All dogs in stage C, without radiographic signs of PE, had absent or rare B-lines. Dogs in stage C, with radiographic signs of PE, had numerous or confluent B-lines in 18 of 20 cases (90%). Lung ultrasound examination detected PE with a sensitivity of 90%, specificity of 93%, and with positive and negative predictive values of 85.7 and 95.2%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Lung ultrasound examination showed good diagnostic accuracy to identify cardiogenic PE and might be helpful in staging dogs with CVHD. Lung ultrasound examination should be considered as a new, noninvasive diagnostic tool for clinicians managing CVHD in dogs.

Root systems have a pivotal role in plant anchorage and their mechanical interactions with the soil may contribute to soil reinforcement and stabilization of slide-prone slopes. In order to understand the responses of root system to mechanical stress induced by slope, samples of Spartium junceum L., growing in slope and in plane natural conditions, were compared in their morphology, biomechanical properties and anatomical features. Soils sampled in slope and plane revealed similar characteristics, with the exception of organic matter content and penetrometer resistance, both higher in slope. Slope significantly influenced root morphology and in particular the distribution of lateral roots along the soil depth. Indeed, first-order lateral roots of plants growing on slope condition showed an asymmetric distribution between up- and down-slope. Contrarily, this asymmetric distribution was not observed in plants growing in plane. The tensile strength was higher in lateral roots growing up-slope and in plane conditions than in those growing down-slope. Anatomical investigations revealed that, while roots grown up-slope had higher area covered by xylem fibers, the ratio of xylem and phloem fibers to root diameter did not differ among the three conditions, as also, no differences were found for xylem fiber cell wall thickness. Roots growing up-slope were the main contributors to anchorage properties, which included higher strength and higher number of fibers in the xylematic tissues. Results suggested that a combination of root-specific morphological, anatomical and biomechanical traits, determines anchorage functions in slope conditions.

The diagnostic accuracy of a smartphone electrocardiograph (ECG) in evaluating heart rhythm and ECG measurements was evaluated in 166 dogs. A standard 6-lead ECG was acquired for 1 min in each dog. A smartphone ECG tracing was simultaneously recorded using a single-lead bipolar ECG recorder. All ECGs were reviewed by one blinded operator, who judged if tracings were acceptable for interpretation and assigned an electrocardiographic diagnosis. Agreement between smartphone and standard ECG in the interpretation of tracings was evaluated. Sensitivity and specificity for the detection of arrhythmia were calculated for the smartphone ECG. Smartphone ECG tracings were interpretable in 162/166 (97.6%) tracings. A perfect agreement between the smartphone and standard ECG was found in detecting bradycardia, tachycardia, ectopic beats and atrioventricular blocks. A very good agreement was found in detecting sinus rhythm versus non-sinus rhythm (100% sensitivity and 97.9% specificity). The smartphone ECG provided tracings that were adequate for analysis in most dogs, with an accurate assessment of heart rate, rhythm and common arrhythmias. The smartphone ECG represents an additional tool in the diagnosis of arrhythmias in dogs, but is not a substitute for a 6-lead ECG. Arrhythmias identified by the smartphone ECG should be followed up with a standard ECG before making clinical decisions.

BACKGROUND: The diseases most frequent associated with SIRS in adult horses are those involving the gastrointestinal tract. An early diagnosis should be the goal in the management of horses with SIRS. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the plasma procalcitonin (PCT) concentration in healthy and SIRS horses to assess differences between the two groups. ANIMALS: Seventy-eight horses (30 healthy and 48 SIRS). METHODS: Prospective in vivo multicentric study. Horses were classified as SIRS if at least 2 of the following criteria were met: abnormal leukocyte count or distribution, hyperthermia or hypothermia, tachycardia, tachypnea. Healthy horses showed no clinical or laboratory signs of SIRS. Plasma PCT concentrations were measured with a commercial ELISA assay for equine species. Results were expressed as mean±standard deviation. T-test for unpaired data was performed between healthy and SIRS group. SIRS group was divided in 4 subgroups and t-test was performed between healthy versus each subgroup. RESULTS: PCT concentrations in healthy and SIRS horses were 18.28 ± 20.32 and 197.0 ± 117.0 pg/mL, respectively. T-test showed statistical differences between healthy versus SIRS group and between healthy versus all subgroups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Results showed an increase in PCT concentration in SIRS horses as previously reported in humans and dogs. PCT could be used as a single assay in equine practice for detection of SIRS.

To face summer drought and wildfire in Mediterranean-type ecosystems, plants adopt different strategies that involve considerable rearrangements of biomass allocation and physiological activity. This paper analyses morphological and physiological traits in seedlings of three oak species (Quercus ilex, Quercus trojana and Quercus virgiliana) co-occurring under natural conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate species-specific characteristics and the response of these oak seedlings to drought stress and fire treatment. Seedlings were kept in a growth chamber that mimicked natural environmental conditions. All three species showed a good degree of tolerance to drought and fire treatments. Differences in specific biomass allocation patterns and physiological traits resulted in phenotypic differences between species. In Q. ilex, drought tolerance depended upon adjustment of the allocation pattern. Q. trojana seedlings undergoing mild to severe drought presented a higher photosystem II (PSII) efficiency than control seedlings. Moreover, Q. trojana showed a very large root system, which corresponded to higher soil area exploitation, and bigger leaf midrib vascular bundles than the other two species. Morphological and physiological performances indicated Q. trojana as the most tolerant to drought and fire. These characteristics contribute to a high recruitment potential of Q. trojana seedlings, which might be the reason for the dominance of this species under natural conditions. Drought increase as a result of climate change is expected to favour Q. trojana, leading to an increase in its spatial distribution.

Escherichia coli are a common inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract of mammals and birds; nevertheless, they may be associated with a variety of severe and invasive infections. Whereas fluoroquinolones (FQ) have been banned in the United States for use in poultry production, the use of these antimicrobials in poultry husbandry is still possible in the European Union, although with some restrictions. The aim of this study was to investigate the FQ resistance of 235 E. coli isolates recovered from chickens and turkeys. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined by a microdilution method, whereas mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions of the target genes, gyrA and parC, were detected by a PCR-based method. High resistance rates (>60%) were observed for nalidixic acid, flumequine, and difloxacin, whereas resistance to ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, enrofloxacin, marbofloxacin, and sarafloxacin was less frequently reported (<40%). Sixty-four isolates (27.2%) showed full susceptibility toward the tested FQ, but 57 isolates (24.2%) were resistant to all tested FQ. The remaining 114 E. coli isolates (48.5%) were grouped in 5 different resistance patterns. Isolates resistant only to flumequine or nalidixic acid or both possessed 1 gyrA mutation, whereas isolates with further resistance to enrofloxacin, difloxacin, danofloxacin, and sarafloxacin had in addition 1 or 2 parC substitutions. Two gyrA mutations coupled with 1 substitution in parC were detected in isolates resistant to all tested FQ. The number of mutations and their correlation with the in vitro activity of FQ reflected the currently accepted model, according to which a single gyrA substitution is associated with resistance or decreased susceptibility to older quinolones, whereas further gyrA or parC substitutions are needed for a higher level of resistance.

The susceptibility to 23 antimicrobial agents was determined in 114 isolates of Staphylococcus intermedius and eight isolates of Staphylococcus schleiferi of canine origin. Overall, 73% of S. intermedius isolates and 37.5% of S. schleiferi isolates were susceptible to all the 23 antimicrobials tested. The large majority of S. intermedius strains retained susceptibility to antimicrobials currently employed in treatment of pyoderma (cephalosporins, cotrimoxazole and association amoxicillin-clavulanic acid) as well as to those effective against staphylococci (fusidic acid, rifampicin and fluoroquinolones). Resistance in S. intermedius was observed mainly against macrolides, chloramphenicol and lincosamides, while S. schleiferi isolates retained susceptibility to all antimicrobials except three of six fluoroquinolones. Although, our results confirm susceptibility to antimicrobials currently employed in pyoderma treatment, the several different resistance patterns observed for S. intermedius emphasize the importance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing of canine staphylococci to choose the most appropriate treatment of infections and to allow the prudent use of antimicrobial drugs in companion animals.

The objective of the present study was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of 136 canine isolates of Staphylococcus intermedius and 10 canine isolates of S. schleiferi subspecies coagulans to 16 fluoroquinolones (FQs), and to investigate the mechanisms of resistance in the nonsusceptible isolates. Of the 136 of S. intermedius tested 98.5% were susceptible to all 16 FQs whereas only 40% of the 10 isolates of S. schleiferi subspecies coagulans were susceptible. Two isolates of S. intermedius and six isolates of S. schleiferi, were found to be resistant to 13 out of 16 FQs, while they retained their susceptibility to fourth generation FQs such as gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin and trovafloxacin. Sequencing of the quinolone-resistance determining regions of gyrA and grlA genes showed that in S. intermedius, dichotomous resistance to FQs was associated with the occurrence of one alteration in GyrA-84 and one in GrlA-80, while in S. schleiferi the same pattern of resistance was observed in isolates showing these changes only in gyrA. This study is the first to screen FQs of the second, third and fourth generation for antimicrobial resistance in clinical isolates of S. intermedius and S. schleiferi of canine origin, and to describe mutations in gyrA and grlA associated with FQ resistance in these bacterial species.

Annual variations in the water relations and stomatal response of Erica arborea, Myrtus communis and Juniperus communis occurring at a natural CO(2) vent were analysed under Mediterranean field conditions. A distinct gradient of CO(2)concentration ([CO(2)]) exists between two sites near a natural CO(2)-emitting vent, with higher [CO(2)] (700 micromol mol(-1)) in the proximity of the CO(2) spring. Plants at the CO(2) spring site have been growing for generations at elevated [CO(2)]. At both sites, maximum leaf conductance was related to predawn shoot water potential. The effects of water deficits during the summer drought were severe. Leaf conductance and water potential recovered after major rainfalls in September to predrought values. Strong relationships between leaf conductance, predawn water potential, and leaf-specific hydraulic resistance are consistent with the role of stomata in regulating plant water status. Considerable between-species variation in sensitivity of water potentials and stomatal characters to elevated [CO(2)] were observed. Common to all the shrubs were a reduction in leaf conductance and an increase in water potentials in response to elevated [CO(2)]. Elevated [CO(2)] decreased the sensitivity of leaf conductance to vapour pressure deficit. Morphological characters (including stomatal density and degree of sclerophylly) showed site-dependent variations, but degree and sign of such changes varied with the species and/or the season. Measurements of discrimination against (13)C provided evidence for long-term decreases of water use efficiency in CO(2) spring plants. Analysis of C isotope composition suggested that a downward adjustment of photosynthetic capacity may have occurred under elevated [CO(2)]. Elevated [CO(2)] effects on water relations and leaf morphology persisted in the long term, but the three shrubs growing in the same environment showed species-specific responses.
