RESUMO

Golden pompano (Trachinotus blochii) is a carnivorous teleost cultured in the Asia-Pacific region. Fish culture in high densities and numbers results in disease outbreaks, causing huge economic losses. Here, we collected cultured golden pompanos from 2021 to 2022 and identified the pathogens isolated from the diseased fish. Out of a total of 64 clinical cases observed in both sea cages and fish ponds, it was found that Nocardia seriolae was the predominant pathogen (26%), followed by Lactococcus garvieae (13%). Trichodina spp. was the most prevalent parasite in sea cages and earthen ponds (21%), while Neobenedenia spp. was the primary parasitic pathogen (16%) in sea cages. Given these findings, further investigations were conducted, including antibiotic susceptibility and pathogenicity tests specific to N. seriolae in golden pompanos. Antibiotic susceptibility tests of N. seriolae revealed that all strains were susceptible to doxycycline, oxytetracycline, florfenicol and erythromycin but resistant to amoxicillin and ampicillin. Additionally, a pathogenicity assessment was carried out by administering an intraperitoneal injection of 0.1 mL containing 107 CFU of N. seriolae per fish. The mortality rates observed varied between 40% and 90%, with the P2 strain exhibiting the highest level of virulence, resulting in a cumulative mortality of 90%. Therefore, disease outbreaks in fish can be minimized by developing effective treatments and prevention methods.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: As part of the National Disease Surveillance Program for Taiwanese Aquaculture, we investigated the causative agent of disease outbreaks in farmed Chicken Grunts Parapristipoma trilineatum. METHODS: In this study, outbreak cases on two separate farms were noticed in coastal Pingtung County, Taiwan. In total, 50 juvenile fish showing clinical signs (such as emaciation and erratic swimming behavior) and broodstock (two females and two males) from both farms were collected to perform gross lesion assessment, histopathological examination, and molecular identification of the pathogen. RESULT: Clinical symptoms were infected fish exhibited erratic swimming behavior, such as whirling and floating on the surface of the water. In the following months, cumulative mortality had reached 19% and 24%, respectively. The gross lesions in the infected fish included white oval cysts in the muscle, serosa of the internal organs, sclera of the eyes, and cerebral meninges. After conducting a wet mount examination of cysts using a light microscope, we observed a significant quantity of spores with morphological characteristics, suggesting their affiliation with the Myxosporea group. The spores were semiquadrate, with four tiny suture notches at the periphery; the mean spore length was 7.3 µm (SD = 0.5), and the mean spore width was 8.2 µm (SD = 0.6). The mean length and width of the pyriform polar capsules (nematocysts) were 3.6 µm (SD = 0.5) and 2.2 µm (SD = 0.5), respectively. The 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA sequences of these specimens were identical to those of Kudoa lutjanus. CONCLUSION: As this was the first time an outbreak of K. lutjanus in Chicken Grunts was confirmed, its reappearance with substantial mortality should serve as a warning to the aquaculture industry.

RESUMO

In this study, we used an in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) heating system to investigate the sublimation-induced morphological changes of cubic Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and Ag-based core-shell structures and the influence of shell coverage on the thermal stability. In contrast to previous research performed with small Ag nanoparticles (<30 nm), here we found that large-particle Ag NPs (>50 nm) underwent a three-stage sublimation-induced morphological change at 800 °C, in the sequence uniform (I)-nonuniform (II)-uniform (III) sublimation. The (110) and (100) planes were the main sublimation planes during stages I and II. When the reaction reached stage III, the sublimation rate decreased as a result of an increase in the sublimation energy barrier. For core-shell NPs, the sublimation process began with stage II. For Ag NPs presenting TiO2 shells, the sublimation process was initiated at a relatively low temperature (700-750 °C) because of a local heating effect; for Ag NPs with carbon shells, the reaction was suppressed through surface atom passivation, thereby enhancing the thermal stability.

RESUMO

Piezoelectric materials have demonstrated applicability in clean energy production and environmental wastewater remediation through their ability to initiate a number of catalytic reactions. In this study, we used a conventional sol-gel method to synthesize lead-free rhombohedral R3c bismuth sodium titanate (BNT) particles of various sizes. When used as a piezocatalyst to generate H2 through water splitting, the BNT samples provided high production rates (up to 506.70 µmol g-1 h-1). These piezocatalysts also degraded the organic pollutant methylene blue (MB, 20 mg L-1) with high efficiency (up to k = 0.039 min-1), suggesting their potential to treat polluted water. Finally, we found that the piezopotential caused band tilting in the semiconductor and aided charge transfer such that recombination was suppressed and the rate of H2 production increased. The mechanism of piezoelectric catalysis involved oxygen vacancies, the size of the catalyst, and the internal electric field playing important roles to enhance electron-hole separation, which further enhanced the catalysis reactions.

RESUMO

Increased intrasubject variability in reaction times (RT-ISV) is frequently found in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, how dimensional attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms impact RT-ISV in individuals with ASD remains elusive. We assessed 97 high-functioning youths with co-occurring ASD and ADHD (ASD+ADHD), 124 high-functioning youths with ASD only, 98 youths with ADHD only, and 249 typically developing youths, 8-18 years of age, using the Conners Continuous Performance Test (CCPT). We compared the conventional CCPT parameters (omission errors, commission errors, mean RT and RT standard error (RTSE) as well as the ex-Gaussian parameters of RT (mu, sigma, and tau) across the four groups. We also conducted regression analyses to assess the relationships between RT indices and symptoms of ADHD and ASD in the ASD group (i.e., the ASD+ADHD and ASD-only groups). The ASD+ADHD and ADHD-only groups had higher RT-ISV than the other two groups. RT-ISV, specifically RTSE and tau, was significantly associated with ADHD symptoms rather than autistic traits in the ASD group. Regression models also revealed that sex partly accounted for RT-ISV variance in the ASD group. A post hoc analysis showed girls with ASD had higher tau and RTSE values than their male counterparts. Our results suggest that RT-ISV is primarily associated with co-occurring ADHD symptoms/diagnosis in children and adolescents with ASD. These results do not support the hypothesis of response variability as a transdiagnostic phenotype for ASD and ADHD and warrant further validation at a neural level.

RESUMO

Parent and teacher ratings of child behaviors are often discrepant, and these discrepancies may be correlated with parenting stress. The present study explored whether various parenting stress factors are associated with discrepancies between parent and teacher ratings of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) as well as internalizing symptoms in preschool children. We recruited 299 Taiwanese preschool children (aged 4-6 years) from the community or via clinical referrals. A structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationships among three factors derived from the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form and informant discrepancies on symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, ODD, and internalizing behaviors. Scores reported by parents were higher for each of the symptoms examined than those reported by teachers, and the degree of agreement between informants ranged from low to moderate. The parental distress factor of parenting stress was associated only with parent ratings, whereas other factors of parenting stress-parent-child dysfunctional interaction and parents' stress resulted from their child's temperament-were correlated with both parent and teacher ratings. Only parental distress factor predicted informant discrepancies for all behavioral symptoms assessed. Our findings suggest that parental distress should be considered when parent rating scores show significant discrepancies from that of teacher rating scores.

RESUMO

Many studies have utilized a variety of methods to induce obesity in rodents, but they often received inconsistent results. The present study intended to use resistant maltodextrin (RMD) as a means to investigate the variations in its efficacy on body fat accumulation under the influence of four high-fat (HF) models of 23% or 40% total fat, comprising soybean oil, lard, and/or condensed milk. Results indicated that integrating condensed milk into the diets could help increase diet intake, boost energy intake, increase weight gain, and enhance fat formation. Supplementation of RMD (2.07 g/kg) notably reduced total body fat levels in three HF models, with the exception of a condensed-milk-added 40%-fat diet that may have misrepresented the functions of RMD. The uses of the 23% HF diets, with and without milk, and the milk-free 40% HF diet were therefore recommended as suitable models for antiobesity evaluations of RMD, or other fiber-rich products.
