INTRODUCTION: Feedback is essential to improve student learning and motivation and to encourage curriculum development by teachers. This study looked at feedback to and from dental students from a qualitative perspective. METHODS: Dental teachers were recruited exclusively to this study from the membership of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE). Delegates from each of the four annual ADEE conferences were invited to attend focus groups to discuss aspects of feedback. Focus groups established an individual theme for the respective conferences: (i) the role of the teacher in delivering feedback; (ii) feedback from the students' perspective; (iii) changes to feedback due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and (iv) integrating feedback with assessments. RESULTS: Qualitative data collected from the conference delegates were diverse and thought provoking. Delegates reported different styles of feedback varying from individual, personal feedback to no feedback at all. An enforced and mostly positive adaptation to online delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic was reported. A partial return to pre-pandemic practices was described. CONCLUSIONS: Feedback is well recognized by students and teachers as contributing to learning. A universal approach to delivering feedback as part of the student learning process can be challenging due to a multitude of variables. Many aspects of changes in dental education, teaching, and feedback practices adopted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have been retained post-pandemic, thereby accelerating the anticipated progression to online teaching.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the performance of Ultrasonography (US) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in assessing the Lateral Periarticular Space (LPAS) of Temporomandibular Joints (TMJs) in patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). METHODS: The LPAS width was evaluated in two different patient groups. In the JIA group, including 29 children (13 ± 2.8 years) with JIA, the LPAS width was measured with both MRI and US. In the healthy group, including 28 healthy children (12.6 ± 2.5 years), the LPAS width was measured only with US. Comparisons of LPAS width based on patient groups and TMJ contrast enhancement in MRI were evaluated by applying the Mann-Whitney U test. Correlation and agreement between MRI and US measurements in JIA group were tested using Spearman rank correlation and Bland-Altman method. RESULTS: The LPAS width was significantly greater in the JIA group than in the healthy group. In the JIA group, the LPAS width was significantly greater in TMJs with moderate/severe enhancement than those with mild enhancement. A positive significant correlation between MRI and US measurements of LPAS width was found in the JIA group. In the same group, Bland-Altman method showed a good level of agreement between MRI and US measurements. CONCLUSION: Although, US cannot replace MRI in the evaluation of TMJ in patients with JIA, US could be used as a supplementary imaging method to MRI in assessing the TMJ disease.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of treatment of posterior crossbite (PXB) in the mixed dentition with the Function Generating Bite (FGB) appliance on the transverse dimension of the dental arches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 84 PXB patients (female = 46; male = 38; mean age, 8.2 ± 1.8 years) and 69 control (C) patients (female = 31; male = 38; mean age, 8.9 ± 1.4 years). Measurements were taken with digital calipers on maxillary and mandibular study casts before (T0) and after (T1) treatment for the following measures: intermolar (IMD), intermolar gingival (IMGD), intercanine (ICD), and intercanine gingival distances (ICGD). RESULTS: At T0, there was a significant difference in all maxillary measurements between the PXB and C groups (P < .001), reflecting maxillary hypoplasia in PXB patients. At T1, there was no difference between the groups. In PXB patients, the mean increase between T0 and T1 for IMD was 4.34 ± 2.42 mm; this difference measured 3.51 ± 2.19 mm for IMGD, 2.78 ± 2.37 mm for ICS, and 1.89 ± 1.7 mm for ICGD. There was no significant difference in mandibular measurements between groups at T0 and T1. CONCLUSIONS: Functional therapy with FGB is effective in significantly increasing the transverse dimension of the maxillary dental arch in PXB patients. Considering its efficacy in treating masticatory dysfunction, FGB may be considered a good treatment option for the correction of PXB in growing children.

BACKGROUND: Feedback offered to dental students by their tutors should aim to elicit ongoing learning and motivation. Previous studies looked at the impact on learning of feedback delivered by tutors from tutors' perspectives. However, what students know about feedback and its purposes and how they experience them during their study effect the impact of feedback on learning. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the proprieties of tutor feedback and its impact on future learning from the students' perspective. METHODS: A short questionnaire based cross sectional survey was designed and delivered electronically to 135 undergraduate and postgraduate students at Brescia Dental School, Italy. The questionnaire consisted of 16 questions which were divided into 3 sections. Quantitative data were collected via Google Forms, the analysis of the data was undertaken using SPSS software, Version 24. RESULTS: Sixty-one students (45.2%) responded to the questionnaire. Forty-one of respondents (67.2%) were undergraduate students and 20 (32.8%) were postgraduate students. The vast majority of students indicated that they received feedback, thirty (49.2%) indicated that it was delivered by tutors and eight (13.1%) by fellow students. Further, students reported that feedback was timely, delivered within two weeks of assessments and that constructive criticism was the favoured feedback style (N.=52, 85.2%). Most students felt that the feedback they received helped with ongoing learning (N.=54, 88.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Most of the respondents considered that feedback received at Brescia Dental school did have a positive impact on their learning. This is of course what tutors hope would be the case but nevertheless it is gratifying to receive this endorsement from the respondent students. A more comprehensive study involving multiple dental schools in different learning environments will now be undertaken, including the collection of qualitative data.

OBJECTIVES: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare skeletal syndrome affecting craniofacial and dental development. As a consequence, conventional cephalometric landmarks may not be valid for CCD patients, and the appropriateness of norms used for the general population should be critically discussed. METHODS: Five patients 9- to 22-year-old (three females, two males) with CCD were included. Lateral-cephalograms, orthopantomographies, and intra-oral photos were retrospectively analysed. Lateral-cephalograms of 50 normal controls (ten for each CCD patient) matched for age and sex were selected from an online database. Cephalometric measurements of each CCD patients were compared with average values of matched controls using Wilcoxon signed-rank test for paired values (α = 0.05). RESULTS: In CCD patients, a shortening of the cranial base was present (ΔSN = -17.1 mm, p = 0.043). Thus, the mandible (ΔSNPg = +9.5°, p = 0.043) and the maxilla (ΔSNA = +11.2°, p = 0.043) showed protrusion compared to the cranial base, despite a reduced maxillary (ΔCo-A = -15.1 mm, p = 0.043) and mandibular (ΔCo-Gn = -15.2 mm, p = 0.080) length. The mandibular divergence was reduced (ΔSN/GoGn = -6.4°, p = 0.043), a reduced overbite was present (ΔOverbite = -2.9 mm, p = 0.043), and the interincisal angle was increased (ΔInterincisalAngle = +13.7°, p = 0.043), mainly due to retro-inclination of lower incisors. CONCLUSIONS: Standard cephalometric norms for the assessment of horizontal jaw position may not be applicable to CCD patients because of a reduced anterior cranial base length compared to normal subjects. Vertical relationships may not be affected, and mandibular hypodivergency was confirmed.

OBJECTIVES: As it is well known, the diagnosis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement in patients affected by Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is important to avoid the impairment of mandibular growth. In this context, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the gold-standard for detection of TMJ involvement, however it is expensive and requires patients' collaboration. The aim of this study was to evaluate if ultrasound may be used as an alternative tool to investigate the acute signs of TMJ involvement in JIA patients. METHODS: Lateral periarticular space (LPAS) and joint effusion were evaluated by ultrasound in a study Group A of 8 JIA children (11.6±3.5 years old) with 14 TMJs involved, as confirmed by MRI, and in a control Group B of 7 healthy children (9.3±1.2 years old) without temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The LPAS width values were compared between the two groups using the Mann-Whitney test. The ultrasound images of the JIA group were then matched with the corresponding MR images; the Spearman Rank Correlation test and the Bland-Altman test were used to evaluate the differences. RESULTS: The LPAS values in Group A were statistically significantly higher than those in Group B (p < 0.001). There was no overlap of the LPAS values confidence intervals (CIs) between the two groups. No signs of joint effusion were identified in groups A and B. The Spearman test applied to the values of LPAS measured in ultrasound and the corresponding MR images showed a proportional positive correlation with a ρ of 0.623 and a p < 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound can detect differences in the TMJ features between JIA patients and healthy patients and it might be used as a follow-up tool in the assessment of TMJ involvement in subject affected by JIA.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the attitude of dentists and patients towards the use of Dental MonitoringTM (DM), an orthodontic telemonitoring software. Thus, two different specially prepared specific questionnaires were administered to 80 dentists (40 were general dentists and 40 orthodontists) and 80 orthodontic patients. All dentists judged positively telemonitoring, as 96.25% of them considered telemonitoring indicative of high tech and high-quality treatment; 100% considered it a way to reduce the number of in-office visits; 17.5% agreed on a weekly telemonitoring frequency, 40% on a biweekly, and 42.5% on a lower frequency. Further, 97.5% of patients judged positively telemonitoring; 81.25% of them considered telemonitoring indicative of high-tech treatment; 81.25% declared to be interested in reducing the number of in-office visits through telemonitoring; 27.5% agreed on taking self-picture every week, 57.5% every two weeks, and 15% on a lower frequency. Both patients and dentists positively judged telemonitoring, considering it a technologically advanced tool increasing the perception of quality and accuracy of the treatment. Both groups were interested in reducing the number of in-office visits, although not all of them revealed to be ready to invest more money and time in it.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the presence of ectopic calcification in the elongation of the styloid process (SP) and its possible clinical manifestation (Eagle syndrome) in a population of kidney-transplant patients previously treated with hemodialysis.Methods: Digital orthopantomography of 92 kidney-transplanted patients and 68 control subjects were analyzed to measure the length of SPs. Calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) blood levels were also available for comparison.Results: The mean length of SPs was significantly different between groups, as were phosphate and PTH values.Discussion: Renal transplant patients who have been treated with hemodialysis present elongated SPs, presumably due to alterations in phosphate balance and PTH levels. Thus, in cases of orofacial pain in patients with a history of altered bone metabolism, particularly when due to renal insufficiency, Eagle syndrome should be suspected as the main cause of symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Feedback plays a significant role in informing students about the outcome of their assessments and contributes to their ongoing learning. The aim of this study was to investigate feedback currently given by clinical teachers to dental students throughout Europe. METHODS: This study used a piloted questionnaire, delivered on-line to members of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE). A largely quantitative approach was adopted with multiple-choice, single answer, open text boxes and Likert scale type questions. These data were collected via Google Forms, transferred to an excel spreadsheet and analysed using SPSS software Version 24. RESULTS: Data were collected from 223 questionnaires completed by respondents from 42 countries. Students received feedback following: (i) formative assessment (70%; n = 155), (ii) summative assessment (88%; n = 196) and iii) informally at any time (85%; n = 188). Feedback was delivered by different people including administrative staff (15%; n = 25). Several methods were used to deliver feedback, including written, oral/spoken, email and individually or as a group. 85% (n = 184) of teachers reported that their teaching had changed following feedback they had received from students. CONCLUSION: The study showed a strong ethos of delivering feedback from teachers to dental students following both assessment and non-assessment related activities. Teachers should understand/appreciate the individualistic nature of feedback and the importance of cultivating a congenial environment for feedback delivery. Challenges remain in delivering them to a high standard and in a timely manner.

Dental root calcification has proven to be a reliable biological evidence to estimate chronological age of children. The development of structures usually examined in the age estimation forensic practice (e.g. skeleton, teeth) is supposed to be influenced by diseases and nutritional, environmental, ethnic, and ultimately even socioeconomic factors. This research aims to study the age estimation in children affected by juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) with and without steroids treatment and compared with healthy subjects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Dental age estimations based on 752 OPGs, 420 girls and 332 boys, aged from 3.3 to 15.99 years, were provided by applying Demirjian and Willems' original methods. Of the whole sample, 103 individuals were affected by JRA and 40 received a continuous corticosteroid therapy, over 1 year long. CONCLUSIONS: Willems' and Demirjian's original methods, as methods commonly applied to estimate age for sub-adults with unremarkable medical history, can be used for medico-legal purposes to children affected by JRA. Willems' method tended to underestimate age while Demirjian's method resulted to be prone to overestimation for both healthy and JRA-affected children. JRA showed to have no influence on root calcification process even in children that received steroid treatment for 1 year or longer.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review had the purpose to collect existing data concerning the influence of food hardness on mastication in adults. DESIGN: The review was listed with PROSPERO (CRD42017069760) and was directed following with PRISMA and CRD (Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, University of York) statement. A database search of articles issued from 1998 up to December 2018 was carried-out using four databases: Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Scopus. The lists of references of the articles selected for the review were read to identify any other relevant studies. The included publications were analysed for level of evidence, study design, sample characteristics, test of mastication, primary outcomes and key results. A quality assessment of the articles included in the review was performed. RESULTS: 1686 articles were found through database searching. The studies that complied with all the inclusion criteria and were considered for the conclusive analysis were 38 and their methodological quality was scored as moderate/low. The findings of the analysed articles were consistent, despite the presence of different methodologies and the lack of a complete control of the bias. They revealed that the majority of the chewing parameters, which were gathered in four groups: 1) number of cycles, 2) sequence duration, 3) muscle activity and 4) coordination and amplitudes and shape of mandibular displacements, increased in the transition from soft to hard food. CONCLUSIONS: Hard-diet in adults has an impact on the masticatory function increasing almost all the physiological masticatory parameters, muscle coordination and changes of masticatory side.

Objectives To evaluate the level of knowledge of pregnant women and puerpers about oral health and prevention during and after gestation. Methods One hundred women aged 18-49 years (mean age 33±6 years) were included in this cross-sectional study. An anonymous questionnaire with 24 items related to oral health has been administered during or just after pregnancy. Firstly, answers have been analyzed on the full population and then subdividing the sample on the base of age ranges (G1: 18-25 years, G2: 26-35 years and G3: >35 years) and number of pregnancies (FP: first pregnancy; SP: second or more pregnancies). Parametric tests have been chosen for the statistical analysis; in particular, Anova test for independent samples was used to evaluate differences of baseline demographic characteristics among subgroups G1, G2, G3 while chi-square test was used for FP and SP subgroups. Anova test was also used to intercept differences on answers given to the questionnaire among G1, G2 and G3 group; for FP and SP group was used t-test. Results Level of information and knowledge of the full sample was medium-low and no significant differences have been observed between groups regarding awareness of the own level of the oral hygiene and knowledge of oral care. Conclusions Results of this survey underline the high necessity of educational programs regarding oral care in pregnant and puerpers women. A strict collaboration between medical figures (dentist, oral hygienist, gynecologist and obstetric) is strongly encouraged to spread the concept of prevention.

Assessment in competency-based dental education continues to be a recognized area for growth and development within dental programs around the world. At the joint American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) 2019 conference, Shaping the Future of Dental Education III, the workshop on assessment was designed to continue the discussion started in 2017 at the ADEA-ADEE Shaping the Future of Dental Education II.1 The focus of the 2019 conference involved examining the potential of entrustable professional activities (EPAs) and current thinking about workplace-based assessment (WBA) within competency-based education in the 21st century. Approximately 30 years ago, George Miller wrote about the assessment of competence in medical education and challenged faculty to reach for higher levels of assessment than knowledge or skill.2 Acknowledging that no one assessment method can result in a valid assessment of competence, Miller proposed a four-level framework for assessment. The lowest level involves measuring what students know ("knows"), followed by assessment of the skill with which knowledge is applied in relevant tasks or problems ("knows how"). Next is an assessment of task performance in standardized settings ("shows how"), and finally, the highest level assesses the student's performance in the unstandardized clinical workplace ("does"). The 2019 assessment workshop focused on advances in the assessment of learners in the unstandardized workplace-the highest level of Miller's assessment pyramid ("does"). Research has shown that dental education has struggled to implement assessment strategies that meet this level.3 The workshop brought together individuals from around the world, with an interest in assessment in dental education, to consider how assessment in the "does" level, specifically EPAs and WBA, factors into competence assessment in dentistry/dental education.

Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the accuracy and the diagnostic reliability of kinesiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosis of patients presenting temporomandibular disorders. Methods: A literature survey carried out through PubMed, SCOPUS, LILIACS, and the Cochrane Library from the inceptions to the last access on August 18 2016 was performed to locate randomized clinical trials, controlled trials, prospective cohort studies, or retrospective studies (with or without a control group), that examined the diagnostic reliability of recording devices of mandibular movements in comparison to MRI. Results: From the results, it was found that a significant correlation between these electronic devices and MR images could not be detected in case of disc displacement. Discussion: The scientific evidence does not support the usefulness in clinical practice of the jaw-tracking devices to diagnose temporomandibular disorders because their diagnostic reliability is poor.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy, invasiveness and impact on clinical results of a digital oral impression protocol in the pre-surgical orthopedic treatment (PSOT) of newborn cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients undergoing primary alveolar surgical repair. Six patients were divided, according to impression technique used, into a digital (intraoral scanner (IOS)) and a non-digital (tray and putty (T&P)) group. Parents considered IOS impressions to be less invasive, compared to T&P impressions. The clinician that took all the impressions considered the IOS to be less stressful compared to the T&P method. In two T&P patients, the impression was repeated because some important anatomical details were missing, in one case due to patient regurgitation during the first attempt. No impression was repeated, and any adverse event was reported in the IOS group. There were no significant differences between these two protocols in pre-surgical alveolar gap reduction and surgical challenge. The study results indicate that this digital protocol can accelerate the production process of the passive molding plate with an instantaneous transmission of the digital impression to the dental lab, maintaining the same accuracy level and clinical outcomes of classical techniques and reducing the invasiveness of impression taking, avoiding any risk of impression material ingestion or inhalation.

PURPOSE: The relationship between thoracic-lumbar-sacral spine sagittal alignment and craniofacial morphology is still controversial. Evidence-based results are difficult to obtain and scientific studies are inhomogeneous. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference of thoracic-lumbar-sacral spine posture and cephalometric values comparing two groups of subjects with different cranial structure in the sagittal plane. METHODS: Eighty-one subjects were consecutively selected and divided into two groups, according to the orientation of the condyle-orbital plane (CoOr) with respect to the superior maxilla (SpP): Group1: 49 subjects 11.6 (2.1) years showing posterior-rotation of CoOr: SpP^CoOr ≤ -2°, -4.1°(2.1°); Group2: 32 subjects 12.9 (2.3)years showing anterior-rotation of CoOr: SpP^CoOr ≥ 2°, 3.7°(1.9°). Each patient underwent in blinding, Spinal Mouse recording and cephalometry of the skull. RESULTS: Group1 showed a significant forward tilting of the spine 4.4°(1.8°) with respect to Group2 2.4°(1.3°) (p < 0.0001) and higher values related to the vertical dimension of the skull: higher maxillary divergency (p < 0.0001), steep occlusal plane (p < 0.0007), higher gonial angle (p < 0.001). DISCUSSION: The results of this study showed a difference in the thoracic-lumbar-sacral spine inclination between groups with different craniofacial morphology. The achievement of this outcome is important to improve our multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment planning.

OBJECTIVE: To provide a systematic review of the effects of the bite-raised condition in animal models, a widespread technique in modern orthodontics. DESIGN: A systematic review of the literature was conducted. Original articles were searched through Pubmed, Cochrane Central database and Embase until December 2018. RESULTS: 242 articles were identified through database searching. After removing the duplicates, 198 articles were screened by reviewing the abstracts. 27 full text articles were assessed for eligibility and, after 7 exclusions, 20 articles were included in the review process. Studies selected by the review process concerned animal models. Histological, molecular, biochemical and electromyographical studies were evaluated. The results, with a high level of agreement in different animals, showed that the bite-raised condition is a source of stress, inducing increased plasma corticosterone, urinary cortisol and HPA axis alterations; it predisposes the organism to react to subsequent stressful stimulation with a significantly greater incretion of glucocorticoids, thus inducing hypersensitivity to novel forms of stress; it affects the structure of the hippocampus, reducing the number of neurons, increasing the number of glial cells and worsening memory and spatial orientation; it alters the electromyographical activity of masticatory muscles. CONCLUSIONS: The results of research conducted on animal models do not necessarily apply directly to human beings. More clinical research, with special attention to adolescent patients, is necessary to clarify whether, in humans, the bite-raised condition is accompanied by adverse effects comparable to those observed in animals.

PURPOSE: To explore the incidence and analyze the morphology of three-rooted maxillary first premolars (MFPs) incidentally detected on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. METHODS: Of 1328 patients who underwent CBCT scans of the maxilla, only patients with three-rooted MFPs were selected. Morphological features, including the lengths and diameters of palatal, mesiobuccal (MB) and distobuccal (DB) roots, the positions of bucco-palatal (B-P) bifurcations, the distances between root canal bifurcations and cementoenamel junctions (CEJs) and the distances between the apical thirds of the roots, were measured. The canal configuration and the visibility of root canals were also evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 16/1328 (1.2%) patients had one or two three-rooted MFPs, and a total of 22/2656 (0.8%) three-rooted MFPs were enrolled. The lengths and diameters of palatal roots were significantly greater than those of other roots. The positions of B-P bifurcations were located mainly at the middle third of the root. The median distances between root canal bifurcations and CEJs were 3 mm for B-P bifurcations and 5.2 mm for MB-DB bifurcations. The distance between MB and DB roots was significantly shorter than the distances between other root pairs. All teeth had a type VIII canal configuration. Palatal roots exhibited the best visibility of root canals, whereas the worst visibility was observed within DB roots. A gender-related relationship was observed only for the lengths of the roots. CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of three-rooted MFPs is not unusual; therefore, preoperative CBCT evaluation could be suggested whenever endodontic procedures are planned on an MFP.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the cephalometric differences and condylar asymmetry between patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and normal control group. Sixty-two JIA patients with a latero-lateral cephalogram and orthopantomography, seeking for orthodontic therapy, and 62 normal matched subjects were comprised in the study. Cephalometric analysis was used for the evaluation of facial morphology while the method of Habets et al. (J Oral Rehabil 15(5): 465-471, 1988) was used to compare the condyles in orthopantomography. The significance of between-group differences was assessed using the Mann-Whitney test, as appropriate. The results showed a prevalence of the upper maxilla with hypomandibulia (class II), hyperdivergency with short vertical ramus posterior and posterior rotation of the mandible in JIA children (SNB, ANB, NSL/ML, Fh/ML, NL/ML, ArGo, ML P < 0.0001, ML/Oc P < 0.004, ArGo/GoGn P = 0.02, no difference for SNA). The condyles of the JIA group resulted highly asymmetric (P < 0.0001). The growth pattern of JIA patients resulted clearly different from normal subjects. This serious impairment of the cranial growth may be considered as an indicator of the need for early and continuous orthognatodonthic therapy during the entire period of development for all JIA patients, independently from temporomandibular joint signs or symptoms. To this end, it is important that rheumatologists and orthognathodontists set up a multidisciplinary treatment planned to control the side effects of a deranged growing pattern, to strictly avoid any orthodontic therapies that may worsen function and growth, and to promote treatments improving the physiology and biology of the cranial development.

INTRODUCTION: Symmetric transverse expansion is the main outcome of the early treatment in subjects with unilateral functional posterior crossbite. The aim of this study was to analyse mesial rotation and mesialization of upper first molars as sagittal parameters to be corrected in the treatment of these patients during the mixed dentition. METHODS: Digital dental cast measurements (rotation and mesialization) were performed in a sample of 48 subjects with unilateral posterior crossbite (UPXB; 19 males and 29 females, mean age 10.2 ± 1.2 years) and in a control group of 35 subjects with normal Class I occlusion (17 males and 18 females, mean age 9.9 ± 1.3 years). An independent sample t-test, the Mann-Whitney test, Fisher's exact test, and Pearson correlation were used for statistical comparison. RESULTS: The amount of upper molar rotation was significantly greater in the experimental group when compared with the control group. A clinically significant 'upper molar rotation' (UMR) was present in 66.7 per cent of the subjects with UPXB versus 5.7 per cent of the control group. The UMR group presented also a significant mesialization of upper first molars when compared with the control group. In the experimental group, there was a significant difference between rotation and mesialization in the right and left side and a correlation has been found between these two variables and the amount of Class II molar relationship at the crossbite side. LIMITATIONS: This is an epidemiological case-control study and the discussed effects of an early correction of the asymmetric upper molars' migration are only speculations based on an association relationship. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study show an asymmetric upper first molars' migration (rotation and mesialization) in unilateral functional posterior crossbite versus a control group. An early evaluation and correction of the molars' migration during the mixed dentition should be considered in order to obtain a correct inter-occlusal sagittal molar relationship, space for an adequate eruption of permanent teeth, and perhaps reduce the need of a following fixed appliance treatment in the permanent dentition.
