The purpose of the study was to examine the association between coping strategies and perceived social support among women diagnosed with infertility and undergoing IVF treatment. A total of 383 Vietnamese women were invited to participate in this study. Participants completed a questionnaire consisting of The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Copenhagen Multi-centre Psychosocial Infertility coping scales and the Fertility Problem Inventory, and other relevant questions. The results reveal that coping strategies significantly predict some specific types of perceived social supports among women undergoing IVF treatment. Specifically, passive-avoidance coping (PAC) and active-avoidance coping (AAC) predicts a decrease in receiving support from family and friends, whereas active-confronting coping (ACC) predicts an increase in receiving support from these two sources of support. Women who demonstrate increased meaning-based coping (MBC) received all three sources of support including family, friends, and significant others support. Despite some limitations, this study is useful in understanding how coping strategies among women undergoing IVF treatment affects the social support received in the Vietnamese social context. It also emphasizes the importance of psychological support for women facing IVF treatment distress.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is circulating in many swine-producing countries, causing significant economic losses. It is observed that pigs experimentally vaccinated with a live-attenuated virus (LAV) but not a killed virus (KV) vaccine develop solid homologous protective immunity. The objective of this study was to comparatively analyze antibody profiles between pigs vaccinated with an LAV vaccine and those vaccinated with a KV vaccine to identify potential markers of vaccine-induced protection. Thirty ASFV seronegative pigs were divided into three groups: Group 1 received a single dose of an experimental LAV, Group 2 received two doses of an experimental KV vaccine, and Group 3 was kept as a non-vaccinated (NV) control. At 42 days post-vaccination, all pigs were challenged with the parental virulent ASFV strain and monitored for 21 days. All pigs vaccinated with the LAV vaccine survived the challenge. In contrast, eight pigs from the KV group and seven pigs from the NV group died within 14 days post-challenge. Serum samples collected on 41 days post-vaccination were analyzed for their reactivity against a panel of 29 viral structural proteins. The sera of pigs from the LAV group exhibited a strong antibody reactivity against various viral structural proteins, while the sera of pigs in the KV group only displayed weak antibody reactivity against the inner envelope (p32, p54, p12). There was a negative correlation between the intensity of antibody reactivity against five ASFV antigens, namely p12, p14, p15, p32, and pD205R, and the viral DNA titers in the blood of animals after the challenge infection. Thus, antibody reactivities against these five antigens warrant further evaluation as potential indicators of vaccine-induced protection.

In this study, the features of resistive random access memory (RRAM) employing a straightforward Cr/MAPbI3 /FTO three-layer structure have been examined and clarified. The device displays various resistance switching (RS) behavior at various sweep voltages between 0.5 and 5 V. The RS effect has a conversion in the direction of the SET and RESET processes during sweeping for a number of cycles at a specific voltage. The directional change of the RS processes corresponds to the dominant transition between the generation/recombination of iodide ion and vacancy in the MAPbI3 perovskite layer and the electrochemical metallization of the Cr electrode under the influence of an electric field, which results in the conductive filament (CF) formation/rupture. At each stage, these processes are controlled by specific charge conduction mechanisms, including Ohmic conduction, space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC), and variable-range hopping (VRH). By identifying the biased voltage and the quantity of voltage sweep cycles, one can take a new approach to control or modulate the pathways for effective charge transport. This new approach is made possible by an understanding of the RS characteristics and the corresponding mechanisms causing the variation of RS behavior in the structure.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that causes 21,000 deaths annually. Depsides and depsidones of lichens have previously been reported to be antimicrobials. In this study, our objective was to identify lichen-derived depsides and depsidones as dengue virus inhibitors. The 18 depsides and depsidones of Usnea baileyi, Usnea aciculifera, Parmotrema dilatatum, and Parmotrema tsavoense were tested against dengue virus serotype 2. Two depsides and one depsidone inhibited dengue virus serotype 2 without any apparent cytotoxicity. Diffractaic acid, barbatic acid, and Parmosidone C were three active compounds further characterized for their efficacies (EC50), cytotoxicities (CC50), and selectivity index (SI; CC50/EC50). Their EC50 (SI) values were 2.43 ± 0.19 (20.59), 0.91 ± 0.15 (13.33), and 17.42 ± 3.21 (8.95) µM, respectively. Diffractaic acid showed the highest selectivity index, and similar efficacies were also found in dengue serotypes 1-4, Zika, and chikungunya viruses. Cell-based studies revealed that the target was mainly in the late stage with replication and the formation of infectious particles. This report highlights that a lichen-derived diffractaic acid could become a mosquito-borne antiviral lead as its selectivity indices ranged from 8.07 to 20.59 with a proposed target at viral replication.

BACKGROUND: Women with an infertility problem living in traditional and developing countries face extensive social pressure, infertility-related stress, and distress, which possibly affect their choices of coping strategies. The present study aims to investigate the impact of infertility-related stress and social support on coping of Vietnamese women who live with an infertility diagnosis. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 192 women diagnosed with infertility at two hospitals in the north and central regions of Vietnam. Participants completed a questionnaire consisting of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Copenhagen Multi-centre Psychosocial Infertility coping scales and the Fertility Problem Inventory, and questions about their sociodemographic characteristics, infertility-related history, and key social relationships. Four linear regression analyses were performed on four coping strategies: active-avoidance coping (AAC), active-confronting coping (ACC), passive-avoidance coping (PAC), and meaning-based coping (MBC). RESULTS: The findings show that high infertility-related stress significantly predicted the use of avoidance coping strategies (AAC and PAC) among these women, while those with a high level of perceived social support tended to use ACC and MBC. None of the four linear regression models support the moderating role of social support in the relationship between infertility-related stress and coping styles. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings show that levels of infertility-related stress and perceived social support have a direct effect on the choice of coping strategies among Vietnamese women diagnosed with infertility. The study results have practical implications in the Vietnamese context, including: (i) the development and adaptation of evidence-based and culturally appropriate interventions and counselling strategies; and (ii) social policy advocacy to better support women diagnosed with infertility, their husbands, and both as couples.

RESUMO

The little-known megachiline genus Noteriades Cockerell, 1931 is recorded from Vietnam for the first time. A new species, Noteriadeshangkia Tran, Engel & Nguyen sp. nov. is described and figured based on a series of females collected from the provinces of the northern and central highlands of Vietnam. The genus is briefly discussed and a new subtribe is established, Noteriadina Engel, Tran & Nguyen subtrib. nov. of Megachilini. Lastly, an identification key and distribution map are provided for those species occurring in Southeast Asia.

RESUMO

Two species of the genus Orancistrocerus van der Vecht, 1963 from Vietnam are recorded. Of them, a new species, O. altus sp. nov. from Lang Son province in the northern part of Vietnam is described and illustrated. In addition, one subspecies, O. aterrimus nigriceps van der Vecht, 1963 is newly recorded from China.

RESUMO

The genus Chalybion Dahlbom, 1843 from northwest Vietnam is studied. Six species of the genus are recorded for the area. Of these, C. dolichothorax (Kohl, 1918) and C. gracile Hensen, 1988 are new records, whereas C. tanvinhensis sp. nov. is described as a new species. Notes on the nest of the new species and keys to both sexes of the six species reported from northwest Vietnam are provided.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To describe initial presentations and idiosyncrasies in establishing the diagnosis for human papillomavirus-related (HPV(+) ) compared to HPV-unrelated (HPV(-) ) oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC). STUDY DESIGN: A single institution retrospective series derived from an institutional prospectively compiled database supplemented by chart review. METHODS: We reviewed consecutive OPC patients referred to an academic tertiary cancer center from 2009 to 2011. HPV status was evaluated by p16 staining. Signs/symptoms and procedures to establish diagnosis were recorded independently by two abstractors blinded to the HPV status during data retrieval. Initial presentations (signs/symptoms), interval, and the procedures to establish the diagnosis were compared between HPV(+) and HPV(-) OPC. RESULTS: The most common initial presentation was an asymptomatic nodal mass for HPV(+) patients (n = 208; 69% vs. 29%, P < .001) in contrast to dysphagia/odynophagia for HPV(-) (n = 96; 34% vs. 63%, P < .001). Protracted interval (>12 months) from onset of signs/symptoms to diagnosis was observed in 18 (9%) HPV(+) versus three (3%) HPV(-) patients (P = .058). More HPV(+) patients required repeated (≥2) biopsy procedures (56% vs. 10%, P < .001). Misattribution to other disease occurred in eight (4%) HPV(+) patients (seven were mistaken as having a "branchial cleft cyst" when there were cystic lymph nodes and one as having a "lymphoma") compared to none in HPV(-) . CONCLUSIONS: About two-thirds of HPV(+) patients present with an asymptomatic neck mass and often require multiple biopsy procedures to establish the diagnosis. Idiosyncrasies in appreciating the diagnostic setting (cystic lymph node, misattribution to other entities, or submucosal location of the tumor) or patient-related factors could delay the diagnosis of HPV(+) OPC. Brucella infections in wildlife originate either from contact with infected livestock or from a natural sustainable reservoir in wildlife populations. As South Korea has set a goal of brucellosis eradication by 2013, it is necessary to determine the prevalence of Brucella in wildlife and wild rodents. This information will play an important role in the control of brucellosis. Because of the absence of prominent clinical signs, direct and indirect laboratory tests are essential for diagnosing brucellosis. In this study, tissue and blood samples were taken from wild animals, abandoned dogs, a cat and wild rodents, and they were tested for Brucella or Brucella-specific antibodies by isolation, PCR and serology. Results showed that 18.6% (33/177) of blood samples were positive by PCR, and 5.7% (11/194) were positive by C-ELISA. However, none of these samples yielded culturable bacteria. Of the tissue samples, 9.7% (8/82) were positive by PCR. Brucella was isolated from only one tissue culture from a Chinese water deer carcass. This Brucella species was identified as Brucella abortus biovar 1 by biotyping, 16S rRNA PCR and the Bruce-ladder PCR assay. In this study, we reported the prevalence of Brucella in wildlife, dogs, a cat and rodents by using serological and molecular methods, and we report the first isolation of B. abortus in wild Chinese water deer in South Korea.
