Graphene, renowned for its exceptional electrical, optical, and mechanical properties, takes center stage in the realm of next-generation electronics. In this paper, we provide a thorough investigation into the comprehensive fabrication process of graphene field-effect transistors. Recognizing the pivotal role graphene quality plays in determining device performance, we explore many techniques and metrological methods to assess and ensure the superior quality of graphene layers. In addition, we delve into the intricate nuances of doping graphene and examine its effects on electronic properties. We uncover the transformative impact these dopants have on the charge carrier concentration, bandgap, and overall device performance. By amalgamating these critical facets of graphene field-effect transistors fabrication and analysis, this study offers a holistic understanding for researchers and engineers aiming to optimize the performance of graphene-based electronic devices.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with prolonged prothrombin time (PT), active partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and increased D-dimer levels. Therefore, we aim to investigate if anticoagulants (AC) and antiplatelet (AP) therapy play a role in mitigating COVID-19 and its associated thrombosis along with its effect on the mortality rate, the need for mechanical ventilation, and the risk of hospital admission. Electronic databases were searched from their inception to July 19, 2022. The studies were divided into two groups: Group A (any dose of AC/AP versus no AC/AP) and Group B (therapeutic dose of AC (tAC)/AP versus prophylactic dose of AC (pAC)/AP). Review Manager (RevMan) version 5.4.1 (The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark) was used for all statistical analyses. Adjusted data ratios were extracted from all included studies and pooled using the random effects model. A total of 33 studies were taken for the analysis of two groups (Group A: 285,065 COVID-19-positive patients, Group B: 2,421 COVID-19-positive patients). Overall analysis in Group A showed that the AC/AP group had a low risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients compared to the control group (risk ratio (RR): 0.77, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.69-0.86). There was no significant difference in the need for mechanical ventilation (RR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.60-1.08) and hospital admission (RR: 1.12, 95% CI: 0.78-1.59) between the AC/AP and no AC/AP group. Alongside, in Group B, tAC/AP did not demonstrate a significant decrease in mortality as compared to pAC/AP (RR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.37-1.06). Treatment with AC and AP drugs can significantly decrease the mortality rate in COVID-19-infected patients, while AC also significantly reduces the need for mechanical ventilation.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the effectiveness of acetazolamide as an add-on diuretic therapy in patients with heart failure. This meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. A systematic literature search was independently performed by two authors using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews to identify relevant studies assessing the use of acetazolamide in patients with heart failure. The search keywords included "acetazolamide" and "heart failure". The outcomes assessed in this meta-analysis included natriuresis (mmol/L), diuresis (Liters) and decongestion (absence of signs of volume overload) by 72 hours. Other outcomes assessed in this meta-analysis included hospitalization due to heart failure and all-cause mortality. A total of three studies included a total of 569 heart failure patients. The number of patients achieved decongestion was significantly higher in patients receiving acetazolamide compared to the patients randomized in the control group (RR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.06-1.67). Compared to patients in the control group, mean natriuresis was significantly higher in acetazolamide patients (MD: 74.91, 95% CI: 39.85-109.97). Diuresis was significantly higher in patients receiving acetazolamide compared to the control group (MD: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.16-0.72). No significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of all-cause mortality and hospitalization due to heart failure. In conclusion, our meta-analysis suggests that acetazolamide may have beneficial impacts on heart failure patients by increasing the number of successful decongestions. Additionally, patients who were treated with acetazolamide had significantly higher natriuresis and diuresis compared to patients in the control group.

This meta-analysis has been conducted to compare the clinical outcomes between culture-positive and culture-negative sepsis or septic patients. The present meta-analysis is reported as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Electronic databases, including PubMed and EMBASE, were searched by two authors independently from the inception to January 25, 2023, using the following key terms: "culture positive," "culture negative," "sepsis," and "septic shock." The primary outcome assessed in the present meta-analysis was all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes included the need for mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, length of ICU stay in days, and length of hospital stay in days. Total 10 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis involving 23,973 patients. No statistically significant difference was found between culture-positive and culture-negative patients in terms of all-cause mortality (risk ratio [RR]: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.95-1.24, p-value: 0.23), the need for mechanical ventilation (RR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.93-1.05, p-value: 0.79), renal replacement therapy requirements (RR: 1.11, 95% CI: 0.95-1.31, p-value: 0.19), and ICU length of stay (mean difference [MD]: 1.70 days, 95% CI: -1.10, 4.49, p-value: 0.23). However, The mean hospital length of stay in days was significantly longer in patients in a culture-positive group compared to the culture-negative group (MD: 3.04, 95% CI: 2.25-3.82, p-value<0.001). In conclusion, the present meta-analysis of 10 studies, including 23,973 patients, found no significant differences in all-cause mortality, need for mechanical ventilation, need for renal replacement therapy, and length of ICU stay between culture-positive and culture-negative sepsis or septic patients. However, a significant difference was found in hospital length of stay, with culture-positive patients having a longer stay.

Polyomaviridae family consists of small circular dsDNA viruses. Out of the 14 human polyomaviruses described so far, BKPyV and JCPyV have been studied extensively since their discovery in 1971. Reportedly, both BKPyV and JCPyV are widely distributed across the globe with the frequency of 80-90 % in different populations. The primary infection of these viruses is usually asymptomatic and latent which is activated as a consequence of immunosuppression. Activated BKPyV and JCPyV viruses lead to the development of BK Virus Associated Nephropathy and Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy, respectively. Immense progress has been made during the last few decades regarding the molecular understanding of polyomaviruses. Epidemiology of polyomaviruses has also been studied extensively. However, most of the epidemiological studies have focused on European and American populations. Therefore, limited data is available regarding the geographical distribution of these potentially oncogenic viruses in Asian countries. In this article, we have presented a compendium of latest advances in the molecular understanding of polyomaviruses and their pathobiology. We also present a comprehensive review of published literature regarding the epidemiology and prevalence of BKPyV and JCPyV in Asian regions. For this purpose, a thorough search of available online resources was performed. As a result, we retrieved 24 studies for BKPyV and 22 studies for JCPyV, that describe their prevalence in Asia. These studies unanimously report high occurrence of both BKPyV and JCPyV in Asian populations. The available data from these studies was categorized into two groups: on the basis of prevalence (low, medium and high) and disease development (healthy and diseased). Altogether, Korean population hasbeen evidenced to possess highest frequency of BKPyV (66.7 %), while JCPyV was found to be most prevalent in Taiwan (88 %). Due to high and ubiquitous distribution of these viruses, frequent studies are required to develop a better understanding regarding the epidemiology and pathobiology of these viruses in Asia.

BACKGROUND: The BK Polyomavirus (BKPyV) and JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) infections are widespread in human population and have been associated with severe kidney and brain disorders, respectively. The viruses remain latent primarily in reno-urinary tract, reactivating only in case of a compromised immune system. The seroepidemiology and molecular prevalence of BKPyV and JCPyV have been widely studied both in healthy and immunocompromised patients worldwide. However, data regarding the prevalence of these viruses in the immunocompetent or apparently healthy Pakistani population is lacking. Herein, we present the first ever report on quantitative prevalence of BKPyV and JCPyV in the peripheral blood of a randomly selected cohort of healthy Pakistani population. METHODS: A total of 266 whole blood samples were examined. The subjects were divided into three age groups: ≤ 25 years (young), 26-50 years (middle) and ≥ 51 years (elder). Absolute real time PCR assay was designed to quantify the BKPyV and JCPyV viral copy numbers in the range of 106 to 100 copies/mL. RESULTS: Overall, BKPyV was detected in 27.1% (72/266) individuals while JCPyV in 11.6% (31/266) indicating significant difference (p < 0.005) in the distribution of these two viruses. The prevalence of BKPyV significantly decreased from 51% (49/96) in young age group to 8.2% (7/85) in eldest age group. Whereas, JCPyV positivity rate slightly increased from 8.3% (8/96) in young age group to 11.8% (10/85) in elder age group. The median viral load was calculated as 6.2 log and 3.38 log copies/mL of blood for BKPyV and JCPyV, respectively. Notably, no significant difference in viral load of either of the subtypes was found between different age groups. CONCLUSION: The current study provides an important baseline data on the prevalence and viral load of circulating BKPyV and JCPyV in Pakistani population. The prevalence and viral load of BKPyV was comparatively higher than JCPyV. The prevalence of BKPyV significantly decreased with increase in age while JCPyV positivity rate slightly increased with increasing age. Viral load of both BKPyV and JCPyV was not correlated with the individual ages.

Carotid-radial pulse wave velocity (PWV) decreases in normal healthy individuals following hyperemia provoked by release of arterial cuff occlusion. To determine the effects of specific cardiovascular (CV) risk factors on the hyperemic PWV response, we measured PWV before and after brachial artery (BA) occlusion in 218 participants (66% males, age 56 +/- 19 years), with and without CV risk factors/disease. DeltaPWV ranged from -46% to +35% and values were normally distributed. On univariate analyses, DeltaPWV correlated with age, hypertension (Htn), hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus (DM), coronary disease, congestive heart failure (CHF), smoking, and mean arterial pressure (MAP). On multivariate analysis, DeltaPWV was independently related to Htn (B = 4.56, P = .03) and CHF (B = 7.34, P = .008) and trended toward a higher MAP (B = .113, P = .067), DM (B = 4.01, P = .11), and hypercholesterolemia (B = 3.36, P = .12). In conclusion, hyperemic changes in carotid-radial PWV values are independently related to Htn and CHF and possibly DM and hyperlipidemia.
