RESUMO

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men. In 2000, Abbou performed the first robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, and radical prostatectomy has developed rapidly. Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a valuable therapeutic option for the management of localized Pca. Objective: To present the functional outcome of robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy using traditional and modified endopelvic fascia preservation methods in a single center in Vietnam. Methods: We prospectively analyzed a series of 65 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer from 2020 to 2023. All of those were operated by DaVinci Si system robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. Twenties patients were applied with a modified nerve-sparing technique, intrafascial dissection, and lateral prostatic fascia preservation, leaving the lateral tissue, including the neurovascular bundle, untouched and covered. We used the traditional approach, intrafascial nerve-sparing with open endopelvic fascia and lateral prostatic fascia in 45 cases. Patients were followed up to 12 months to assess the continence and erectile function by using IIEF-5 and EPIC questionnaires. Results: The study sample included 65 cases; the mean patient age was 64.21 ± 6.68, erection rate after surgery at six months in bilateral NS was 36.58% (15/41) in the traditional group, and 68.42% (13/19) in the modified group (p=0.028). The patient did not recover erectile ability in the group of elderly patients (>65 years old) and unilateral nerve-sparing group. The continence rate six months after surgery was 86.66 % in the conventional group and 85% in the modified group, with no significant difference between the two groups. In the potency group, the IIEF-5 score was 13 ± 4.9, and the EPIC-26 score was 62.20 ± 10.04. Erectile ability in the modified group was better than the traditional group at six months after surgery. Conclusion: Our results showed better potency recovery in the modified group. These results should be tested in future research with randomized studies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vietnam possesses a vast diversity of rice landraces due to its geographical situation, latitudinal range, and a variety of ecosystems. This genetic diversity constitutes a highly valuable resource at a time when the highest rice production areas in the low-lying Mekong and Red River Deltas are enduring increasing threats from climate changes, particularly in rainfall and temperature patterns. RESULTS: We analysed 672 Vietnamese rice genomes, 616 newly sequenced, that encompass the range of rice varieties grown in the diverse ecosystems found throughout Vietnam. We described four Japonica and five Indica subpopulations within Vietnam likely adapted to the region of origin. We compared the population structure and genetic diversity of these Vietnamese rice genomes to the 3000 genomes of Asian cultivated rice. The named Indica-5 (I5) subpopulation was expanded in Vietnam and contained lowland Indica accessions, which had very low shared ancestry with accessions from any other subpopulation and were previously overlooked as admixtures. We scored phenotypic measurements for nineteen traits and identified 453 unique genotype-phenotype significant associations comprising twenty-one QTLs (quantitative trait loci). The strongest associations were observed for grain size traits, while weaker associations were observed for a range of characteristics, including panicle length, heading date and leaf width. CONCLUSIONS: We showed how the rice diversity within Vietnam relates to the wider Asian rice diversity by using a number of approaches to provide a clear picture of the novel diversity present within Vietnam, mainly around the Indica-5 subpopulation. Our results highlight differences in genome composition and trait associations among traditional Vietnamese rice accessions, which are likely the product of adaption to multiple environmental conditions and regional preferences in a very diverse country. Our results highlighted traits and their associated genomic regions that are a potential source of novel loci and alleles to breed a new generation of low input sustainable and climate resilient rice.

RESUMO

N-acetyltransferase-2 (NAT2) and Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are phase-II xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes participating in detoxification of toxic arylamines, aromatic amines, hydrazines and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are produced under oxidative and electrophile stresses. The purpose of this research was to investigate whether two common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of NAT2 (rs1799929, rs1799930) and GSTP1 (rs1138272, rs1695) associated with susceptibility to idiopathic male infertility. A total 300 DNA samples (150 infertile patients and 150 healthy control) were genotyped for the polymorphisms by ARMS - PCR. We revealed a significant association between the NAT2 variant genotypes (CT + TT (rs1799929), (OR: 3.74; p < 0.001)) and (GA + AA (rs1799930), (OR: 3.75; p < 0.001)) or GSTP1 variant genotypes (GA + AA (rs1695), (OR: 5.11; p < 0,001)) and (CT + TT (rs1138272), (OR: 7.42; p < 0,001) with idiopathic infertility risk. Our findings rate the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms of GSTP1 and/or NAT2 in modulation of the risk of male infertility in subjects from Vietnam. This pilot study is the first (as far as we know) to reveal that polymorphisms of NAT2 (rs1799929, rs1799930) and GSTP1 (rs1138272, rs1695) are some novel genetic markers for susceptibility to idiopathic male infertility.

RESUMO

A novel hierarchical nanoporous thin film of AuPt alloy embedded in graphene (AuPt@GR) was successfully synthesized through the self-assembly of ultrafine AuPt nanoparticles (~3nm) within GR sheets by means of a facile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) procedure without the use of any external organic capping agent and reducing agent. A binder-free sensor based on the AuPt@GR hybrid material was fabricated and its electrocatalytic activity was evaluated by using it to determine epinephrine (EP) in PBS solution (pH=7.4) and in human serum spiked PBS solution. Amperometric measurements of the sensor response showed an extremely low limit of detection (0.9nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3), high sensitivity (1628µAmM-1cm-2), wide linear detection range (1.5×10-9-9.6×10-6M), and negligible response to interferents. At the same time, the sensor also exhibited very long-term amperometric stability (4000s), cyclic voltammetric stability (500 cycles), good reproducibility, and highly accurate detection of EP in real samples. The excellent electrochemical performance was attributed to synergistic effects of Au, Pt, and GR as well as to the formation of a unique nanoporous structure that provided enhanced electrocatalytic activity, a highly electroactive surface, and fast mass transport. These results suggest strong potential of the AuPt@GR hybrids for use in biosensors and bioelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Little information is available about how to build a monitoring system to measure the output of preventive nutrition interventions, such as counselling on infant and young child feeding. This paper describes the Alive & Thrive Vietnam (A&T) project experience in nesting a large-scale project monitoring system into the existing public health information system (e.g. using the system and resources), and in using monitoring data to strengthen service delivery in 15 provinces with A&T franchises. From January 2012 to April 2014, the 780 A&T franchises provided 1,700,000 counselling contacts (~3/4 by commune franchises). In commune franchises in April 2014, 80% of mothers who were pregnant or with children under two years old had been to the counselling service at least one time, and 87% of clients had been to the service earlier. Monitoring data are used to track the progress of the project, make decisions, provide background for a costing study and advocate for the integration of nutrition counselling indicators into the health information system nationwide. With careful attention to the needs of stakeholders at multiple levels, clear data quality assurance measures and strategic feedback mechanisms, it is feasible to monitor the scale-up of nutrition programmes through the existing routine health information system.
