CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Acute anterior uveitis (AAU) can lead to the thickening of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) and induce refractive changes during its active phase. BACKGROUND: AAU is a common form of uveitis characterised by inflammation in the anterior chamber. A notable prevalence of optical coherence tomography - defined pRNFL thickening was observed among patients with AAU. The alterations in pRNFL thickness and their associations with other relevant ocular parameters in patients with AAU were investigated. METHODS: A retrospective, consecutive case series was conducted at a specialised uveitis referral clinic in Taiwan. This study gathered data on various demographic characteristics and various ocular parameters, namely anterior chamber cell grading, refractive error, best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and optical coherence tomography measurements. A comparative analysis of baseline and subsequent follow-up data was conducted. Additionally, this study examined the correlations between alterations in pRNFL thickness and various ocular parameters. Twenty-one patients with AAU (21 affected eyes/21 unaffected eyes) were examined. RESULTS: Initial measurements revealed pRNFL thickening in 20 patients. Treatment led to significant improvements in best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure recovery, and pRNFL thickening (p < 0.01). The correlation between changes in pRNFL thickness and best-corrected visual acuity was weak (r = 0.20, p = 0.41). By contrast, a significant negative correlation was identified between changes in pRNFL thickness and refractive error alterations (r = -0.71, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that AAU is associated with pRNFL thickening, which in turn is inversely correlated with changes in refractive error alterations throughout the disease course. Monitoring changes in pRNFL thickness can be effective in assessing ocular inflammation status.

Intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents have been increasingly applied in the treatment of retinal neovascular diseases. Concerns have arisen that these intravitreal agents may be associated with a potential risk of arterial thromboembolic (ATE) events. We conducted a retrospective, nationwide population-based cohort study to analyze the risks for ATE events in patients receiving intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) or intravitreal aflibercept (IVA). Data (2011-2018) were obtained from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Cox proportional-hazards model was used to identify the risk factors for ATEs. Of the total 3,469 patients, 1393 and 2076 patients received IVR and IVA, respectively. In our result, 38 ATEs occurred within 6 months after IVR or IVA. The risk of ATEs was lower in patients receiving IVR than in those receiving IVA (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.11-0.66). Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) exhibited a higher risk of ATEs than did those without CAD (aHR, 3.47; 95% CI, 1.41-8.53). The risk of ATEs was higher in patients with an event of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or ischemic stroke (IS) within 6 months prior to index IVI than in those without recent AMI/IS events (aHR, 23.8; 95% CI, 7.35-77.2 and IS: aHR, 290.2; 95% CI, 103.1-816.4). In conclusion, compared with IVA, IVR was associated with a lower risk of ATEs. When strategies for anti-VEGF agents are devised, risk factors, such as CAD and a history of AMI or IS within 6 months should be considered. Further large-scale studies are warranted to elucidate the safety of anti-VEGF injections.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) potentially involves multiple parts of the ocular system, including the lacrimal glands and the cornea. The present study sought to assess the risk of aqueous-deficient dry eye disease (DED) and corneal surface damage in patients with SLE. We conducted a population-based cohort study using Taiwan's National Health Insurance research database to compare the risks of DED and corneal surface damage between subjects with and without SLE. Proportional hazard regression analyses were used to calculate the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the study outcomes. The propensity score matching procedure generated 5083 matched pairs with 78,817 person-years of follow-up for analyses. The incidence of DED was 31.90 and 7.66 per 1000 person-years in patients with and without SLE, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, SLE was significantly associated with DED (aHR: 3.30, 95% CI: 2.88-3.78, p < 0.0001) and secondary Sjögren's syndrome (aHR: 9.03, 95% CI: 6.86-11.88, p < 0.0001). Subgroup analyses demonstrated that the increased risk of DED was augmented among patients with age < 65 years and female sex. In addition, patients with SLE had a higher risk of corneal surface damage (aHR: 1.81, 95% CI: 1.35-2.41, p < 0.0001) compared to control subjects, including recurrent corneal erosion (aHR: 2.98, 95% CI: 1.63-5.46, p = 0.0004) and corneal scar (aHR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.08-4.61, p = 0.0302). In this 12-year nationwide cohort study, we found that SLE was associated with increased risks of DED and corneal surface damage. Regular ophthalmology surveillance should be considered to prevent sight-threatening sequelae among patients with SLE.

For successful infection, a virus requires various host factors at different stages such as translation, targeting, replication, and spreading. One of the host genes upregulated after Nicotiana benthamiana infection with Bamboo mosaic virus (BaMV), a single-stranded positive-sense RNA potexvirus, assists in viral movement. To understand how this host protein is involved in BaMV movement, we cloned its full-length cDNA by rapid amplification of cDNA ends. The gene has 3199 nt and encodes a 969-amino acid polypeptide. The sequence of the encoded polypeptide is orthologous to that of N. tabacum elicitor-inducible leucine-rich repeat (LRR) receptor-like protein (NtEILP), a plant viral resistance gene, and is designated NbEILP. To reveal how NbEILP is involved in BaMV movement, we fused green fluorescent protein (GFP) to its C-terminus. Unfortunately, the gene's expression in N. benthamiana was beyond our detection limit possibly because of its large size (∼135 kDa). However, NbEILP at such low expression could still enhance BaMV accumulation in inoculated leaves. A short version of NbEILP was constructed to remove the LRR domain, NbEILP/ΔLRR-GFP; the expression of this deletion mutant could still enhance BaMV accumulation to 1.7-fold that of the control. Hence, the LRR domain in NbEILP is not an essential element in BaMV movement. We constructed a few deletion mutants - NbEILP/ΔLRRΔTMD (without the transmembrane domain), NbEILP/ΔLRRΔCD (without the cytoplasmic domain), and NbEILP/ΔLRRΔSP (without the signal peptide) - to examine whether these domains are involved in BaMV movement. For BaMV movement, NbEILP requires the signal peptide to target the endoplasmic reticulum and the transmembrane domain to retain on the membrane.

A polyphasic approach was used to characterize a novel bacterium, designated strain TPP412T, isolated from a paddy soil in Taiwan. Strain TPP412T was Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped, motile with a single polar flagellum and lacked bacteriochlorophyll. Growth was observed at 24-45 °C (optimal 25 °C), at pH 5.0-10.0 (optimal pH 7.0) and with 0-0.75 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain TPP412T showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to members of the genera Rhodocyclus (94.1-94.5 %), Azospira (93.9-94.5 %) and Propionivibrio (93.4-94.4 %) and established a discrete taxonomic lineage in phylogenetic analysis. The major fatty acids found in strain TPP412T were C12 : 0, C12 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c and C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c. The major polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified lipid. The polyamine pattern showed a predominance of putrescine and a minor amount of spermidine. The DNA G+C content was 58.4 mol% and the predominant quinone system was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values (≤94.5%) and distinct phylogenetic clustering clearly distinguished strain TPP412T from other representatives of the family Rhodocyclaceae. Based on the discrete phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic traits together with results of comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain TPP412T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Rhodocyclaceae, for which the name Oryzomicrobium terrae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Oryzomicrobium terrae is TPP412T (=BCRC 80905T=JCM 30814T).

Several Rhodopseudomonas palustris strains have been isolated from rice paddy fields in Taiwan by combining the Winogradsky column method and molecular marker detection. These isolates were initially screened by employing seed germination and seedling vigor assays to evaluate their potential as inoculants. To fulfill the demand in the present farming system for reducing the application of chemical fertilizers, we assessed the plant growth-promoting effects of the R. palustris YSC3, YSC4, and PS3 inoculants on Brassica rapa chinensis (Chinese cabbage) cultivated under a half quantity of fertilizer. The results obtained showed that supplementation with approximately 4.0×10(6) CFU g(-1) soil of the PS3 inoculant at half the amount of fertilizer consistently produced the same plant growth potential as 100% fertility, and also increased the nitrogen use efficiency of the applied fertilizer nutrients. Furthermore, we noted that the plant growth-promotion rate elicited by PS3 was markedly higher with old seeds than with new seeds, suggesting it has the potential to boost the development of seedlings that were germinated from carry-over seeds of poor quality. These beneficial traits suggest that the PS3 isolate may serve as a potential PGPR inoculant for integrated nutrient management in agriculture.
