RESUMO

Retaining a dissipation-free state while carrying large electrical currents is a challenge that needs to be solved to enable commercial applications of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we show that the controlled combination of two effective pinning centres (randomly distributed nanoparticles and self-assembled columnar defects) is possible and effective. By simply changing the temperature or growth rate during pulsed-laser deposition of BaZrO(3)-doped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) films, we can vary the ratio of these defects, tuning the field and angular critical-current (Ic) performance to maximize Ic. We show that the defects' microstructure is governed by the growth kinetics and that the best results are obtained with a mixture of splayed columnar defects and random nanoparticles. The very high Ic arises from a complex vortex pinning landscape where columnar defects provide large pinning energy, while splay and nanoparticles inhibit flux creep. This knowledge is used to produce thick films with remarkable Ic(H) and nearly isotropic angle dependence.

RESUMO

Performance of 16 (16 g) (n=103) and 18 gauge (18 g) (n=101) biopsy needles in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided 10-core prostate biopsies were compared in terms of cancer detection and pre-defined specimen quality criteria in this prospective randomized study. Cancer detection rates of the two groups were similar, although the mean core volume of 16 g needles was almost twice that of 18 g needles. On the other hand, using 16 g needles significantly improved specimen quality by acquiring less empty cores, small cores and fragmented cores. There were no significant differences among the complication rates and VAS pain scores of the two groups. Sixteen gauge needles can safely be used in TRUS-guided prostate biopsies, as they improve specimen quality without increasing morbidity and patient discomfort.

RESUMO

We investigated the effect of prostatic inflammation on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and per cent-free PSA levels changing after antibacterial therapy. We evaluated 48 patients whose PSA levels were between 4 and 10 ng/ml, without any suspicious findings on digital rectal examination, with no infection findings in urine analysis. Prostatic inflammation was assessed with prostatic massage. All the patients were given antibiotic therapy for 3 weeks. Patients were re-evaluated 3 weeks after antibacterial therapy with PSA (free/total) and urinalysis. Ten core biopsies were taken with transrectal ultrasound. No differences were found in terms of age, pre- and post-treatment PSA, and PSA varying between patients with and without inflammation in the prostatic massage. In 18 patients, PSA decreased below 4 ng/ml. Prostate cancer was found in 10.8% of the patients with PSA between 4 and 10 ng/ml and none of the patients with PSA values below 4 ng/ml. We suggest an antibiotic therapy for 3 weeks without regarding inflammation findings when PSA is in the gray zone, for biopsy decision.

RESUMO

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of social interaction with homosexuals on attitudes toward homosexuality in a sample of heterosexual Turkish university students. Hudson and Ricketts' 25-item scale was translated from English into Turkish and used to measure students' attitudes toward homosexuality. Findings, in general, suggested that exposure to and contact with homosexuals resulted in more positive attitudes toward homosexuality. Performed factor analysis demonstrated that there were three factors for the scale. The factors were labelled as "Social interaction with homosexuals," "Probable family ties with homosexuals," and "Tendency to be a homosexual." Subjects' negative attitudes toward homosexuality increased on the last two factors, which were about having a homosexual child or sibling, and being comfortable with being attracted to a homosexual. Results were discussed in terms of prejudice and intergroup contact.

RESUMO

The anaerobic treatability and methane generation potential of the wastewaters of the three important agro-industries in Turkey, namely, cheese-making, poultry breeding and the olive-oil mill industries were studied. Biochemical methane potential (BMP) experiments were conducted for different initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations. The results indicate that anaerobic treatment was possible for all the wastewaters studied and the biogas produced had a high methane content.
