RESUMO

PURPOSE AND AIMS: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which the use of concept maps influenced the learning processes of third year internal medicine students in the context of medical education. Reported here are the qualitative results of this study. METHODS: One-hundred thirty four medical students were taught to use concept mapping as a learning strategy at the beginning of their internal medicine rotations. Upon completion of the internal medicine rotation students were asked to evaluate how concept maps fostered the process of linking theoretical information to clinical practice. Additionally, students described how concept maps impacted their learning. RESULTS: In this study, concept maps fostered a positive connection between theory and practice. Additionally, students described three major themes impacting their learning: concept mapping as a facilitator of knowledge integration and critical thinking, as a teaching methodology and finally, as a learning method. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests concept maps may be an instructional method to foster the learning and thinking process of medical students.

RESUMO

Cardiac auscultation is an important skill for medical students to master but students' exposure to cardiac auscultation is often unmonitored. The objective of this study was to gather data at the point of care about students' cardiac auscultation experience on a required medicine rotation using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) 'murmur form'. During an eight-month period, 120 M3 students used the authors' PDA-based learning tool to record information on 940 heart sounds and murmurs. Some 93% of all heart sounds/murmurs reported by students were verified by either a faculty member (56%) or a supervising resident (43%). A PDA can be a useful tool to monitor students' experiences of cardiac auscultation and to track direct observation of such skills by faculty or residents. Medical students are eager to use technology at the point of care to practice their clinical skills.

RESUMO

The successful application of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) techniques to radionuclide evaluation of the skeleton depends on strict quality control measures, recognition of potential artifacts, and the selection of appropriate cases for specific reprocessing techniques. The application of simple image-processing routines to problems of "hot spot" and bladder pixel overflows facilitated a reduction in the technical inadequacy rate from 19% to 2% for SPECT evaluation of 100 hips, as well as improvement in diagnostic image quality in a variety of additional cases.
