RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ethics positions, consisting of the two fundamental dimensions of idealism and relativism, influence individuals' decision-making significantly. Particularly in an applied field such as nursing, the ethics positions of nurses can play a significant role in clinical decisions. Therefore, it is important to know the factors affecting the ethics positions of nurses in clinical decision-making. AIM: The aim of the study is to examine the factors affecting the ethics positions of nursing students in clinical decision-making. RESEARCH DESIGN: This is a two-phase sequential explanatory mixed methods study designed in accordance with the COREQ criteria. A participant Information Form and the Ethics Position Questionnaire were used to collect quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained through focus group interviews. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: This study was conducted after receiving written permission from X University Ethics Board. Additionally, permission was obtained from the participating nursing faculty. PARTICIPANTS: Among the fourth-year nursing students, 180 students participated in the quantitative phase and 30 students in the qualitative phase of the study. RESULTS: The quantitative data analysis showed that the idealism sub-dimension mean scores of the participants were higher than the relativism sub-dimension mean scores. The analysis of the qualitative data resulted in four main themes that influence participants' ethics positions in clinical decision-making: (1) attitudes of role models in clinical practice (staff nurses/mentors/lecturers), (2) resources related to clinical practice (labs, hospitals/classrooms), (3) health system (hospital policies/school policies), and (4) personal differences (act with emotion/act with logic). CONCLUSION: The results showed that the health system, role models in the clinic, personal differences, and skill-related resources affect the ethics positions of nursing students in clinical decision-making. In this regard, awareness can be raised by providing training to nursing students by academic instructors on ethics positions and the factors that are determined to affect ethics positions in clinical decision-making.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the training program which was based on cognitive behavioral theory on accepting and expressing emotions in terms of nurses' psychological resilience and depression levels. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study is an intervention study with a control group conducted with pretest, posttest, and two-year follow-up test design in line with Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT). The participants in the intervention group attended an eight-week accepting and expressing emotions training program, while those in the control group did not. The Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) and Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) were applied to both groups as pre-test, post-test and 6-month follow-up (T2), 12-month follow-up (T3) and 24-month follow-up (T4). RESULTS: It was determined that there was a significant change in RSA scale scores of the intervention group, and that the effect of group ∗ time interaction for all scores was significant. An increase in the total score was found for all follow-up periods with respect to T1. A significant decrease was determined in BDI scores of the intervention group, and the effect of group-time interaction for all scores was found to be significant. It was found that there was a decrease in the scores of the intervention group in all follow-up periods with respect to T1. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained from the study showed that the training program conducted with groups on accepting and expressing emotions was effective on the nurses' psychological resilience and depression scores. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Training programs that develop the skills of accepting and expression emotions can help nurses find their thoughts underlying their emotions. Thus, depression levels of nurses can decrease, and their psychological resilience can improve. This situation can help in terms of reducing workplace stress of nurses and can cause their working life to be more effective.

RESUMO

This study examined the psychological well-being (PWB) and spiritual well-being (SWB) of older adult individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who experienced the difficulties of both aging and RA. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in two centers located in the capital city of Turkey. A total of 136 individuals with a diagnosis of RA who met the inclusion criteria constituted the sample group of the study. Participant Information Form, SWB, and PWB Scales were used for data collection. The results showed that participants' PWB score was positively and significantly difference with marital status, presence of children, and regular participation in social activities. It was concluded that pain severity was not significantly difference with PWB and SWB. However, there was a significant negative correlation between PWB score and total SWB score and its two sub-dimensions, transcendence and anomie. Results emphasize the necessity of supportive interventions to increase psychological and spiritual well-being of older adult individuals with RA.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: It is pointed out that the attachment styles of spouses are also very important in terms of coping with the psychological problems experienced in illness and sexual satisfaction. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of sexual attitudes and attachment styles of spouses of cancer patients on their psychological resilience. The research was carried out as a descriptive study based on the relational screening model between January and November 2021. A total of 429 spouses of cancer patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The data were collected online using the Participant Information Form, which was prepared by the researcher, Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR-S), and Hendrick Sexual Attitude Scale (BSAS). Data analyses included descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U -test, Kruskal-Wallis, and linear regression using the SPSS 25.0 program. Two hundred forty-six women and 183 men were included in the study, and it has been detected that RSA scores of female participants were higher than male participants. In addition, a positive relation between RSA scores and ECR-S scores ( r = 0.247) and a negative relation between RSA and BSAS ( r = -0.414) were detected ( p < 0.05). It was determined that the psychological resilience of spouses of cancer patients was related to sexual attitudes and attachment styles.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This systematic review aims to examine, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), posttraumatic growth (PTG), and rumination in adolescents after an earthquake. The aim of the review is to provide high-quality, evidence-based recommendations that contribute to the roles of psychiatric nurses and the development of psychosocial support systems. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study has been conducted in line with the Centres for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) guideline which guides preparation for transparent reporting of meta-analysis and systematic reviews. FINDINGS: Despite the limited evidence, it was concluded that it is important to identify the psychological processes that lead to PTG and reduce the incidence of PTSD in earthquake-affected adolescents. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: This evidence shows how important it is to raise the awareness of healthcare providers in different disciplines, including psychiatric nurses, around the need for psychosocial support interventions following a natural disaster.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is known that intensive care nurses experience stressful events more frequently than nurses working in other units. Experiencing stressful events frequently may reduce the psychological resilience of intensive care nurses and cause them to express their tension and negative emotions as anger. However, nurses' failure to manage their anger may also lead to medical errors and adversely affect the quality of healthcare services. PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the effects of an anger management psychoeducation programme on psychological resilience and affect of intensive care nurses. METHODS: Using a self-controlled design, this study was conducted with nurses working in a tertiary intensive care unit of a private hospital in Turkey. The participants were randomly and equally distributed to the study group (n = 16) and the control group (n = 16). The participants in the study group attended an eight-week anger management psychoeducation programme, while those in the control group did not. The Psychological Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) and Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) were applied to both groups as pre-test and post-test. In addition, one month after the post-test, RSA and PANAS were administered again to determine the stability of the impact of the psychoeducation program on the participants. RESULTS: No significant change over time was observed in the scores of the control group from the overall scale (all intra-group comparison p-values > 0.05), while a significant change over time was observed in the scores of the study group from the overall scale (all intra-group comparison p-values < 0.001). Although it was observed that both groups' positive affect scores changed over time (both intra-group comparison p-values < 0.05), the paired comparison revealed that the scores of the control group were similar. On the other hand, it was observed that the study group's positive effect scores increased significantly after the psychoeducation programme but remained similar in the follow-up period. Furthermore, only the study group's negative affect scores decreased over time, this decrease continued in the follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: The study concludes that the anger management psychoeducation programme affected the psychological resilience and emotional state of intensive care nurses.

RESUMO

Background: The workload is the impinged stress due to several inter-related factors, including the competence of the intensive care unit nurse. Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the workload-related psychological changes in intensive care nurses. Methods: The study had a two-phase explanatory mixed method design. Data were collected through in-depth personal interviews and with other instruments. The obtained data were analyzed with SPSS 18.0 and MAXQDA plus10. Results: The workload of intensive care nurses was 315.8 per minute and the mean TISS 28 score was as high as 65.00. The in-depth interviews with intensive care nurses revealed that participants experienced professional stress due to high workload and went through psychological changes. Conclusion: The study findings demonstrate that psychological symptoms seen in intensive care nurses relate to a high workload. Impact Statement: The results of this study can be used by hospital administrators to create a healthy work environment with a moderated workload and optimized shift schedules so that the mental well-being of nurses can be promoted.
